Waxapples/Glitter & Grime

Just when you think you have Waxapples pegged, they surprise you.

Glitter & Grime is an apt title for a record that is both dirty and beautiful. Guitars crunch and roar in trademark post-grunge style but are then boxed in delicious pop candy that shouldn't mesh with the racket surrounding it. Somehow the rock and the pop live in peace; in fact, they have wonderful chemistry together. "Forget You" is a pointed break-up song that sounds like Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots fronting the Foo Fighters. "Over Again" is power pop with a serrated edge. And, after that, you think that you have predicted where Waxapples would venture from there.

Not so fast.

"Cheap" echoes the New Wave thrills of vintage Blondie (or, for a more recent comparison, try No Doubt) while "Hollywood" and especially "Jackson" recall the liquor-laced L.A. punk rock of X. Towards the end of the record, Waxapples are trying on all sorts of shoes, from the spare folk of "Look Out" to the '80s spandex metal riffing of "Tush." It's all quite delightful, especially the vocal interplay of Brian and Jamie Sims Coakley.

I'm not a big fan of American Idol but i'm sure alot of ppl are. for me if the songs are nice, it's not really important of where you made your name. this year's winner is David Cook and wonder why there are ppl craze over him. here's an album that was released in 2006 prior to his joining of the AI, entitled "Analog Heart."

Es handelt sich bei diesem Song, wie schon beim letzten Ohrwurm, um ein Cover. Torn stammt ursprünglich von der amerikanischen Rockband Ednaswap; das Original könnt ihr euch hier anhören. Die Australierin Natalie Imbruglia hat aus dem ursprünglich kaum erfolgreichen Post-Grunge-Song ein Mainstream-Pop-Lied gemacht, das ganze etwa auf die doppelte Geschwindigkeit erhöht und einen Halbton hochgesetzt, und schon war es ein weltweiter Hit. :)

Als Akkorde haben wir in den Strophen F, Am, Bb7, F, Am, Bb7, in der "Überleitung" Dm, C, Am, C7, und im Refrain dreimal die Folge F, C, Dm, Bb - also nichts Außergewöhnliches bis auf den Bb7-Akkord mit der Blue Note Ab.

Wie jeder ordentliche Popsong hat auch Torn einen 4/4-Takt; auffällig ist aber der synkopische Rhythmus der akustischen Gitarre, den ich gerne als "Jack-Johnson-Rhythmus" bezeichne und den wir fast genau gleich schon bei Over My Shoulder hatten.

Sehr schön finde ich auch das E-Gitarren-Slide-Solo am Ende, das mit gerade mal fünf Noten sehr simpel ist, sich aber wunderbar in den Song einfügt. (Übrigens ist mir die Ende-Neunziger-Zeit auch sonst als die "Zeit der guten Gitarrensolos in Pophits" in Erinnerung geblieben - man denke nur an Don't Speak, Unbreak My Heart oder sogar Out Of The Dark! Schade, dass sowas im Mainstream von heute nicht mehr so verbreitet ist. :( )

Der Text handelt - wer hätte es gedacht?! - von einer gescheiterten Beziehung. Die Sängerin ist dem bekannten "Rosa-Brille"-Syndrom zum Opfer gefallen; sie hat zu spät erkannt, dass ihr Liebster nicht der ist, für den sie ihn zu Beginn hielt ("Illusion never changed / Into something real / I'm wide awake and / I can see the perfect sky is torn" und "Should have seen just what was there / And not some holy light"). Was bleibt, ist eine Mischung aus Wut, Enttäuschung und verletzten Gefühlen ("You don't seem to know or seem to care / What your heart is for" bzw. "I'm all out of faith / This is how I feel / I'm cold and I am shamed / Lying naked on the floor" und dann "I don't care, I have no luck / I don't miss it all that much").

Im Video sind Natalie Imbruglia und Jeremy Sheffield Schauspieler, die ein Paar darstellen sollen. Das ist wohl ein Bild für die Beziehung, die im Lied besungen wird - die Liebe ist nicht echt, sondern nur Attrappe. Dass es bei dem Dreh im Video außerdem ständig zu Problemen kommt und das Set schließlich ganz abgebaut wird, zeigt, dass die Illusion nicht aufrechterhalten werden kann.

Alles in allem gefällt mir der Song richtig gut, und er hat definitiv eine Menge Ohrwurmpotenzial! Viel Spaß damit! :D

Disco debut de la banda Post-Grunge inglesa, Bush.

Se formaron en 1992, con Gavin Rossdale a la cabeza (actual esposo de la ex No Doubt, Gwen Stefani), y llegando a su término en 2002, después del fracaso de su último trabajo.

Con el aquí mencionado 'Sixteen Stone', Bush de pronto se transformaron en los sucesores del Grunge más importantes en Estados Unidos, contando con un éxito arrollador: 5 singles en el Top 5 del Billboard Modern Rock Tracks y más de 6 millones vendidas de este disco, a pesar de que en su país natal el éxito era mas bien esquivo.

Me parece un gran primer album, que por cierto en su período de lanzamiento fue criticado por su parecido al 'Nevermind' de Nirvana, pero a diferencia de ese disco, 'Sixteen Stone' no cuenta con una gran inspiración Punk Rock, por eso se puede decir también que no es una copia casi directa, como se pensó por aquellos años.
Es una de las realizaciones más potentes de este grupo, tal vez siendo su mejor trabajo (aunque los siguientes también eran bastante buenos), pero acá fueron capaces de construir 12 tracks absolutamente memorables, factor que no se cumplió en el resto de sus discos.

Calificación: 8.4/10

En septiembre del año pasado comenzaron una gira con dos bandas que me gustan mucho: Three days grace y Breaking Benjamin. Debe haber sido un espectáculo maravilloso.

La salida del disco estuvo minada de infortunios y desgracias varias, desde problemas con la discográfica (lo que atrasó su salida al mercado) hasta el suicidio del hermano de Shaun Morgan (líder de la banda). Eugene (así se llamaba el hermano de Shaun) se suicida tirándose desde un octavo piso en el hotel Radisson de Rapid City, en agosto de 2007.

Se presume que el primer single del disco sería Like Suicide, pero esto perdió sentido luego de aquella desgracia, por lo que se lanzó Fake It en su lugar.

Shaun Morgan dijo una vez que sus mayores influencias vinieron de Nivana (especialmente del álbum Nevermind), Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains y Deftones, cosa que se nota bastante y que es, a mi entender, un coctel fantástico.

El arte de tapa de éste disco es una pintura de David Ho y pertenece a la serie Candice the ghost que puede apreciarse, junto con otras obras, en la página del autor.

The Down Under has become an awakened sleeping giant in the musical field, of late. Though, their main musical output has been Indie bands and Electronic masterminds, that isn't all that they have to offer. Since Silverchair has switched over to a much more mellow side of things, there's been a void of Crunchiness in Rock Music from the tiny continent. That's where Karnivool comes in. This quintet from Perth is here to let the world know that Australia has a right to claim at the Family Values tour with their album Themata. The title track, "Themata" showcases hints of Adema during their brief stint at giving out the flavor. Belting out the chorus "It's so good to see, this world is not mine!" lead singer Ian Kenny lets it be known that he can deliver with the best of them. The opening cut "C.O.T.E." is as cunningly spectacular as some of the best songs that Korn has churned out in their career. Having equal parts ambiently mellow and rippingly alternative, the song does anything but disappoint newcomers to the band. On "Shutterspeed," Kenny actually starts to vocally resemble Dryden Mitchell from Alien Ant Farm, but more with more aggression and intensity. "Sewn And Silent" being that majority of the song is composed of acoustic guitar sounds and chilled drum tracks for half of it, it has to be the softest and most emotional song on the album. A song of loveloss and torn feelings, it definitely can soften up the Alt. Metalist inside of most folks. The band also dives deeper into their Hardcore/Metal side on the instrumental track "Scarabs." Bringing the force that could make a Slipknot fan do a double take at this talented young band. Kenny and company moves in Tool/A Perfect Circle-influenced performance on "Synops." Ian croons into the mic in full fledged Maynard James Keenan-style, while the rest of the band bleeds their hearts out on their respective instruments. Though not emotional, the track is deeply moving and resonates in monumental fashion. The surefire highlight of the album is the song "L1KEL1KE." Possessing the sensibility that the times have a-changed, the band doesn't solely rely on the heavy riffs of Drew Goddard & Mark Hosking and thunderous bass/drums combo of Jon Stockman & Steve Judd for the tune. They also had a subtle sense of electronic synths akin to how Linkin Park did on their debut album. Karnivool clearly shows that Australia is not a one-trick pony of a continent/country. Giving a perfect balance of creative edge to the masses that needs it, Themata (which was the Greek plural word for the Administrative Unit of Byzantine) clear administers it out in proper order.

Scars & Souvenirs is the 3rd album that is current. i myself find them to be Nickelback sound-a-like but then they still have their own style. it's just the vocal that sounds like Chad, that's all.

Dan McMahon: Right, first things first - how are things going at the moment?

Mathew Bosher :Really well. We're doing our second and final session of pre-production and demos this week which means we'll have all the material in place to start work on our album in earnest. Also we're continuing to gig throughout this year so we're setting up some more shows now. Basically, we're just pushing all the time and want to stay really active on the scene. It's exciting having some more tracks out there in the ether. Particularly because the new demos are far more representative of us than anything we've released to date

DM: Is the style much different or is it an expansion of whats come before?

MB: It's the result of being together as a band for almost three years, refining our chops and sonic ethic, if you will, and becoming better performers. All of which you would expect after this length of time. I think we've now caught up to where we saw ourselves heading some time ago, which is tremendously satisfying.

DM: I'll bet. In terms of your sound itself, especially vocally in the past you've drawn comparisons to Jeff Buckley. Speaking personally i'd say its better described as like Maynard James Keenan with A Perfect Circle combined with Serj Tankian of System Of A Down. Is that intentional or just a happy conincidence?

MB :I appreciate all the comparisons! Thanks! I would say that they are some of my favourite singers but for me it's been a bit of a journey vocally in this band. Because my responsibilities are divided between two instruments, and because guitar is my first instrument, there is the risk of not giving either tool the attention it deserves, be it in terms of practice or their place in a song. Last year I focused more on personal vocal study. I also was very honest with myself about the capabilities of my vocals. The result of this has been good. I think what's coming out of my throat is more authentically my own; and in terms of songwriter I'm honouring my abilities a bit more. The singers you mentioned are some of the ones I listen to most, so it's understandable that there is a songwriting influence there.

DM: Are there many non musical influences, perhaps people or issues, in the bands outlook and/or style?

MB: Good question. Yes - there are certain aesthetics and other areas of art that contribute to the sound, structure and lyrical content. Most recently architecture has played an important role. As a discipline it's an excellent resource for musical inspiration and draws perhaps the starkest visual and philosophical comparison for what we've been doing with music of late. I'm not sure how far this will extend but it suits us for now.

DM: If you were given $10000 on the provision that it couldnt be used responsibly, i.e invested, saved, used to pay bills, what would you use it for?

MB :I'd buy an RC Helicopter and a ticket to Japan. Maybe a few guitar pedals...

DM:No fireman pole from your bedroom to the kitchen?

MB: Ah, one level flat bro! What am I talking about? I want a segue!

DM:So whats on the horizon for you guys? Any big gigs or events that you're playing that you fancy shamelessly plugging?

The last album from Incubus  was Morning View and the albums they have after the preceding was abit unacceptable for me. finally last week, i decide to take the risk to make my ears listen to their latest compilation. i was surprised to see that most of the tracks on the cd are instrumental. it's something new to me from them though.  

Look Alive is a live DVD and CD by the rock band Incubus. The DVD includes concert footage from the band's 2007 Light Grenades World Tour, plus personal footage shot by the band during the touring cycle and documentation of guitarist Mike Einziger's operation for extreme Carpal Tunnel syndrome.

The CD comprised of newly recorded original music interludes, scored by guitarist Mike Einziger, plus 6 additional live tracks. Tracks 1 - 10 are all instrumental, fairly minimalist (track 7 being the sole exception of not being minimalist) and some tracks are quite different to anything Incubus has previously recorded. Track 9, "Here In My Room" is a keyboard-only instrumental version of a track from the A Crow Left of the Murder album.

"Yeah, we're very happy to do that, but something has come up which has hindered the process a little" Mathew disclosed. "I've got a CD now, so that's all good" he laughs. The band are currently scheduled to support Galloping Hooves Of The Apocalypse at the Dogs Bollix on April 11th with support also coming from 2007 Rockquest winners Solomon.

Dopo un disco indipendente intitolato Wave of Popular Feeling del 1995 e prodotto sotto il nome Groundswell, il primo album della band risale al 2003 e si intitola proprio come la band stessa Three Days Grace etichetta Jive.
Il singolo principale estratto è I hate everything about you e il successivo singolo è Just like you, entrambi i singoli raggiungono le prime posizioni nelle classifiche americane e canadesi, con tanto di nomination a Nuovo Gruppo dell'Anno.

Nel 2005, Adam, il cantante del gruppo, viene ricoverato presso il CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health di Toronto) a causa di un abuso di Ossicodone cioè di una sostanza oppiacea considerata come droga e sottoposta ad uso medico solo a stretto controllo. All'interno di questo centro, vennero scritte molte delle canzoni dell'album successivo.

One-X è l'album prodotto nel 2006. Il primo singolo estratto è Animal I have become, il secondo Pain e il terzo Never Too Late. Tutti questi singoli sono strettamente legati all'esperienza non molto positiva vissuta da Adam a causa dell'abuso di sostanza stupefacenti e successivamente nel centro di riabilitazione; i titoli lo confermano.
Nell'Agosto 2007, il disco diventa di platino grazie anche al fatto che i vari singoli estratti raggiungono le prime posizioni delle classifiche americane di rock. Anche il quarto singolo, Riot, è di grande successo.

Nel Novembre 2006, Adam insieme ai suoi compagni Brad, Neil e Barry torna al CAMH per un concerto privato dedicati ai pazienti e agli studenti presenti nel centro. In questa sede racconta la sua esperienza di drogato in questi termini: "At any point I could've overdosed, for quite a few years I was seeing things, I was looking through a blurred set of eyes. I was a zombie". Il pubblico è il motivo che lo ha tenuto in vita e i tour non sono altro che una ricompensa al sistema che gli ha permesso la nuova rinascita ("The payment to a system that kept me alive"). Il tour dei Three Days Grace si svolge infatti in luoghi come centri di riabilitazione, centri di detenzione e gruppi di sostegno del Nord America, viene chiamato proprio Three Days to Change Tour.
