I need a band. I'm working with a really low budget, and these are the head shots that the agency sent me to work with. I'm having a really hard time choosing. They're all so priceless...

I prefer one that doesn't wear women's clothes. Or live in a halfway house for recently released pedophiles. Next!

Barracudas are razor-toothed meat eating fish. A symbol of fury. I don't see barracudas here. I see a bunch of little turds in pink Kathie Lee clearance rack blazers. I'm not feelin' this one.

One of these things is not like the other...
one of these things just doesn't belong
Can ya tell which thing is not like the others
before I finish my song?

Give up yet? It's the only one not cool enough to have a silk banana for a uniform. The jaune quadruplets are more suitable for Curious George on ice. The one in the middle can wear the smelly, gin soaked monkey costume. There. I found them a job and now I don't feel guilty about not hiring them myself. Moving on...

More like REflux. I feel my last meal coming back to haunt me when I look at this picture. It's the Weevil Knievel quints in all their polyester glory. Those collars are the same size as the wings of a small Cessna. I don't know semaphore, so it's a no-go for Chewbacca and his pubeless wingmen.

Who knew He-Man's real name was Andreas? That's a new one on me. It wouldn't surprise me if Magnus was actually Skeletor. When they're not kickin' it in Castle Grayskull, they're playing seedy dives and waiting for people with low standards to throw a few peanuts their way for squeezing out a few tunes for a kid's birthday party. Now here's the kicker... Jens is actually She-Ra. What? That chin is too weak to be a man's.

This is what greets you at the gates of heaven. Hey... the jubilee must go on in the afterlife, and they didn't spend all that money on business cards to sit around twiddling their thumbs on a cloud somewhere while the other post-mortem bands suck up all the good gigs. There are still parties in eternity, and these footless floating cheese sticks are always available for hire. Aaaaand they'll continue to stay that way. No deal.

HA! I found Monroe the annoying neighbor from Too Close For Comfort! I think I just won the game of Missing Celebrity Bingo. With the addition of Joyce DeWitt, whom I found rummaging in a dumpster last week, that makes five in a row. Wow... clever hiding spot, sandwiched in the middle of Bob Newhart, Greg Brady, and the extra from McMillan and Wife.

Meet The Lonesome Losers, Strike N' Spare's champion team of 1978. They're looking to pick up a few spares... dollars, that is... and a little booze and a pack of cigarillos to split if you happen to have some handy. They spent all their championship bowling earnings on hookers and slot machines, and will do just about anything to pay the rent. They don't know how to play any instruments. Hmmm...

No. There will be no sombreros at this party, so I don't see this working out. You might want to take your tight asses and maracas to a bar near the border. Ole!

Too bad the other two ladies didn't get there before they ran out of pretty white satin shirts and ruffled skirts. If they were going to be late anyway, the least they could've done was take a few extra minutes to shave.

Uhhhhh.... no.

NO.

Yeah... 'Simsalabim' is actually a witchcraft term. It means, "please shrink my abnormally large cranium so chicks will dig me." You're either missing some eye of newt, or it just flat out didn't work. Try a few ten gallon hats. Or, as a last resort, a few paper bags with eye holes cut out. But then again, some chicks like elongated skulls...

I was expecting to see boys in teddies. Instead, I get human candy canes in a field of dandelions. I'm very disappointed.

I believe you're lost. The Dr. Who set is to your right. You better hurry because they started the auditions for mutant extras ten minutes ago.

And you thought bling originated in the hip-hop movement. Pshaw. These guys wrote the book on gaudy and pretentious. Obviously they're better than you, because they wear sequin jumpsuits and you don't. They're ugly as sin, but that's beside the point.

Not to be confused with the Keebler Elfs. Ron Howard and Malachi from Children of the Corn were not Keebler Elfs. That's how you can tell the difference. Those guys make cookies. These guys hang out in the woods and commune with rodents. Those guys are rich. These guys are hoping I'll hire them to do my shindig so they can eat tomorrow. I can't do that, but I CAN point them in the direction of a good soup kitchen.

Tres Blah. The cheese always stands alone. Why is that? Maybe because he's the most talented toe on the disfigured foot. He's not different... he's special.

Bumblebees really ARE attracted to hideous shirts. Here's a tip: Don't let a colorblind transient be your wardrobe coordinator. I know he's willing to work for a hoagie and a pint of vodka, but it's seriously hurting your bottom line. Better to shell out a little extra and get someone semi-knowledgeable. Those threads won't even score you a spot mopping up party hurl.

Bloody hell. I'm reaching the bottom of the barrel now...

Those uniforms were made out of old divan slipcovers. No.

Sten-akes. Stenkes. Stinks. Gotcha.

It's not a Freddie Mercury look-alike contest. It's a party. Put on some t-shirts and jeans and we'll talk.

Perfect. I'm hiring you just because you have the best name ever. I love your schytty hair. I love your schytty uniforms. I can't wait to tell my guests that I got the Schytts. And they're gonna eat, drink, and get the Schytts too. They're gonna stay out too late and get in deep Schytt. Then the Schytt's gonna hit the fan. But nobody's gonna care because this party's gonna be the schytt. I just wanna say that word one more time.

Schytt.

I've really no idea how I came across the Arrogants a few years ago. In any case, they no longer exist, and as a result, their entire discography can be downloaded for free.

The Arrogants' Jana Heller has a voice that seems tailor-made for Belle & Sebastian or Camera Obscura twee pop, and yet I wouldn't say that the Arrogants are pure twee. They've got one really spectacular song, "Don't Die Before Your Day," that's somewhat reminiscent of Rilo Kiley's "Paint's Peeling."

Don't Die Before Your Day (mp3)

And now, the postscript --

Next week is CMJ 2008, during which hundreds of bands descend upon the music scene here in the city and every music fan's equilibrium is thrown off after attending a show in which the headlining band starts playing at 4am. As some of my readers are aware, I'm a full-time student outside of music blogging. As a result, I have plans to attend only one-fourth of a CMJ show next week; moreover, I have been juggling, forestalling and cancelling concertgoing plans all semester in an effort to accommodate the various commitments that I have in "real life." In short, anticipate delays in concert photo & recap posts, and don't be surprised by the dearth of posts of the brevity thereof in the next few weeks. At the very least, I'll do my best to update the "lyric spotlight" at the bottom of the left sidebar, but my iPod has been broken for the last month and a half so my listening to music has been severely reduced.

Ben Folds has always been a favorite of mine since freshman year of college. His music is both serious and sweet; reality delivered with a smile.

"You Don't Know Me" features a little vocal accompaniment from the superstar-in-her-own right, Regina Spektor. Straight off his latest album, Way to Normal, here is Ben Folds with your song of the day:

Game - Gotta Take Your Love

Instead it's pop that's reminiscent of both Teenage Fanclub and Self's toy instrument album, Gizmodgery, written and performed by a talented multi-instrumentalist with a taste for the eclectic. Tokumaru's music is consistently surprising, sometimes sweet but never sappy, and he even throws in a couple of tracks with a distinctly county western flavor ("Sanganichi" and "La La Radio.") Definitely recommended for indie pop fans, and for anyone seeking music out of the ordinary. Standout cuts: "Parachute," "Green Rain," "Button" and "Hidamari."

It was roughly 4 am when I first caught this band's tunes floating through my external acoustic meatus (ear canal.) It was one of those songs that stops you mid-dance twist to hear more, "I got a gnome in the backyard, I put him right on the x mark, he's supposed to show me where the money is, hey wont you show me where the money is."

The Spinto Band has been pushing out handfuls of indie pop-ish tunes since I was (ahem) 12. They are back on the road promoting the latest album, Moonwink. Check them out on Saturday, October 18th, 2008 at The Music Hall of Williamsburg, the show is guaranteed to get your tail feather shaking, you might even just catch yourself clapping along.
