this is a 15.4 inch screen display laptop with xp and a intel celeron m processor. the laptop is relatively light for 15 inch display. it has a stop antitheft system with government property tags and such. this laptop is for educational purposes only and must be retuned once i am done with insight. it has office 07 and such.

-laptop case

for the laptop came a laptop case with the insight logo on the front made by Targus. the bag is new and i am hoping i can keep it after the insight program is complete.

-lexmark x2600m printer

for the laptop was a printer/scanner that is brand new still wrapped up and in the box.

-multimedia headset

lastly i received a hedset from micro for my online classes and online chat. yet to open.

So thats what came in the hardware kit. I am still waiting for my course materials and books for my classes. also i got a directional packet called tech check. the packet shows how to make sure everything is in working order. on one page it says to do a email check but to do this i need the passwords and such to get my e-mail and get on the net and show the computer i am its current owner. the passwords were supposed to come in a tracking e-mail for the equipment. so now i have to wait for that e-mail even though it should have been sent before the box. so without that no e-mail check and no internet because of a password application. I hope that e-mail comes soon. but so far i like that the thing showed up and soon i can start preparing for insight. 

only a matter of weeks till school starts. I am getting very excited.

Pertanyaan itu saya dapatkan dari microsite HP, persisnya di halaman Quiz, ketika saya iseng-iseng berselancar mencari informasi tentang printer dan tintanya. Microsite ini tentu saja milik HP Indonesia.

Ehm, memangnya mau beli mesin cetak, Ndoro? Oh, bukan, Ki Sanak. Bukan. Saya mencari informasi itu karena tuntutan pekerjaan. Halah. Lagi pula, saya toh harus mengetahui banyak hal, biar ndak terlalu ketinggalan kabar, dan tetap bisa ngeblog.

Nah, kebetulan saya sering lewat kawasan pertokoan di dekat rumah saya. Ada salah satu toko di sana yang menarik perhatian. Toko itu menyediakan layanan isi ulang tinta printer. Hampir setiap hari toko itu dipenuhi pembeli.

Dalam hati saya bertanya-tanya, kenapa toko itu laris? Apakah menggunakan tinta isi ulang benar-benar menguntungkan konsumen?

Terus terang saya ndak tahu jawabannya. Saya bukan tukang IT, techno geek atau apa pun namanya. Saya hanya orang yang selalu penasaran dan ingin tahu. Saya lalu berusaha mencari jawabannya di Google.

Dan, nyasarlah saya di microsite HP yang cukup informatif. Setelah saya baca-baca, lantas bertanya kiri dan kanan, menelepon si Anu dan si Una, saya beroleh informasi tentang tinta printer dan pernak-pernik lainnya. Antara lain saya menemukan jawaban seperti ini,

Selama ini banyak pemahaman keliru seputar Original HP Supplies, seperti harga tinta yang mahal, pengisian tinta yang repot, dan mesin printer yang rewel (gampang rusak).

Melalui pengujian TUV SUV PSB (lembaga sertifikasi produk internasional) ternyata Original HP Supllies terbukti lebih hemat (murah) karena memiliki kemampuan mencetak kertas yang 2,4 kali lebih banyak dibandingkan tinta refill dan tahan pudar hingga 200 tahun.

• PIII 833 with Ubuntu 8.04.1 Server Edition
• MacBook Core 2 Duo 1.83
• Kyocera FS-680 Laserprinter

Not state of the art, but usable. So here is a step by step howto (all code quotes should be in one line):

First install Ubuntu 8.04 with cups printserver. Login via ssh and enable remote administration via http (not necessary but comfortable):

you@ubuntu: sudo cupsctl --remote-admin --remote-printers --share-printers

After restarting cups with:

you@ubuntu: sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

you can use the webinterface of cups to configure your printer. Note that you have to switch-on printers connected to the parallelport before you boot. After configuring the printer test it via the webinterface. Before you can reach your printer you have to set app-armor to complain mode for the cupsd. Use:

you@ubuntu:~$ sudo aa-complain cupsd

At a local network this shouldn't be a problem, but it is a possible vulnerability.

Now you can go on and configure the mac. I had to install foomatic-rip from the Linux Foundation to use the hpijs driver, which is the recommended driver for the FS-680. After this open the printer system preferences and add a new printer by clicking +. In the popup window select IP then Internet Printing Protocol. Adress is the IP of your server with the cups port 631. The printer queue is /printers/your_printer_name. Name and location are free to choose. At last select the driver. That's it. Your printer should work now.

As an Indian user of high technology products to interface with my top quality and latest Ubuntu Linux PC Desktop or Laptop Computer from high technology companies - I have started REJECTING those peripherals and those companies which have not bothered to release free and open source Linux drivers for their devices. As with the best printers and high performance graphic cards, it is always best to do some research on whether a foreign company well known for manufacturing and distributing.

Many white goods companies are going ballistic in advertising that they sell a ( High Quality ? ) product to Indian users and in Indian markets EVERY three SECONDS. But do these companies sell products that play well with your Ubuntu Laptop ?

Make sure before you buy. Let them WAIT for THREE HOURS before they sell a product to Indian consumers.

Olympus is one of those companies making small and tiny Digital Voice Recorders - (good for sting operations on Indian politicians who excel in buying Votes for Notes for Civil Nuclear Treaty and solving the power and energy crisis of Indians - hamara nara, ghar ghar mein bijli pahuchana .... )

Unfortunately Olympus has not bothered to release free and open source software drivers for their Digital Voice Recorders. As far as I am concerned Olympus Digital Voice Recorder is USELESS till it makes available free and easily downloadable software drivers to work with my UBUNTU Laptop running on BSNL Broadband Internet.

No point buying rubbish electronic junk and e-waste which DOES NOT work with Ubuntu Linux computers in India. And this will be public service of voluntary nature as Indian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has hardly any guidelines for disposing electronic and computer junk and how to penalise those foreign companies which sell outdated technologies in India - Litter packaged up as Glitter . So before investing any rupees in more electronic junk and devices, ALWAYS check if it WORKS well with Ubuntu Linux.

Ternyata driver printer HP LaserJet 1020 pada Ubuntu 8.04 belum tedeteksi dengan baik (ada tapi tak bisa dipakai) bahkan disitusnya foo2zjs (penyedia driver hp-red) menyatakan

ekstrak paketnya :

$ tar zxvf foo2zjs.tar.gz

Pindah ke sub direktori driver :

$ cd foo2zjs

Lakukan instalasi

$ make

download file ekstra dari web, seperti .ICM profiles untuk color correction,
dan firmware.

$ ./getweb 1020 # Get HP LaserJet 1020 firmware file

Install driver, foomatic XML files, and extra files:

$ su
# make install

OR

$ sudo make install

konfigurasi hotplug (USB; HP LJ 1000/1005/1018/1020):

(Optional) restart service CUPS:

# make cups

OR

Dan akhirnya selamat menikmati printer anda dapat diinstal seperti biasa dan dapat mencetak dengan normal.

oh contraire! one must define a new local port and then install the printer as follows....Create new port, "local port", then Vista asks "port name". In  "port name"  "\\my computer name(where my printer is installed)\printer name".  Solution found here. (http://forums.techguy.org).

So there is yet one more Vista wierdness.....
