You don't hear that much. Most writers live to see their names in print. Even with the print media world in decline, print is still considered the most prestigious venue. There's nothing quite like seeing your name printed on the cover of Boston magazine, for example. Even AVN Online's print edition is considered to be more important than the web version. Don't get me wrong, I love the gigs that pay-- whether in print or online-- but I like being on the web more.

Of course, the web holds the future of journalism, so by latching onto the web now, instead of print, I am hitching my wagon to the future of the industry. This just makes sense. Someday, the web will pull ahead of print. In fact, it's already starting. I don't read Page Six, but I am an approved and active commentor on Gawker. Gawker is the future of New York gossip. Blogs are aggregating similar news, making it easier to find. I now hit the Silicon Alley Insider regularly, at the expense of the Wall Street Journal or New York Times deal pages. I got a real laugh when the Silicon Alley Insider announced its "offer" for the NY Times digital media assets-- because it just makes sense.

But, this is secondary to my real motivation. I love being first to market. Like most people in my work, I'm addicted to breaking a story. And, it's getting harder and harder to do in print. Great example: I had a kickass interview with the founders of Zivity back in October. They were extremely open, and I got some great material. In fact, I learned-- first-- that co-founder Cyan Banister would be posing nude for the website (the site offers Web 2.0 and social networking capabilities built around art nude photography).

I filed the story at the end of October for publication in the January issue of AVN Online. This had me pretty jazzed, because it was the issue distributed for the Adult Entertainment Expo and Internext conferences. But, here's the problem. That left two months for somebody else to pick up a story that wasn't being concealed. Cyan's plans were in place site. All you had to do was ask. I just happened to ask first. And, she answered. Who's to stop someone else from asking.

I was surprised at how long it took for the rest of the world to ask this simple, obvious question, but it nonetheless happened too soon for my story. Major technology blog TechCrunch picked up the story on December 30, 2007, beating me by only two fucking days. In fact, depending on when the print magazines shipped, I may have come out a day or two ahead. But, since AVN was changing how it published print articles to the web, my Zivity story never made it, and I lost the opportunity to pitch it to ValleyWag for coverage, which I would have done long before ValleyWag's competitor (TechCrunch) had picked up the story. So, I lost the chance to ingratiate myself into a powerful blog. Damn.

Had I just gone straight to the web, I would have one-- by far. In the adult industry, the concept of breaking news isn't as powerful as it is in the mainstream, but I straddle the two worlds. So, it's pretty important to me. Also, as a porn journalist, I would have beaten the mainstream to market. That would have been a double-victory. But, it didn't happen.

The big challenge is finding a publication that will pay for online-only articles, let alone pay as much as they do for print publications. The market hasn't caught up with my thinking yet, but when it does, I'll be ready.

Tapi, anak-anak tetep jalan.

Amazing!!! they document everything... and we have to learn about it.

Imagine my disappointment when my editor e-mailed me this morning to let me know my Saturday assignment was canceled. The Obama campaign told her the event was closed to the press. ("Busy freelancer makes lists to stay sane.")

I e-mailed my editor that I find it strange a state-wide political rally doesn't want the attention of the media. She said they're saying it's actually an "organizational strategy meeting."

Regardless of the reason, I'm not happy. This was my chance to cover my goal beat - politics - and truly put my favorite element of good journalism to the test - objectivity.

People will always have opinions - that's what makes them human. Contrary to what you may believe, journalists are human too. However, it's their responsibility to both report and write objectively, especially when it comes to politics.

Lord knows I have strong opinions on several issues, but my articles are not the forum to voice them. My job requires me to get and share accurate information.

This would have been a great opportunity to finally test my political objectivity. At least I still have the local elections coming up next month.

Enjoy your weekends. And please remember Randy Pausch: "CMU prof whose 'last lecture' moved millions dies."

It's considered a step on going to be the next punk rocker powerhouse. My first experience on going to the Warped Tour really gets my adrenaline pumping up. With my recent win on the Warped Reporter website for filling out surveys and stuff, not to mention that every Warped tour stop should have a form of a constant, public transit link to ferry passengers from their hometowns to the concert venue and so on, it seems that mission has finally been accomplished.

Going to the Warped Tour is like going to a special operationg in the armed forces. It would had been nice if I were to go to the 10th anniversary edition of the Vans Warped Tour back in 2004 (I was planning to go to the Vancouver stop at that time), but had I went there without explaining my uncle A.J., he would be EXTREMELY mad at me. I would have gone into a "covert operation" on going to the Warped Tour at that time.

Anyways, back to my scenario. This year's Warped Tour was held at "The Flats at Arrow Hall" in Mississauga, which is situated at the International Centre. Now, this has finally put into my "books" of my planned report, that I will plan to present to Kevin Lyman, the founder of the Vans Warped Tour in the near future. Take my advice from my fellow colleague, Ed Drass. He doesn't drive, but he believes that better public transit access should be made all across the GTA. Ed Drass can be appeared on most major newspapers all across Canada, but most importantly, his article "In Transit" can be seen in the Toronto edtion of the free daily newspaper, Metro. Although he does not know what the Warped Tour is, he is quite impressed on what I had made on my blog.

I was thinking of doing a special request on hiring someone to create a special cover page on the Warped Tour and Public Transit. I'm still thinking about it....

My birthday is coming up, it's just around the corner......lol

My editor sent several stories via e-mail today to work on the next few days. Unfortunately, the speakerphone on my temporary cell phone interferes with my digital recorder.

Although I may not always need every interview recorded, it makes me feel secure in my accuracy. I had to rush to Wal-Mart to purchase their cheapest house phone that had speakerphone. However, I found cheap means that the speakerphone cuts in and out, so I have to return in and buy a cheaper one elsewhere first thing in the morning.

I also spoke with the Scripps librarian who helped me get set up with their online article archive system. It will allow me to do the background research necessary to a freelance reporter not covering the same beat every day.

One story my editor offered was to cover a local Obama rally on Saturday. I immediately accepted and told her "a political rally sounds right up my alley."

The pedestrian who was struck by prominent Washington columnist and commentator Robert Novak is in worse shape than first thought, a hospital source tells ABC 7 News.

The victim, a 66-year-old man, is undergoing surgery and was only semi-conscious, the source said.

In an exclusive interview with ABC 7 News, Novak said felt "terrible" about striking a pedestrian Wednesday morning while on his way to work in downtown D.C.

Metropolitan police cited Novak with failure to yield to a pedestrian about 10:07 a.m. at 18th and K streets NW, Novak confirmed to ABC 7 News.

Novak spoke to ABC 7 News as he emerged from a police car at the scene. Novak said he did not know he had struck anyone. Novak said he didn't know anything was wrong until a bicyclist rode ahead of him and blocked traffic. The bicyclist informed Novak he had hit a pedestrian.

In an interview, the bicyclist told ABC 7's Suzanne Kennedy the pedestrian was splayed across Novak's windshield, and there was no way that Novak could not have known he struck someone. The cyclist, David Bono, also said that the pedestrian was in a crosswalk and had the right of way.

Novak admitted he was emotionally shaken by the incident.

Metropolitan Police Department (web|news) officers detained Novak at the scene for about an hour. He was not arrested

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said the pedestrian complained of pain in his arm and was taken to George Washington University Hospital with what were described as minor injuries at the time.

I finally received a new modem from AT&T after I came home Sunday to find mine suddenly turned defective after working for weeks. After even more phone time with technical support today, my Internet was back up and running.

Unfortunately, the search for the cell phone is over, and it will cost $400 to replace it. That's about a month's pay for my articles published in The Fort Pierce Tribune. The problem is that no PDA phone is cheaper, and it's what I need for my pseudo job and future employment.

As I deal with these life issues, my editor said she got bogged down today and will send me the stories she has for me tomorrow. She also asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted to cover a live story that's next week to be turned in at night by laptop. More on that when the time comes.

I do have to mention that I love the fact that my friends are getting married, especially my fellow sorority alumni. I believe we're using our weddings, showers, bachelorette parties, etc. as an excuse to get together again. I lived with most of the girls from last weekend for a couple years in the sorority house, so it was a lot of fun to stay with them - except this time in the sixth-floor suite of a resort overlooking the beach in Fort Lauderdale.

I didn't realize how much I missed them, and it was so much fun talking, going out, playing games and celebrating with my sisters. The best part was that I didn't have to say goodbye - I'll see them all in a month for the wedding.

Sebagian kita barangkali tahu kalau dia reporter Liputan 6 Pagi SCTV.

Although I love talking to people, sometimes I just want to stand and listen among strangers, it

Although I love talking to people, sometimes I just want to stand and listen among strangers, it's sort of being alone but not alone and therapeutic in a strange way, like being in a theatre where you can watch people but not have to interact with them if you don't want to. Well Ahern is a bit like that, there are regulars that turn up but lots of people pass through who are newbies and strangers. It can have it's very amusing times as so many different types of avatars arrive. The other day was one of those times. It started with a wonderful robot figure, quite gallant but strange looking, kneeling in front of me, he stayed there for some time, not speaking but just still.

After he had gone a strange Monster called 'Spider Monkey' started walking towards me, he must have thought that I was his dinner because be tried to chew me, but his teeth must have been blunt because he didn't leave any marks and I survived.

He gave up and walked away to find another victim who was a bit more tasty!! Then this colossal robot appeared, maybe the biggest I have seen anywhere, he filled the whole of the middle arena.

He took off high above the meeting area and hovered there. I suppose I couldn't resist any more and the reporter side of me took over as I decided to follow him to ask him who he was, so I flew up after him. I hovered in front of him and asked him what he was doing and other friendly type of chat, but no, he didn't want to talk. I noticed another poor av near us who had a green 'newbie' label attached to him that he could not shake off, he looked thoroughly miserable as he flew off into the distance with the label in hot pursuit.

I decided to leave the circus and head off home for a bit of real peace and quiet, only in SL could you meet Monsters and Robots and all the wonderful creatures that lurk in peoples minds.

I watched Andrea Mitchell last night on Hardball, and I have to say that she really unfair when talking about the footage that the military put out there for us to see. Talk about Bush Sr. being jealous, Mitchell is really jealous. Heres the video

[redlasso id="7564336b-da5d-4b68-9e90-7584d65fbfb9"]

The Department of Defense was taking footage of Obama with the troops. I mean come on. Obama is meeting with the troops, shaking hands and eating with the troops. Does it even make sense that the Department of Defense would allow a ton of reporters in there crowding out the soldiers, not letting Obama talk with the soldiers but rather have reporters asking questions. Andrea was mad because she didn't get a press conference in Iraq. Again.. Commme Onnn. Obama met with a number Iraqi officials for hours, talking to soldiers for hours, met with Gen. Patreaus, Obama also gave an interview with CBS why would he waste precious time talking to the press for hours when hes supposed to be assessing the ground situation and political situation in Iraq.

Another thing, she calls the interviews by the military "fake", if anyone expects that its the Military job to hold tough interviews, then they are confused. The Department of Defense did the same thing when McCain was in that situation. Plus Obama gave and interview with CBS, which asked tough questions. Does Andrea really expect Obama to stand out in the possibly dangerous streets of Iraq giving press availabilities. Im sure the Audio Visual guys wouldn't even want to attempt to set up press avails. Also the footage that Andrea is talking about came in the first days of Obama trip overseas, how much information about Obamas experience in Iraq does she expect to get.

This morning Obama gave a 45 minute media availablilty and lets hope Andrea Mitchell stepped off her bitter box and onto sensibility land.

NY Times: Worst PR Pitch of the Month/Decade

Found this link on The Big Lead --

http://executivesuite.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/14/pr-pitch-of-the-month-or-maybe-the-decade/

Worst pitch of the month? Sure, I can buy that. Worst of the decade. Give me a break.

Now, this pitch is god-awful in length, but really examine the content -- is it really that bad? As a younger flack, I'm sure I sent something similar to a national, ego-driven, columnist of self-imposed importance, with little response, if any.

But this one has relevancy, it's interesting, if not controversial, and -- what do you know -- it actually got some coverage in the NY Times!

I find it hard to believe in the past 10 years this columnist has not had a worse pitch. Frankly, I think his column just reeks of laziness.

But back to PR impact, the comments can provide a valuable lesson. Let's explore, shall we?

1. The "I would never do that ..." camp. Whatever. While these posters cry PR sanctity from behind their hidden on-line identities, they would love the personal attention this flack has earned for herself.

2. The "she acts like she's your friend - how dare she" camp. Of course she does! It's called personalizing the pitch, people. You have to liven it up, take some chances, break the mold to try to get above the fray with your message. Plus by simply saying, "hope you are well," it doesn't seem to be violating and privacy laws here.

3. The "she did get exposure" camp. I hear you. If this had happened to me, I would kinda dig the personal exposure ... but at the same time I would hope like hell my client didn't see it. Once a pitch is out the door, it's available for media consumption like anything else.

I think ultimately the story here is about reputation. This little exposure had a dramatic impact on the PR professional's reputation, her agency, and the client she is representing. The three-headed reputation monster always needs to be considered before you hit the send button on the pitch.

That being said, I would love to be a fly on the wall when her supervisor and/or client did get wind of this exposure ...

July 17, 2008

By Tammy R. Lawson

I was quite amused by some of the stories that made news last week-two in particular.

First, District Attorney Mary Lacy of Boulder, Colorado, sent a two-page letter to John Ramsey about his murdered daughter, JonBenet, stating, "...we do not consider your immediate family including you, your wife, Patsy, and your son, Burke, to be under any suspicion in the commission of this crime."

Was that not a noble gesture? It's been 12 years since JonBenet died, and Patsy expired two years ago due to ovarian cancer at the age of 49.

While attending junior high school and growing up in the same town as she, I viewed a photo in the newspaper of Miss Paugh being crowned supreme at the state's pageant competition; her daughter's face later clichéd that of the hometown girl an entire state was proud of, even if she did wear too much eyeliner.

That family could have been cleared years ago; DNA evidence was found on the girl that didn't match any family member. In a court of law, that would have been reasonable doubt any defense lawyer could have toyed with just for fun.

But since a court of law was never assembled, a court of public opinion (fueled by unscrupulous journalists reporting innuendo close to the case as factual truth) did so while the district attorney's office and police stood idly by. Public officials knew they mishandled the case from hour one and needed a scapegoat.

At least the office finally apologized, and some would quip they are the sorriest.

How treacherous it was to watch the family's demise, but at least the living can take solace in knowing Patsy Paugh Ramsey died with her character fully intact. There are those living in Boulder who can't even claim that.

Now, here's a piece of friendly advice:

If you are using a microphone in a public forum and do not have complete control of the on/off switch, beware, for you never know who is listening.

Having written that, Jesse Jackson should have known better. Not realizing his mic was on, the modern-day quote maker himself whispered vulgar things during a Fox News program about wanting to cut off parts of Barack Obama's manmade anatomy, and according to the media outlet, we have yet to hear the worst.

Maybe the reverend should rephrase his infamous quote accordingly: "Keep hope alive, and bring me a knife!"

In the same breath, he accused the fellow Chicagoan of "talking down to black folks" by giving moral lectures to African Americans. Oh, the irony.

Jackson could easily be paralleled for his remarks and this was a prime instance of practicing what he doth not preach. After all, Jackson ran for president twice during the Democratic presidential primary in 1984 and again in 1988, so instead of demeaning his fellow man, realizing that he may have helped pave the way for the first black American to possibly be the next leader of the United States might fair him better.

Jackson once said, "If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it, I know I can achieve it." If so, the next time he hypocritically dines with the presidential candidate, secret service will be removing all sharp objects from the table as Obama sports a cup holding something other than coffee.
