get a millenial and a gen-xer in the room and i can almost guarantee you, the gen-xer will value "the bends" and the millenial will be about "ok computer" (or maybe kid a/amnesiac if they're REALLY pretentious). nate, at twenty-two, is a millenial. jimmy, tail end of gen x. the argument would get heated, and end in hearts broken. people don't fuck around with radiohead.

um, what else about this page? fourth panel is ahmed demonstrating his elite and somewhat illegal medical skillz he uses to help out his friends without health insurance. (see character profile for details). jimmy also doesn't call him out because you can't get mad at the chill & chubby guy. it's just not possible.

in other news, i was watching harry potter & the prisoner of azkaban and was astounded by how much ream-us (SOOOOO GAAAAY) lupin's actor resembles jimmy. maybe it's just the pedostache (which actually in jimmy's case is more a hipster/ironic stache). CHECK IT OUT.

http://www.davidthewlis.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=10&pos=1

except jimmy is a brunette. no gingers, plz. also jimmy eats food. he is a red-blooded american, after all!

Before I start on the last picture in my series on Dante and Hogwarts I want to finish on all essays

Before I start on the last picture in my series on Dante and Hogwarts I want to finish on all essays that accompany the pictures. And so, I worked lately on the essay going with this picture of the Moon Sphere:

The eternal pearl received us in itself,

as water does a ray of light

and yet remains unsundered and serene.

Paradiso, Canto II Lines 34 – 36

“Quickly as a bolt strikes, flies and releases from its catch” Dante enters the celestial kingdom with Beatrice. The poet is in lose of words to describe this experience. He retreats into the mythical realm when he compares his transformation during his ascent with that of the fisherman Glaucus who turns unexpectedly into a god by eating some weed he found at the shore. Plus, he invents the word ‘trasumanar’ – to transhumanize, to pass beyond the human.

‘To pass beyond the human’ means for Dante to get closer to the divine. In terms of Jung, Dante speaks of an ongoing process of individuation. The step from profane ego-orientated life to a more spiritual, immortal reality cannot be taken without the conquest of the instinctual side for the conscious. For a moment the seeker can’t clutch to outworn ideas and conventional patterns anymore. He looses contact with every aspect of the human self and sinks down to the level of the animal kingdom.

My transformations in those days were -- were terrible. It is very painful to turn into a werewolf. I was separated from humans to bite, so I bit and scratched myself instead. The villagers heard the noise and the screaming and thought they were hearing particularly violent spirits.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 18: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs

Remus Lupin experiences the ‘loss of soul’, as primitive cultures call it, every full moon. Painfully, he turns into a monster without any trace of human awareness. For the year he worked at Hogwarts the Wolfsbane Potion, Professor Snape prepared for him, controlled the worst effects and made him keep his mind.

Yet, individuation is a very personal process and can’t be spurred on from outside. The monster that devours the conscious and holds it captive must be overcome. And traditionally, it can’t be killed. The seeker must find over ways to integrate his instinctual side. Hence, Remus Lupin had still a distance to travel for success. So, it was only consequent that his Boggart remained the Moon.

However, the Moon – first of the planets Dante visits in Paradise – can also be Lupin’s rescue.

'I shall now reshape your intellect,

thus deprived, with a light so vibrant

that your mind will quiver at the sight.

Paradiso, Canto II lines 109 – 111

In the darkness of the soul’s night one’s intellect, the male Logos is no use. Or, echoing Aristotle Beatrice explains Dante that experience and man-made categories are perfect for human science, yet it needs another approach to understand what God and man is.

Moon represents Nature. And with its inconsistent appearance it seems to be chaotic. Yet it has its own kind of order. Once our eyes grow accustomed to the Moon’s pale glow, the usual boundaries become blurred and we discover a new world with our instinctual side.

Remus Lupin’s new world answers to the name of Nymphadora Tonks. Her appearance is as changeable as the Moon’s shape. More often than not however, she glows with bubblegum pink hair and in a punky-funky outfit. As the Moon’s essence is reflection, she reflects Lupin’s mischief maker side he lived with the Marauders.

With that she stands in one row with his friends James, Sirius and Peter. If it was not for a woman’s secret power and her magic, Lupin’s life might have gone on like. Yet, Tonks became – what the full moon symbolises – a mother.

Male logic told Lupin to flee:

‘I – I made a grave mistake in marrying Tonks. I did it against my better judgement and I have regretted it very much ever since.’

‘I see,’ said Harry, ‘so you’re just going to dump her and the kid and run off with us?’

Lupin sprang to his feet: his chair toppled over backwards, and he glared at them so fiercely that Harry saw, for the first time ever, the shadow of the wolf upon his human face.

‘Don’t you understand what I’ve done to my wife and my unborn child? I should never have married her, I’ve made her an outcast!’

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 11: The Bribe

Had he done so, he had broken a vow – his marriage vow. Done for a greater good he would have been the perfect Moon dweller as the Moon is for those of the saints who failed to keep a vow. They were in their life as inconstant as the light o the Moon so to say.

'You want to know if a vow left unfulfilled

may be redeemed by some exchange

that then secures the soul from challenge.'

Paradiso, Canto 5 Lines 13 - 15

Dante’s question doesn’t stay unanswered. Beatrice explains that God’s greatest gift to mankind is a free will. A vow is a sacrifice of this freedom in benefit of somebody else’s good or the greater good. If one doesn’t keep to one’s word, one takes the freedom back and is therefore possessing an ill-gotten gift. That means one has to remain faithful to one’s vows unless it was a sinful vow from the beginning. Hence, a vow stays a vow. Yet, the substance of a vow can be changed if a greater sacrifice replaces the earlier one.

Lupin, of course, offered a greater sacrifice, he thought:

‘I thought you’d say that,’ said Lupin, looking disappointed. ‘But I might still be of some use to you. You know what I am and what I can do. I could come with you to provide protection. There would be no need to tell me exactly what you were up to.’

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 11: The Bribe

He offered in the consequence his life for the protection of the only hope of wizardkind and therefore for the greater good. Yet, his offer to vow himself to Harry was declined by him. What he took first not very good to say the least, was his rescue. He didn’t need to break his marriage vow and still was rescued by the Moon:

‘Yes, yes, she’s had the baby!’ shouted Lupin. All around the table came cries of delight, sighs of relief: Hermione and Fleur both squealed, ‘Congratulations!’ and Ron said, ‘Blimey, a baby!’ as if he had never heard of such a thing before.

‘Yes - yes – a boy,’ said Lupin again, who seemed dazed by his own happiness. He strode round the table and hugged Harry; the scene in the basement of Grimmauld Place might never have happened.

‘You’ll be godfather?’ he said, as he released Harry.

‘M – me?’ stammered Harry.

Harry felt overwhelmed, astonished, delighted: now Bill was hurrying to fetch wine and Fleur was persuading Lupin to join them for a drink.

‘I can’t stay long, I must get back,’ said Lupin, beaming around at them all: he looked years younger than Harry had ever seen him. ‘Thank you, thank you, Bill.’

In the end, when Lupin had accepted with Tonks’ help that the basic stability behind all life and his inner indestructible essence has to be given to the next generation, his days became brighter. I bet his Boggart changed too and he was able to say as Picarda said in Paradiso, Canto 3 Lines 64 – 72:

Along with the other shades, she smiled,

then answered me with so much gladness

she seemed alight with love's first fire:

so that we long for only what we have

Yes, I finished the fifth picture and that means I am half way through my series. It’s time to

Yes, I finished the fifth picture and that means I am half way through my series. It's time to recap what I tried to transpose and check with what I really realised. Dante's Paradise is a piece of cultural heritage. Many artists have tried their luck with this material. I wanted to discover it for my own and I wanted to see it through eyes nobody else before me had seen this place. So, I set off with JKR's Hogwarts castle and its inhabitants in mind. And today, after finishing with the Moon Sphere, I feel, like I am on a good way.

The Moon Sphere is how Dante enters into Paradise. It is the sphere for those who abandoned their vows. As such it still has the shadow of earthly life lying on it. Vows are a subject for itself in JK rowling's Harry Potter series. We have to deal with life debts and unbreakable vows. And they are all connected with the name of Professor Snape.

As he is the dungeon dweller in Hogwarts castle - and for my purpose, the dungeons of Hogwarts equate to the first sphere of Paradise - he would probably be the first choice picture-wise coming to mind. His watery potions would tie in nicely to the watery aspects of the moon too. At least we use his office and potion ingrediences in the pic.

However, more so womanhood and female magic - to create new things, to nourish and feel - connect with the moon. In most languages other than German the moon is female. The full moon here stands for the woman in the high of her power, as the mother and wife.

Tonks is the one woman who becomes pregnant in the series. In m picture her bubblegum pink hair falls like a curtain, covering the magic at work in her belly. The hair here works like the curtain behind the Popess on the second card of the old Marseille Tarot set that hides the female magic in the temple behind her.

Her round belly is also the moon. And the moon spots Dante discusses with Beatrice shape up to a phoenix as the child is the quintessence of the relation of two people in love: One becomes Two, Two becomes Three, and out of the Third comes the One as the Fourth.

And that leads us back to the (almost) broken vow. It is a marriage vow I had in mind. Remus Lupin gave it to Tonks. But his boggart, and therefore the thing he is most afraid of, is the full moon. Sure, you can say it is because he is a werewolf. He fears that his animal self takes control of him once a month.

But wasn't it also his animal self that was afraid of a close relationship with a woman? And wasn't it also his animale self that made him want to flee once he saw himself faced with the responsibility of a family? He was ready to abandon his vow immediately. And that made Tonks and Lupin perfect inhabitants for the Moon Sphere in Professor Snape's dungeon office.

So.. the end of Harry Potter. Seeing as it’s such a big book, I suppose it would do to address

So.. the end of Harry Potter. Seeing as it's such a big book, I suppose it would do to address it. I'm going to break it down simply, because I'm really not in the mood to write long eloquent paragraphs.

As I said, overall I was satisfied, but not really happy. Certain things nagged me—mostly things that, as an author, I think I might have done differently.

I knew one of the Weasleys was going to die. I told that to people two years ago. On my hit list were Mr. Weasley, ONE of the twins, and then Ron [and, although it would have been a stretch, Percy]. Turns out it was Fred. Kind of pissed me off, but, I was willing to accept it because the death of a Weasley would have a profound impact on the other characters, and I was hoping to see where that would lead. To my complete, utter, disappointment, I feel like the only person who Fred's death impacted was Mrs. Weasley, and furthermore George wasn't even around. I wanted to see what it would do to George. But even in the epilogue, I got nada. Pissed me off. Pissed me off.

On the flip side, Mrs. Weasley vs. Bellatrix = best scene/battle of the entire book [and among the best of the series]. Mrs. Weasley's one-liner killed me. Props to Rowling there, it was absolutely magnificent. I was glad to see that plump old housewife really was a kick-ass momma wizard as well.

Another thing Rowling did well was the Malfoys. I was very, very, impressed with how, in the end, Narcissa and Lucius were won by the love of their son and family, not the power of Voldemort. It was a fantastic addition to the theme that Rowling has been trying to reinforce throughout the series, that Voldemort's greatest weakness was love. Love brought him down: Lily, Narcissa, Harry's love for his friends, and ultimately Snape.

Speaking of Snape, his love for Lily came to me in an epiphany over the summer before the last book came out. [Jet lag is amazing]. I thought this plot line of the story was an excellent idea, especially because despite this truth Rowling still managed to make Snape look like the bad guy right up to the bitter end, particularly for those people who hadn't seen it coming. However, once again I was pissed at the way things unfolded, and Snape's death is only the tip of the ice burg. Actually, I didn't think Snape was going to die, and, quite frankly, I would have been more interested in letting him live and seeing what it would do to his relationship with Harry. Because if Snape had lived, there would have had to have been some sort of confrontation between them. But he died, and I can see why his death would have been necessary in order to find out the truth, because he's not the sort who would have given it up as long as he was alive. Still, the fact that there was no confrontation whatsoever between Snape and Harry in the end bothered me. Snape could have died saving Harry—something, anything, to provoke character relations. But nothing. That disturbed me, and it kind of made me feel like the whole ordeal was like “Oh yeah, by the way, Snape loves Lily and stuff...” and it didn't matter all that much. The only inkling we get as to how Harry really, really felt about it was in that he named his son after Snape. But I just don't know what that actually says. I mean, even coming out of Snape's memories, Harry didn't give any thought to the revelation of the Lily-Snape relationship, and even when he told Hermione and Ron about it, Rowling grazed over the conversation and didn't make much point about what Harry was thinking.

GAH.

Meanwhile, there's the whole Dumbledore thing. I was very, very impressed to see what she did with his character. In the end, even he was not the statue of perfection which everyone made him out to be and, in the end, even he had had his doubts and problems. This was a well done character.

There's the gay issue. I read the last book with Rowling's statement about his sexuality in mind, and for a while there I suspected that perhaps there would be some hints when more about his relationship with Grindelwald was uncovered. In the end, however, I saw nothing to suggest Dumbledore's gayness at all, which makes me feel like Rowling simply made the statement to be “all inclusive” or something. Whether that's true or not, I have no idea, but that's how it appears to me. Frankly there was no hint of Dumbledore's sexuality either way, and he seemed too wrapped up in his magic and defeating dear Voldy to really seem to give a damn about sex in the first place. So, yeah. Whatever.

Above everything, I felt that the most far-flung and ridiculous thing in the book was the death of Remus and Tonks. That I did not see coming, and in fact I thought it was so poorly brought in that I wasn't moved by it at all. I was more like, “WTF? Where did this come from?” If anything I felt that Rowling just killed them off to kill people off. She'd decided she needed more dead people, and more angst. I'm not saying that this truly was her incentive, but that's what it felt like. The thing that especially bothered me was that they were significant people in Harry's life, yet they received virtually nothing for it in their deaths. We never even learned how it happened, which I think is a disgrace to the characters. Even Crabbe got better than that. It was like Harry walked in and someone said, “Oh BTW Remus and Tonks died,” and Harry was like, “ORLY? That sucks.” I understand Harry couldn't deal with it at the time, but even later, they get nothing. It just seems like, as I said, she killed them off to kill more people, and draw out angst. I feel like the only reason they were her targets, too, is because they had the baby; it would not have been as angsty if not for the baby, and they would not have died if room for such angst did not exist.

I suppose the reality is that I'm just over the kids-lose-their-parents plot device for angst. There's Harry, loosing his parents and all other parental figures such as Sirius, Remus, and Dumbledore; little Ted; and even Neville to an extent, as his parents are basically out of commission; Dumbledore lost his parents one way or another; and obviously Tom Riddle. Perhaps I wouldn't feel like this was “careless killing” if they'd been given a little more attention, but in the end that's how it seemed to me.

Furthermore, I felt like Remus was an important character for Harry, particularly after the death of Sirius. In fact, he was important for the story, because he remained the only real connection to the Marauders left. If it had been me, I would have felt it important that at least one of that group remain alive in order to keep past memories alive. There are things that Hagrid, Dumbledore, the Weasleys, and whatever other professor that had known them, can never tell Harry or anyone else because they just didn't know. I feel like killing Remus is as bad as killing both the Weasley twins would have been, although in some ways worse too. George is the connection to Fred that remains, and honestly even if they had both died, they were close to their family enough for there to be more good memories than can be said [probably] of the Marauders.

I said before that I really felt the whole thing was quite rushed. Like in the end everything sped up and we didn't get any time saying goodbye to anyone but Harry. I'm not just talking about the people who died, but the people who lived as well. We found out what happened to some of the characters, like Neville, but others? Luna? AND GEORGE? [That made me angriest, not to know about him].

I suppose it shows a difference in where Rowling's mind is versus where the minds of the readers are. In the end, Rowling really was writing a story about Harry Potter, not his friends or the people he knew. So I have to give her some grace here. And perhaps she didn't mean for it to seem this way, but ultimately I think my criticisms of the story stem from the difference in attitude I take towards my characters and stories. Reading this last book made me realize I would never dream of naming a story after only one of my characters, and least not in such a way that it was only to represent one of them. For instance, the story The Loonibin--“Loonibin” is the name of a family within that universe, two of whose members are very prominent characters within the main plot. But the title isn't named for their family name; it's the name of the ship they've inherited; and, in talking about the ship, it's meant to feature all those characters who become a “family” upon it.

I can't simply focus a story on one character alone; and even those characters who are not the most prominent have to have some sort of honor or tribute paid to their existence in a way that I feel Rowling didn't give to her extra characters. I felt like so many of them didn't get endings. Sure, she gave fans images of the kind of people they would be, but I feel like she didn't do them justice—at least not in the way I think of it. To me it was like, “They battled. Time skip. Harry, Ron, and Hermione have kids. Some other people are still alive. The end.” BLAH.

All in all I guess you could say I would have done things differently, even if they all had to end up the same way. But it's Rowling's vision, and in the end I did like it, despite everything.

Challenge: Bank
Character(s): Young Remus Lupin and Fenrir Greyback
A/N: I guess I was in a sinister sort of mood on America's birthday because this is pretty dark... you have been warned.

The silver moon illuminated the river bank as yellow eyes took in their surroundings. The creature crawled up the hill into the yard of the quiet home. He began to drool as he anticipated his victim; he would enjoy young blood tonight. He let forth a piercing howl and dove through child-like baby blue curtains. Empowered by the fanatical terror in the five-year-old face, he sank his teeth into the tiny body just as the bedroom door was thrown open. He held eye contact with a horror-stricken father as his message was effectively communicated: Fenrir Greyback will not be affronted.

Here are some pictures from the San Francisco trip to Yaoi Con! I never post pics, so live it up, yo.

Firstly, a neutral Golden Gate Bridge shot:

It was getting towards sunset and actually as we left the sun was just setting and it was freeeeezing. We decided to take some emo shots:

And then some happy shots! And couples' shots <3:

And then I decided to be a pimp. Snape be gettin' all the girls, yo:

Now, for the dorky stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here's a quick shot of our wands, looking inconspicuous on the desk at our hotel room:

And our School Robes:

The super-dorky stuff, staring Adriann Palmer as Remus J Lupin!:

Tiara Rea as Severus Snape:

And Deana Medina as Sirius Black:

Here's how the story (as we see it) unfolds. Remus loves Severus. Severus tolerates Remus and sometimes hearts him and helps him tie his hair with twine to keep it out of his face:

Okay, actually Severus would like nothing more than to love Remus:

Too bad Sirius is jealous (he hearts Remus too!). This is how Snape feels about Sirius' jealousy:

Sirius confronts Severus. They duel:

Snape wins!

And Snape smiles happily (yes, my Snape can smile):

teehee. And now for some extra miscellaneous pics. Enjoy!

Ginny Weasley: Un caballo.

Arthur Weasley: Una comadreja.

Kingsley Shacklebolt: Un lince. Animal bastante perspicaz y ágil.

Dolores Jane Umbridge: Un gato.

Seamus Finnigan: Un zorro.

Ernie Macmillan: Un cerdo. (En la traducción puede variar)

Severus Snape: Una cierva, en representación de Lily Potter.

Minerva McGonagall: Tres gatos, identicos a ella misma transformada.

Abeforth Dumbledore: Una cabra.
