Expecting most people to completely overhaul their lives or spend a great deal of time and/or money just isn't realistic. I truly believe that even a small bit of education, awareness, and action is better than nothing, so I'll try to do my part on this little blog in my tiny corner of the worldwide web. If I help a few people make a few small changes, that's great!

Setelah penuh dengan keringat, darah, dan air mata.. akhirnya kejadian juga. Sebenarnya terlalu banyak yang ingin saya curahkan. Keluh kesah, benci, kesal, protes, dendam, dan naluri ingin membunuh juga ada (ya!). Tapi pada akhirnya saya putuskan, ya sudahlah. Buat apa lagi saya membahas hal-hal jelek yang saya alami. Yang penting acaranya sudah berjalan. Dan (cukup) lancar. Terimakasih kepada semua pihak yang sudah memberi kerjasama untuk menyukseskan acara ini. Kepada pihak2 yang sudah hampir memecahkan urat nadi saya, mudah2an kita tidak bertemu lagi. Pait, pait..

Dua hal yang saya sesalkan dari acara ini.

Yang pertama, saya nggak poto sama dia. Hiks, hiks. Bukan siapa2, cuma salah seorang dari sekian banyak orang yang saya sayang. Alasannya? Klise. Saya takut dia marah lagi. Yang kemarin sudah cukup bagi saya. Dibenci orang yang kita sayang. It's hurt, you know. Maka saya pun sukses jadi pecundang malam ini. Biar deh. Orang tau apa sih?

Yang kedua, duit saya habis. Dan saya maksud adalah benar-benar HABIS! Parahh. Selesai acara, saya (lagi2) terpaksa mengisi credit MAXIS saya. Keenam kalinya, selama program ini. Yang berarti RM60 untuk 3 hari 4 malam. Belum lagi uang kereta sapu yang -tanpa dibahas pun semua orang sudah tau bahwa pengeluaran terbesar saya dari situ!- Dikira saya boker duit apa? Saya bahkan gak sempat makan di acara itu! (kecuali nyicip2 dikit dari ka nofal). Nyesekkin. Tapi mau marah dengan siapa? Saya juga gak tau.

Tiba2 pada pagi hari di tanggal 24, hp saya berdering (belakangan ini saya memang selalu jadi operator pagi). SHIT. can't I just take a rest for a minute?! Ternyata bang shafian. Ngabarin tentang keberangkatan kami ke KL yang dijadwalkan pada tanggal 25. Saya tertegun.

Pergi ke KL, adalah hal yang sangat saya impikan. Bukan, bukan pergi ke KL nya. Bukan gratisnya. Tapi program nya. CAP. Camp Ambassador Peace (kalau saya tidak salah). Program tingkat Internasional yang sangaaaaaaaaaatt oke. Saya sudah ngarep ikutan CAP dari sem lalu. Dan sekarang kesempatan itu datang! Sangat dekat dengan saya. Bahwa acara itu diadakan di KL dan kami mendapat sponsor dari bendahari UUM, itu merupakan nilai tambah yang menyenangkan. Tapi bukan itu intinya. Kesempatan untuk bertemu dengan orang2 dari berbagai penjuru di Malaysia, menjalani training dan berbagi pengalaman. Itu yang saya cari.

Makanya jujur saya bilang, saya sangat ingin ikut. Sampai detik2 terakhir pun, saya masih keukeuh ingin pergi. Tapi ketika Bang Shafian menelpon dan mengingatkan tentang keberangkatan, tiba2 saya jadi ragu.

Ada 4 hal yang meragukan saya untuk pergi.

Yang pertama, saya terlibat program Karnival Kebudayaan dan Kesenian (3K) dibawah Broadcasting Club. Kebetulan program ini tanggal mainnya sama dengan program ke KL, 25-27 Juli. Harusnya sih tidak ada masalah, toh saya hanya menjabat sebagai bendahari. Tugas saya sudah saya selesaikan kemarin2, ketika saya menyampaikan resit2 belanja ke Hal Ehwal Pelajar (HEP) untuk claim. That's it. Selanjutnya tugas saya akan bersambung ketika program sudah selesai.

Itu yang seharusnya. Tapi pada kenyataannya, saya -entah bagaimana- jadi ikut2an ngurusin konsumsi. Tepatnya, saya yang ngurusin konsumsi! Saya yang order, saya yang ambil resit, saya yang konfirmasi, saya yang cuci piring (hem, dikira saya pembantu apa). Ringkasnya, tiba2 saya yang in charge masalah ini. Makanya saya takut, kalau saya pergi, orang2 akan kelabakan. Nasib semua orang bergantung kepada saya. Kalau saya pergi, ribuan orang terancam kelaparan!

Yang kedua, saya ada janji dengan Seong, Malaysian chinese yang satu project di Recycle. Bukan, bukan date sambil ngumpulin sampah. Beberapa hari yang lalu kami menginterview orang2 untuk ketua dan wakil ketua tiap2 biro. Setelah ini kami masih harus mengadakan satu interview lagi, untuk menarik AJK (Ahli Jawatan Kuasa alias anggota). Tapi sebelum itu, kami harus meeting dan merapatkan masalah interview yang pertama. Siapa yang terpilih, jabatan apa dan biro apa. Dan meeting ini harus dilakukan sesegera mungkin. Karena kalau tidak, kami tidak bisa melakukan interview yang kedua. Meetingnya juga nggak bisa diwakilin, mengingat bahwa yang berhak memilih adalah orang2 yang menginterview.

Yang ketiga, sebelum saya tahu bahwa saya bisa ikut program CAP ke KL, saya sudah terlanjur berjanji dengan senior saya, ka nanda, untuk membantu dia. Kebetulan ketua PPI Malaysia akan datang ke UUM, berkongsi minda dengan orang2 Indonesia disini. Saya pun dimintai tolong untuk memegang acara, yang kebetulan akan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 27 ini. Masak saya tega ninggalin senior yang minta tolong? Bukankah sungguh berdosa junior yang menelantarkan seniornya? Lagian jarang2 kan saya dimintai tolong..

Dan yang terakhir, yang paling berat dan paling terakhir saya ketahui, pada tanggal 28 saya ada presentasi Public Speaking. I'm not a speak devil. Saya bukan orang yang bisa nyerocos mantap tanpa persiapan. Going to KL from 25 until 27, haha. Saya yakin 100% saya tidak akan sempat mempersiapkan apa2. Yang ada nanti saya mejret di tempat.

Maka akhirnya, dengan sedih saya pun mengsms bang Eyo bahwa saya tidak bisa ikut.

Pergi ke KL pastinya best, tetapi saya harus meninggalkan banyak kewajiban disini.

When I was in Vietnam and Cambodia this spring I saw what happens when everybody uses plastic and plastic waste management is virtually non-existent.  This photo is from the Phillippines, but I saw the same thing in Cambodia:

Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year.

Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade—breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web when animals accidentally ingest.

Windblown plastic bags are so prevalent in Africa that a cottage industry has sprung up harvesting bags and using them to weave hats, and even bags. According to the BBC, one group harvests 30,000 per month.
Americans bought 8.3 billion gallons of bottled water in 2006.

Producing PET bottles uses more than 17 million barrels of oil and produces over 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide each year.  For each gallon of water that goes into a PET bottle, two gallons of water are used to make the plastic bottles and purify the water . 462 million gallons of oil are needed each year to transport water bottles from the factory to the point of sale.

In the North Pacific, an enormous gyre (slowly circulating spiral of water) is now known as the "Eastern Garbage Patch. The currents here tend to force any floating material into the low energy central area of the gyre where it stays in the gyre, in astounding quantities estimated at six kilos of plastic for every kilo of naturally occurring plankton.  This tower of trash covers an area the size of Texas. This is only one of several gigantic gyres in the world's oceans.

Larger plastic items are consumed by seabirds and other animals which mistake them for prey. Many seabirds and their chicks have been found dead, their stomachs filled with medium sized plastic items such as bottle tops, lighters and balloons. It has been estimated that over a million sea-birds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and sea turtles are killed each year by ingestion of plastics or entanglement. This poor albatross must have had a horrible stomach ache before he died.

Dutch scientists have counted around 110 pieces of litter for every square kilometre of the seabed, a staggering 600,000 tons in the North Sea alone. These plastics can smother the sea bottom and kill the marine life which is found there.

Paper. Some refer to it as "just-in-time information" or "on-the-job tools." Yes, they come in very handy. Still paper. You might even make copies to share with your colleagues. More paper. Or do they create their own? Even more paper.

Let's face it, it's not a very "Green" thing to do. Plus, if you're not distributing copies of your notes, others are missing out on what are probably some really good tips and tricks, which is also a very bad thing. Think of the time spent writing things down, making copies, etc.

A great, easy way to both share information and "Go Green" is to create a wiki for your office. A wiki is basically a Web site that can be edited by everyone who accesses it. You can quickly create pages, make corrections, and add information to pages already in the wiki. Actually, "wiki" is a Hawaiian word for "fast." Yes, you can do it quickly and easily—and for free. Check out pbwiki.com, wetpaint.com, wikispaces.com, or Google™ "create wiki." When your wiki is created, just sign into it when you get to work each day. Use the Search feature when you're looking for something specific, and if you're tempted to write something down or e-mail a tip to your friend, add it to the wiki instead. Now, that's a smart on-the-job tool.

Go ahead, throw those notes away—in the recycle bin, of course.

I hope your Summer Quarter is off to a great start!

I am initiating a project that I hope will interest you. I would like to enlist your support in helping me to collect your old cell phones (outdated, unwanted, broken, etc.) This is a simple thing that we can all do that will really make a difference both to the environment and to our students!

There are many potentially hazardous chemicals found in the phones, including antimony, arsenic, copper, cadmium, lead, and zinc. But cell phones also include an ore called coltan (columbite-tantalite) which is a source of the element tantalum that is an essential coating for components of cell phones. This ore is extracted in the deep forests of the Congo in the middle of endangered gorilla and elephant habitats. These animals are being killed by rebel bands of natives mining the ore. The U.N. has reported that in the past five years, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla population in the Congo has declined 90%. Reducing the demand for coltan will help save these animals and their habitat.

I have partnered with ECO-CELL, a company which pays organizations for collecting used cell phones, batteries, and accessories. Through their innovative program, 70% of the phones collected will be used by first-time, low income users abroad or by selected local organizations, such as Battered Women's Programs for emergency use (911 calls). ECO-CELL also runs a strict NO LANDFILL Program! All items received, including batteries, accessories, and cell phones with no resale value, will be recycled using the best demonstrated technologies for recycling e-waste. ECO-CELL will be paying for all phones collected. This money will be donated to the Ai scholarship fund.

Photos - keep the best shot from each event in a photo album, place a paragraph write up about it by it in the photo album.

Take a photo of sentimental items - place in an album or scrapbook with a write up about the memory. The item is really about the memory!
