From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Wednesday 20th August):

Birth

1948. Robert Plant (do I really have to say Led Zeppelin?) born in West Bromwich, England.

On Tour

1996. Whitney Houston gets £ 1.3 million for a 90 minute performance at a banquet held by the Sultan Of Brunei.

In Court

1981. Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) appears at Kingston Crown Court to face three charges - possessing cocaine, possessing cannabis and cultivating cannabis. He's found guilty of possessing cocaine and fined £ 200 but acquitted on both of the other charges. The court case follows a police raid on Lynott's house in Kew Road, Richmond in November 1979. It took the jury two and three-quarter hours to reach its verdicts. Speaking to reporters outside the court, Lynott said he was very concerned about the effect the guilty verdict might have on his ability to tour the United States. Lynott had told the court that he'd given up smoking cannabis after the birth of his daughter, Sara, almost three years ago. he also said that he was unaware of possessing any cocaine. The jacket, in which two packets of the drug had been found, had been loaned to a friend and only returned the day before the raid.

In Hospital

1994. Sound engineer Tim Warhurst falls from a lighting gallery during rehearsals for Take That's appearance at London's Docklands Arena. He is flown by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital where he is found to be suffering from head and spinal injuries that may leave him paralysed for life.

1975. Musikladen (ZDF, Germany) 20. 10cc; Bay City Rollers; Johnny Cash; Rubettes; The Cats; Paper Lace; ABBA; Roger Glover; Creedence Clearwater Rivival (Oldie); The Seekers. Here's 10cc with "I'm Not In Love". 4m 06s.

Death

1971. George Jackson, one of the Soledad Brothers, is shot dead by warders when he tries to escape from San Quentin Prison in California. Jackson, 29, had served 11 years for the theft of $ 70 and was currently in jail awaiting trial for the alleged killing of a prison warder during his sentence which was served at Soledad Prison. His court hearing was scheduled for August 23rd but he decided not to wait and escape instead. During the escape attempt, two other prisoners were shot dead by guards. Two prisoners had their throats slit by those escaping and a warder was stabbed to death. The event is captured for posterity by Bob Dylan in the song, "George Jackson".

I discovered this on youtube, and could not help but start laughing.

This post is more about the music video than the music itself (which is not that interesting or recent). Unfortunably I did not find the names of the people doing the cover and acting in the video.

You can watch the original version by Robert Palmer (1985) here: Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love

Robert Palmer's inapproachable girls, dressed in black, playing instruments (though it is clear that these models are there only for the show) are converted to girls in a chemical laboratory and made ridiculous. Here, women wearing exactly the same dress are a common sight, and the singer imitates Palmer's 30's style with tie and white shirt by wearing a white lab coat.

Palmer's attractive girls suggest the fact that no man could ever reach them in their kind of aristocracy, if that is the right word. On the other side, the attractiveness of women in lab clothes is limited, I have to confess. Even the moves of the girls match the original and thereby add "authenticity" to the cover. Some elements of the lyrics are kept and transferred to the chemical context, especially:

"It's closer to the truth to say you can't get/add enough"

It is not common covering / parodizing music and video at the same time. The style of Palmer's video has been cited by other artists as can be read on wikipedia. Also, the video hints at the works of Patrick Nagel, an artist who did drawings of women in a similar style and could be a possible influence to these music videos.

As I am no more much into chemistry, I can only summarize what is described in the lyrics of the cover:

A substance is supposed to deprotonate (= lose its hydrogen). To achieve this, a base must be added, in solution there are OH- -ions (these are addicted to protones, pulling them like magnetic) so the reaction (in solution) should be:

H₃O+ + OH- >> 2H₂O

That is a kind of neutralisation, and if it is finished, the pH should be around 7 as no more protones/charge should be there. As the song title implies, it's resistant to base, this reaction does not happen and the desperate researcher adds huge amounts of base pushing the pH to the limit.

As you see, music can lead to various other topics at the same time like chemistry or history of art.

It is a visual art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in parallel in the late 1950s in the United States. The coinage of the term Pop Art is often credited to British art critic/curator, Lawrence Alloway in an essay titled The Arts and the Mass Media, although the term he uses is "popular mass culture" Nevertheless, Alloway was one of the leading critics to defend mass culture and Pop Art as a legitimate art form. Pop art is one of the major art movements of the twentieth century. Characterized by themes and techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising and comic books, pop art is widely interpreted as either a reaction to the then-dominant ideas of abstract expressionism or an expansion upon them. Pop art, like pop music, aimed to employ images of popular as opposed to elitist culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture. It has also been defined by the artists' use of mechanical means of reproduction or rendering techniques that downplay the expressive hand of the artist. Pop art at times targeted a broad audience and often claimed to do so.

Much of pop art is considered very academic, as the unconventional organizational practices used often make it difficult for some to comprehend. Pop art and minimalism are considered to be the last modern art movements and thus the precursors to postmodern art, or some of the earliest examples of postmodern art themselves.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Tuesday 19th August):

Birth

1943. Billy J. Kramer born William Howard Ashton in Bootle, Lancashire.

On Tour

1965. As The Beatles arrive at Houston Airport in Texas, 5,000 fans break through police lines and rush towards their chartered plane. Luckily, a catering truck is backed up to the aircraft and the boys are ferried to safety. Promoter Bill Weaver said that the security force assembled to ensure the group's safety was larger than that used by President Johnson when he was in the city. Sell out audiences of 12,000 at each of tonight's shows will earn The Beatles £ 30,050. The city authories, who own the Coliseum where the concerts are taking place, have demanded a $ 10,000 (£ 3,500) damage bond from the promoter.

In Shops

1981. Neil Tennant meets Chris Lowe for the first time in an electronics shop in London's Kings Road. Finding a common interest in dance music, the pair start writing together, eventually forming a duo called West End. That name soon gets dropped in favour of Pet Shop Boys, a name they had jokingly used to refer to some friends who worked in an Ealing pet shop.

In The Press

1976. Glasgow's Evening Times runs a headline, "Ramones In Teenage Glue Death Outrage". The paper claims that the band advocates the habit of sniffing glue. A local member of parliament, James Dempsey, tries to have the band's first album banned from Scottish stores.

Guests: Argent; Harry Chapin; David Clayton Thomas; 'Mama' Cass Elliot; The Everly Brothers; The Isley Brothers. Here's Argent with "Hold Your Head Up".

Death

1996. Gospel-rock drummer Steve Marsh (Elim Hall, One Hundred Days) dies of liver cancer, first diagnosed in June.

Babble

The first thing I have to do today, is apologize. Somehow, I managed to put today's blog (i.e. Tuesday 19th August) up in place of yesterday's. I didn't realise until late last night and decided to leave it for the morning. So, here I am correcting a rather idiotic mistake.

Apart from that, there's little to report today. The Ballerina Ballroom Blog is getting a lot of interest. Whether that's as a result of my flyer and poster blitz of Nairn remains to be seen. I have started to feature the regular bands that played there and have reworked it so it's easier to navigate. The trouble is it just keeps giving me more work! All the video clips I've added to it will now have to be added to the index of clips on the Rockmine TV pages. No rest for the wicked. Oh well, I better get on...

In Custody

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Saturday 16th August):

Birth

1945. Kevin Ayers born in Herne Bay, Kent.

On Tour

1997. The Prodigy stop their gig at Leeds V97 Festival when they see fans being crushed in front of the stage. Keith Flint and Maxim jump into the pit to help security pull fans to safety. Two fans are hospitalised but Leeds City Council praise the actions of the band in helping to avert a major tragedy.

In Court

1999. Thides Leasing Corporation file a $ 158,000 lawsuit against The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, claiming that the purple one has yet to pay for a tour bus used by him between May and October 1998. The leasing company also claims that the bus was booked for another 7 months but unused. During that time, they were unable to use the bus for any other clients. $ 42,000 is being sought for touring time and a further $ 116,000 for unpaid fees and lost revenue for the 7 months idle time.

In Hospital

1989. Pete Townshend impales his hand on the tremolo arm of his guitar during the final song of The Who's gig at the Tacomadome in Tacoma, Washington. He is rushed to hospital but surgeons find he has escaped any damage.

On Television

Sorry, there's no TV clip today. I've been trying to search YouTube on a laptop with mobile broadband and there's just not enough bandwidth. I'll have something online tomorrow.

Death

1938. "King Of The Delta Blues", Robert Johnson dies "outside" Greenwood, Mississippi, aged 27. On August 13th, Johnson played his last recorded gig at the "Three Forks" juke joint. Many believe that after playing the owner gave Johnson a glass of poisoned whiskey for having seduced his wife. Here's a copy of the death certificate obtained in 1996:

Babble.

I hate pipe bands! Normally I manage to keep clear of them but I think every one of them in the North East of Scotland tried to torment me this afternoon. About 5 p.m., Nairn was invaded by dozens of them, skirling and drumming. What the Hell am I doing here.

I reckon there are only two people up here who could cope with the cacophony. One of the workmen in last week had left his tobacco tin on a ledge in the ballroom. His cigarettes didn't just contain tobacco but some herbal remedy or other. Anyway, two kids rode their bicycles into the ballroom to ask what was going on and while one was asking all sorts of sensible question, the other nicked the tin. Some teenagers are having fun this week!

Anyway, that's enough for now. I'm meant to be watching a film. I'll be back to normal tomorrow. One good thing is that I won't be driving up here all the time any more. I will, of course, keep the Ballerina Ballroom Blog going.

Maybe it's me being here but the rain has stayed away and is giving Nairn its first dry Highland Games in three years. It's a quick visit to get flyers passed out in various places in town and what I'd like to call "posters" for the blog but they're nothing more than A4 sheets that I'm hoping will get input from anyone that sees them.

It's also a great opportunity for you to stop me in the street and tell me some of your stories or give me advice on how to get a better blog experience up. Okay, I know the answer to that one - TIME! I really will get round to adding some of the gig adverts, pop columns from The Northern Scot and pictures of the North East bands that played here.

Seriously, if you want to, just stop and say hello. You probably can't miss me. One of the women in landbrokes (honest, I wasn't betting but asking about their old shop) said she thought John Lennon had walked in. If that isn't enough of a give away I'll also be carrying a silver carrier bag full of flyers. Of course, I may not be carrying it if I get rid of them all but I digress.

Failing that, you'll find me in the library for some time before they shut staring at the microfiche reader and getting the dates for 1967 that are missing from yesterday's listing. Please don't call me John, my name's Roy!

Talking of the pop columns, there's one fantastic piece around the time that Cream played the Ballerina. Eric Clapton had given an interview to one of the music papers in which he decried the fans in Scotland. On reading it, or more likely hearing of it, Albert Bonici, the promoter defiantly stated that he'd make sure Clapton never played here again! Little did he realize the status Eric would achieve.

Okay, that's it for now. I'll see you in town or you can catch up with the missing dates later.

The usual blog will be up later in the day. I'm in Nairn doing some local publicity for my Ballerina Ballroom blog. It's nothing more than getting some posters up and flyers distributed but because I really want to hear from the locals that attended the ballroom, I need to let them know.

It's a bit weird. There's a lot going on with Tilda Swinton's "Ballerina Ballroom, Cinema Of Dreams" and the Nairn Highland Games. Two completely disparate audiences in many ways both mixing in this small town. Slightly surreal but great!

So, I hope you'll forgive me. I've way too much to do just now. I'm going back to my microfiche reader and the missing listings of the bands that played the Ballerina. The normal blog will be up later, along with anymore gossip I uncover.

Björk tends to arrange her songs around heavy electronic beats and sound effects. But her pieces do not lose their magic when stripped down to nearly classical arrangements.

Unravel, arranged for just cembalo and voice, it ressembles classical art songs like those of Franz Schubert. Yet, her voice sounds much more natural than those of classical singers.

Yoga, arranged for string quartett (actually eight instruments are playing, but it seems to me that they are just doubled) and voice, it ressembles classical chamber music.

Damn. Is it possible to have forgotten about Michael Jackson? I won't say that I necessarily blacked out the King of Pop, but he's definitely been in the back of my mind for a minute. It's a shame that someone who defined pop music for more than decade has been relegated to the shadows of the public conscience. But throw "Billie Jean" or "Thriller" on the Hi-Fi and people will inevitably submit to the epitome of pop genius.

While anxiously awaiting the start of Michael Phelps latest ridiculous feat, we decided to throw on a couple on-demand Michael Jackson videos to pass the time. The highlight for me was "The Way You Make Me Feel" one of the gems from Bad, a cassette I begged my mom to play in the car every time we took a road trip when I was six. She got so sick of that record...but I still know all the lyrics. Check out the video, imagine yourself approaching a woman like this:

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Friday 15th August):

Birth

1951. Hard rocker (Captain Beyond, Armaggedon) turned one-hit balladeer ("What You Can't Do For Love") turned million selling songwriter ("The Next Time I Fall") turned musical actor ("The Rat Pack") Bobby Caldwell born in Manhattan, New York.

On The Road

1970. Derek McEwen, 32 year-old co-promoter of the Yorkshire Pop, Blues & Jazz Festival goes missing only hours after the event is abandoned because of bad weather. His car is spotted later in the morning on a Yorkshire/Lancashire motorway. Along with the other promoter, Brian Highley, it's thought that McEwen shares a loss of £ 12,000 on the event. A police search is later mounted of the moors near Scammonden Bridge close to his last sighting.

In Chains

1967. 19 year old telephonist, Deirdre Meehan, arrives outside Buckingham Palace at 3.30 p.m. and proceeds to chain herself to the railings. She then tells onlookers that she doesn't have a key for the set of handcuffs that she's used. After 20 minutes standing in the rain, a police van pulls up and she's quickly released before being ordered home. Deirdre and her 20 year old flat mate, Pat Cameron, have just returned from delivering a letter of protest to Prime Minister Harold Wilson while he was holidaying on the Isles Of Scilly. The girls are protesting at the order to deport two Australian members of The Bee Gees from the U.K.

In Custody

1997. Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian Rosenfield is arrested after breaking into the New York Yankees' training camp at Legend's Field in Tampa, Florida. He and his girlfriend, 23 year old Angela Roberts, are charged with burglary and grand theft after being caught on video trying to carry a large foam mat bearing the team's logo to their car. The couple are released on bail of $ 7,500 each after spending 6 hours in jail. Rosenfield later explains that he's been a life-long Yankees fan and while he's sorry he did have a great time running around the bases. He blamed the prank on too much wine.

On Television

1997. Rockpalast (WDR, Germany) Beck; Foo Fighters; Ash; Pavement; Veruca Salt (11Th Bizarre-Festival Köln, Butzweiler Hof). Here's Beck with "Derelict". 4m 50s.

Death

1984. Norman Petty, Buddy Holly's manager and record producer dies in Lubbock Texas, aged 57. He ceased to be Holly's manager in 1958 after disagreements over songwriting royalties (Petty claimed a percentage of all Holly's royalties) and Buddy's marriage. That didn't stop him continuing to re-release material and milk the legend of his client up to his death.

Babble

It's finally over! I gave up! After another fruitless day in Nairn trying to find last minute premises for my rock memorabilia exhibition, I realised it was turning into a waste of time.

By the time I'd got back to the office in the evening, I'd decided to get a new blog up. One for the Ballerina Ballroom and all the bands that played there. So far I've got a full listing for 1966 and half of 1967 along with period clips of some of the biggest names that played there. I say some because the real gem I discovered was a clip of The Poets from Shindig! A must-see if you're even vaguely interested in the British Beat Boom of the mid sixties.

I'm hoping to add a selection of adverts and pics of the Scottish bands that gigged there. All I've got to do is get them scanned and up. What I really want though is feedback from the folk that went to the ballroom. That's where the real social history in this lies. The blog's late up today as I've been working on that and also flyers to get in the Ballerina during the film festival which starts this afternoon.

I'd like to think of the blog as a virtual fringe event. You can check it out for yourselves here.

Strangely, the highlight yesterday was probably sitting in a wine bar in Nairn with a guy who was giving the gossip on what REALLY goes on in this sleepy wee town in the North of Scotland. Trouble is, I'm not sure I believe any of it. Think I'll stick to what I know - sex and dogs and rock 'n' roll.

1967

This year is incomplete. I've been relying on The Northern Scott for listings of Albert Bonici's events but they missed out all the Ballerina gigs until May 1967. Since then, I've discovered the Nairnshire Telegraph which did list everything. The first part of 1967 will be up as soon as possible. Anyway, until then, enjoy what's here.

May 05	The Alan Price Set plus The T-Set. The clip above comes from the German TV show "Beat Club" and features Alan Price performing "Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear".

July 07 Cream plus Newton's Theory with its Go-Go Girls. The gig was cancelled when the van carrying the band's equipment failed to turn up.

July 10	Cream return to play their concert. The rare footage above is from the Paris Pop Festival staged last month, the track is "We're Going Wrong" and shows the band at the peak of their career.

July 21	Pink Floyd. "See Emily Play" was climbing the charts and here the band are miming to it on a Belgian TV show.
July 28	Gino Washington and The Ram Jam Band plus The Copy Cats

August 18	The Small Faces - concert cancelled.
August 31	Zoot Money and his new group Dantalion's Chariot plus The T-Set

December	08	The Troggs plus The Throb. Here are the Troggs with their original version of "Love Is All Around" which got to number 5 in October. The promo film is typically surreal for the time but gives great glimpses of the band on stage and in transit to gigs.

December	15	Symon Dupree. Ok, you and I both know that it should be Simon Dupree but the adverts carry a "y". Here he is with The Big Sound performing "Kites" which hit the top ten last month. The video's a bit jumpy but it does show exactly how the band were on stage.
December	22	Cash Boutique Queen For 1967. Grand Final
December	25	Aberdeen Students' Charities' Campaign present Their Xmas Beatnik Ball with The Circle plus The T-Set

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Thursday 14th August):

Birth

1941. David Crosby born David Van Cortland in Los Angeles.

On Tour

1965. Composer Leonard Bernstein takes his two children to see The Beatles rehearse for tonight's "Ed Sullivan Show". The moment the group walked onstage the fans erupted and it was impossible to hear any of the songs. Bernstein later told reporters, "I think it's shocking because they're so good and I didn't have a chance to hear them".

In Custody

1970. Stephen Stills is arrested after being found crawling through a San Diego motel in an incoherent state. He is later released on $ 2,500 bail.

In Hospital

1983. Joey Ramone requires emergency brain surgery after being viciously kicked in a New York street fight by Seth Micklaw, member of punk band Sub Zero Construction. The fight, outside Johnny's house, was over his girlfriend Cynthia "Roxy" Whitney. Arriving back at his house in a limo, Ramone saw his girlfriend and confronted them both. A brief fist fight followed before Micklaw got Ramone on the ground and started kicking him with his steel toe-capped boots. Police attending the scene tell Johnny to seek urgent medical help but he refuses. He collapses soon after and is rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital where he undergoes four hours of surgery to remove blood clots from the brain.

On Television

1971. Disco (ZDF, West Germany)	6. Midlle Of The Road; Susan Shirley; Mungo Jerry; Frumpy; J. Bastos; Status Quo; Ireen Sheer; McGuiness Flint; The Who; Drafi Deutscher. I decided to go for two clips today. The first is Status Quo's, "Tune To The Music" in which Francis Rossi makes absolutely no attempt to get near the mic when miming. The other is Frumpy with "Life Without Pain".

Death

1988. Robert Calvert (Hawkwind) dies of a heart attack at his home in Margate.

Babble

It's an early start today. Well, the blog's not usually up this early. I'm heading north again to Nairn. Having found the solicitor that handles the shop across from the Ballerina Ballroom Cinema Of Dreams Festival, I did expect to hear from him yesterday. As I didn't, I think the best thing is to go see the man in person.

If I can get something sorted, I'll have to go into hyperdrive to get back up and hung for tomorrow but I'll just have to see what happens. I think if I could get open for Saturday that would be fine as it's the Highland Games in Nairn and the town should be mobbed. Whether any of those attending are even interested in rock memorabilia is another matter. As usual, I'll keep you posted.

I'm trying to think of a succinct argument for why I love this song so much, and I'm wishing I were 15 so that loving it would be legitimate and also so I wouldn't be a creep for thinking that the boys (especially the youngest, whoops) are all adorable. Impossible. Fuck it, Jonas Brothers FTW:

April 07 - The Wild Flowers plus a special event for the Mod Man - prizes for The Miniest Shirt. My guess is that tonight's band was actually The Wilde Flowers, who would see one member from this line-up join Soft Machine and the others form Caravan. December	08 - The Troggs plus The Throb. Here are the Troggs with their original version of "Love Is All Around" which got to number 5 in October. December	15 - Symon Dupree. Ok, you and I both know that it should be Simon Dupree but the adverts carry a "y". Here he is with The Big Sound performing "Kites" which hit the top ten last month. The video's a bit jumpy but it does show exactly how the band were on stage.

December	25 - Aberdeen Students' Charities' Campaign present Their Xmas Beatnik Ball with The Circle plus The T-Set
