An unnamed powerseller who has been registered with ebay since November 2005 and has over 28,000 sales under his belt writes:

It seems like such a negative place to sell these days. Buyers expectations are higher than ever. Negative feedbacks are at an all time high for us...yet our service has not changed...if anything it has improved. Seems like ebay has been successful in creating a buyers vs. sellers atmosphere. I think it stinks.

I find myself not caring as much as I used to because when you do a good job and it's still never good enough it kind of lowers your own expectations. I went from 99.9% to 99.4% and from about 5 negs in the first few years (out of 20,000) to 14 more in the last couple months. My buyers are so quick to be nasty...it's like the first defense. It's like they can do what they want and it doesn't even matter if they are right - they are always right when it comes to feedback. I have had several of them regret it and email me back to try to remove it but it can't even be removed anymore. You know the drill.

His post has been well recieved with many other sellers who are feeling the same negative vibe.

Ebay is a tough place to be right now. It's difficult enough to operate a business in an open forum where competitors regularly make underhanded purchases from one another in order to defeat the competiton, throw in some salt, add a few insults and you've got yourself a number of very unhappy sellers.

It was a very long drive back home to Western New York. With over 8 hours on the road, I have had a chance to reflect on the friends with which I reconnected, the new friends I met, and the one friend I fear is gone forever, eBayLive. I have had the pleasure of attending 6 of the 7 previous eBayLive events, and since it has already been announced that there will be no such event in 2009, I fear that the announced 2010 eBayLive in Orlando will not happen, or if it does, it certainly will not be the event as I knew it, much like eBayLive 2008 was certainly not anything like the 6 previous conferences. It was defintely sad to see the dramatic change in the atmosphere in this year's event. One eBay employee that I spoke with said that there were 7000 registrations prior to the start of the event, yet I and many of the vendors and attendees that I spoke with felt the number of actual attendees was significantly lower. One indication of this I saw was at the Gala on Saturday evening when over 25 large boxes of eBayLive 2008 shoulder bags, the bags given out when attendees picked up their badges, were placed out on the Gala floor for the taking. In addition, we noticed that all of the tables at the Gala had several extra bags on the chairs.

Another sign that all was not good at the event was the very noticeable presence of a large security force. Now there has always been security, but not in the numbers and not as visible as at this years event.

The most obvious indication of the concern of eBay members was the mood. From the opening of the exhibit floor on Thursday, the mood of the attendees was in my humble opinion, depressed. The large number of eBay booths on the exhibit floor with large numbers of eBay employees staffing them, were often nearly empty. I witnessed the employees huddled together talking because there were no customers crowding around their booths as in years past. The attendees were subdued, and the exhibit floor was quiet.

Also notable was the obvious decrease in vendors and exhibitors. The exhibit floor was occupied by a large number of eBay booths, but it was very obvious that there were probably 30-40% fewer exhibitors over previous years.

When talking with vendors and exhibitors, they all mentioned the change in the demographics of the attendees. In previous years, there was a healthy mix of new users and experienced PowerSellers. This year there appeared to be far fewer newer users and the general feeling is that the vast majority of attendees were more experienced users looking for information on multi-channel marketing. This indicates to me that sellers are looking to move away from eBay to other venues.

The one thing that really glares to many experienced eBayLive attendees is that eBay usually makes at least one major announcement during the event. This year, with the exception of the PayPal changes, and the opening of the eBay API to third party developers, there was no BIG announcement. Many attendees are worried that the usual major announcements will be made in the days or weeks to come via the eBay Announcements Board and email because eBay did not want to risk a major confrontation with the users at the event.

Well, that is just a brief synopsis of my reflections of the event. I certainly will post more as I digest and review my notes and the 10+ hours of podcasts that we recorded and will be available later today on our website www.basicstobusiness.com.

Another blow to the ebay business! Ebay is falling like a rock because they still do not know what their true client is... Are they catering to the buyers or to sellers that pay the listing fees. With all the recent policy changes in the last 6 months, it is very hard to make a sell or even stay compliant with the ebay policies.

Power Sellers and regular sellers are fed up, while looking for alternative ebay type sites to sell their products. It seems that ebay just does not care for who they piss off or change the policies to disallow everybody. This business action just makes it seem that they are big and do not care about their users, whether it buyers or sellers. They are just going downhill, and waiting to loose control to crash and burn. The core of any brokerage business is your sellers because they are the ones that pay the fees... Buyers are attracted because they do not pay anything for the transaction, they just feel that they are getting a deal on the item they agreed to purchase. Just watch the video below, click the link, another whoo!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-JjepaCDOM

Here is an ebay alternative site that I have found is worthy of mentioning...SoAuctionIt.com . For the remainder of May, they are having FREE auction style listings and 50% off Buy It Now Fees... This site has No Tiered Listing Fees, No Final Value Fees, No Reserve Fees, Just One Flat Fee to sell your items. Visit today and receive $10 added to your sellers account to apply for any listing upgrades.

Did Ebay Kill Your Online Business?

Recently I hit a bump in the road when Ebay suspended my Power Seller becuase they feel that I was in violation of their feedback policy... They stated becuse I was selling cheap products in my store that this was an intent of boosting my feedback rating and the searching buyers were doing the same...

I looked into other Power Sellers that I knew in the community and their accounts were suspended also... Does Ebay care about that much on their feedback that they would suspend the core of their business to make examples? I made over $3000 in the month of March and was going to launch a boot camp for others on how to sell on ebay with results that I have strivedand achieved.... I am going to kill that idea at least the part on ebay... As for making money online, that was the core of my business, but with the knowledge I have gained, I am going to use some other sites for my business. Yes they get alot of traffic however there are some other alternative auction sites.

With all these policy changes that also have been put into place, it has really hit hard on the ebay community... Coming soon, sellers will not be able to leave a nuetral or negative feedback on the buyers, only a positive... So buyers are just so canny that if you do not respondwithin 24 hours, they will leave a negative feedback. I thought feedback was based on the whole transaction experience. It has hit a high note in my with all these changes. It will be a very long time before I sell anything on that site ever again. I told them to take their power seller status and shove it. I am sick and tired of walking on eggshells to retain that title... Yes, it does show integrity and that I am not on the site for a day to sell just one item. I was there to make an online business.

The transaction experience is based upon customer service, how fast they get their item and keeping an open line of communication. It is so simple, follow up and follow through. Ebay has made is so complicticated in the last few months with their policy changes. I know rules are meant to keep a peace and harmony., but when you change them from on day to the next without warning... That is wrong! Then calling sellers out that they are in violation this policy and fees will not be credited because of the policy violation. There is no customer service there, this is dealing with your internal customers, which are your sellers. I do not mean to go off on a tangent, but this issue has really effected me... When my account was suspended, it was like getting fired from a job. This is why it has been fraustrating to me.

I have found a new home on soauctionit.com , the fees on this site is so much less than the previous online market place. It is a new site but I see the potential of the growth and saving me overhead fees to use and list my items. they are offering new members FREE signup and $10 worth of sellers fees deposited in your account. I have redirected my ebay store domain (monsterchange.net) to point to this site. I invite others to join this site to save money on selling your items and the incentive to have a FREE signup on soauctionit.com and come realize that there is an alternative that has lower fees while not changing the policy rules in the middle of the game.

Thanks,

Staying Out of Trouble with eBay's Listing Policies.

While you can sell most things on eBay, quite a few things are banned. If you try to sell any of these things then eBay will remove your auction and all bids will be void.

Here is eBay's full list of prohibited or questionable items:

Academic Software
Airline and Transit Related Items
Alcohol (also see Wine)
Animals and Wildlife Products
Anti-circumvention Policy
Artifacts
Authenticity Disclaimers
Autographed Items
Batteries
Beta Software
Bootleg Recordings
Brand Name Misuse
Catalog Sales
Catalytic Converters and Test Pipes
Celebrity Material
Charity or Fundraising Listings
Comparison Policy
Compilation and Informational Media
Contracts and Tickets
Counterfeit Currency and Stamps
Counterfeit Items
Credit Cards
Downloadable Media
Drugs & Drug Paraphernalia
Electronics Equipment
Embargoed Goods and Prohibited Countries
Encouraging Infringement Policy
Event Tickets
Faces, Names and Signatures
Firearms, Ammunition, Replicas, and Militaria
Fireworks
Food
Freon and Other Refrigerants
Gift Cards
Government IDs and Licenses
Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Items
Human Parts and Remains
Importation of Goods into the United States
International Trading - Buyers
International Trading - Sellers
Lockpicking Devices
Lottery Tickets
Mailing Lists and Personal Information
Manufacturers' Coupons
Mature Audiences
Medical Devices
Misleading Titles
Mod Chips, Game Enhancers, and Boot Discs
Movie Prints
Multi-level Marketing, Pyramid and Matrix Programs
OEM Software
Offensive Material
Pesticides
Plants and Seeds
Police-Related Items
Political Memorabilia
Postage Meters
Pre-Sale Listings
Prescription Drugs and Devices
Promotional Items
Real Estate
Recalled Items
Recordable Media
Replica and Counterfeit Items
Satellite and Cable TV Descramblers
Slot Machines
Stocks and Other Securities
Stolen Property
Surveillance Equipment
Tobacco
Travel
Unauthorized Copies
Used Clothing
Warranties
Weapons & Knives
Wine (also see Alcohol)

Most of this is very obvious - of course you can't sell illegal things like drugs, pyramid schemes or stolen goods. Almost everything that is on the list is there because there is law against selling it. Some of the reasons, though, are a little strange.

The 'autographed items' entry, for example, doesn't mean that you can't sell anything that's been autographed - it just means that you can only sell it if it comes with a certificate of authenticity. The 'artifacts' entry prohibits you from selling Native American graves; 'celebrity material' means you can't sell unauthorised pictures of celebrities; 'embargoed goods' means that you can't sell anything that comes from Cuba… on and on it goes, and most of it you never need to know.

If your chosen kind of item seems to be on the list, though, and you're concerned that you might not be able to sell it, then check the full list at http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html to see whether the item is banned entirely or there are just a few restrictions.

eBay says it will remove any items that it believes violate copyright law, but in reality they don't have that many people to monitor the site. You will generally only find that your auction gets removed if someone decides to report you - and even then, they might not get around to it.

Really, buying and selling on eBay can sometimes feel more complicated than it really is, thanks to all the rules surrounding it - not to mention the jargon. My Next blog entry is a 'jargon buster', to help you learn the language of eBay.
