Perhaps it is because I am soon to be turning a year older? Don't know but don't ask ok.

This week instead of keeping my pants up I have been travelling to distant lands in my head transported with words and photos of glorious places and history. Join me in my heaven and have a read through Ilegirl's recount of her trip to Europe (yeah ok I'm still jealous!): 2 July, 3 July, 4 July, 5 July, 6 July, 7 July, 8 July... to be continued... please (pretty please) Why Travel?

Ah her travels bring it all back to me, I remember things as I read through each post that goes before my eyes like a distant dream only to go "Ah back in the day". Yeah I am that old! Time time time that word scares me recently, like I said just a moment ago... don't ask! We take time for granted, we don't remember that it is more how we soar than quack that counts. Sometimes I guess we just forget to live, we forget to experience each and everything fully, our senses are almost dulled by the same old familiar tune. Kick the butt into action and get a haircut, eat a lollipop and really savour the fizzy stuff in the middle, steal a flower from your neighbours garden... desire and live! Cut the snakes , live and be true!

Now there is one thing that I really can't stand in life and that is when you are just starting to formulate your dream and an Asshat comes along and literally tries their level best to destroy the positive energy. Every time that happens it makes me want to go insane on their asses and tell them a little bit about counting their blessings and not polluting the universe with their lack of respect. Hmm perhaps they just wrote the book of Ignorance?

Through those rainy patches in our lives we get to realise our own identities but the one thing we mustn't forget is the fact that it takes courage to be who we really are. It is far easier to morph into what society believes we should be than to just be ourselves.

Perhaps (I love that word) everyone is getting some or rather perhaps no one is? I don't know and I am not going to answer that one either. Sex is the big topic of the week for sure from sleeping in the nude (which is sexy) to confusion within the relationship and the biggest sex organ... yip it gets even more interesting when you add this to the mix. Ok well don't go all monster on me ok, I'm in Africa and poor.

I really should study some more but alas I am sitting here hmm. I wish we were born with unlimited knowledge but it isn't the all powerful that we sometimes believe it to be. Our intellect will only get us so far, maybe we just need to be a different kind of student?

Guess there is a lot I've come to realise along with Amber, Glaize, Kwoneshe2 and soon to be YOU! (Yeah lazy tagging again I blame it on time wasting admiring Star Wars Art for I don't watch TV though I hear that True Blood is good *shrug*)

The first section I skimmed a lot but once I got to the second part I really started to understand what Palmer was driving at and went back and re-read the first few chapters. Based on her experience as a movie studio executive who was pitched ideas day in and day out she tells you how to handle presentations. This is full of great practical tips and provides excellent examples through the use of four fictional case studies. A particular thing I liked was later in the book when discussing how to write an effective pitch email she footnotes the email to explain why something was good or bad. Very good advice and this book goes the extra step by showing you specifically how to apply it.

Definitely going on my recommended list.

One of the best techniques to handle stress is through breathing. Take deliberate, shallow breaths. Take air in through the nostrils and exhale quietly through your mouth. This is a technique that should be practiced as a relaxation technique before the interview so that your body gets used to slowing down the breathing process and relaxing.

Relaxation techniques such as yoga, and meditation classes, are recommended for anyone who has an extreme case of "interview fright." The interview can cause panic attacks if the fear is strong enough. Pre-conditioning will do wonders for this type of anxiety.

Preparation before the interview

Since Tilia misrepresented my relationship with Kip so distastefully as to almost suggest he was a one night stand in her post about her London Gwag Royce Part 1, I felt I should set the story straight now rather than later.

So Kip and I met during a film shoot, which was essentially, my film shoot, during college in London. I was writing and directing a short and he was hired by my course leader to be my director of photography. He himself, was in film school there and came highly recommended. Well just taking a look at him I could have told you that.

We met over coffee for pre-production talk, as filming would commence the following weekend. We connected instantly. (And contrary to this website's material, you may think this happens to me often, but it really doesn't) We had a shared love for deep conversation and philosophy that I rarely find.

Kip was originally from a respectable family in New Delhi and had originally intended to go into economics and engineering like his Muslim father. But during college, his brother introduced him to some documentary filmmakers and Kip discovered he wasn't destined for a 9 to 5 job. He fled to London on a film scholarship to begin his career.

The filming went smoothly, we finished on budget, early, actors were happy and did I mention the camera guy was the best part? We became fast friends but nothing more until the night of the premiere where I was late to my own film. (smooth) Afterwards, there was lots of free champagne, and at this point in my life not only did I lack the sense of a cut off period, I didn't care, as Grey was there with his twit girlfriend, drinking nothing but orange juice.

This upset me more than you could imagine.

However, my chivalrous and handsome friend Kip took care of me that night as I, no doubt, made a complete ass of myself. He saved me from almost losing my passport, and escorted me to the tube station where he sat with me for almost 15 minutes until the last one came. I put my head on his shoulder and he lightly stroked me hair. At that moment, we were more than just friends.

Sadly, soon after our flirtatious period of drinking in Covent Garden and spending lots of time in unconventional conversation, I'd decided it was financially necessary for me to move back to America at the time, where he would stay in London for a while. It was because of this decision that I made a conscious effort not to sleep with him. I was afraid of falling in love with him.

Kip gave me a beautiful going away present that he bought on the streets of New Delhi; an embroidered Indian tunic and skirt, which for some reason fit me perfectly, even though he had no idea what size I was, nor had he even gotten a decent glimpse. (If you know what I mean, wink)

So we parted ways, but kept in constant touch. It wasn't until a couple months later that I regretted what could have been and actually admitted this to him. Hardly surprised, he expressed the same regret and I made a radical decision to return back to London that December for my 'graduation' which I'd never intended to go to. I needed to see Kip again.

So I arrived in London for a week, where Tilia also joined and we stayed in my old flat thanks to my lovely landlord.

Kip and I finally consummated our relationship and it was a sort of fairy tale week that felt like only a couple of days. (Oh and can I just say the sex was amazing) We drove out to the English countryside one night and spent almost 3 hours in a Christmas decorated tavern with leather couches, a fireplace and lots of mistletoe. We went to our favorite pubs and instead of talking, just made out with each other. (Consider it making up for lost time)

To make it even more movie-esque, he had decided to travel back to India the same day I would later fly back to America. He was going to 'Chaiya Chaiya Bollywood' to try his hand at becoming a famous director and I was embarking on a journey to Hollywood to become a famous writer.

After spending hours together at Heathrow airport on the night of his departure, neither one of us knowing what would happen next, but admitting we still had a desire to try to be together, he walked off into the distance after a kiss goodbye, I returned back to the flat, packed my suitcase and left for America.

(This was the same night Tilia, Royce and I attended the play readings and, hence the part where Tilia goes on a tour of London with Royce)

As time passed, we became more and more distant. And if the time zone difference wasn't enough, our lack of finances also hurt our chances in the communication department. So it was only recently that I called it off between us. Not necessarily due to any fault of either party, but just a lack of knowing what will happen to us in the future.

Kip is, however, planning to visit London later this year, and I told him I wouldn't rule out the possibility of seeing him again.

Because in a way with Kip, I felt I'd found my counterpart and it was, and still is, the only time I've been in love with someone despite their faults.

I love living here. It's got its own little buzz going on, it's close to town, but still quiet and the Docklands Authority are really trying to make sure that some culture and fun is injected into the area.

There are lots of nice places to eat and drink - Riva, Milano, Ely HQ, Ocean, The Ferryman. There's Fresh for nice supermarket food, KC Peaches for yummy brunches, an Italian bakery for fancy coffee and fabulous bread and, of course, a nice square to lounge around in.

It's well worth a visit. (And, as an added bonus, every now and again a swan wanders up from the canal and throws you dirty looks).

In 2004 Pekka Rautionmaa produced the 52 minutes music-documentary “First Lady Of Bass” about electric bass innovator Carol Kaye for the Finnish broadcaster YLE. There's a long extract of it on YouTube.

Carol Kaye started her career as jazz guitarist in the late nineteen-forties. In the late nineteen-fifties she started working in the music studios of Los Angeles, playing guitar for legends like Sam Cooke and Ritchie Valens. In the early sixties she picked up the electric bass. Thanks to her talent of creating catchy bass lines, her music reading ability and her versatility in all kinds of styles, she soon became the number one electric bass player in Los Angeles.

Carol Kaye recorded among others for Elvis, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds, The Monkees, The Doors, Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Count Basie, Hampton Hawes, Mel Tormé and Barbara Streisand. Her TV and movie credits include Mission Impossible, Hawaii 5-O, M*A*S*H, Streets of San Francisco, In The Heat Of The Night, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, Bullitt and Sugarland Express.

Hotel Review - Premier Inn Stirling; A Real Suprise Package, Recommended!

Well here it is, the first, of what I hope will be many, genuine, fair, constructive and helpful hotel reviews!

I stayed at Premier Inn Stirling not too long ago on a visit to Scotland to see my girlfriends Sister. And yes, before you ask, my girlfriend was with me! =)

I chose the the hotel as I don't trust anyone else in this area, and as usual spent a good few hours trawling the net, checking prices and reading reviews.

Originally, it was suggested that we stay at the local Travelodge by my girlfriends parents, who were also traveling with us, as they wanted somewhere cheap and cheerful. However I soon put the dampeners on that after reading several bad reviews about the place.

Now I'm the first to admit that online hotel reviews aren't always the most reliable, with most people using them as a soapbox to vent their frustration about something most of us would overlook, but in this case the reviews all reported several common issues - always a good indication that the thing they are highlighting is in fact true.

Instead I plumped for Premier Inn, which offered similar prices and considerably better feedback. This is pretty unusual for me, as I'm a bit of a snob and always think I can squeeze something 'better' out of my budget. However I was to be presently surprised.

On arrival the location wasn't great, but I knew that so it wasn't a shock. The outside of the building was plain and drab and the reception was tiny and basic. We we handed our keys by a chirpy Scottish woman, after some pleasant chitchat about the weather and how much she loved our hometown of Scarborough, and headed off to find our room.

Our rooms were located on the first floor down a long narrow corridor. We'd booked a double and the inlaws a twin. As soon as we opened the door, i breathed a sigh of relief. The room was well nice! Modern, contemporary, clean and of a good size. Plenty of wardrobe space, a desk, bedside tables all in good nick - a fair sized bathroom, again modern and contemporary, clean and tidy.

But here was the highlight - the bed! A King size marshmallow of comfort! I read somewhere in the rooms basic compendium, that Premier Inn are so convinced you'll have a good nights sleep, that if you don't they'll give you your money back - no wonder they are so confident, these beds were sooooo comfy!

Breakfast was optional and served in the adjacent Brewers Fayre pub as was Dinner. We sampled both with breakfast been the best option. Dinner was of a typical chain pub quality, looks great on the menu, reads great, is priced like it's going to be great but is actually average at best. Breakfast was standard buffet with a choice of continental or cooked - but at £7.50 for all you can eat, go cooked, it was good!

BATMAN – THE DARK KNIGHT

WOW…this movie really re-invigorates the Batman franchise. At a cost of $US180m, it looks like Hollywood is going to make a mint on this movie. For instance, in the first couple of weeks in the US, the movie has already grossed $US190m. Not bad!

And why are people going? Well I can think of following reasons -

(1) Batman movies are always worth going to watch;

(2) Like any Hollywood movie there has been a lot of build up, publicity and word of mouth;

(3) Many will want to see how the franchise progresses after Batman Begins;

(4) Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker. For those who remember the original Batman movie (1989), it had Jack Nicholson play the part of the Joker. At the time I can remember thinking that no-one would come close to acting in that league in an equivalent movie. Well I guess I was wrong. This performance by Ledger easily matches the earlier movie, if not exceeds it.

Without listing spoilers there are some amazing scenes in this movie. Watch out for the sky shots over the city. Watch out for Joker and a truck crash. Also in another scene, you can't miss Gotham hospital + the Joker + a fair few explosives. Say no more. A few major highlights – but there are many more.

Some may argue the movie was a bit too long. Some may say it is a bit too graphic and not suitable for kids. Others just may be confused where this movie fits into the Batman movie series and where to go from here?

Fortunately I am not one of these. All I can say it this is a must see for 2008 and will feature in a lot of people’s ratings as one of the Top 10 movies of the year.

Make sure you see this flick. WOW!

My first pet was a goldfish. Immediately after winning him/her at the county fair ring toss, I took my prize home, flipped to the very back of the baby name book and decided to call my fish Zbigniew. While very enthusiastic about picking a name, I didn't know all that much about goldfish themselves. If only I could have read Robert Snedden's book on the subject, I would have been more well informed. Part of the "Living Things" series, "Fish" gives a comprehensive overview of the species.

The table of contents lays out the plan. Each two-page section sheds light on a different aspect of fish existence. From how they move to how they eat, it's all covered. An index and glossary add some back page informational value. Also included is a section with websites for further exploration.

The overall design is solid. Each page contains pictures to help illustrate the facts being served. Diagrams are also used to drop knowledge on more intricate subjects, like fish eye function.

Being a school librarian, I always take a moment to look at nonfiction titles through a teacher's eyes. How will this book be used in a school setting? While not created to be a resource on specific fish, this will be a first-rate title for students with a hankerin' for general information. An impressive collection of facts for young readers.
