This morning's reading was suggested to me as I thought through yesterday's reading in 2 Corinthians 10.4 about demolishing strongholds. As I said there, Paul is clear that only spiritual weapons can bring down strongholds whether those strongholds are in the world, the church ... or in my own heart and mind. And here, in Ephesians 6, I see what those weapons are.

The first is "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God", and that is often taken to mean nothing more than the quotation of Bible verses at the unseen enemy. The justification for reading Ephesians 6.17 in that way is that Jesus quoted Bible verses at the devil during his time of temptation in the wilderness. "The tempter came to him and said, 'If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.' Jesus answered, 'It is written: "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God"' ... " (Matthew 4.1-11). Surely that must be what it means to use this particular spiritual weapon?

Well, yes, it might be ... or it might include that. But to my mind, if all I am seeing in the encounter between Jesus and the devil in Matthew 4 is Jesus quoting Bible verses, I think I am rather missing the point. As I understand it, the sword in Ephesians 6.17 is not my sword at all; it is quite specifically described as the sword of the Spirit. It is the sword that the Holy Spirit wields from within me. I can "take" it — indeed Paul says I must take it — but another — the Holy Spirit — will, as it were, direct its operation ... govern the cut and thrust and direction and timing of its use. It is his sword, not mine. That was surely so in the wilderness when Jesus took up this sword against the devil. At his baptism, Jesus had seen "the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him" (Matthew 3.16) and immediately afterwards Jesus had been "led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil" (Matthew 4.1). Luke tells us he was "full of the Holy Spirit" (Luke 4.1); and what I am seeing in the conflict with the devil is the Holy Spirit wielding his sword as Jesus takes it up and faces the enemy.

And the Spirit's sword is not merely Bible verses, it is the "word" of God. Now the word of God (as that expression is used in this verse) includes the Scriptures but is more than the Scriptures; and where it is the Scriptures it is not just any Scriptures. "Word" here is not logos but rema; and rema has a special use in Scripture. It denotes a definitive divine utterance ... a specific word given in a specific situation to accomplish a specific purpose; and that is really important.

What this all means is that, as I recognise a stronghold of the devil in my life or elsewhere and agree to its demolition, my first need is to be filled with the Spirit because I need him to wield his sword as I take it up. I need him to speak that precise, specific word with all the authority of God behind it that will make the walls come tumbling down. Whether that rema takes the form of a verse of Scripture or a prophetic word, it will do what nothing else can do. Small wonder then that Ephesians 6.17 with its injunction to take up the sword of the Spirit is preceded by the injunction in Ephesians 5.18 to "be filled with the Spirit". The two go together.
And how am I filled with the Spirit? As I pray in the Spirit. Is "prayer in the Spirit" part of the armour that Paul is describing? It is not clear whether or not the armour ends with the sword in Ephesians 6.17. But the "pray in the Spirit" of Ephesians 6.18 is certainly the activity that must accompany all the "putting on" and "taking" of the earlier verses. It is, indeed, what enables all that putting on and taking up to take place.

And what is prayer in the Spirit? Prayer in the Spirit is, as I understand it, the kind of prayer where we yield to the Spirit within us and let him do the praying. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness," says Paul. "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express" (Romans 8.26). If I have the gift of tongues, I must use it, for it is a great means of praying in the Spirit; but I can pray in the Spirit without the use of tongues. It is all a matter of letting go and letting God. It is God's power alone that can demolish strongholds.

 

COMUNICADO DE LA RED MEXICANA DE AFECTADOS POR LA MINERÍA

A LA OPINION PÚBLICA:

Reunidos en el Primer Encuentro de la Red Mexicana de Afectados por la Minería, en el poblado de Temacapulín, municipio de Cañadas de Obregón, Jalisco, los días 19, 20 y 21 de junio queremos manifestar nuestra preocupación por una serie de acciones de hostigamiento y represión contra los esfuerzos organizativos de defensa de nuestras comunidades en diversos estados de la república, que configuran un patrón de violación a los derechos humanos resultado directo de las actividades mineras.

Región Sur: GUERRERO.

Denunciamos el hostigamiento y engaño de que han sido objeto los opositores a los trabajos de explotación en el Ejido Real de Limón & Nuevo Balsas, Municipio de Cocula, Gro., realizadas por la Minera Media Luna, subsidiaria de la corporación canadiense Teck Cominco; así como las amenazas de muerte a su representante Evelia Bahena García y a su asesor jurídico, Francisco Jaimes.

Región Sureste: OAXACA.

Denunciamos la actitud de prepotencia y alevosía de la Dirección General de Minas de la Secretaría de Economía, que sin mediar consulta alguna a los comuneros del municipio de San Juan Tepeuxila, distrito de Cuicatlán, Oaxaca, subasta al mejor postor una extensión de 3500 hectáreas de terreno comunal, violando el Convenio 169 de la OIT que consagra los derechos de los pueblos originarios de América, ocultando además, la información acerca de los trabajos de prospección minera que realiza la empresa canadiense: Almaden Minerals LTD en la región de la Cañada Oaxaqueña.

Región Norte: CHIHUAHUA.

Nos mantenemos alerta de la respuesta que la Minera Dolores, subsidiaria de la trasnacional canadiense Minefinders, dé a la justa demanda que los pobladores del Ejido Huizopa, del Municipio de Madera, Chihuahua, ha hecho frente a la arbitraria propuesta de desalojarlos de su pueblo y continuar con una incontable explotación de los recursos del subsuelo.

Región Occidente: JALISCO-COLIMA.

Manifestamos nuestra sincera preocupación por el asedio que desde el 12 de diciembre de 2007, diversas corporaciones policíacas del gobierno del estado de Colima, que encabeza Silverio Cavazos Ceballos (PRI), realizan a los poblados náhuas El Platanar, en el Ejido Plan de Méndez, y Las Pesadas, en el Ejido Ayotitlán, ambos del municipio de Cuautitlán de García Barragán, Jalisco, donde están asentadas las minas a cielo abierto Peña Colorada y Minera del Norte (MINOSA), subsidiarias de la corporación italo-argentina Ternium Hylsa, generándose el conflicto de límites territoriales más antiguo del país, entre los estados de Jalisco y Colima, que ha pasado por los poderes ejecutivo y judicial y actualmente se ventila en el Senado de la República (Poder Legislativo), y ya dura 88 años. El litigio comenzó con la matanza de Timbillos (1920), en que 13 indígenas de Ayotitlán y Telcruz fueron asesinados y sus cadáveres colgados durante días en unas higueras por la familia colimense Arias de El Mamey (hoy Minatitlán). El conflicto minero y territorial se ha extendido gracias al desinterés y la complicidad de las autoridades jaliscienses, y a la ambición de las colimenses, al grado que en septiembre de 1995 la CNDH emitió la Recomendación 122/95 señalando la corresponsabilidad de las autoridades estatales y federales en graves violaciones a los derechos humanos de los nahuas de Ayotitlán, Jalisco, gracias a los que fue decretada en marzo de 1987 la Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra de Manantlán, con 139 mil hectáreas (en 5 Municipios de Jalisco y 2 de Colima). Se trata de más de 406 kilómetros cuadrados que ambos Estados se disputan violenta y legalmente en los Municipios de Zapotitlán de Vadillo, Cuautitlán (la zona minera más extensa en territorio indígena) y Cihuatlán (en la desembocadura del Río Marabasco al Océano Pacífico). Exigimos la salida de las corporaciones policíacas colimenses de ambos poblados, y la cancelación de los procedimientos judiciales penales fabricados desde Colima contra la indígena Candelaria Zambrano Mora y el ejidatario Antonio Serratos Puga –Plan de Méndez-, para abrir nuevas minas junto al Río Marabasco, límite natural de ambos Estados, cuyas familias están actualmente refugiados en la cabecera municipal de Cuautitlán, para que la población ancestral pueda ejercer su vida normal, trabajar y transitar libremente por el territorio nacional.

Así mismo, manifestamos nuestra consternación por el brutal asesinato del escritor michoacano Francisco Chamery Méndez, autor del libro: Toño Latas. El Poder del Dinero y el Poder Minero sin Límites de Colima y Jalisco (Ed. Lugachamery, Colima, octubre de 2007), quien por sus valientes denuncias difundidas en dicha novela, fue secuestrado en la ciudad de Colima al término de la presentación de su libro. Su cadáver fue localizado en diciembre pasado en Mazamitla, Jalisco, y su vehículo en Veracruz en enero de este año. 

Ante esta situación así como por toda la serie de impactos ambientales, sociales y económicos negativos que la minería provoca en nuestras comunidades, hemos decidido conformar la Red Mexicana de Afectados por la Minería (REMA) a la luz de los principios y objetivos que se plasman en la “Declaración de Temacapulín” que anexamos a este comunicado y está a disposición en nuestra página web.

Først en kort oppsummering av saken: FNs klimapanel og summen av samlet relevant forskning har påvist to komplekse sammenhenger: 1) Det er et sammenfall mellom mengde CO2 i atmosfæren og temperaturen på jorda. 2) Mengden CO2 i atmosfæren er økende – etter all sannsynlighet som følge av menneskelig aktivitet. Av dette følger mange scenarier, og her er ulike forskningsgrener- og miljøer uenige om konsekvenser, utfall og grad av tiltak. En ting ser likevel ut til å være sentralt: mindre CO2-utslipp kan vise seg å være nødvendig for artenes evne til å overleve på jorda (herunder også menneskeheten).

So, whats the problem? Penger, grådighet og ønske om makt. Vi lever i ett samfunn så perfeksjonert at det eneste som kan føre befolkningen til randen av revolusjon er bensinprisøkning på noen kroner literen. Dette som følge av en politisk agitasjonskampanje som har til hensikt å få folk til å føle sin frihet truet av staten og dens medløpere (venstrevridde journalister, miljøvernere, innvandringsliberale osv.) Tar man to kroner mer for bensinen raserer man fullstendig økonomien til gjennomsnittsnordmannen som dermed ikke har råd til sine to årlige golfturer til Spania. 

Vi er alle ofre. Hovedregien i denne offerrollestrategien har Siv Jensen og FrP. Hun vet godt at folk holder kjeft så lenge de er kjøttmette og sangrialykkelige. Derfor fortsetter FrP å lete etter enkle metoder for å vende individet mot folket, selvet mot felleskapet og lommeboka mot fornuften. Ett grep er å fremstille klimadebatten som et desperat grep konstruert av staten (og de tidligere nevnte venstrevridde medhjelperne) som et middel i det ultimate mål: Å begrense individets frihet ved å stjele skattepenger og å tjene seg søkkrike på nordmenns undefundige trang til å bosette seg "der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bu" (hvor man som kjent er avhengig av bil med billig bensin).

Dette klinger selvsagt som musikk i ørene hos grådighetskulturens øverste fyrster. Øystein Stray Spetalen vil mer enn gjerne legge til rette for seg selv, og han kjenner mange andre som også ønsker seg selv best. 

Sitat VG-nett: I en kjedebrevlignende e-postaksjon ber investor Øystein Stray Spetalen sine rike venner videresende et foredrag hvor det fastslås at for høye CO2-utslipp ikke er farlig for klimaet.

Dette er mildt sagt betryggende å høre. Foredraget har hann fått fra sin barndomsvenn Fridtjof Bettum, sønn av skipsreder Bjørn Bettum , blant annet kjent for sitt gråsoneforhold til den såkalte skjulte "Jahre-formuen". Penger. Penger. Penger. Spetalens venner innbefatter samfunnsrefseren og kirketaleren Rimi-Hagen, samfunnsstøtten Rema-Robert og Høydehopperen(!) Steinar Hoen. Da skulle argumentasjonen være godt forankret!

Bellona, Frederic Hauge, Ole Mathismoen, et samlet relevant forskningsmiljø, alle "venstrevridde" journalister, miljøbevegelse, bekymrede småbarnsforeldre, isbjørner på svalbard og det som er igjen av Jostedalsbreen -beklager, men kapitalen har talt. Den vil ha mer av det gode og mindre av det plagsomme. Så hold kjeft!
