But even Malthus' formidable foresight was not enough to encompass the massive technological advances that then lay ahead or the unprecedented power to wreak havoc on ourselves and our planet that these advances would soon enable.  The dangers of human populations outrunning the food supply seem like child's play (even though we haven't come close to solving them) compared to more "modern" problems associated with overpopulation, such as those arising from humans outrunning the energy supply.

With each passing year, we undertake ever-more-drastic measures to keep our ever-more-crowded boat afloat.  Drilling for oil in our last remaining nature preserves and constructing dozens of new nuclear reactors are the cry of the day.  And we ain't seen nothin' yet.

When will it end?  And how?  Will the solution finally just be forced on us when we literally run out of oil and food?  Or will we invent and implement an effective anthropolicy---a policy for handling humans---before then?

We spent today at a great clinic out in the Suburbs of Delhi and it turns out the knee isn’t all that bad off. I’ve managed to tear something, but it’s not all that serious and I can keep travelling which is good news as far as I’m concerned.
But overshadowing the good news was a brilliant encounter with an old man who sat next to me while I waited for a doctor to review my MRI scans. A mix of curiosity and bad vision landed his head in my lap as he tried to read what was printed on my report. Then, with the nonchalance of a grandfather who had accompanied me to the hospital in the first place, this stranger reached for my envelope, opened it and began examining the MRI of my knee. There’s something amazing I’ve noticed only in India where a general lack of personal space meets people’s insatiable curiosity to make this sort of thing okay. It's one thing to see statements like these in online forums and blog comments, quite another when they appear in the New York Times. The article, now a couple weeks old, is Malthus Redux: Is Doomsday Upon Us, Again? by science reporter Donald G. McNeil Jr. which not only was selected for the Week in Review section of the paper but also referred to approvingly by NYT columnist and science writer John Tierney:

Before any other readers post another comment about "overpopulation" and doomsday scenarios, I suggest they take a look at my colleague Donald McNeil's excellent article on Malthusian mistakes.

I understand exaggeration and misdirection in political speech but not in science reporting, and especially not when it concerns important science topics. When I went to the trouble of cataloging odd and troubling responses to population pressure I was thinking more of pajama warriors rather than science writers in the mainstream press.

Here are McNeil's words in context:

...over the last 200 years, with the Industrial Revolution, the Transportation Revolution, the Green Revolution and the Biotech Revolution, Malthus has been largely discredited. The wrenching dislocations of the last few months do not change that, most experts say. ...

Right now, there is enough grain grown on earth to feed 10 billion vegetarians,...

Theoretically, there is enough acreage already planted to keep the planet fed forever, because 10 billion humans is roughly where the United Nations predicts that the world population will plateau in 2060. But success depends on portion control; in the late 1980s, Brown University's World Hunger Program calculated that the world then could sustain 5.5 billion vegetarians, 3.7 billion South Americans or 2.8 billion North Americans, who ate more animal protein than South Americans.

Even if fertility rates rose again, many agronomists think the world could easily support 20 billion to 30 billion people.

Anyone who has ever flown across the United States can see how that's possible: there's a lot of empty land down there. The world's entire population, with 1,000 square feet of living space each, could fit into Texas....

The parts in bold text are false and/or offered without any evidence which, given the nature of the article, is egregious.

Malthus said that a population that grows faster than its food supply is in trouble, nothing has discredited that. The UN has made no predictions of future population but rather offered a spread of projections based on a variety of possible conditions that may or may not hold in the future. And "most experts" and "many agronomists"? That's the sort of rhetorical device one expects from the pajama warriors not NYT science writers. I have never heard of an agronomist who would, with a straight face, claim "the world could easily support 20 billion to 30 billion people." Easily support?

Science writers, to have any credibility, must be aware of systems analysis and the kinds of errors that are easily made when just one part of a system is studied in isolation.

Modern industrial agriculture is part of a system in which it needs inputs like good soil (in short supply), water (also in short supply), and fossil fuel (problematic on several fronts) for transportation and fertilizer. It produces outputs like subsidence from over-pumping ground water, decrease in biodiversity from monocropping and habitat loss, pollution from pesticide and fertilizer runoff, and greenhouse gas from fossil fuels used in production and transportation. There's nothing sustainable about large scale agriculture. McNeil must know this yet fails to even mention it.

Oddly he notes the there's enough food to sustain 2.8 billion people at the North American level of consumption. But here are 6.7 billion people in the world and all of them want that level of consumption — exactly the Malthusian dilemma that McNeil is trying to dismiss in this sophomoric piece.

To wrap up, a word about fitting the population of the world into Texas with room to spare:

Among the pajama crowd this comes up again and again with Australia, Florida, France, and various other areas substituting for Texas. Responses range from ignoring it to any of several more or less colorful insults. I'll try a reasoned one.

Again, it's about systems thinking. Your house is a system. Let's assume it's 2,000 square feet (a nice size house) and hooked up to city water and sewage supplies. It's probably on a road of some sort, a road used by you to come and go to your job and by various businesses to deliver you services. All the businesses you interact with and they interact with are also systems that need space. The landfill needs space, farms need space, the sewage treatment plant needs space, .... Office buildings, shops, parking lots, hospitals, playgrounds, roads, parks, rivers, forests, lakes, mountains, hillsides — everything needs space.

Once you start portioning out all that on a per person basis, guess what? We fill up Earth and are already a bit crowded. If everyone lived like North Americans we'd need several more Earths, but all we've got is this one. That's the Malthusian dilemma in spades.

McNeil also tackles the problem of water shortages:

Water? When it hits $150 a barrel, it will be worth building pipes from the melting polar icecaps, or desalinating the sea as the Saudis do.

And if he can figure out where will the energy come from and how to mitigate the environmental damage from such projects, I'll concede the point.

 More than this, what happened to the extinction aspect of evolution in this case, if everyone else ultimately evolved from Africans, why is the African populations not dwindling on the point of extinction? Just how much time is required, it’s been about 100,000 years. In 2007, the population of Africa was 965 million, while Europe has 731 million. Of course not everyone in Europe is of European decent and the same can be said for Africa, however, most are actually of the origin of the continents –give or take a few.

Those who try to argue about AIDS playing out the role of natural selection on the African population (which is by the way, very unintelligent) —you’d have to say that Europeans and people of other races are not able to contract the virus—and everyone knows that they are just as capable as anyone else of contracting AIDS. If they were somehow evolved, as a “better developed breed”, so to speak, they’d have immunity to this OR somehow adapted in some way. I just wanted to address the stupidity before it came.

Why would one think, and be justified in thinking, that AIDS, or HIV is a man-made disease? Two very simply reasons..maybe three--besides the ones listed on the above mentioned site.

1. The fact that this virus has two strains in such a short amount of time, and it just sprouted up all of a sudden, out seemingly no where. Monkeys were discovered to have the virus parallel to the time it began to spread in the (African) human population. As many experiments that monkeys and apes have been subjected to since the breaking age of science, it is highly unlikely that scientist, all of sudden found out those animals had HIV--at least they would have noted a decline in the population much earlier than the time it took to spread in the human population.
2. The way the virus works, turning the immune system against itself, is unnatural…in its entirety. There is no other disease or virus known to do this.
3. There are occurrences of two women from China who were exposed to the HIV virus AND actually showed immunity to it.
4. Magic Johnson is alive and well (almost 20 years) and it is pubically known that he has/had HIV/AIDs.

Fishy stuff, huh? Everyone's life is affected and at risk by AIDS. Start asking questions, seeking information, and demandig answers---real answers. I've noticed how many people just take whatever the media/government feeds---much like "jumping of a cliff because someone simply told you to jump".

Right now the official figure for population is 1.3 billion people. Why does China has so many people? I know there is a traditional thought in most Chinese peoples’ head.   Because there is an old saying in China, "the more sons and grandsons the more multi-riches and honor."  So many Chinese people, especially the people with low education believe it.

Now China had been promoting the law of "Birth control" for several years.  The population growth has slowed down.  It is a good phenomenon, but China's population is still the largest in the world and the population distribution is non-uniform. The of the majority of the population is distributed along coastal cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and so on.  I am in Beijing, so I can clearly feel the danger of overpopulation, such as during traffic jams, trips to over crowded supermarkets and long ticket lines.

China had found out many ways to solve this problem, such as constructing  bigger buildings, making wider roads, planting more trees and grasses.  So I believe one day China's problem of population will not be as harmful, but more thriving and balanced.

Wait, this may not cut it anymore. Maybe 5-10 years ago? But, not today. Not in today's Calgary. Booming, growing, exploding city. I'm going to have to do better than that to satisfy my boss. Being stuck in normal rush hour traffic is not an acceptable excuse in the Calgary of today. Those at work will just tell me to leave earlier, wake up earlier. (Little do they know that I wake up real early but just have so much to do, so much to think about, so much to attempt to squeeze in before work erases my fantasies; don't get me wrong, work is pretty good and not a tyrant, but it just happens to fall immeasurably short of my dreams)

Come on, now! Think creatively! I need an out. Why is it so backed up? Come on! Yes...turn on the radio! Oh yes! Oh, please, please, please God, let there be some kind of accident. Shoot, sorry, I apologize. That didn't come out too kindly. I don't mean to wish there be a major accident for my selfish purposes. Just...just..just..well...do you know those situations when traffic is backed up and you stretch and elongate your neck to try to see far into the distance expecting some kind of incident?

Okay, how about this? Oh God, oh please, please, please God, I wish there to be a stalled vehicle blocking the turning lane, causing an insurmountable delay. So, I listen intently on the radio with unwavering focus trying to find evidence for my late arrival to work. Nothing yet. Nothing still. Still nothing! What! I need something to be reported on my route that everyone at work is familiar with. Please! Please?

If coworkers hear about an accident or a stall on my route on their radio at work, then they'll collectively nod in agreement and understanding as to why my chair remains empty. The irony is obviously not lost on me about how I'm ridiculously praying for an accident to save my life. What would God think about this? Again, as if to alleviate some of the guilt within me, I emphasize that by accident, I mean stall, or flat tire, or a truck losing its load - no bodily injuries!

I know what God thinks. He's not impressed because I'm not getting any answer. None. Sometimes God speaks through the voices of others. Nope, none. God's not on the radio. The traffic reporter listed a lengthy Christmas list of stalls, flat tires, non-functioning traffic lights, but nothing on my side of the city. Damn!

I don't need no official statistical census to tell me that Calgary is growing. Many years ago, a traffic jam like this would surely mean some accident or out of the ordinary incident somewhere, and it would be reported on the radio. These days, however, this kind of traffic is simply just volume - not worth a second of airtime.

My coworkers are not going to be impressed. What should I do, what should I do? I have a thought. Yes. I drive a standard. I am not coordinated. Whoops, I let go of the clutch too soon, and I stall. Yes. And then I shall put my hazard lights on and check under my hood acting all confused? No. No, I don't. I will just continue to drive to work inch by inch.

You don’t have to look too far these days to find tips, suggestions, programs and movements dedicated to “saving” the planet – most with good reason and good intention. But another environmental strategy, growing in popularity, smacks of a sinister agenda that has existed for generations and continues to recreate itself. That is the issue of Population Control.

According to groups like the Sierra Club (an environmental organization founded in 1892), the Population Institute (established in 1969 to address “population issues”) and the well-known Planned Parenthood (a “women’s health” organization founded in 1916) – overpopulation is responsible for a laundry list of social problems, including infant mortality, famine, poverty and, more recently, global warming and most forms of environmental damage. However, this perspective becomes suspect when most of these birth control efforts are aimed at poor women and women of colour. The so-called “Third World” women. Women very similar to you and me.

Some people (you probably know them) are always looking for someone to blame. In times of economic or employment crisis, they blame the immigrants – people like us. In today’s environmental crisis, they blame overpopulation – of people like us. They don’t blame the excessive lifestyle of Western waste.

The populaton control agenda gives these same people an excuse to advance white supremacist values over human rights. Environmentalists promote the ideology that there is a “perfect population” that the Earth can support. Not surprisingly, “perfection” goes beyond numbers – it’s about race and ethnicity too! In addition to birth control policy, this belief has impacted immigation, welfare policy, criminal law and sentencing, the treatment of First Nations groups, decisions of war and political intervention. Black women around the world have long endured forced sterilizations, illegal abortions and foreign aid with strings attached in pursuit of this “perfect population.”

In short, population control translates into a healthier planet and better living conditions for wealthy, non-melanated people and the children they are encouraged to have. It has not escaped my attention that Essence displays full-page advertisements for every imaginable birth control system while white-oriented mainstream magazines discuss fertility issues and advertise ovulation predictor kits.

In her academic paper, “Population Control and Environmental Protection: Misplaced Coercion,” Jennifer Simpson reveals the scandalous practices often tied to birth control programs: “Oral contraceptives, IUDs, Norplant and Depo-Provera, have been administered in less-developed countries even when they have been banned or untested in developed countries.”

And while our reproductive efforts are being discouraged, the fertility industry is booming. According to Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body: “The multiple births that result from these technologies point to the contradiction of a public not willing to pay the expenses of one additional child born to a welfare mother, yet willing to support seven children born to a white couple.”

Thinking about population and the environment means not thinking about the far-reaching after-shocks of slavery and colonialism. It means ignoring corporate pollution. It means not thinking about the environmental effects of military misbehaviour. It means not talking about land redistribution. Or developing a worldwide clean water system or accessible health services for everybody.

So rather than talk population problems, let’s talk environmental solutions. Let’s even dare to implement changes that impact the affluent lifestyles that are posing the real problems on this planet.

In my opinion (and I am not alone), these people argue for population control because they don’t want to share. We could all live comfortably if we worked at equitable distribution of food, land, water, money and other basic needs. It’s not a population problem. We have a consumption problem.

How can food supply be an issue in a world where food is mass-produced, packaged, and discarded after the expiry date or left to spoil? Is water an issue? Let’s limit water supply to only a few hours a day – outside of North America, many of us are used to that. Drive less, or not at all. Give up foreign fruits and vegetables. Put real money into development projects in countries where workers and resources have been exploited.

Why not focus on sharing and sustainability rather than obsess over who is having how many children? For me, the bottom line is: Talk to me about population control when we’ve exhausted all other options.

To the uninitiated, “lowest low” seems a strange thing to worry about. A few decades ago we were getting “the population explosion” drilled into us. Has the situation changed for the better since Paul Ehrlich set off the alarm in 1968 with his best seller “The Population Bomb”? Do current headlines — global food shortages, climate change — not indicate continuing signs of calamity?

Here I talk about the causes and effects of the population decline according to the NY Times article. Some of these are just hypotheses that the writer discusses which come from various sources (religious, sociological...etc).

Causes

• -high cost of living
• -infertility?
• -birth control (Pope Benedict calls it a "lack of concern for the future")
• Changes in Women's attitudes
• In Italy, children stay at home longer, get married later, get later start on having a family and tend to have less kids.
• lack of focus on gender equality (especially in the workplace) leads women to not want to have kids.

Effects

• -Economic effects--many people will be forced to work beyond retirement years
• -Immigrants may replace Europeans
• -importance of Western values and influence diminishes as young people from non-western countries will grow up and dominate the world scene

• history/cultures of specific European groups as well as ruins, art, not preserved because non-European groups populate? (more of a fear, according to the author)

What is troubling..

There seems to be a discussion happening about what the best course of action is for dealing with population decline.

Some are happy and want to encourage further population decline (eugenicists). They say it's about time countries started thinking about their populations critically to keep them steady or declining. Afterall, there aren't enough resources in the world to keep us all alive and eating 5 meals a day with 24 hr a day access to McDonald's.

Some want to encourage women to have babies, like the mayor of Laviano, Italy. He is offering Euros to women who have children. Currently, the state is also offering a 1000 euro bonus, I believe. Sound familiar? Yep, Hitler was totally into Natalism...but then again, he also didn't want people with unfavorable characteristics to have offspring...will it come to this?

Some say, rather than offering overt incentives, cultural attitudes need to change--a society's attitude toward traditional gender roles affects whether women choose to have children. The economic climate must change as well. If the cost of living is high, companies must offer a decent maternity leave (heck, they could offer paternity leave, too).

Some say do not try to do either of the above, rather prepare towns and cities for population decline. Instead of trying to immediately make people have kids, urban planners must rethink the future. For example, people may need to work longer and the economy will shift toward services rather than products. This could be bad...

Though I feel closest to the last strategy of a "hands-off" government, I also acknowledge, as Carl Haub of the Population Reference Bureau has said, "You can’t keep going with a completely upside-down age distribution, with the pyramid standing on its point. You can’t have a country where everybody lives in a nursing home.”

What do we do?

Knowing the the elites of the world want 80% of the population gone...what is your suggestion?

Mr Porritt said that the prevailing assumption of UN economists that population growth would fall as the world got richer was out of sync with the need for the human race to live within environmental limits.

So, although it is a FACT that birth rates fall as nations industrialise and develop, fraudulent claims regarding C02 mean that those FACTS just aren't good enough. Still, if he admitted that populations will grow and rise in response to their environment (like every other species) then he would be out of a job and the State would need another excuse for more regulations other the People.
