This last week I've been working out of home, so, I haven't listened too much music (only a pair of songs on my mp3), but, when I've arrived home, I've searched 4 new sounds and I've downloaded an amazing downtempo reference by Koan 4 the russian netlabel Sun Station. I've found this ethno lounge really amazing, I promise I will listen their other references. Enjoy it.

Sometimes even the most exciting new developments and information come from unexpected places. Perhaps these unexpected places are where deliberate action fails (perhaps due to emotion, or other totally human aspects). To restate some previously mentioned ideas briefly, the individual cannot ever have total control; but, the modern premises still remain (conscious improvement). Furthermore, deliberation is necessary, but ultimately imperfectly sustainable; therefore, it must consistently be altered by these exceptions (as in new developments and information realized from the unexpected places), with complete loss of dignity. No pride should hold back the acceptance of a failure in the face of deliberation. Experiencing a period of subtle failure during a period of personal deliberation unveils knowledge of the self. There is a lot wrapped up in this. Transcendence, nature, technology, systems and what it means to be human.

Ultimately, a necessary loss of dignity leads to a growing and confident self knowledge. How can one's self knowledge grow and become confident? I think perhaps through the various arts (liminality), but not crafts . By writing down things, or creating symbols which will carry this self knowledge into lifelong modifications of the self to increase overall utility. Though these symbols ultimately mean nothing, it's the agitation that is caused by them that creates modernized progress (that and actual work, the place where all wealth comes from). Hence, though vegetarianism is not "sustainable", it may lead to sustainability as a result of the nature of an individual humans relationships with symbols. Moreover, people will never agree on any single symbol (or solution or understanding), and they argue about them constantly everyday. There are holes to be filled though, symbols that just need to be re-engineered with other symbols in mind, and sometimes there is a resistance to this--sometimes inciting violence. Regardless, again the loss of control is only displaced, and each individual has the choice (and in my opinion the responsibility) to figure out where it's displaced. In a personal case, I think silence (and ambiguity) is golden when it comes to (symbolic) idealisms that come from self knowing.

I am not opposed to metaphor here. Rather, I am saying that one must pick one's root metaphors carefully, for appropriateness and potential fruitfulness...

Metaphor is, at it's simplest, a way of proceeding from the known to the unknown. [This corresponds, curiously, with the Ndembu definition of a symbol in ritual.] It is a way of cognition in which the identifying qualities of one thing are transferred in an instantaneous, almost unconscious, flash of insight to some other thing that is, by remoteness or complexity, unknown to us. The test of essential metaphor, Phillip Wheelwright has written, is not an rule of gramattical form, but rather the quality of semantic transformation that is brought about.

A common problem for me is making generalizations (in a matter of speaking--I sometimes refer to this as projected identity, and other times refer to it as the age of anxiety). I often need to be reminded or made consistently aware of this problem. I often write on my skin for this purpose. A better understanding of the self may lead to a better contentment with the world, this is no excuse for complacency--but it's hard to say what the action of complacency really looks like. It's important for me not to be agitated and approach problems where I look complacent--even though I am most definitely concerned and confident in my actions and individual opinions. This is just one example of self knowledge.

Now I read, listen, watch, exchange, excercise, think. Now I consume. The experimental film is finished and in processing. What happens now is working with what we have in post. A perceived haitus of deliberation has now begun to slow. From the surface the solid calm of an enclosed rising water may worry some--those who know what must be growing beneath it. It is intuitively foreboding. And the globe is warming.

Is this an "online source"?

Summers are slow around these parts, and I will often go days without a single reference question. And then there are days like yesterday that come out of nowhere and totally surprise me: I had a line at my desk! Two eager information seekers were from a local high school, here to complete a summer research assignment for a fancy-pants science program they're starting in the fall. There was a problem, I thought, with the assignment itself.

The students came to my desk and handed me a citation, asking if we had the journal in question. I kicked off my standard catalog-search rigamarole: Showing them where to access the catalog from our website, walking them through a JOURNAL TITLE, EXACT search, explaining how to read the holdings information to find out if we had the article they were looking for. Turned out we did, online, via Ebsco's Academic Search Premiere and I hit 'print' with my standard theatrical flourish: Voila! No, no, no! they said, shaking their heads in despair. Finding the text wasn't the problem. They'd already found the full-text of the article at another library. The problem was fulfilling the terms of the assignment. Each student was asked to choose a topic and then assemble a set of ten articles on the topic prior to the first day of class. In what I presume was an attempt to head off a folder filled with the first ten hits from a Google search, the assignment contained the injunction that only three of the articles could be "from online sources." So the students were under the impression that they needed to get articles from print journals only, despite the fact that the article we were holding was by all accounts exactly what the teacher was likely to be looking for: From a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, an example of recent scholarship, and relevant to the student's topic. As I started to explain what I thought the teacher was trying to get at--the distinction between web sources and scholarly sources--a faculty member joined our conversation. Maybe I should hear this? she said.

So my question: We are aggressively shifting our print journals to digital just as soon as we can, like most everybody else. The standard rule faculty use to make sure students use library resources--"only three online sources"--is confusing and in conflict with the rapid digitization of scholarly materials, especially in the sciences. Any strategies for explaining this to students, to faculty, to ourselves?

Between being slammed with summer work, and partying like a rock star when my day ends I've been extremely busy as of late. However, not so busy that I didn't notice the man who wore a johnny coat into the library yesterday... He had pants on, but was wearing a johnny coat... And browsing the periodical collection. The funny thing is, it didn't even phase me, I was like... Oh yeah, a guy wearing a johnny coat.

Oh! The Fisher King... Or Aqualung if you prefer, or Stuck-Out-Of-Time Man is back. He limped on by the Reference Desk today. He is always an unbelievable sight to behold. Truly our most show stopping freak with his bandanna, long torn leather coat, walking staff, and the gimp leg that he drags laboriously behind him. The first time I saw him I really though that he was just hit by a car outside the Library but somehow managed to haul what was left of his sorry carcass into the building for help.

... Then I realized that he was just another Irregular.

Oris Watches - A Review Of The BC3

Oris watches are very affordable, beautiful Swiss watches. They feature mechanical movements - some with automatic winding - with a trademark red rotating red rotor. The range of Big Crown watches is a particular favorite of mine and, while I was initially drawn to the Big Crown with Pointer Date collection, I've now shifted to the more modern styling of the BC3 collection.

I had my heart set on the Big Crown with Pointer Date. I wanted a large watch with a black face and black leather strap and this Oris watch seemed to fit the bill, in terms of price and design. There is a choice of case size but, to my mind, the large crown is best complemented by a large case. I liked the largest case in the collection - 40mm model reference. Oris is well known for its pointer date watches and I really liked the red-tipped horseshoe shaped pointer. I loved the simple Arabic numerals at each hour mark and the day numbers on the outer rim.

However, there is one feature I don't like, and that is the hour and minute arms. They seem slightly too ornate. By this I mean, the minute hand has straight sides that taper out slightly before forming a wedge at the top; this wedge is then topped with a slim needle-like pointer. The hour hand is smaller and features straight, slightly outwardly tapered sides that then change into an oval shape that is topped with another needle-like pointer. The overall look of the watch is very nice but I just would prefer simpler hands.

This brings me to the Oris BC3 - the 3 stands for third generation of pilot's watches. This collection is unequivocally modern in design. There are currently two models in the collection; each comes with a matt stainless steel casing, black dial and either a black rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet. Both models come with a day aperture at the 12 o'clock position and a date aperture at the 6 o'clock position.

There are two sizes of case; 40 or 42mm. The shape of the casing is the same for both, with a slightly raised though flat bezel - the Pointer Date watch comes with a fluted bezel. I really like the simpler lines of the case and bezel of the BC3. The simplicity of design is carried through on to the dial. Both the hour and minute arms are the same in design - with the hour being shorter. They are simple straight, thickish and end in 'long' wedges.

The design of the dial differs slightly on the two models. While both have Arabic numerals at each hour, one watch has a small luminescent dot above the numeral (with two above the 12), whereas the other, features dashes (rectangles) above the numerals with two appearing above the 12. My preference is for the dashes, as they better complement the straight, plain arms and general smooth-edge design of the watch.

If you're a lover of big crown, big watches then the big crown collections of Oris watches will certainly appeal. The Big Crown with Pointer Date will be for those who like a more traditionally style of watch but for those like me who want a more contemporary looking watch the Oris BC3 will be the first choice.

The Phrase Finder is an useful site you can use to find "the meanings and origins of over 1,200 English sayings, phrases and idioms," according to its web site. There are detailed explanations providing the origins of all sorts of sayings. There is a search function of course, but there's also a Phrase of the Week newsletter to which you can subscribe. Some recent posts include Donkey's years, Toodle-oo, Think outside the box, With bells on, Chop-chop and Silver bullet.

Sources used for the research include primary sources such as newspapers, books, etc., and "trusted references" such as The Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition and The Historial Dictionary of American Slang, First Edition, according to the web site.

Saturday night and Sunday morning I listened to several motivational speakers during a leadership conference for members of the Best Buddies cooperative. They all had similar things to say, sometimes conflicting in subtle nit-picky ways. Overall though, they mostly said the following three things: use your time wisely, spread your usefulness, and be an everyday champion. Later Monica and I were talking about the speakers, and commented on the flawed motivational speaker logic. Of course all of them have other things they like to do, and hobbies, etc. But ultimately the better a motivational speaker become, all you're convincing the crowd to do is become a motivational speaker. This is of course supposing you follow the guidelines that a motivational speaker should use emotional stories, interpretations of words, and advice from their own lives.

Where is your place to listen and then give advice to someone. Surely not everywhere. It's obvious that performance only allows one to give and receive advice from certain people and have it be ok the next day. Family is a group of people that you're allowed to participate in this exchange with. Friends are also one, but the individual exchanges run through a litany of social variables before the conversation processes. Anyway, sometimes rules are broken that must be from many years of experience. That happened, and continues to happen, with my parents. I am not that surprised with the world, just interested in it. The thing that surprises me is people, usually they perpetuate more of the same (which isn't necessarily bad--unless it is), and they surprise me because it dosen't happen as often as I might find intutive to expect. The Dark Knight was fantastic by the way, they cleverly inserted a cheesy example of the preceeding--which I won't spoil).

Today is Wednesday the 23rd, and the movie's filming has completed. The final stages now begin. The filming went well, and I think I learned from my mistakes the first time around. I ended up with a Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina Orientalis) named Q (queue, cue, que, kuu, etc). We used Q as an actor, because we had some trouble finding one on our own. I haven't had a pet since Jack (Charcoal) who died on Halloween of my sophomore year I belive. That was a bad year.

Or a Big Ugly Dish. While the majority of viewers of satellite tv are quite content with their 60cm minidish, a few brave souls acknowledge that size does indeed matter, particularly in the search for more exotic fare. In that regards, the C-Band TV Installation Basics webpage is an excellent introduction to what is involved in setting up a large dish. While the emphasis is on C-band reception, much of the information provided is also applicable to Ku-band reception. One for the bookmarks.

or "childfree by choice" is a better way to say it. the former seems rather -- dogmatic.

i had a patron come by the reference desk last evening looking for a picture book that explains why some adults choose to not have kids. The key here is that the adults make a conscientious choice to not have children -- it's not that they aren't able to have children (e.g., due to infertility, high risks, etc.).

i looked in worldcat, on amazon, etc. and i came up with nothing. i found books for adults -- sorta like those "high fiving" each other for not having kids -- but nothing explaining it to children....it was amazing what i *did* find (e.g., books explaining why mommy is getting plastic surgery.)

so, my point is-- there's an untapped niche (as small as it is) out there for a money making opportunity in the children's book arena. for those of you who wish to take on the task of writing and/or illustrating a book that focuses on explaining "childfree by choice" to kids, the market is wide open.

A theory about people

I do have to agree with Leelo(o) and her theory about onions being more intriguing to peel than potatoes. Still, sometimes even if it is an onion, at one point you may discover that every new layer is as bitter as the previous one. So after you figure that out, why bother? I know, people have shells, and they might be different inside. But shells also speak, they may tell what's important to that particular person, what they like about themselves... and sometimes people are (and stay) on different opinions....

I like people who are like a wok dish. A piece from this and that. There might be little sense how this all goes together, but it still tastes so great, you just can't get enough. And then you would discover, there might be a fine logic to all that. You get a hint about the recipe, you smile having guessed a few of the many ingredients, yet you have to confess - there must be something more added. I have the honour of knowing a few people like that.

Btw, I don't know how this turned into a food-talk. I hate those. Food's for eating, solely in the purpose to survive. It maybe enjoyable, but playing around with it like that - that's just not done in my opinion. Look where being obsessed with food has taken Americans to!

I recently shared the with my department about the TexShare databases that are available for free searching through local public libraries or online from anywhere using a user name and password obtained from local public libraries. The above video posted on YouTube is a good introductory marketing tool for the service. Periodic unsolicited information sent to patrons from library resources highlights and reinforces the value of library and/or information services.
