So by using the rewrite module found in the Apache HTTP server and creating a .htaccess file inside our main directory we can accomplish the friendly URLs task. Excited? I know I was the first time. Start right away!

There are really two scenarios to deal with here: the release notes for the current release either are already in the NEWS file, or they are not. They are already there when you rebuild the distribution for a release, for example when you've found something wrong with it and fixed that. For a human, this is pretty simple to detect, but how does an Ant script know?

Enter the Ant filter chain. This construct resembles a Unix pipe in that you can use it to feed output of one as input to the other. Here's how I retrieve the version that is currently in the NEWS file:

The loadfile task loads the srcFile into the current.version property. But not just as is, no there is a filterchain applied first. The first item in the chain is headfilter, which works just like the Unix head command: in this case it gives the first line of the NEWS file. I don't want a line, but a string, so next I remove the line ending with the striplinebreaks filter.

Then it's time for some good old regular expression to extract the version number from the string. The first line of the NEWS file looks like this: Changes in 1.4.0. So I match the text with [a-zA-Z\s]* and then the actual version number with ([1-9]+\.[0-9]+).*.

Note that I use a group to capture only the major and minor version (1.4 in the previous example). The reason for that is that whenever we deliver patch releases, we don't add a whole new section to the NEWS file, but just expand the current section with the few cases that were fixed by the patch. Since we sort the cases in descending order of reporting, the patch cases will always be at the top.

Following the regular expression there is a replacestring filter that inserts backslashes before points. The reason for that becomes clear when we look at how the Ant script actually uses the current.version property:

The code before that is just a convoluted way to escape points in the previous version number. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any Ant task that can execute a regular expression against a property, so I first put the property into a temporary file and then operate on that file.

Finally, all that is left, is to add the release notes for the current version to the NEWS file:

The only tricky part here is that the concat task doesn't allow one of its input files to also be the output file. So I have to introduce a temporary file. Then when all is done, the file containing the NEWS section for this release, release.news.file, is no longer needed.

The validate_field() function takes two parameters, a $value and a $field. In our case the $field parameter will contain everything we provided when we created our form object. We set up a few local variables $options, $type and $name, which are all found in the $field parameter. Then we see if we can find any 'required' key in the options array, and if it is true. If it is set and true we go another step in. We see if the length of the value is equals with 0 and that we don't have a 'exist' key OR that the value equals 0 and the type of the field is 'checkbox'. If any of these two are valid, the specific field is required and we will echo that out as an error. The reason we do these test is:

• In the first expression the exist key is only available for blobs. If a blob already exist in the database we don't want to supply it every time we edit the field. The 'exist' key is set when we have a value in the database and don't want to remove that.
• The second expression is used when we have checkboxes. Remember the JavaScript function calculating all the checkboxes checked with a specific name? The return from that function is the value in this case. If none of the checkboxes is checked and the field is required, we will echo the error.

After the 'required' key check we take a look at the 'format' key and make sure that it exists, we also make sure we haven't already printed any error and that the length of the field is not equal to 0. If the boolean turns into true we are stepping into the validate_value() function. If we have found any error we will return the error list and echo that one out. Otherwise we will return false.

Next up is validate_value(). This function takes three parameters, $value, $options and $name. We assign some local variables with the value from the parameters. Depending on the format of the field we use a switch/case loop to validate the content of the field. For example a 'number' can only match 0-9 chars. When we find our matching format we are using the check_value() function. The only case diverting from this is the 'file' case. Here we have a few extra checks which is available for the file input field. We are able to set a upload folder, allowed extensions, max size to name them.

The last function, check_value() is simple. It takes 6 parameters: $value, $regexp, $name, $min, $max and $type. What we do here is to match our string with the incoming regexp. If the format isn't valid we will mark that. If a min or max key is supplied we check those validation rules to. Finally we will return the whole error string, if any errors where found.
