Coheed & Cambria @ Mac Hall May 24/08. Pride Tiger are one of those
bands that really suprised me. Their drummer is the singer and he is
really good and have some amazing guitar work. Baroness have some
pretty amazing guitar work but I found some of their music to be
quite repetitive. Also, their singing when they do have it, is pretty
dull. Bands like Coheed are great to watch because they play their
music and don't talk. They played for a good hour and 15 and then had
a 1/2 hour encore ending with a 10 min drum solo. Really enjoyed
their set.

Picks,

Pride Tiger: No customs ( custom Drumsticks)

Baroness: No Customs

Coheed: No Customs ( Though they usually do??)

Best Position: Stage Right-center

Note: Guitar tech throws picks a couple minutes after and listen
for "Crisp Lettuce" during mic check :)

Rock Hard, Rock Loud & Rock On!

I found this recent article about the current resurgence of vinyl, relatively speaking, as we watch

I found this recent article about the current resurgence of vinyl, relatively speaking, as we watch CD sales decline drastically year after year. As I've said before, CD's just aren't sexy...at all. Have you ever gone to a used CD store and had an enjoyable experience? No, CD's just aren't fun to flip through and look at. When CDs first came out, they were tauted as the indestructible medium of the future, but we've all found that a CD skip can just about render a CD unplayable. As a guy with tens of thousands of mp3's, hundreds of CD's, and hundreds of vinyl albums, I can objectively say that the CD is the weak link. You've heard me say it before... record companies: start selling records again with a code for the digital files to redeem online. There is no need for a CD any longer! Some record companies are hearing me and I even have an album by a new band called Pride Tiger (EMI) sitting here in my work studio with the digital files code inside AND a silk-screened poster created by the band. Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Here's the recent WIRED article on vinyl's resurgence.

What do you think? Are you tied to CD's? Do you have a turntable? Am I a geek?

Well... can't say I didn't tell you so.
Richard Branson is a mighty douche, and didn't we all know it.

The Lineup for Virgin Fest Calgary was announced today, and the true shit-mix of acts looks like some sort of samonella potluck.

I have 3 words for you: Three Days Grace

And although that should speak for itself, lets think about this for a second...

How does this lineup make any sense at all... ?
No amount of The New Pornographers, Constantines, Stars or Flaming Lips could get me through that set. Sorry guys, you've all been overpowered and de-cooled by the SUCK. I seriously think the only way I could actually make it through the Three Days set is if I actually set myself on fire, immersed my head in one of the portable toilets or harpooned myself on the sharpest object in Fort Calgary (A Canadian Flag? How fitting!). Seriously, the alternative is always worse than the above, and no amount of ear plugs, headphones, plastic bags, sweat pants, quesadillas, crotch-socks or jockstraps would or COULD get me through it.

So, if you're a total masochist and you have a huge hate-on for music, here is where you get tickets
AKA: $125 to kick yourself in the nut-sack.

As for the rest of you, read it and weep:

Stone Temple Pilots
The Tragically Hip
The Flaming Lips
City and Colour
Mathew good
Three Days Grace
The New Pornographers
Stars
Corb Lund
Fact to Face
Constantines
Attack in Black
Pride Tiger
Crash Parallel
The Dudes
The Whitsundays
Ten Second Epic
The Spades
Said the Whale

For those looking for even more info on how shitty Virgin Fest really is, make a stop at the Annotated Everything for the run-down.

Calgary's Sled Island Festival released it's 2008 lineup yesterday, and things are looking up for all the cow-folk in cowtown.

Although the full lineup has yet to be completely unveiled (May 1st), this is a pretty good start!
Artists attending thus far include:

RZA (Bobby Digital), Mogwai, Of Montreal, Wire, Drive-by Truckers, Jose Gonzales, Extra Golden, Gutter Twins, Beans, Jonathan Richman, The Dodos, Pride Tiger, Wet Secrets, Carolyn Mark, Elliot Brood, Deerhunter, Headlights, Miss Muragatroid & Petra Haden, Portastatic, Scott Kannenberg (former ‘Pavement’ gutarist/ Guest Festival Curator/ Founder of ‘Preston School of Industry/ Spiral Stairs/ Childhood friend of Stephan Malkmus, could he be booked?), Whitsundays, Luther Wright, Woodpidgeon, Mother Mother, Modern Man, Broken West, No Age, American Music Club, Elizabeth, Women, The CaveSingers.

Possible Rumors Include:

Stephan Malkmus and the Jicks, Peaches, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Corb Lund,Black Mountain, She and Him, The Kills

Sled Island will take place June 25-28th at the Shaw Millenium Park (Calgary, AB). And I have a sneaking suspicion that it is going to totally blow the up-and-coming Virgin Music Fest out of the water! Here's hoping!! I'd rather attend a Festival that showcases local talent before another that is supported by giant corporations, and headed by some billionaire asshole who consistently forgets to shave. But...for the record... I'll probably go to both.

June is pretty much slotted to be the best month of the year, if you're living in Calgary!
