First off, sorry this is a little late this morning folks. Photobucket was denying me access all morning... BOOO! So I'm running a little behind. Anyway this is a little off topic... not what I planned on blogging about today... but I couldn't help it. I just needed to get it off my chest...

You see, yesterday was a weird day for me. A day unlike any other I've experienced since being engaged. What made it so weird was the fact that I... forgot to wear my engagement ring! DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN!

Terrifying isn't it? I was so sad when I realized that my ring was missing from my finger. In a mad dash from my apartment to the office, I just forgot to grab it off the nightstand and slip it on before running out the door. Upon realizing my mistake, I felt sad. I felt lonely. I felt... incomplete. A part of me was definitely missing and I didn't like it. I was so relieved when I got home last night and put it back and my finger. Ahhhh...

Have any of you ever freaked out about forgetting to wear your engagement ring? I couldn't believe how weird it made me feel!

Well, since we're on the topic of rings, I thought I'd share with you a little story about mine. E & I had been talking about getting married for a while, so I decided it was okay for me to start looking at rings back before Christmas. One Saturday, me and the girls from work went and took in a movie and then did a little shopping. While shopping we just 'happened' to pass by a jewelry store, so we went in. The girls I work with are both already married, and while we were in the store, they got their rings cleaned. They encouraged me to try on rings while we were there, as they knew that eventually I would be getting engaged and said I needed to get an idea of what I liked. I tried on some rings and I really liked one in particular. It was a square shape with pave around the center stones- there were 4 square stones that made up the center diamond. I didn't think anything of it but really got excited when I tried on this ring.

When E proposed I was shocked when he gave me the exact same ring I had tried on in the jewelry store. The crazy thing is- the girls from work did NOT tell him about the ring that I had liked so much. He picked it out all by himself! One thing he did that made it special was he had the four center diamonds replaced with one larger diamond. I was so impressed that he had thought to do that himself- it makes me feel like he really took the time to think about what I would like and what he thought I deserved. Lucky for us, my ring came with a matching band that fits perfectly with my engagement ring. For months I would try on the band with my engagement ring pretty much every day... (how bad am I?!?) But I just couldn't help it- I loved putting them on together and seeing what it would be like when we are married. :) Of course, being the silly girl I am- I decided that wouldn't it look SO much prettier if I had a band on each side so it would look more "even?" These silly things we do to ourselves. I suggested that E get me another band for me as his wedding gift to me. He laughed in my face when I told him of this idea... I was a sad panda.

In June, we were in Nashville for a wedding. We were bumming around the mall- picking up E's tux and such when we passed the jewelry store. There was a huge sign out front that said 30% off bridal jewelry! That was all it took, we were in the door immediately. We looked at some bands for him, and then we looked at my original band- it was on sale for nearly 40% cheaper than the original price. E whipped out his card and bought it right then and there. So that, my friends, is how I ended up having 3 rings. Here's some pics for your peruse-ment. :)

I often take workshops out with my studio. This week I was in Elgin and I taught shrinkydink rings.

I often take workshops out with my studio. This week I was in Elgin and I taught shrinkydink rings. It was so much fun. The children were amazed watching the plastic wrinkle and contort. Then when it was tiny they were delighted.

Here is one I made[gallery]

There is a great tutorial at planetjune . I find placing the pre-shrunk ring on a strip of tin foil to shrink, then using it to roll up the ring around the rod speeds up the process and makes it easy.

I took a tiny oven (which was amazing). I carried it in my trusty ikea granny trolly on the bus and set it up 'on location'. Again the kids were tickled pink. It has a glass door and so when on a table it is child eye height. The delighted in watching their master pieces shrink.

One child said ' we made an actual wearable ring' I though it was brilliant to show them they had the ability to create usable 'real' items.

This is a great activity for kids. The plastic is very cheap and you can use normal pencils and stamps. I used Karisma coloured pencils as they are so pigment rich. I wouldn't expect any pupil to work with materials I am not happy to use and it is the same for the children I teach.

Why don't you have a go...........its frivolous fun.

I feel that I have an God given ancestrial right to design jewelry. Being that I inherited this craft from my ancestors, who before me, created beauty with their hands using little or nearly nothing, and this is an invaluable gift that should be cherished. With this gift, I also feel that it's important for me to copyright my designs always. Each design that I make represents me.

When I design or think of ideas, I usually sit, and sketch them out before I attempt to make anything. Sometimes I dream of designs, and I find myself waking up in the odd hours of the night or morning, reaching for my mini-pad, and any pen or pencil that I can find. I'll even grab a marker. Nothing is safe and I will draw on anything. Once I even sketched an idea out on my 400 threah count cotton and silk sheets because I couldn't find my pad ! That's sick huh? Crazy? It took me years before I could actually admit to such an act of vandalism... Lol...

I imagine that you will come across this post and ask, " Where is your work and can I view it?" The answer is YES you can! Just go to www.stonedsoul.com or look down... you will see one of my rings!

[caption id="attachment_19" align="aligncenter" width="214" caption="Leather Ring"][/caption]

I made this all by myself. When I designed this, I was thinking about simplicity and about those who are sensitive. The leather molds to the shape of your hand! I like the look and style so please, if you come across this ring, don't even think of stealing the style and copy-righting it as your own because I will come after you! Furthermore, according to the copyright laws, an artist's work is copyrighted the minute it is made!

Yeah, I'm very serious - I will come after you! It seems that many jewelry artist out there steal other's jewelers ideas and then profit from stolen work! It's wrong and it's dishonest to steal someone's work and then call it your own!

Now that I've finished threatening the possible jewelry artist, we can move on now. I just had to add that because I truly hate when I see jewelry artists memicking others and then adding one or two beads in a different spot and calling it their own! Fact is, it's not your own, you stole it! It's not nice and don't be a "!#@*!&" now, let's get back to all that love, peaceful beading and such!

Recently I stumbled across Wendy Brandes online.

While she has several collections including It-Girls, Vivat Regina and a men's line; Eden is my favorite.

This set is perfect for summer, taking inspiration from Mother Nature thus featuring flowers, fruits, and leaves. There are smooth curves, shining stones, melded with gleaming intricacies which call to the true spirit of the living beauty around us.

FAVORITES~

My darling Eve you will shell out some serious green for these fanciful designs and I don't mean a few tender fig leaves. These necklaces retail at 1,050.00 pieces and 2,025.00 respectively, but others are upwards of 6,000.00. ( The ring prices were unlisted.)

The ring with the white Prehnite is a little different than most of the Eden pieces but I love it's rough dull look. It belongs to a woodland faerie!

So visit Wendy Brandes and check out some really unique, feminine designs!

Here's what happens these days:

You meet someone. You go on a few awkward dates. You sleep together. At one point, you decide to make this official. You begin to ignore your friends. You meet parents. You decide to move in to split the rent. You start thinking about the future. You go ring shopping.

Ring shopping?

I never thought of myself as a romantic, but perhaps I've watched too many movies. I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, a proposal should be in order. I like to think that there is a great story. You know, not the old ring in the dessert routine, or a drop down to one knee on the jumbo-tron at the Mets game. But something more surprising, more emotionally sweeping than checking out the latest batch of cushion-cuts at Zales.

When did this happen? Most women tell me they have to wear that ring forever, and their boyfriend wants it to be perfect. They want to be in love with that shiny piece of precious metal and gemstone as much as they are with their husband-to-be. And what if they didn't shop? What if he spends two or five or twenty thousand dollars on an ugly ring? They shudder. No, it's better to pick it out together. She can point under the glass and he can start calculating the debt.

It's old fashioned of me to suggest that perhaps she should trust the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with to pick out a simple ring she would like. And does it have to be the picture of diamond perfection? I myself refuse to ever look at diamond rings. It does nothing but build expectations of the most inconsequential and meaningless part of the relationship process. It is keeping up the fingers of the Joneses. It is everything a relationship should not be built on.

When the time comes for a man to make the scariest and most dangerous decision of his life, willfully committing to me forever, I'd prefer the most genuine expression of whatever snapped in his brain to cause this betrayal of male freedom. And well, a ring would be nice, too. But no pressure.

I need to take a moment to talk about our jeweler. His name is Jeff and he is an awesome and funny g

I need to take a moment to talk about our jeweler. His name is Jeff and he is an awesome and funny guy. When Jim and I were first talking about engagement rings, we did a little online research in to our options for non-blood diamonds. I knew from a geology text I'd worked on in the office that Canada was really the rising star in this field, and that the Kimberly Process for non-Canadian diamonds was getting negative scrutiny from some corners. Somehow I figured out that there was a jeweler in Quincy that was in the Canadian diamond market. One day while he was waiting at the T station for me to pick him up after work, Jim walked to one of the two jewelers in Quincy Center and asked if they had Canadian diamonds. The jeweler said no, so we concluded it must be the other jeweler, the one in the bank building. So after my birthday last year, we went in to Rogers Jewelry and asked about Canadian diamonds...

...And the rest, as they say, is history. I told Jeff what I liked, and Jim told him what the budget was, and together the three of us made my engagement ring. In August we went in and put down some money for him to work with, and Jeff got in touch with his Canadian-diamond sales reps and the process was begun. I think the side stones came in in late October (we had to trick the new sales rep; Canada doesn't cut a lot of small princess cuts, mostly just center stones, so we had to say they were for a pair of earrings in order to get him to part with them -- they were originally set as side stones in a pre-designed ring that in its other aspects did not meet our requirements). At the beginning of December, Jim got the call that the two stones contending for the center setting had come in -- one from the usual sales rep, one from the new rep from whom we got the sides. We went in so I could pick my center stone.

The usual rep apparently had committed quite a faux pas -- he sold all his better stones to other jewelers before getting in touch with our jeweler, so his offerings were sub par. He knew we were looking for a center stone with certain characteristics, and though the stone he had fit our parameters, the cut was decidedly inferior. The new rep for the new company, however, had a larger, far better cut stone. The cut quality is absolutely amazing; next to its smaller cousins, it was like looking at three little stars in a row.

A couple weeks later, Jim went in and bought my Christmas present, which we had also looked at that first day we went to the jeweler, in March. We'd spent the entire summer looking but hadn't found a nicer-set black pearl.

The ring was set by the end of year. I think Jim hid it in the Risk box because he knew I never played that game.

Now we're in the market for wedding bands, and of course we have returned to Rogers. Both our bands will be plain, so no special needs but we want our business to go to our local company. I looked at other, big-name, chain jewelers for my maid's gift, but I was completely horrified by the quality of their stuff. Yes, it's way affordable, but the metals are inferior -- 10k where you would expect 14k or 18k gold. That was unacceptable for a person with a history of sensitive, reactive skin. So I went back to Jeff and told him that I tried to give other jewelers a fair shake, but then I told him why I was disappointed in their work.

I went in to the jeweler yesterday and started the process of my maid's gift. We spent about an hour sifting through pre-designed pieces, estate pieces, and loose pieces before singling out one of the loose pieces, setting it to the side, and Jeff making a note to spend the next month looking for a slightly better piece. I'll get back to him in September and we'll go forward from there, either with what I picked out yesterday or if he finds something better when he's going through estate pieces. I'm so excited to be able to build something from the ground up! It will be absolutely unique because it is being special-made for my maid of honor on the occasion of my wedding. There will be nothing like it in the world. Chain jewelers, pah.

So if you live in the Quincy or Boston area and you are looking for a special piece of jewelry, if you haven't already got a local jeweler you're in love with, think about coming and giving the guys at Rogers Jewelry in the bank building in Quincy Center a chance. They're fantastic.

I love trying out new workout combinations and exercise equipment. I'm not talking about machines. I stay away from those the majority of the time. I mean equipment such as kettlebells, resistance bands, Valslides, stability balls, medicine balls and rings. All these things are small and easy to store. Most importantly, they make exercise fun.

For people who don't like to exercise due to boredom, you should try new things regularly. A lot of exercise equipment now come with instructional DVD's or charts to get you started.

I tried kettlebells out a year ago and haven't stopped loving them. I'm even going away for my birthday weekend to become a Russian Kettlebell Certified trainer. Who would have known?

Besides the anti-boredom factor of trying out new things, you will also keep your body from plateauing. Our bodies are extremely adaptive and an exercise program you have been following for 4-6 weeks will no longer give you the same benefit as it did when you first started it. To keep your body progressing, you need to change up your routine every month. You don't always have to change the exercises themselves. You can:

Change up your reps, sets and rests.

Create supersets by combining two exercises together and eliminating a rest period between them.

Instead of doing an exercise seated, stand up.

Throw in a cardio move at the end of a superset before resting.

Split your full body workout into two Push/Pull workouts.

The possibilities are endless. Ladies who are part of my online coaching program receive a new program every 4 weeks to keep them from plateauing. Their results have been amazing.

Keep changing, learning and growing. Stay out of the rut.

i think we knew from the beginning that we wanted antique rings. the idea of buying brand-new jewelr

i think we knew from the beginning that we wanted antique rings. the idea of buying brand-new jewelry runs pretty contrary to a lot of our belief systems. i, personally, have some problems with diamonds in particular but i love shiny things. with antique jewelry, pieces have a history, and craftsmanship you don't really see anymore. a lot of antique pieces are really unique, and tell a story about a specific place and time. we both value age and reuse, so antique jewelery was an easy decision. but styles? cuts? sizes? stores? we were completely clueless. unfortunately, i think we both missed the class on How To Know What Kind of Wedding Ring You Want. a lot of ladies my age can tell you the karat, cut, and kilobytes of their future wedding ring. me? i mostly hoped i wouldn't lose it.

we had the good fortune to find the perfect jewelers to help us out. it was a snowy day in march, and we were driving down the street in bloomfield (an italian neighborhood of pittsburgh). i think we had just had coffee and some vegan cupcakes, and were feeling pretty good about life and then! i spotted an antique jewelry store, and we had to stop. we swapped some pleasantries with the couple that owns the store, and learned that they have a daughter who married a woman a few years ago in Massachusetts! they were so sweet to us, and showed us pics of their toddler grandson, and gave us advice like, "It's FOREVER, girls!" i fell in love with a sparkly ring, but i felt like we should shop around more, and so we thanked them and left.

within 10 blocks, i turned around, and we went back and bought the ring. i couldn't stop thinking about it. sometimes you just know. my ring is really small and thin, with a very very low setting and six tiny diamonds forming the band. the jeweler said it is probably a 1930s or 1940s ring, and held it in his fingers and said it is Such A Nice Piece. if you're into delicate deco rings, it is quite a nice example. it's 18K white gold. i am generally not into jewelry, but it makes me so happy every time i see it.

krista's ring was a little harder. we went to what felt like a million jewelry shops, others in Pittsburgh, as well as some in Olympia and Tacoma. We couldn't find anything, and we were tired of looking. finally, we went back to the Swetts in Pittsburgh a few months later, and described what krista thought she wanted, and lo and behold, they had the perfect ring! we went through boxes and boxes of their antique jewelry, and then krista found the one -- probably a 1920s or 1930s deco ring with a solitary diamond in a very low, square setting. it's also 18K white gold, so it matches mine, and the diamond is flanked by two tiny, subtle sapphires, her birthstone. they sized both of our rings, and polished them like brand-new.

krista found the most perfect ring boxes to hold our rings until the wedding. superstition says you are not supposed to wear your ring before the wedding, or you will never get married. i confess, i wore my ring a lot in secret, and i still ended up married, so let this be a lesson to you, hexers and jinxsters! levi held the rings for us during the ceremony, although he insisted he did not want to be the ring bearer (too much pressure!)

our minister read, A circle is the symbol of the sun and the earth and the universe. It represents wholeness and peace. In the form of a ring it is the accepted token of marriage. By the use of this ring you express in visible form the unbroken circle of your love, in which wherever you go you will always return to your shared life together. she slipped my ring on like a pro, but i was so nervous i almost put krista's ring on the wrong hand! fortunately, she saved me from certain embarrassment and doom.
