Ongelooflijk wat een afval zo'n evenement met zich meebrengt.

Deze ochtend ben ik rond 6 uur opgestaan om de keerzijde van "de feesten" in beeld te brengen.

Normaal zou Artur meegaan, maar het feestvarken lag toen maar net in zijn bed!

Han var partiledare för Ethiopian Democratic Party, vice ordförande i koalitionen Kinijit och vald till vice borgmästare i Addis Abeba, hon var chef på en statlig myndighet och ledamot i parlamentet, men ingen av dem kunde fortsätta arbeta politiskt i Etiopien.
- Vi har egentligen aldrig varit rädda för något, men nu blev det för riskfyllt för oss att återvända, förklarar Admasu Gebeyehu.

Han och hustrun, Mulualem Tarekegn, valde att söka asyl för familjen i Sverige eftersom de inte visste vad som kunde hända om de återvände. De hade vänt sig emot Etiopiens intervention i Somalia och ansågs av regimen vara landsförrädare.
   - Vi visste ju vad som hänt Berhanu Nega och de övriga som dömdes till döden några år tidigare och visste att vi aldrig skulle kunna leva fritt i Etiopien, förklarar Admasu.
   En ny oppositionell rörelse i Etiopien, kallad ”Ginbot 7” leds av Kinijits grundare, Berhanu Nega och samlar krafter från alla oppositionella grupper i landet (NU 17/7).
   - Det innebär att även mindre gerillarörelser som Oromo Liberation Front stödjer Ginbot och de anser att våld är en acceptabel metod, något jag är emot, säger Mulualem.

Trots att diktatorn Meles Zenawi och hans parti EPRDF aktivt motarbetar oppositionen, godtyckligt fängslar politiker med avvikande åsikter och använder övervåld mot demonstranter vänder sig Mulualem och Admasu starkt emot att använda samma metoder.
   - Kinijit arbetar endast med icke-våldsmetoder och det är en mycket viktig ideologisk grund för oss att utgå ifrån. Våld är destruktivt och beväpnade grupper kan aldrig bygga en demokrati. Vi kan inte kräva att någon annan ska offra sitt liv för oss.
   För Mulualem är det också viktigt att vara principfast och konsekvent som liberal politiker. Alla har samma rätt att delta i det politiska livet och samma rätt att uttrycka sina åsikter och det gäller även de som stöder dagens diktaturregim.
   - Samma rättigheter ska gälla alla, men om en person däremot begått en kriminell handling och kränkt någon annans rättigheter, då talar vi om något helt annat och den personens ageranden ska prövas i en oberoende domstol, menar Mulualem.

Enligt Admasu och Mulualem finns det inte många som stöder regimen i Etiopien, särskilt inte i Addis Abeba. Tvärtom finns det regimanhängare som röstade på Kinijit i senaste parlamentsvalet år 2005 då partiet tog över 137 av de 138 platserna i stadsfullmäktige i huvudstaden och dessutom vann de valdistriktets samtliga 26 platser i parlamentet.
   - Vi vann även i andra städer i landet, men bara där det fanns valobservatörer, säger Admasu.
   På de platser där observatörer saknades vann Meles Zenawis parti EPRDF, vilket Kinijit tycker att de internationella organisationerna måste ta som en viktig signal inför kommande val.
   - De åker helt enkelt inte ut på landsbygden och kontrollerar valet utan håller sig till städer med flygplatser och bra kommunikationer.
   Han menar att valobservatörerna lämnar fältet helt öppet för Meles Zenawi att fuska till sig en majoritet i parlamentet.
   - Vi behöver mer engagemang från internationella organisationer och fler valobservatörer. Vi hoppas att svenska organisationer som Svenskt internationellt liberalt centrum kan hjälpa oss med sådana frågor, säger Mulualem.
   - Valet 2005 visar att vi kan skapa ett demokratiskt Etiopien, men det krävs mer stöd, säger Admasu.

Även om de lämnat Etiopien tillfälligt fortsätter de arbeta för den oppositionella rörelsen från Sverige. Mulualem har vittnat inför Europaparlamentet och Admasu skriver just nu på en bok om sina erfarenheter, hela familjen är faktiskt engagerad.
   - Vår sexåring pratar redan om mänskliga rättigheter och förstår skillnaden mellan Sverige och Etiopien, berättar Mulualem.
   Själv läser hon svenska på avancerad nivå och vill så snart som möjligt få en svensk veterinärlegitimation så hon kan börja praktisera sitt yrke även i Sverige.
   - Just nu lever vi här på Lidingö, men min dröm är att en dag återvända till Etiopien och bidra med något gott till mitt land, så snart Meles Zenawis regim har fråntagits makten.

Het laatste stukje van de Aha-route, waar ik door de zomerse storm de laatste keer niet geraakt ben. De route voert ook langs de Poelstraat waar de zogeheten Villa staat, een  naam nog steeds in zwang onder de Sas Van Gentenaren, maar beter bekend als het Spookhuis.

Deze oude directeurswoning, volgens mijn bronnen nu eigendom van de baas van een autozetelfabrikant, staat al ettelijke decennia leeg. De geschiedenis en wilde verhalen kan je onder andere lezen op www.everyoneweb.com/investigation. Ik kan iedereen geruststellen op gebied van spoken. Ik heb niets gezien of gehoord, en er staan ook geen rare verschijnselen op de digitale plaat, ik kreeg geen onverklaarbaar telefoontje en alles werkte precies zoals het moest. Het kan natuurlijk ook dat de spoken schrik van me hadden.

De kunstenaar Marc Cloet had in het vervallen gebouw een kunstwerk geplaats geheten: ‘De Toekomst”. Ik schreef  “had’ omdat onbekenden het kunstwerk hebben vernield. Ik ben het helemaal eens met de gechoqueerde kunstenaar dat niemand het recht heeft werk van anderen te vernietigen. Bronswerk ter waarde van 3000 euro werd meegenomen. Wel vind ik het een beetje naïef om een dergelijk beeld te plaatsen in een vervallen huis waarvan geweten is dat er bezoekers van allerlei slag komen. Even de spoken buiten beschouwing gelaten hebben we nog heksen, satanisten en de ergste soort: tieners.

Ik heb op de route heel wat andere kunstwerken gezien waar ik zeker van ben dat ze geen 3000 euro hebben gekost, zelf geen driehonderd en sommige misschien zelf geen dertig. Misschien ware het beter voor een dergelijke afgelegen locatie (waar kunst zeker moet kunnen) voor een andere optie te kiezen als die beschikbaar is. Echter dit neemt niet weg dat men respect behoeft te hebben voor andermans werk. Dat is  zowel van toepassing op bushokjes maar zeker nog eens zoveel voor kunst. Het is duidelijk een maatschappelijk probleem waar zelf de Lorelei niet van gespaard blijft.

Um 11 Uhr treffen Reporter von JungeMedien Hamburg im Hamburger Sportcenter GYM KWAN ein. Die junge, nette Frau mit den sanften Augen die uns bereits erwartet ist die 21-Jährige Meryem Uslu. Sie ist Deutsche Meisterin der Amateure bis 62 kg und Europameisterin der Amateure bis 56,7 kg im Thaiboxen, beide Titel sind von der IPTA (International Phetjan Thaiboxing Association). Meryem Uslu hat gerade ihr Abitur erfolgreich abgeschlossen und interessiert sich für Fremdsprachen. In ihrer Freizeit trainiert sie hier im GYM KWAN mit ihrem Trainer Lutz Burmester regelmäßig eine der ältesten und härtesten Kampfsportarten der Welt: Muay Thai.

Meryem, wie bist Du eigentlich damals zum Kampfsport - insbesondere zum Thaiboxen - gekommen?

Ich habe ursprünglich mit Karate angefangen. Nach ungefähr vier Jahren habe ich mit Karate aufgehört, ich wollte mich sportlich neu orientieren und kam so auf das Thaiboxen. Ich war sofort vom Thaiboxen begeistert und wusste, das wird mein Sport sein. Schon ein Jahr später bestritt ich erfolgreich meinen ersten Kampf.

Die Männerwelt hat sich langsam - aber schwer - daran gewöhnen müssen, dass Mädchen auch mit Sandsäcken und Pratzen, statt nur mit niedlichen Puppen spielen. Wer waren Deine weiblichen Vorbilder?

Zu meinen weiblichen Vorbildern gehört die Holländische Thaibox Weltmeisterin Lucia Rijker.

Hatten Deine Eltern keine Angst, dass Du beim Sport verletzt wirst?

Nein, das hatten sie nicht, denn sie waren es gewohnt, dass ich schon als Kind öfters mit Blessuren nach Hause kam (lacht).

Machst Du auch Sparring mit Männern?

Ja, ich mache hauptsächlich mit Männern Sparring. Jedoch ist das Sparring mit Frauen härter, da sich die Männer doch eher zurücknehmen. Ich bin froh, dass wir hier im KWAN GYM einige erfolgreiche Frauen, wie Suyin Gelis haben; mit der es oftmals ganz schön zur Sache geht.

Wo liegen die Stärken und Schwächen der Frau im Ring?

Dazu kann ich nur meine Trainer zitieren, die immer sagen :,,Wenn sich Frauen zum Kämpfen entscheiden, tun sie es viel bedingungsloser und verbissener als Männer".

Man hört oft, dass Frauen die besseren Techniker sind. Wie gestaltet sich das Training eigentlich? Wird bei den Frauen ein besonderes Gewicht auf die Ausführung der Techniken gelegt?

Wir in unserem Gym haben es noch nicht feststellen können. Das Training hat viele verschiedene Phasen, wie z.B. Krafttraining, Konditionstraining und auch an der Taktik muss viel gearbeitet werden. Für das Kraft- und Konditionstraining wird hauptsächlich an Pratzen und Sandsäcken gearbeitet.

Auf Deiner Homepage haben wir mal einen Link zu Susi Kentikian entdeckt. Kannst Du Dir vorstellen zum Profiboxen zu wechseln?

Ich habe mir darüber noch keine richtigen Gedanken gemacht, aber sicherlich hätte ich auch Spass am Boxen.

In einem Interview aus dem Jahr 2006 erwähnst Du den Wunsch, einmal in Thailand kämpfen zu dürfen. Hat sich dieser Wunsch schon erfüllt?

Leider noch nicht, aber geplant ist es an der WM 2009 in Bangkok teilzunehmen.

Q&A:
Q: when you said that in the last two years policy has been neutral bec of what's happening, in last two months very aggressive in addressing inflation yet many analysts say that rp, along with other asian central banks, are still behind in addressing inflation.
A: we have followed the prudent approach at the bsp and this has been communicated to the markets. earlier this year what we were seeing was inflation basically caused by supply side factors. the increase in inflation was not unexpected. in latter part of last year we said inflation bound to tick up. but no one...anticipated the virulence and the length of the price spikes in oil and food. in the earlier part of this year we maintained our policy rate. we were reducing interest rates up to january and then we paused. we wanted to observe further developments in terms of inflation picture. when we started to see that core inflation was rising, and inflation was becoming more generalized, plus second round effects were beginnign to seep in, the bsp acted promptly by increasing interest rates. we increased in jun by 25 basis points and again in july by 50 basis points. to put this in the proper context, first round effects of supply shocks would normally be accomodated by monetary policy. monetary policy has limited impact when inflation is mainly coming from supply side. but if inflation starts to spread – and we are looking at the commodities at the cpi whose inflation rates was beyond 5% - target last year was 4% plus or minus. and what we have seen, in late first quarter and second quarter, a number of commodities rising...the current set would include elements from preceding set...the number was increasing, and the commodities where the inflation rate in excess of 5% were also there. it became quite clear that there was a more generalized increase in prices. and then of course the second round effects, wage increases and transport fare hikes. the initial increases factored in...in case of wage increase timing anticipated...we can see that the sentiment of labor is for further wage hikes...and more fare hikes...monetary board acted...decision in june plus decision in july showed that monetary board is prepared to really address issue of inflation which is at top of bsp policy of priority.
Q: will you be willing to sacrifice growth in process of controlling inflation?
A: what we want to establish is price stability...consistent and supportive of sustained econ growth. there may be costs in the short run, but the way we analyze it...sources of growth as i mentioned on the production side is services, and services is not as capital intensive...on expenditure it's consumption, driven by the continuing increase in overseas filipino remittances. the impact of this policy move by bsp is not going to be large on output, the impact on outputs not going to be that large. looking ahead, really important that low inflation envt is established. cost to econ of prolonged high inflation could be even higher. so we have to act now. it has always been inflation...there are concerns on how impact on econ growth.
Q: comments that it is in asia where epicenter of inflation located...thoughts about suggestion from indon central bank gov of coordinated response to inflation?
A: made comment earlier that if markets saw concerted effort among central banks to tackle inflation, effort would have more effective impact on inflation. if central banks together move to fight inflation, would have bigger impact on inflation environment. epicenter...hard to say because global inflation is being caused by a number of factors. immediate causes high oil and food prices. what is behind high oil, food prices?many things. it it not just demand, but it is also what is happening in financial markets. and what is happening in financial markets is clearly not taking place in asia, it's taking place in other parts of the world. so i would not see that characterization as accurate and this is because inflation has many causes, and these causes are from different parts of the world.
Q: what kind of concerted action needed?
A: seeing that now, in fact already started. central banks have shifted to tightening bias. markets are beginning to recognize this, there is now a serious steps being taken by central bank to address the problem of inflation.
Q: just tightening monetary policy not enough?
A: that will then lead us to areas outside the jurisdiction of central banks. if you focus on monetary policy the picture will not be complete. there's a menu of option that will include supply side measures in order to address this problem of inflation which in our case is from abroad, global in character,and addressed mainly supply side factors. there's a need to improve productivity, distribution systems so goods can be efficiently delivered to proper markets. there's a need to improve overall financial conditions in the economy including the health of the banking systems in the different countries.
Q: measures implemented by different countries underway?
A: in the case of rp, we have the monetary policy actions, at the same measures that had been pursued by depts like the dept of agri to improve farm output...that will contribute to easing...
Q: we've already passed first half of year...initial estimates on first half of gdp and inflation figures for 2008...give us some forecast for 2009?
A: let me talk about inflation. as i mentioned earlier, inflation projected to average between 9-11%. so far up to the first half of 2008, average 7.6%. this would indicate that inflation will likely tick up some more in the months ahead. and last week we announced it could peak at around 12%. on a year to year basis for certain months this year. but average for whole year, jan to dec 2008, is projected at bet 9-11%. if you look at trend of inflation, further uptick to slightly 12%, stay there for few months before starting to go down towards 4th quarter of this year. that downtrend in inflation will continue in 2009. likely that we will see year on year inflation at double digit levels up to first quarter of 2009. for whole year of 2009 the average inflation now projected at between 6-8%. gdp...that's the area of neda but we expect that because of the buoyant econ conditions, econ will continue to grow... different forecast of agencies and institutions, almost all forecast gdp of more ...anything between 5-6% respectable growth given prevailing conditions (2009) that would depend on a number of factors including what happens to inflation. right now we're saying there's going to be a downtrend...lot also depends on what happens to export markets, particularly US. domestic demand continues to be quite strong, that should support sustained growth in 2009. we continue to forecast an increase in overseas remittances which should buoy consumption next year plus bpo sector continue to be robust.
Q: in terms of ofw remittances...growth rates?
A: for this year the projection is at 10% growth. so far for the first 5 months, 14.7% actual so it's slightly above. for 2009 also projecting a 10% growth for overseas filipino remittances. there continues to be demand for filipino workers.in fact the poea issued report showing the number of
deployed workers in first half of 2008 up by 33%. that's the first reason. the second is there are filipinos willing to work abroad so there's a demand and supply condition that should provide for the expectation that remittances will continue to grow. in terms of demand, people asking whether affected by subprime and credit crunch slowdown..so far we haven't seen that happen. think there are also other sources of demand that tend to upset possible slowdown in some of our labor markets. there continues to be strong demand from middle east.the middle east countries benefitted from high price of oil and there's lot of construction, lot of econ activity. some countries (have) aging population...
Q: no softening?
A: yes, that's right.
Q: how crucial are remittances to econ overall...if that disappears, or halved, how much would we suffer?
A: remittances...account for about one tenth of gdp, one tenth of econ. it's significant...merchandise trade deficit but current account surplus, meaning the trade deficit is being covered by remittances. 17.4b expected in remittances this year. significant from balance of payments, foreign exchange point of view. about 1.4b every month. this fuels consumption. and there is normally a lag between inflow of remittances and transformation of remittances into actual demand or consumption. so if you see an increase in remittances now, impact on domestic econ would be later, maybe
following quarter. given this robust growth in remittances, this should help support sustain econ growth.
Q: fight against inflation more impact..we belong to asean, have econ cooperation...regional steps like in 1997 crisis...meeting, systematic cooperation to fight?
A: there are regular meetings of asean central banks and during these meetings current policy issues are being discussed. there is continued discussion among central banks in region and how to cope with increase or acceleration.
Q: not one game plan for region...?
A: i think we see a trend. among the central banks in the region, the trend is towards tightening. but there is no specific plan that each and every central bank is supposed to...there are differences in econs of different countries. these differences have to be taken into account in reaching a decision in monetary policy by central banks.
Q: have these meetings become more regular?
A: we have regular meetings. the central banks in the region are now closer in terms of exchange of info, in terms of discussions, important policy issues or topics. sometimes we don't even have to set up formal meeting, you just pick up phone and call up counterpart...
Q: have you done that?
A: calling, something that central banks, not only governor, even central bank officials and staff also call their counterparts in other countries. closer cooperation now..
Q: why would inflation go down?
A: start coming down during fourth quarter. what will bring that about? we have seen some moderation in increases in food prices. while oil has continued to be volatile, it's still elevated, but it is not rising as fast as have seen in the past, at some point clearly the market mechanism will have to kick in, certain price level consumption will have to decline. impact prices in the future..if global slowdown, moderate future increase in oil prices. other thing is statistical base effects...we had low inflation rates last year...and then it picked up starting first quarter. now you'll have the reverse, base effects going to latter part of this year and 2009. trend in headline inflation, bet dec 2007 and jan 08, pick up of one percentage point. as i mentioned earlier, that was assessed to be due to supply side factors so we had to wait for other information, wait to see other indications of where inflation rate is going, effects on supply side would be..we stopped cutting interest rates when that happened. as soon as we saw inflation spreading...even if oil prices increase, not as fast as increase we have seen in the past. good if oil prices decline, that's also a possibility, because today at 126. they went down again...the market has got to adjust...just reading the reports coming from the us, car industry...even manufacturers have adjusted no longer producing the gas guzzlers. the market mechanism will have to kick in at some point.
Q: impact on inflation of suspended vat on oil?
A: if that leads to reduction in domestic oil prices, or deceleration in increase, that would be positive for inflation. it intends to maintain vat. and there are other measures implemented by govt to help address high oil prices like suspension of import tariffs and then to help marginalized sectors there's also targeted cash subsidy...it's supposed to be a well-focused program, targetting poorest of poor. important that fiscal consolidation is maintained. has to be clearly demonstrated. an increase in revenue collection can provide flexibility to govt to help those most affected by global factors.with more resources govt in better position to provide assistance to those who help it most. collect taxes, and pursue infrastructure programs and at the same time have resources for extending assistance to poorest of poor.
Q: what is helping econ growth is strong bpo industry and remittances..banking system remains strong...these are main factors, what are the other factors...projections for bpo industry?
A: if you look at national income accounts for first quarter, services grew fastest. in services you have bpo, and then you have tourism..sector with huge potential. that has to be developed. there's still a great deal of potential in tourism. infra is required to develop. idea is to make access easier to beautiful places in phils...national income accounts from expenditure side, it's consumption. consumption contributor even in 1997. during that period, countries showed negative growth rates. we did not and that's because consumption continued to grow. and consumption is significantly driven by remittances, demand for merchandise, by beneficiaries of overseas filipinos. increase in
remittances now will support consumption in the future. those are the things that contribute to buoyant demand conditions...
Q: were you saying the central bank limited to tightening monetary policy because that is your province...nothing more that can be done to help inflation now?
A: in the short term, monetary policy would be basically geared towards controlling inflation. it's monetary policy that's the main tool for controlling inflation by central bank. in terms of how it's done, also important to manage the public's inflation expectations. bec if inflation expectations become unhinged, that can lead to expectations of higher inflation and demand for wage increases, transport fare hikes,and can lead to vicious cycle. we have to be able to manage inflation expectation properly and avoid a disanchoring of inflation expectations. on supply side, there's scope for banking policies that would encourage more credits and more loans to agriculture and other sectors of the econ...and this we have been pushing..more credits to sme sector. pretty soon we're going to launch a credit surety fund, next month. that will encourage banks to lend more to micro, small and medium enterprises. surety fund that will be put up by well ranked coops with local govt in area where these funds will be put up. provide surety or a form of insurance to the loans that will be provided by the banks to micro and small medium enterprise. in case of a default, the bank can collect very quickly from the surety fund. it's a guarantee. bank will have to demonstrate exhausted all means of collected before guarantor. surety fund is very quick, you don't have to wait very long. pilot it in one of the provinces, in cavite. working now with the prov of cavite and a number of cooperatives from the place. no amount yet, at this point in time
Q: loan amount?
A: would be the regular average amount one normally gives to micro or small enterprise. micro up to 150k. average loan more like in the 20k. smes bigger. smes no definition of how much loan
is...defined in terms of total amount of assets...could be for any sector that would have a requirement for this type of loan...
Q: where will money come from?
A: from their own fund. hopefully able to replicate in other parts of the country, as soon and as fast as we can. what is important here is there are well-run cooperatives in the province and the local govt is interested in participating. we have those ingredients in province of cavite.
Q: those taking on loan won't be required to have collateral?
A: still except micro. tried to simplify documentary requirements, in fact micro enterprises don't have to have collateral so no need for documentary...micro also don't have to submit itrs, another simplification of documentary requirements...exemption from submission of itrs in province of bir, time bound, supposed to expire oct this year. plans to request for extension...
Q: oil prices...how much drained from econ by higher oil prices?
A: import about 110m barrels of crude oil products every year. for every dollar increase that's 110 m dollars. rp also able to diversify energy sources, oil accounts for 36% in energy mix. geothermal, hydro, natural gas. we've been able to reduce dependence of phil econ in imported oil over the years. the 36% is there mainly because the transport sector still almost 100% dependent on oil.
Q: liquidity?
A: have to see when we get the final numbers. liquidity is one of the indicators that we look at to judge whether there is enough money in the system. the other one is credits, and credits have been
going by 10-12%. so the companies that require financing have access to credit, continue to have access to credit market. in addition to this...can also raise funding from bond and equity market. not limited to credit market have other options. this is because financial markets have improved in phils.
Q: on inflation...peak in oct?
A: the peak..the numbers we're looking at for third quarter start of 4th quarter, tend to cluster. there is basically a levelling off...looking at specific figures, there can be some moderation already in early part of fourth quarter. oct. but slight moderation...peak is not oct, earlier than that but moderation starting october. the trend...we can just focus on trend...still uptick, then levelling off. it will flatten...the curve, and start coming down in the fourth quarter.
Q: conditions after hike how much tightening?
A: have to asses that.
Q: foreign exchange...weakness longer or temporary?
A: we have seen the hikes..peso recovered since that time in reaction to policy of monetary board. reacting positively again to lower oil prices, opened at 44...below the close...there's fundamental
support coming from the balance of payments.
Q: fdi how look compared to 6months ago?
A: we think that fdi by non residents in phils would be approximately the same as last year.
slightly lower but in vicinity of figure that we saw last year. there are investments in pipeline particularly mining, bpo, manufacturing. if you look at companies that plan to invest in phils this year, more or less get the same amount.

Gisteren had ik dan een shootje met Selina en Bart was daar voor mijn haar en de MU ! We hebben super veel fun gehad :-);-) en de foto's zullen alweer cool worden , Selina kennende :-) Bart moest mijn haar super super hard creperen en hij heeft er een hele bus schuim ingespoten en lak ! amai ! het was de moeite :-) daarna moest ik een hele bus cremespoeling gebruiken om mijn haar terug deftig te krijgen ! ik zag er op het einde wel uit als BILL met mijn haar zo omhoog ! hahaha dat was wel even lachen :-)

Voor heel even leek het onderste tafereel niet langer van toepassing...

Je ne nie pas que certains chauffeurs réussissent à aller chercher un pécule dans les six chiffres, loin de là.  Le système syndical - le monopole syndicalo-étatique - fait en sorte que plusieurs "anciens" parviennent à toucher des salaires annuels très intéressants.  Ce sont d'autres points qui me chicotent, à savoir d'abord le fait que le JdeM prétende détenir un article "exclusif", alors que cela fait des mois que je ne me cache pas pour le dire, et que beaucoup de gens sont aussi au courant de la chose.  Je présume qu'il y collent le mot "exclusif" parce qu'ils sont les premiers à en faire la une de leur quotidien.

L'autre point, c'est le nombre d'heures travaillées.  L'article mentionne que les chauffeurs n'ont aucune limite d'heures travaillées, et qu'ils peuvent ainsi faire "de l'overtime" autant qu'ils le veulent.  Ce point m'agace de deux façons; premièrement, au contraire de nombreux autres professionnels de la route, qui doivent tenir un "logbook", et qui sont assujettis à un nombre d'heures fixé par la loi, les chauffeurs de la STM ne semblent pas être sujets à la fatigue, du moins si l'on se fie à ce point précis de leur convention collective.  Deuxièmement, ce sont ces mêmes chauffeurs qui se plaignaient, lors des dernières négociations, des conditions exécrables dans lesquelles ils exercent leur métier.  C'est drôlement curieux, que ces conditions deviennent beaucoup plus endurables lorsqu'elles sont payées "à temps-et-demi".

Cela revient donc à ce que je disais l'automne et l'hiver dernier, à un certain Martin, entre autres, quand je disais que les chauffeurs de la STM se plaignaient le ventre plein.  Avec la possibilité de gagner 100,000$ et plus par an, et un syndicat qui les protège contre à peu près tout, ils n'ont vraiment pas à se plaindre.

Washington, July 21, 2008: Ahead of the crucial trust vote that will decide the fate of the UPA government, the US on Monday said it will move forward on the nuclear deal with any dispensation in New Delhi -- even if it is in minority.

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Richard Boucher said Bush administration will have no problem in dealing with a minority government as "minority governments are common around the world."

"I don't have them off the top of my head, but I mean, minority governments are common around the world," he said.

"You can't say, 'Oh, well, we are going to stop dealing with you till the next election or until some new coalition or something. That's not for us to say," Boucher said commenting on the future of the nuclear deal if the UPA government fails to win the confidence vote in the Lok Sabha.

He said the US will continue to work with any legitimate government in India New Delhi to push forward the deal.

"If they have a legitimate government -- people who are empowered to run the government -- that's who we'll deal with," Boucher said.

"In terms of the United States and India, we deal with the legally constituted government of India -- whoever is running that government at the time, that's who we sign agreements with. So, that's not a problem for us," he said.

He said the Bush administration was ready to "go as far as" possible to see conclusion of the deal.

"We are going to work with the Indians, we are going to work with the Congress and we are going to take this as far as we can go," Boucher said.

"We are very excited by the prospect, we'll see what happens in the confidence vote, but however far the Indians could go, we are going to try to take it that far or further. So, that's what we are going to do," he said.

May not be "too late"

Asked about whether Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was little too late in pushing ahead with the deal, Boucher said it may not be "too late."

"I guess what I'll say is it's never too late. This is not a deal between a government and another government. It's a deal between the United States and India -- it's good for India, it's good for the United States."

On whether main opposition BJP's contention that without parliamentary approval the UPA government does not have the moral right to conclude the nuclear deal, Boucher said "on our side, there is no legal problem or moral problem".

"On their side there may not be a legal question, but there's always political questions and they're going to have to figure that one out themselves

"(But) As long as they are a duly constituted government, we are happy to deal with them," he said.

On the timeframe left for the 110th Congress to clear the deal, Boucher said the administration would try to push it and if the present Congress could not ratify it then the new Congress would take it up.

"As we move through, if we can move it to the point where the president can certify all the things that he has to certify, take the package and send it to Congress, we'll do that. If the Congress is in a position to act on it, I am sure they'll try to do that.

"So, I think, everybody wants to take it as far as we can. I can't promise what the US Congress will do, but if we take it to some point and times expires on this Congress, then the new Congress will have to take it up -- that's all you can say. So, that's our pledge."

Nu har jag kommit hem från Holland. Det suger att jag inte kan berätta vad jag har gjort där än men jag ska berätta varför.

Jag har varit där och gjort ett reportage och det kommer inte att tryckas i tidningen förrän i slutet av Augusti och jag kan inte skriva vad reportaget är innan dess. Men när det är Augusti ska ni få läsa artikeln och veta vad jag har gjort. Allt jag kan säga är att det har gjort fruktansvärt ont.

Men nu är jag i Stockholm i alla fall och ska flyga hem imorgon mitt på dan nån gång. Då ska jag vara hemma en vecka och det ska bli väldigt skönt.

Vandaag een poging gedaan de volledige Aha-kunst route te Assenede in het kader van Jazzenede te doen. Ik schrijf een poging, daar ik iets voorbij halfweg overvallen werd, zoals menig ander wandelend of fietsend slachtoffer, door een zomerstorm. Gelukkig staat die band nog steeds plat (fietsenmaker met 'verlof', en alhoewel ik me voorgenomen heb het zelf te doen heb ik nog geen tijd gevonden) en was ik met de auto (zie foto's).

Het is niet mijn bedoeling hier zinnige woorden over de kunst te zeggen die ik heb ontmoet, laat staan dat ik mij zou begeven in de sferen der kunstkritiek. Laten we het er bij houden dat niet alles mij evenveel kon boeien. Dit werk van curator en deelnemend kunstenaar Wim Holvoet trok echter wel mijn aandacht. Niet alleen is de associatie en inspiratie voor de hand liggend, de uitvoering vind ik ook goed gedaan. Bovendien is het dit jaar tevens het jaar van de patat (www.potato2008.org), dus een treffelijker beeld dan dit kon de man niet brengen.

Onlangs was er die belangrijke capoeira-afspraak in Oostende. Eerst een demo en daarna nog eens opnames voor 1000 Zonnen. Intussen is het al uitgezonden op televisie en heeft natuurlijk God en klein pierke die uitzending gemist.

Gelukkig bestaat er nog iets zoals youtube :-)

Late last week, there was a surge in searches for the graphic representation of Swastika so much so it showed up on Google Trends. TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington wrote a post on it here and mentioned it in a tweet here. It was Arrington’s tweet that I responded to, admittedly less calmly than I do with strangers, and it got me the following response from Michael Arrington:

I was also promptly blocked from following TechCrunch’s tweets, which is really no loss since being more ‘global’ in my outlook, I rarely read the Valley-centric site.

Meanwhile the ongoing conversation on Arrington’s post got hotter until Arrington came out to say that the meaning of the Swastika had been changed by World War II so the rest of us should just ‘get over it’. Expectedly that piece of advice went down like a lead balloon with many of TechCrunch’s readers – including many westerners who have travelled to and worked in other cultures – and the discussion there on got hotter and hotter.

Like much else, this is a multi-faceted controversy. I have taken a whole week to write about this for one reason - I want to have a reasoned approach to debate, and sometimes it is best to let things cool down a bit.

About the Swastika

I do not consider the Swastika a Hindu religious symbol but as identities go, it is a part of my complex, multi-layered, multi-faceted identity. However, I do know that the Swastika does not need me or a billion other Indians and Chinese to defend its honour, so to speak. Many have written about it with more genuine and simply more authority than the gentlemen telling us to ‘get over it’.

That is, of course, my rational mind at work. But if you, like me, lived in Europe, the frequent doses of revisionism would get your otherwise placid and rational goat too.

Prince Harry wears a Swastika on his armband for a fancy dress party – arguably in bad taste for the second in line to a European throne – and alarmists in the European Union rush to seek a ban on the Swastika. The ban was narrowly avoided due to opposition from Britain and other states.

As revisionism goes, Neha raised a pertinent point in her comment on TechCrunch’s post:

“Just because the KKK burned men on stakes - do you get all worked up about someone Googling for the crucifix?”

Worth a pause for thought, isn’t it?

Since we are all so tetchy, isn’t it time to make a tough choice?

Should we stop discussing the meaning of any and all religious or cultural symbols altogether? Or should we seek not to display our ignorance in such full bloom and instead seek a constructive dialogue that enhances our awareness?

What will it be?

About Arrington and 'normal'

Leaving aside the debate about "normal" on the web, the more pertinent point is Arrington's advice (or whatever you wish to call it) to ‘get over it’.

It is unclear what we need to get over.

Should we get over a few thousand years of history and culture for a few years of war?

Why should a few billion - that is billion with a 'B' - people, whose culture and values are embodied in the symbol, give it up for a madman's antics?

Over on the TechCrunch post, B. Shantanu made the point whether it is not time now to re-assess the understanding of the Swastika in an increasingly globalised world. Arrington did not respond but one of the commenters, who identifies himself as Frank Church on TechCrunch’s post, said:

“Sure, Mike will just change the opinion of every uneducated and unthoughtful person in the western world, and, “reassert the original meaning and significance of the symbol”. You are also part of the Tard-wagon? If consumer perception were easily manipulated, advertising spend would be lots smaller than $200B+. Moron.”

Notwithstanding the unwarranted epithet at the end of that point – after all, this is not a discussion about breeding – this commenter has a point. Perhaps we are giving Michael Arrington too much importance. After all, he just writes a Valley rag about Valley businesses that even some stalwarts of the Valley do not read (I have received some Tweets to the effect but it would be churlish to stick them here). To him, it is his bread and butter. To the rest of us, it is a drop of information in the enormous ocean of knowledge that we need to survive in a growingly complex and truly globalised world.

The world that no longer brooks quietly any arbitrary revision of its heritage.

John Maynard Keynes famously said:

“When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, Sir?”

That Hitler’s misuse of the Swastika changed the western view of the Swastika is a fact. Some changed their mind after World War II.

But globalisation of the world economy and the shifting sands of the balance of power is also a fact. Time to change our minds again?

About Google and corporate censorship

Subsequently, Google apologised to its users for the 'mistake'. Google’s apology says:

“We have an automated system to identify and remove inappropriate or offensive material in Hot Trends. In rare cases, when such material is missed, we manually remove these results from our Hot Trends list. We apologize to any users who were offended by this situation.”

So, let me understand this. After Arrington, now Google is the arbiter of ‘inappropriate’ and ‘offensive’ on the web. Right?

Pardon me for asking the obvious but isn’t the entire premise of Google’s business is that the search is ‘automated’? Did Google not want us to believe that “the algorithm rules, ok?”? So does it or does it not?

If the algorithm does rule, I suppose this means that I can now not discuss Swastika in my private emails on Gmail either because it would bring up ‘inappropriate’ materials up in the ads on the sidebar.

If it does not, I assume it would be one of those ‘rare cases’ of Google manually removing those results. Would it not? Does that not mean that the emails are no longer private? Is that technically not snooping? If not, what is the term for it?

Either way, Google’s credibility is in question.

Google faced considerable flak when it decided to censor materials in exchange for getting entry into China. They defended it saying that some access is better than no access. They also tried to convince us – and nobody is really convinced - that this was in step with their ‘don’t be evil’ policy.

With India and Indians, Google has a different struggle at hand.

India is one of the very few countries where Orkut, not Facebook, is the social networking site of choice. It is unclear how much money, if any, Orkut makes for Google. But what it does do for Google is get a captive next-generation audience to its products and services. That is nothing to sneeze at, not in an increasingly globalised world, which may not be on Arrington’s Valley centric radar but definitely is on Google’s global radar.

Tell us, Google, do you really think it is worth it?

End piece

The brouhaha however confirms a few things for me.

In a world, where a generation is growing up with the internet as their virtual sixth sense, discretion is not a better part of valour; it is an essential value that needs to be evoked every now and then. It remains important that readers are able to separate “journalism” from “commentary”. The former should be value-free reportage seeking as much balance as possible, the latter nothing but a value-based comment.

The controversy also shows that the web will shape the dialogue on cultural hegemonies. It will be an ugly sausage-making process, and we shall all be witness to and active participants in it.

And last but not the least, anybody, who says ‘I don’t do politics’ better revise their cliché quickly.

Modern business and globalisation is nothing, but politics. The sooner we recognise that, the sooner we will likely understand the dynamics, the better equipped we will be to strategise to win in the ever-changing world.

Berhanu Nega föddes 1958 i Debrezeit i Etiopien. Han blev tidigt aktiv i den politiska studentrörelsen som gjorde uppror mot Derg-regimen. Efter att öppet ha kritiserat det kommunistiska partiet EPRP fängslades han. Kort efter frisläppandet fick han asyl i USA där han studerade och slutligen doktorerade i nationalekonomi. Efter kommunistregimens fall återvände Berhanu till Etiopien där han fortsatte sin akademiska karriär samtidigt som han arbetade politiskt och hoppades på ett mer liberalt Etiopien. Så kom Meles Zenawis maktgrepp om landet att stärkas och situationen förvärrades snabbt för de som tyckte annorlunda.
   - Den dagen vi tar över ska vi inte göra samma misstag som andra gjort. I Kambodja trodde man på bättre dagar, men så kom Pol Pot. Vårt folk måste lita på oss och förstå att det blir bättre när vi tar över, säger Berhanu Nega och menar att det finns gott om liknande exempel med Zimbabwe som är särskilt aktuellt.

I valet 2005 tog den oppositionella koalitionen CUD över alla platser utom en i Addis Abebas stadsfullmäktige. Berhanu Nega valdes till borgmästare. Men han tillträdde aldrig posten eftersom den politiska situationen var mycket ansträngd i landet och Berhanu Negas seger oroade regeringen. Hundratals ungdomar skadades och flera dödades i våldsamma kravaller när premiärminister Meles Zenawi beordrat militären att använda skarp ammunition mot oppositionens demonstranter i huvudstaden. Det var då Berhanu Nega fängslades tillsammans med ett 50-tal andra oppositionella politiker i den ökända tortyranstalten Kaliti.

Den liberala ideologin är viktig för Berhanu som flera gånger nämner att de måste lägga de etniska skillnaderna bakom sig och istället fokusera på de som tycker som de själva - de som har samma ideologiska grund. Trots att Berhanu Nega kan tyckas ha en god grund för att avsky den sittande regimen visar han inte något hat mot diktatorn Zenawi.
   - Vi måste respektera andras åsikter - även de vi ogillar, ingen har rätt att ta ifrån någon annan dess medborgerliga rättigheter.
   Berhanu Nega är till sättet en mycket lugn och verkar till och med lite tillbakadragen i regndugget utanför Årsta Folkets Hus. Kanske är det de många och långa resorna från hemmet i USA som tar ut sin rätt, men han missar inte ett tillfälle att skapa kontakter.
   - Jag hoppas verkligen att vi kan samarbeta med folkpartiet i Sverige. Vi har ju samma ideologiska grund, säger han och berättar att han redan nu etablerat kontakter med partiet.
   Faktum är att det redan finns folkpartister som jobbar med situationen i Etiopien. En etiopier från Stockholm undrar om jag känner Birgitta Ohlsson. Jag nickar.
   - Åh, hon är vårt ljus, säger han med ett stort leende.

Politik: Tidigare kampanjstrateg för Coalition for Unity and Democracy. Vald till, men aldrig tillträtt posten som borgmästare i Addis Abeba. Initiativtagare till och Ginbot 7, en ny etiopisk oppositionsrörelse.
