Fast-forward to the present. I was tripping across the internet when I encountered this post by David G who linked us all to a site that will check the reading level of your blog. Well, of course I had to go check it out for myself for Musings of a Housewife, especially after the comments by my better half. Having browsed some of the results David got for a variety of blogs, I expected a reading level of high school perhaps. Imagine my surprise...

I guess it really is a dark cloud that has no silver lining, as this is a result I really like!

The reading level, who knows... I think I could be using too many small words and short sentences. Maybe I need to start adding a few gerunds, some prepositional phrases and an couple infinitives to beef up the writing. I'll get out my Rogets and my Gregg Reference Manual, and surprise you all sometime.

With the writers' strike finally over, after shutting down the movie and television industry for a little more than 14 weeks, I think I may have stumbled onto a new vocation. 

Apparently, my blog is written with the intellect of a 10 year old, and the dirty mind of a 40 year old. Sounds like a winning combination if I wanted to bang out movie scripts or TV screenplays.

I know my bloggy readers are brilliant, fine, upstanding citizens, so I better step up my game. 

The other challenge is that of words. I love words. I enjoy finding exactly the right word to express what I want to say. But I also realize that those of you who have come to English as a second (or third) language might think I use too many words. So I checked out my blog reading level and found, with mixed feelings, that my writing is not particularly accessible.

So now I'm in a quandary. I believe in clear speaking, and I often rail against government documents which seem intended to obfuscate rather than to communicate. Yet I am loath to simplify my language because I need to write to please myself first, and I have enough ego to like the sound of my own voice.

Now, I suppose there are ways

As fun as that would be, I have to admit that others are doing that job much better than I could ever imagine.

Besides, what grabs my attention isn't fashion or fleeting stardom -- I'd rather read about a new species of animal or a new idea, a technological challenge or a social solution, an analysis of a big-picture situation or a glimpse into a small but significant corner of the world. My goal is to share a bit of information along with my interest and concern and delight, so I will do whatever I can to make sure that language doesn't get in the way.

So I'm the barely literate blogger whose next review will be See Spot Run, since that's where my writing level's at. Stupid Internet tests.

Saya sudah "nyoba" untuk "ngetes" blog saya ini, hasilnya mencengangkan, mudah-mudahan blog saya bukan hanya untuk orang genius saja, hehehehe. Tapi yang saya belum tahu, penilaiannya berdasarkan apa ya?

 I took one of those dumb quizzes, and look at the results!  This blog can be understood by morons.  Now I'm really depressed.

 One of these days, I'll create a post with HUGE multisyllabic words and see if it changes the reading level to at least middle school.  Meanwhile, it's time to get back to reading this excellent book: Hop on Pop.

Or rather that I am wasting my time before going to sleep.

According to the Blog Readability Test at Critics Rant, the reading level of this blog is 'genius' — in the same category as The Economist and Nature, and considerably less readable than, say, Boing Boing ('elementary school') or the New York Times ('junior high school').

However, in my (admittedly feeble) defense, I'd like to point out that Cambridge, MA, probably has the world's highest concentration of literate, geeky bands with overeducated lead singers. So instead of talking about bands whose lyrics are in the 'yeah yeah yeah baby' school, I get to enthuse about bands like The Franklin Kite, whose lyrics include words like 'disambiguate,' 'conducive,' and 'malignant.' Lead singer Ryan Hickox just got his PhD in astrophysics from MIT (and to celebrate his successful thesis defence, they held a concert). He's still local though, having joined the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics as a postdoc. If you are in the neighbourhood, go check them out at Tommy Doyle's in Harvard Square on Friday, February 1st, 2008 (I think it's some kind of Harvard-oriented concert, but don't let that put you off).

So, I entered my Sexy Spanish Club in Buenos Aires blog at http://www.SexySpanishClub.blogspot.com  and it turns out that it's written for the junior high level.  Hmmm.  Well, it's pretty casual.  It's not about education--it's about living a creative life here in Argentina.  So, I'm okay with that.

Then I entered my mindfulness blog at http://www.MassageYourMind.wordpress.com and it also got a junior high rating.  Well, I make a point of speaking simply because my premise is that mindfulness isn't a difficult concept and that ANYONE can learn how to pay attention in simple, enjoyable ways.  So, that makes sense, too.

And then I entered this blog.  The rating?  Well, according to the site, you have to be a GENIUS to understand this blog you're reading.

Oh, come on.  A GENIUS?  Either the standards for genius are pretty low or I've somehow stuck in a few hoity-toity words that only the most brilliant readers will understand.

I'm trying to keep this information accessible and relevant to students, parents, teachers, and school administrators.  I don't think there's anything here that's too academic, and if this blog is rated at the genius level, I wonder what some of the headier blogs I read are rated? 

I mean, is there a level ABOVE genius? 

One of the smartest blogs I read is Richard Florida's Creative Class Exchange at http://www.creativeclass.com.  His ranked at the high school level.

Then I checked my colleague Matthew K. Tabor's site at http://www.MatthewKTabor.com  His is at the high school level, too.

I entered Eduwonk's site ("Education News, Analysis and Commentary") at http://www.eduwonk.com and that came in at the junior high school level! 

What gives?  How come mine is so, um, brainy?

THIS one?: Junior High (so far...!!!)

It works out the level of education is required to understand a blog. The test also works on just about any website.

To grasp the contents of the new website of the UBC School of Journalism, where I teach, you must be a college post-grad. Well, it is a graduate school.
