It was Saturday and as usual Akhil and I had to find a restaurant for lunch. It was drizzling outside and we had our good friend Footie waiting to join us for lunch. Shikhar was the place we zeroed in on which is located near the TDP's office opposite KBR Park Shikhar in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. Shikar, a 60 seater, serves Indian and Mexican food.

By the time we reached the restaurant wading through the traffic the slight drizzle soaked us up a bit and that added to our hunger. Parking our vehicles outside the three of us rushed in for the lunch. Without wasting anytime ordered the food starting with the soup.

Soup: Mexican Chicken Soup

There was no second opinion on this. The last time we went to Shikhar we loved the hot and spicy chicken soup. The soup was quite hot and spicy with capsicum, shredded chicken and a good sprinkling of pepper. Do try the mexican soups. Both the veg and non-veg soups are good.

Starter: Chicken Afghani

A dry chicken kebab, tasted good and was well prepared. We did not try any mexican starters.

Main Course: Tandoori Rotis and Ghost Jehanghiri

Rotis were served hot. The curry, Ghost Jehanghiri was made of tender lamb pieces marinated in four different spices, grilled and then tossed into a gravy made of tomatoes and cashewnuts. The curry was not spicy but tasty.

Biryani gone wrong: To finish the lunch we ordered some boneless lamb biryani. What they served was rice mixed with lamb pieices. The biryani did not even look or smell or taste like the regular biryani.

Pricing: The prices are a bit on the higher side but affordable given the locality where it is situated. A meal for two (Soup, Starter, Rice, Rotis, Curry and a Dessert) should cost around Rs.750.

Ambience and Service: A small place neatly done with good service.

Verdict: Worth visiting once.

In September of 2007, I had a chance to visit The Biltmore in Asheville, NC with my husband and parents when they were visiting from Texas. If you don't know anything about the Biltmore, well it's basically a house on steroids, but built in 1895. A time when people didn't have all the modern conveniences that we have today, like indoor plumbing and indoor pools and an entire staff for to cater to you and your guests every whim. It is the largest home that is privately owned in the United States and the descendants of the Vanderbilts still own the home. It is amazingly large at 175,000 square feet. The available tours of the home are simply incredible and it is unbelievable to tour the home and realize that more than 130 years ago architecture, design, and the like were so advanced.

I really enjoyed the architecture and detail work of the place. I suppose if you just want to look at the outside, you really don't need to pay the $40-50 admission price. You can just drive up the long drive, park and walk up to the house and look around. For more information on touring and tickets, here is the website.

He told the Sunday Herald that War Heroes, a comic described as Full Metal Jacket meets X-Men, could soon be turned into a film.

Talking about the storyline, he said: "It's set a couple of years in the future. John McCain has just won the election and the war in the Gulf is getting bigger, so they give the troops superpower pills. That gets all the young American kids signing up to fight the Iraqis."

Millar also noted that films based on comic books are in vogue because they offer Hollywood "high concept" ideas.

He said: "What producers do now is snap up material before others can get their hands on it. They'll buy a project based on just a title, a blurb and an image. And if they smell what the business calls 'high concept', they will go into a feeding frenzy.

2008, United States
Director: Jon Favreau
Screenplay: Mark Fergus, Matt Holloway,
Art Marcum, Hawk Ostby
Notes: Red and gold suit originally by artist Steve Ditko

If I had to name the superheroes least likely to have the greatest comic book movie ever, Iron Man would probably be high on the list. I'm not much of a comic book guy, but I'm familiar enough to know that Stan Lee's creation is a second, maybe third-tier superhero: a guy everyone knew was part of the Avengers, and had some fairly generic powers granted by a red and gold suit. Now I'm also not much of a fashion guy, but honestly, who puts red and gold together? Has this ever been done anywhere else in the history of mankind? Would a hot dog with mustard count?

Remarkably, the movie Iron Man reveals Tony Stark to be the most interesting of superheroes - in origin, in character, and in design. Let me work backwards from that list. The suit in this movie looks fantastic. It is a joy to watch, and has more personality than the garb of a Batman or a Spiderman. Granted, that novelty is partly because we've already had our share of Batman and Spiderman movies, but Iron Man's skull-like helm has a sort of primal artistry that his more famous peers lack.

Thanks largely to Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man is also probably the best developed character in the superhero movie genre. Here is a superhero that does not merely have a past or relationships, but a personality as well. Sure, he wisecracks with the best of them, but he does it with a deadpan and a smirk that suggests this is a real person, with a history and a way of dealing with the world. He does not simply go through the motions of an origin, but emotionally inhabits the decisions - Downey Jr.'s expressiveness as an actor and the quality of the writing go a long way towards achieving that.

Iron Man's origins are the raison d'être of this film, which is unusual in that the titular character is evolving up until very late in the movie. This is the story of a transformation, and that's partly why I like it so much better than, for example, Batman Begins, which takes an origin and tacks on a movie at the end. There are villains in this film, and they are admittedly somewhat weak. But - without revealing too much - it would be easy to overlook how well they are presented, particularly though another top notch acting performance.

After all this, I have not really said much about the movie. Iron Man starts with a thrilling escape and builds effortlessly off of that. There are unusually well-realized relationships between Tony Stark and his secretary, Pepper Potts, as well as his business partner Obadiah Stane; the humor and drama that ensues largely works due to the development of these characters. For a superhero movie Iron Man is comparatively light on action, but what is there works well, and who says superhero movies are just an excuse to blow stuff up, anyway? Michael Bay, maybe.

Style: 9
The suit is detailed and fun to watch. Tony Stark's mansion and workshop are some of the coolest locations I have ever seen in any movie. Downey Jr.'s performance as an eccentric but evolving billionaire gives the film a life and style all its own. The design of the villain is somewhat disappointing, which is probably my only real complaint with the entire movie.

Substance: 8
The characters are surprisingly deep and believable, more so than any other comic book movie. The story focuses on the character development of Tony Stark, paralleling the creation of the Iron Man suit, in the most extended and enjoyable superhero origin committed to film.

Overall: 9
I was blown away by Iron Man, and it's the first movie I've been eager to see a second time in the theater since The Fellowship of the Ring back in 2001. Iron Man is nothing short of the most entertaining comic book movie I've seen, to date.

Brian Eno is considered the father of modern ambient music. Rising to precedence as the keyboardis

Brian Eno is considered the father of modern ambient music. Rising to precedence as the keyboardist/synthesizer of British art-rockers Roxy Music, Eno would go on to pioneer experimental music in his solo work, as well as to produce and compose in a plethora of contemporary styles. His latest work was producing Coldplay's Viva La Vida.

In the liner notes of Ambient 1/Music For Aiports, Eno states, "Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." Ambient 1, the first of Eno's four journeys into experimental ambient music, is just what it says it is. Simple, soothing, atmospheric, it is the perfect album for walking bedazzled through an airport or collapsed on a bench, watching the time click by. Defined by synthesizers and keyboards, it develops slowly, successful when almost unobserved.

The first two tracks (or one piece, however you choose to look at it) consist of synthesizers beneath sparse piano. The second half relies solely on synthesizers, incorporating brass tones and strings. "2/2" is possibly the most beautiful track on the record. All four display his minimalistic influence, drawing from such artists as Glass, Cage, and Reich. This album serves as a glorious soundtrack to an airport, or wherever else it is played. The atmosphere would mesh just as simply with a park, a market, a coffeehouse, a subway, or even a busy city street. As Eno's first determined atmospheric work Ambient 1/Music For Airports is notable both historically and for its beauty. It is a landmark album that deserves its acclaim.

5/5

From the first season until I went off to college, I watched the show religiously, no matter what time it was screened or what day of the week it was shown on. I saw the first movie on opening day; I have a couple of X-Files tee shirts somewhere in my closet, and even have the soundtrack album of music inspired by the show. I’m a fan, and as a fan I want the movie to be as successful as possible because I think the show ended too early thanks to David Duchovny thinking he could be a movie star.

The film opens with Mulder (Duchovny) standing outside Joliet State Correctional Institute with a suitcase in hand. Pulling up in an old police car bought at auction is Scully (Gillian Anderson). After a quick trip to James Brown’s church in Chicago and a long talk with Cab Calloway, the two decide to get the band back together and save the orphanage in which they grew up.

Oh wait, that’s the plot of The Blues Brothers. Sorry.

He quickly finds himself in a life-or-death struggle in a twisted game from which there is no escape.

"13 Tzameti" is what is called film noir. Do not expect to find anything cheery or necessarily uplifting in this movie. Noir just isn't cheery.

22 year-old Sébastien (GEORGE BABLUANI) is making repairs to a house belonging to a morphine addict named Jean-François (PHILIPPE PASSON). While working on the house, Sébastien overhears a conversation between Jean-François and another man. He learns there is an opportunity to make a lot of money. Jean is waiting for the delivery of an envelope with some instructions in it. Jean expresses a great deal of nervousness about this and he believes he may not return from where he needs to go and what he has to do. Other mysterious men are watching the house and also waiting for the same envelope. The envelope arrives and in it is a train ticket and paid hotel reservation.
Jean-François puts it away, takes a long hot bath and ODs on morphine. Sébastien finds and takes the envelope and
goes on the trip in Jean-François' place.

This is unwise. Sébastien is young, poor, naive and somewhat innocent about the world. All he wants to do is make sure his family has money. He boards the train and begins a journey from which there is no escape. For Sébastien, the only way he is going to get out is to finish the journey even if it means compromising his own morals just to survive. He will not come out unscathed. His innocence will be gone.

George Babluani does a great job as Sébastien. There isn't a ton of dialogue and the most intense scenes are the ones in which a word isn’t spoken. Facial expression and body language are used to communicate terror, hopelessness and will to survive.

The film's sharp, black and white cinematography is good as is the score. Director Géla Bubliani explores the darkness of human nature effectively.

This film is about greed, blood-lust and making a quick buck. There is no gore on-screen which made me think of Alfred Hitchcock and his style. I also kept thinking of "The Deer Hunter" (if you see this film, you'll know why). There are few redeeming characters in the film. The only possible ones may be the police. In this movie, money equals freedom and happiness and it's the purpose of the game.

I liked this film, first, because I like film noir for the most part. Secondly, the acting was great and the story was well told.

If you like French film and/or film noir and it's exploration of the dark side of human nature, you'll like this film. If not, go see "Wall-E".

Themes: greed, gambling, murder, life, death, drug addiction, survival, escape, revenge

i though the movies will end when the joker had captured by the police, tapi ternyata masih panjang lagi, dan gua udah mulai ngantuk, tokoh ceweknya mati dan yang satunya lagi jadi jahat dan gua pun tertidur, begitu bangun batmannya udah kabur dikejar-kejar polisi dan filmnya selesai. udah gitu aja? iyah.

tapi gua gak terlalu ngerasa rugi nonton film ini, selain gratis, I never hope too much on a batman movies. dan tokoh utama cewe film ini (rachel) mirip banget sama temen seangkatan gua, cukup lumayan menyejukkan mata :-P, begitu si rachel ini tertidur untuk selama-lamanyanya, gua lebih memutuskan untuk tidur sementara.

Instead of a feel-good book about a hapless heathen who sees the light and changes his ways, Ryan Fisher is a satirical, humorous commentary about churches.

The tale starts when Ryan receives a revelation from watching televangelists on late night television—in order to sell more real estate, he must sell to Christians. Taking out an ad in the Christian business directory, Ryan pretends to be a Christian because he learns that Christians want to buy from, live around, and socialize with other Christians. Before long, he does good deeds and fakes being a pastor, which leads to his decision to plant his own church in Bartlesville, OK.

Using a business model, Ryan’s church, The People’s Church, attracts attention making him and his wife, Katherine, wealthy, successful, and respected members of the community. However, Ryan doesn’t actually believe in God or know anything about the Bible, so he has to constantly maneuver his way out of uncomfortable situations using wit and charm. Ryan Fischer is a charismatic leader who would stop at nothing to gain power—for the greater good, of course (and to make a few bucks here and there). What’s interesting about Ryan is that he learns that doing kind things for others makes him not only feel good inside, but also makes him popular.

The book functions as a satire on the way many Christians do church. Having little exposure to Christianity and church, Ryan fakes his way through his pastorate. His mistakes seem like a postmodern leader admitting that he doesn’t have all the answers. When in reality, Ryan doesn’t even understand the questions. Plus, his observations about church—the greeters, children's church, worship music, lighting, stage, sound, and advertising are hilarious. Because Ryan examines Christianity from outside the box, he is almost like an alien studying the oddities of human behavior.

Despite deceiving his congregation about being a pastor, Ryan turns out to be a pretty good preacher—inspiring others to follow God. By watching others experience Grace, Ryan and Katherine wonder if they’re missing out on the bigger picture. Ryan easily shrugs off his feelings, acting as if he is a god, while Katherine seems to be seeking a faith of her own. A dynamic character that gets a little too friendly with the church worship leader, Cowboy Jack, Katherine is Ryan’s moral compass and the voice of reason in an otherwise insane and confusing situation.

The Almost True Story of Ryan Fisher is not only a great read on the surface, but a book that will enable Christians to think deeply about church in America. The questions that Stennett raises through Ryan, Katherine, and the other characters are timeless: What does it mean to be the church? How can a loving God allow such horrible things to happen? Why does worship music all sound strangely similar? Instead of offering pat answers, Stennett allows the questions to linger within the recesses of our minds long after the last page of the book is read. However, instead of writing a boring dialogue on theology, Stennett offers an amusing tale, too.

French duo The Youngsters are signed to Laurent Garnier’s F-COM label. Their style is melody laden electro/tech/techno… think Underworld meets Daft Punk and you might be close! These guys are not to be missed. Thanks to Oli & Kim for this mix.

Interested in hip-hop, but can't stand the crap that's advertised on MTV and Boost Mobile commercials? A lot of people don't realize that there is still good hip hop music out there. You just have to look for it. For this reason, I've decided to let you know about two artists I've found that still treat the genre as an art form.

The first artist I think you should know about is Busdriver. I found him accidentally while searching for another group. It's hard to explain his styles, so I'll just tell you to look at some of his music videos on YouTube. If you like rhymes that are as fast as they are intellectual, you'll enjoy Busdriver's music.

The next group is called Blue Scholars. I've only heard one song by them, so I can't speak for their full catalog. The one song I did hear, Blink, really caught my attention. I think they are worth a second look.

So there they are. Check them out and you'll see that not all is lost. The world of hip hop isn't completely overrun with songs about gangstas and bitches.

Grills, especially gas grills, are an equipment to be used with caution and care, as they may just put you in danger. Most of the times, fires are started by gas tanks of such grills.
No further than November 17, a fire devastated the back porch of a house. It was started from a debris fire that was not completely extinguished and came dangerously close to three propane tanks for a gas grill that Robert Delphia was keeping on the porch. The pressure relief valve on one of the tanks activated, resulting in a loud noise that was initially described as an explosion, but the tanks did not explode. Fortunately, the incident ended quickly without victims or injuries, as the fire was noticed and reported in an incipient stage by the Police Officer on patrol.
This was a case of external ignition factor, but there are many reported cases when fire is started as a result of manufacturing flaws. Thus, although confined within manufacturing standard limitations, there are still reported cases of home accidents occurring because of manufacturing problems.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission receives reports of such accidents or malfunction cases that might endanger the user, analyzes the situation and may decide to recall dangerous products. These are some examples of recalled grills and their producers:

Jenn-Air Downdraft Gas Cooktops produced by Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa.

November 18: 1,170 units were recalled.
Cause: switches are located too close to the gas tubing that leads to the grill burner. The produced electrical arch represents a fire hazard.
Reports: 4 reports - fire catching during use as a result of a gas leak, no injuries.

Five-burner Vermont Castings barbeque grills produced by CFM Corporation, Canada.

November 10: 12,500 units were recalled.
Cause: gas leak and fire hazard.
Reports: 38 reports - gas leaks, but no injuries or property damage.

Beefmaster Explorer Outdoor Gas Grill produced by Nexgrill Industries, Inc., of Walnut, Los Angeles County.

October 21: 10,000 units were recalled.
Cause: when adjusting the gas pressure regulator the label on the valve can become positioned so consumers cannot see what it indicates, thus it could be left on by mistake.
Reports: 2 reports – gas leaks but no injuries or property damage.

And these are only few of the dangerous products reported lately. A little too many, aren't they? So, how come that so many inappropriately manufactured products get to reach the stores and finally the consumers?

About The Author

Laura Ciocan writes for http://www.natural-gas-grills.info where you can find articles, buying tips and reviews of popular gas grills
Please feel free to use this article in your Newsletter or on your website.
"Listen close to everybody's heart
And hear that breaking sound
Hopes and dreams are shattering apart
And crashing to the ground."
On the Rise from Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog

Been a while since I wrote, huh?
So, LIFE STUFF
Work, sleep, blah blah. Got bit by a stinkin' cocker spaniel at work on Thursday. NOT HAPPY. This is a dog that comes like EVERY WEEK, and trust me, she wasn't scared of me. She's a spoiled little brat, and her attitude was "I don't want to and you can't make me." I really hate it when we get dogs like that.
Anyway, all I was doing was getting her out of the bottom cage at work to brush out her hair, and she started snapping. So my boss threw me a leash, and when I went to put it around her, the dog freaks and starts attacking my hands. Well, that didn't go over well with me. So I grabbed by the scruff and shoved her to the ground [scruff-grabbing is the most common disciplinary technique used by dogs, especially mothers correcting their puppies], ripping my hands out of her mouth at the same time, and when she wouldn't stop attacking, I lifted her by the scruff, shook her, and yelled, "KNOCK IT OFF! I AM NOT PLAYING RIGHT NOW!!!"
Well she got the message after that, and her legs were shaking when I put her on the table.
So damage report! Most of my fingers had little nicks from where her teeth had grazed me, and one finger was numb for a few hours, and the nail was loosened. One of my other fingers has a nice little hole about, oh, the size of a canine fang where it tore the skin clean off before I could get my hand away.
So before you go, "oh poor dog," let me remind you that all I did was shake her and yell. Her mother [the dog] would have done a hell of a lot more.
I love dogs. I really do. But you have to discipline them, just like with kids. When you don't, then you get brats, and sometimes violent brats, like this cocker spaniel. And when a dog bites you, TRUST ME, shaking it is the LEAST you should do.
Which is all I COULD do since it was a customer's dog. If this had happened, say, on the street when I wasn't at work, I would have slammed her to the ground instead of shoving, and would have smacked her on the nose.
Trust me, all you yuppie liberal PETA hippies, you cannot let a dog get away with biting you. The woman who owns this dog has grandkids, and if a dog will attack an adult, it will sure as hell go after a little kid.
Anyway, my boss got the muzzle for me, and told the dog to stop being bad. Which seems kind of minor, but while my boss is super sweet, she can seem really threatening when she wants to. When her husband got back, he wanted to see the damage and asked if we had corrected the dog [business term for "discipline"], and my boss said I did it very well.
So, glad to know I did the right thing. Good thing there wasn't any customers there, though. Most people don't understand that you have to "correct" a dog that bites you very strongly.
On the other hand, that same day we had ANOTHER cocker spaniel who was the polar opposite of the one who bit me. She was all black, with little tan "eyebrows" and feet, and she also comes every week. The black spaniel is very sweet and often nuzzles me. They're both about the same age, around 18 months.
So yeah. That was my adventure at the pet salon. The finger she put a hole in hurts every time I flex it. She got me right on the knuckle.
In other news, this week was my second week since I started "ninja classes." It's incredibly fun, and even though the hours are technically from 7 - 9, so far the soonest I've left was after ten. So I'm getting a lot for my money, as well as learning really cool things.

Hope everyone caught the AWESOME that is Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. I really loved it, and will probably buy it when it comes out on DVD. It was funny, well written, and though its a comedy, I think Dr. Horrible had a lot of good points on humanity. I think the ending was kind of heart-breaking.

Also saw The Dark Knight last Monday. Didn't think it would live up to the hype, and guess what?
IT DID.
Holy CRAP. It was ten times better than Batman Begins, which was also awesome, and Joker totally stole the show. SRSLY. No one will EVER do a better Joker. I don't see HOW.
It was gruesome, it was incredibly dark and very depressing, so go see something happy afterward. The story was well written, very complex, and had a pretty good twist, I think. There's this one scene where I went, "Wow, didn't think they'd do THAT. That's BOLD."
I'll give you a hint about what I'm talking about: THINK AERITH. Keep that in mind when you see it, and you'll know what I mean.
Also: THE PENCIL. Keep an eye out for PENCILS.
That was something Raymond told me before I saw it. He said, "Okay, just remember: PENCIL. After you see the movie, we'll talk about the pencil."
And HOLY CRAP THE PENCIL!!!
Anyways. Everything about that movie was incredible.
Also, Christian Bale is hot.
Uh. What else.
Ah yes, WAY BEHIND in my book. I need to finish the writing parts by Tuesday, because Tues-Thurs I have no time to write, and I want to get it done before August. That way, during August, I can focus on editing. Anyway, I have six chapters to do, so that means I need to do at least two chapters a day starting today, which shouldn't be so bad, since I'm at the last inner story arc right before the end, which I've been wanting to do for a while now. And I can't wait to do the ending. It'll be BOSS.
lolz no i can't say boss it doesn't fit me xD
It'll be FRAGALICIOUS
yeah that sounds more like me.
Anyway, gotta go. Gotta do some shopping and stuff, then come home and write.
Go look up Dr. Horrible!!!!!!!
And see The Dark Knight!!!
No status report today.

Well, obviously, it is a bit difficult to assess what is only a thirty nine minute-long re-assemblag

Well, obviously, it is a bit difficult to assess what is only a thirty nine minute-long re-assemblage of Renoir's original film, but still, this is pretty great. Oddly enough, it is almost a complete 180 from the previous year's Toni, which I still consider my favorite Renoir. However, the different approach is similarly successful. This isn't a deep character study with lots of psychology and development, but instead a quicker, but equally profound, "poetic" sensibility to the narrative. This is clearly the right route considering the film is so short to begin with, but the choice is given even more support by the poignant feeling underscoring every sequence.

A Parisian ironmonger takes his family on a trip to the country side and it is there that his daughter, Henriette, becomes the object of affection for Rodolphe. He convinces his buddy, Henri, to help mingle with Henriette and her mother, Juliette. Henri remains passive and reserved, while Rodolphe brings out as many charming bits of dialogue as possible. Despite his intentions, his witty manner impresses Juliette rather than Henriette. When the group decides to go boating, Henriette decides to tag along with Henri and the result is a tragedy of two would-be lovers never quite aware of their feelings, let alone how to express them.

There are a few films that Renoir's short bears a heavy resemblance to. One of the most obvious being Picnic at Hanging Rock if only for the whole "day in the country" (hence the film's title!) set-up, but thankfully Renoir never indulges in a goofy mystery story, but instead goes the route of a lost love type narrative, which I certainly prefer. This is where the film begins to show shades of Hiroshi Shimizu's great Kanzashi, which is obviously not a problem at all. It's good to finally be able to see the connection between Renoir and Shimizu outside of the fact they were both formally experimental. Not only is the story the same, but the way in which Renoir achieves cinematic poetry within such a limited aesthetic is astonishing in the same way the poetic moments in Shimizu's film are. Really, the only problem with this film is that it is short, which makes it slightly less powerful, but with that said, I actually wouldn't want it to be any longer.

A very orange or amber colored beer on the pour into a pilsner glass. It had a small head. I really didn't get bowled over with the nose on this one after pouring. It smells of sweet malts. It tasted of sweet malts. It is smooth and creamy and you don't pick up the alcohol levels at all. It had notes of bread, caramel, metal and hops. All in all not a bad as it is very smooth - but nearly flat.

About a month ago we ordered some new lube. We only use Silicone based lubes. We were checking the prices on a few of the many sites we order from, and in the clearance section of one of those sites, they had "Ride" lube. It was half the cost of any others so we bought it. I have to say that I really like it. It's very slick. It feels like velvet on the skin. Its great in the shower and easy to wash off with soap and water. Sir says that its only problem is that it's too thin. When he is applying more it tends to drip through his hands.

I dont like the bottle. It gets very slippery. It has a pop top lid that makes it difficult to open and close. If you arent careful and close it, it will pour out if left on its side. I actually have ended up pouring it into a pump bottle. No more leaks.

The product itself is very good. I would buy it again. I give it 8 hearts out of 10. It lost a heart for the bottle and another for the thinness.

(remember- dont use silicone lubes with silicone toys)

Newbury award-winning book, The Giver by Lois Lowry, crosses science fiction and fantasy. This take of the Utopian/Dystopia geared towards young adult follows Jonas, a young boy living in a community where he is selected to be the town's new Reciever of Memory on his twelfth birthday. This community exists in the future where there is no longer hunger, emotional pain, war, violence, or prejudice, but as a price for such a utopia there also isn't any music, colors (the population has been genetically modified so they can no longer see colors), literature, art, or intense emotional feelings like love. Families are brought together for the practical purposes of raising the children and passing along societal values so they can function in the community, then disbanded once the children grow old. Childen are raised pretty much on community childcare centers until they reach the age of one at which time they are placed with a family.

After Jonas is selected, he begins to receive the memories of the past and learns about what human existence was like before his community. This leads him to make a decision about how he ought to proceed into the future. Was the past with all its terrible wars and violence better than this static future? Or is it better to have a full belly than beautiful music and colors?

The book raises that insistent question: Can you have art and beauty without violence, death, and pain? A lot of scholarship has been written on this question, with many scholars siding with the idea that violence is in fact productive of art. After all, at the center of any good story must be some sort of conflict. The book implies that the beautiful and good things the most that make life worth living also cause some of the worst sides of human behavior. The two are intimately linked. The book leaves open the question of which existence is better. Not much changed on my re-read. A solid, fairly straightforward novel with Utopian/Dystopia trappings.

Debuted alongside the launch of the Royal Court's 2007 international writer's season, The Ugly One, by Marius von Mayenburg (and not directed by Benedict Andrews - would you believe?) received a two week remount in June this year in the Jerwood Downstairs Theatre, London. A world away from his later, darker and more dramatically experimental works, The Ugly One is a fifty-five minute farce and in the hands of Ramin Gray, it represents von Mayenburg at his most straightforward and simplistic. Unfortunately, it's also his least exciting work, adding little to very well-trodden thematic terrain.

von Mayenburg seems to have confused economy with substance, because even with a script of less than an hour, he is relying on a wafer-thin premise: what if revolutionary surgery was developed suddenly giving us the ability to all become incredibly attractive? It's a concept milked for every last gag when Lette (Michael Gould), who upon being told he is not marketable by his employer and confronted by his wife realises that he is terrifically ugly, decides to undergo the operation. The results are initially positive for Lette, receiving a promotion and being adored by his wife like never before, but as others decide to have the operation too, his world descends into a chaotic whirlwind of game playing, identity confusion and narcissism.

What von Mayenburg is attempting to say about the superficiality of physical beauty is probably best realised in Gray's direction: clean, stripped back with no set, props or costumes, and with no actual physical transformations taking place in any of operations. In an especially nice touch, the stage manager is also seated in a small on stage box in clear view of the audience. While Gray gets some energetic and, at-times, funny performances from his cast, the play feels incredibly static in the space, imbuing all of its weight onto the text.

Unfortunately, there's very little original, or really very interesting, in the body of The Ugly One; there's nothing outside of that single premise. And while von Mayenburg's championing of the importance of the inner self and individuality is never overtly political, antagonistic or too self-righteous, it still seems a little ironic considering that on the whole the play is, quite simply, just a bit bland.

Perhaps I'm the shallow one?
