Of all the traits my son possesses, the one I find most fascinating (daunting, terrifying) is that h

Of all the traits my son possesses, the one I find most fascinating (daunting, terrifying) is that he has no fear. He will climb anything, jump off anything, jump over or crawl under, run headlong into the wind, laugh with pure joy while hurtling through space on great big roller coasters. When he is hurt, he cries from pain but not fear of that pain, which means he cries for a shorter period of time and is more easily calmed.

An observer once commented that this was the sign of a very secure person. I don't think that's untrue. I do believe most fear is learned, and that we've done much in his first six years to create a world that is not scary for him, seem uncontrollable or unpredictable. Mostly, we just hold on tight watching him. He didn't earn the nickname "Danger Dan" because he's a scaredy-cat.

One thing I've noticed is that there are some children in his life whom he reacts to differently. They are the spark to his dynamite, for lack of a better word. With most kids he's pretty normal in his behavior, but there are a few who bring out the daredevil in him. Repeatedly. Last summer he had a peaceful 6 weeks at preschool camp until one child returned from another camp. Then, my son got in 'time out' every day for the last 3 weeks of summer for doing crazy stunts, etc.

So, we observed. During the school year we noticed that a few kids (including the summer-camp child) were being mentioned as co-conspirators in his (mis)adventures, some named by teachers, though not always. We worked to role-play and teach him that one should not always make that arm-fart when one's friends insist it would be funny even though the teacher said it's quiet time. Things got a little better. A little.

Then, comes this summer, his first in 'real' camp. We agree to carpool with one of Danno's 'sparks', who happens to live nearby and with whom carpooling is very convenient for both families. Besides, these two kids really enjoy playing with each other. We also went on a camping trip with another of his 'sparks'. What I realize now is that this gave us some really good opportunity to observe the dynamic between Danno and his 'sparks'.

What I saw was this: These are both children whom are the opposite of Dan in their fear factor. One is deeply insecure, even for a 6 year old. The other is really quite timid when you get past the bravado. Both seem to have an odd fascination with my son, seeming to challenge him to ever more dangerous activities, watching intently as he does them with glee. Most importantly, that it really bothers them when Danno rises again and again to the challenge without hesitation.

That's when I saw it. They're afraid. They're deeply envious and at the same time fascinated by the fact that he's not afraid. And they *want* him to be afraid just like they are, want it in a very jealous and almost vindictive way. Want to say 'see, that's how it feels to be afraid. See, you're just as scared as the rest of us.' They want him to be intimidated and stilled.

Now I see what we must teach him: We must show him this in people, how to recognize it, understand it, and most importantly to guard against it. We've also got to protect him from this, too, as he learns, because his experience and risk judgment skills are that of a 6 year old not a 36 year old. These children aren't alone, nor are they the only 'sparks' he will encounter in his life. It's our job to give him the skills to navigate his world, ground him in values that will serve him well, and give him a secure place from which to make those wondrous leaps. Because the only thing we really do have to fear is fear itself.

Polish your physique with the mansion set.

Polish your physique with the mansion set.

On May 15, 2007, Exercise TV and Dragonfly Productions released an exercise DVD starring Kendra Wilkinson, Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt. Yes, those would be the "Girls Next Door" and Playboy Hugh M. Hefner's personal, live-in, frolicksome threesome. The video manages to capture the vibrance of the girls while also being suprisingly relaxing. Holly's lulling tone, Kendra's throaty giggle and Bridget's "everygirl" vibe put you at ease and make you feel as if you are simply stretching and squatting with the girls as opposed to being put on the spot in a harsh environment with an unfriendly, self-important instructor. The DVD features "Holly's Sexy Silhouette Shape-up", "Bridgette's Boot Camp Challenge" and "Kendra's Hip-Hop Romp".

Each girl has a different approach to her segment. Holly, who I consider the classic starlet type of the group, demonstrates an aerobic workout with simplistic moves. She brings a blonde exuberance to what are considered by most to be "tried and true" exercises.

Bridget calls her method of work-out the "butt-and-gut".She admittedly focuses so much on her butt and abs that she often leaves out any leg or arm moves. She considers hers a military style routine. (Hence her camo exercise ensemb.) Her segment on the video emphasizes the abs and her major in Communications shows as does her professionalism. On the DVD as in life, she has a very likeable quality and sells it well without seeming dense. Bridget has been called-out by some as being a bit chubby which may explain why she is the only girl to cover her mid-section while exercising. (It may also explain recent photos of a much thinner, but not necesarily prettier Bridget.)

Suprise, suprise. Kendra's contribution to all of this is a segment of booty dancing and another of martial art punches. Her accompanying interview does little to her advantage. She comes across as niave and obtuse. That said, she is definitley the most fit of the three and works out every day to counter-act her football game beers and nightly nacho habit.

After doing the routines I was slightly sore, especially the next day. This, however, isn't saying much. Once an exercise fanatic it had been a while since I had any kind of a work out other than sex (By the way, Holly's main way of staying in shape). Not exactly cutting-edge, the girls' techniques and presentations bring something different to the fitness table. Their positive "bunny" attitudes, not to mention physiques provide a plentitude of inspiration to say the least. Despite the lack of innovation or realization of the work out clothing line mentioned by the girls, I am very supportive of and hopeful for further output from the girls. Although the loss of momentum makes further productions seem unlikely, I'm keeping my ears crossed!

Holly's interview from the DVD:

Just because the exercise clothing line touted by the girls failed to come to fruition doesn't mean you can't kick every element of your workout into Playmate mode. Here, just a few of the active wear pieces offered on PlayboyStore.com.

#5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Playmates Toys, 1988-1997)

I had forgotten just how awesome these toys were. Man, looking at the line up here, it brings back so many memories of TMNT toys I owned and my friends owned. Of course, at the core of any decent TMNT collection you have the original versions of the Turtles themselves. Splinter is optional, I never cared for the character or the figure. Sadly, despite being my favorite character, I never was able to get my hands on an original Raphael and had to settle for Breakfightin' Raphael.

Besides Raph, I never got my hands on Shredder either. I remember going to K-Mart, Tons o' Toys, Hills, and Roses all the time (this was before the days of Wal-Mart, Target and Toys R Us in my town) and constantly looking for Shredder. Could never find him. Until one day... One day in K-Mart, there was a huge row of Turtle figures and I found the ONE Shredder they had. I had it in my hand, I had parental purchasing confirmation and then, then I heard some kid talking his mom about never finding a Shredder figure and that he wanted one. Well, my heart grew three sizes that day when I heard those familiar Shredder Blues playin'. Out of the kindness of my heart, I walked up to the boy and told him he could have the one I had picked up. Darn. Now I gotta go search eBay for Shredder!

Although Raphael is my favorite Ninja Turtle, the original Michaelangelo is my favorite TMNT toy. I guess it goes back to orange being my favorite color, plus the way his left arm is posed, he was perfect to throw into my WWF ring and make use of the flying elbow drop as his finisher! Those four original figures are just awesome. They captured just the right amount of attitude with their pupil-less eyes and snarls and grimacing, just before the series got all wacky and gimmicky and decidedly more cartoonish (yes, I know it was based on the cartoon, but they took it to extremes later on!).

Another great series was their Mutatin' Turtles, where you could stick their limbs into their shell, flip their head, and they looked like actual turtles. Usagi Yojimbo also deserves praise thanks to his legs being perfect to use the super kick as his finisher in my version of the WWF.

The series would go from totally awesome to totally awful once every new series pretty much featured almost exclusively Raph, Mike, Leo, and Don dressed up in various costumes and gimmicks (policeman, punk rocker, clown, astronaut, superhero, weightlifter, Universal Monsters, Star Trek, robots, etc).

Favorite Figures: Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Shredder, Foot Soldier, Bebop, Rocksteady, Casey Jones, Ace Duck, Usagi Yojimbo, Leatherheard, General Traag, Baxter Stockman, Metalhead, Breakfightin' Raphael, Double Barreled Plunger Gun, Muckman, Triceraton, Zak the Neutrino, King Lionheart, Super Swimmin' Raph, Mutatin' Leonardo

#4

WWF Figures (Hasbro, 1990-1994)

I didn't own a whole bunch of these guys, but the few I did have, I loved just the same. I had the wrestling ring (the TRUE battleground for all of my action figures), so I was good to go. I stopped buying them probably around '92 or so, the same time I lost interest in buying new Joe toys, so I was lucky enough to miss out on the whole "New Generation" line of figures they were about to bring in.

About '92, I was more into the Toy Biz Marvel/X-Men lines. As much as I loved the characters, a major drawback to the WWF Hasbro line was their lack of mobility. Sure, they all had their special move, but beyond those, they were just a hunk of plastic that couldn't move. Points of articulation had begun to win out.

Still, a classic line that I have many fond memories of since I was (and still am) a huge wrestling fan. I remember when the tag team editions came out and I was so worked out and excited to get them. #1 on my list was the Rockers, which I eventually was able to get at K-Mart after much stressing over not finding them. I always wanted Demolition as well, but never got'em.

Favorite Figures: Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Ravishing Rick Rude, Andre the Giant, Macho Man Randy Savage, Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, Jake the Snake Roberts, Ultimate Warrior II, Honky Tonk Man, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, The Rockers, Demolition, WWF wrestling ring

#3

X-Men/X-Force/Marvel Super Heroes (Toy Biz, 1990-1997)

Yeah, I'm cheating a bit by combining the MSH line with the X-Men/X-Force line. So what? Both lines were very similar in terms of production and quality and were released at the same time. As talked about in Part I with the DC Super Heroes line, Toy Biz was a young upstart company and the figures were kinda cheap and goofy at first.

The Marvel Super Heroes line came first and boy did Captain America, Daredevil and Punisher look bloated and puffy (thanks to using the same basic model). They also annoyingly had their legs very close to one another, as if they standing at attention, making it hard for them to stand up on their own. Toy Biz quickly scaled back their MSH production in favor of the extremely popular X-Men (though still putting out a few MSH figures at a time) and then later X-Force had their own spinoff line, which was full of sucky X-Force characters, but it did produce the awesome Kane figure with flying hand!

As with most action figure lines and pointed out with TMNT, once the main figures were knocked out, things got real silly real quick and all kinds of gimmicks and new outfits were introduced as the X-Men were revamped as ninjas, armored & monster armored, light-up weapons, and robot fighters (encroaching on Magnus' territory!) during the line's final years. The ninja line was actually kinda cool though because the figures were designed by then X-artist Joe Madureira. That series was released in '97, way past my toy buying years, but my love of Joe's style convinced me that buying Ninja Sabretooth was the right thing to do and I still stand by that decision.

The talking figures were really cool. I had Cyclops, Wolverine and Venom. Each figure had a backpack with three different buttons producing three different sounds/sayings. Venom's "I WANT TO EAT YOUR BRAIN!" creeped me out as a kid and it's amazing that was even allowed for a kid's toy back then. I don't think that would go over very well today in Target or Wal-Mart. Wolverine's *SNIKT* sound effect was awesome and I ran the batteries out on all of their backpacks.

And who could forget the trading cards that came with each release? Was that Jim Lee X-Men card series awesome or what?

Favorite Figures: Talking Cyclops, Talking Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Wolverine II, Forge, Mister Sinister, Wolverine III (Logan), Wolverine IV (Weapon X), Gambit, Magneto II, Strong Guy, Wolverine V (Spy Wolverine), Omega Red, Apocalypse II, Bishop, Apocalypse III (Age of Apocalypse), Nightcrawler II, Ninja Sabretooth, Kane, Deadpool, Stryfe, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Iron Man, Talking Venom, Web Climbing Spider-Man, Punisher II, The Thing, Multi-Jointed Spider-Man, Deathlok, Punisher III

Masters of the Universe (Mattel, 1982-1987)

Yeah, if you know me, you know this series was coming up. The last few years, thanks to MOTU getting released on DVD, I've become a huge fan again. Unfortunately, all of my MOTU figures were thrown out thanks to my parents while I wasn't looking (while I was still a kid no less!), so I was only down to 1 figure: Thunder Punch He-Man. But due to the power of eBay, I have bought back virtually every MOTU figure I ever owned plus more! I own about half the line so far, not counting vehicles. I'm mostly getting down to the extremely rare and expensive figures, but I guess I'll have to live without those.

The hours I spent playing He-Man as a kid were definitely many. I can still smell that cap powder from when Thunder Punch He-Man walloped someone...

Favorite Figures: He-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, Battle Cat, Tri-Klops, Trap-Jaw, Panthor, Battle Armor He-Man, Battle Armor Skeletor, Prince Adam, Buzz-Off, Fisto, Orko, Jitsu, Whiplash, Clawful, Webstor, Kobra Khan, Mekaneck, Road Ripper, Roton, Stridor, Thunder Punch He-Man, Moss Man, Roboto, Two-Bad, Stinkor, Spikor, Hordak, Mantenna, Modulok, Night Stalker, Snout Spout, Stonedar, Rokkon, Tung Lashor, Scare Glow, Mosquitor, Sssqueeze, Ty-Grrr, Crocobite, Castle Grayskull

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (Hasbro, 1982-1994)

Was there every any doubt what would be #1 for me? Throughout the years, I've always managed to keep a handful of Joes on tap, despite losing so many over the years. Again, I've been using eBay to relive old glories by getting figures I remember owning and playing with as a kid, but whereas the MOTU line isn't *too* big, the RAH line is humongous and I doubt I'll ever be able to get all these figures I want.

The Joes were always my "go to" figures. I loved taking them out in the woods or my yard and letting battles play out in real environments. I remember building a snow base for them once when it snowed and I actually ended up losing one of the figures (I think Wet Suit) during that great snow battle only to find him in a mulch bed once the snow melted. I also had a friend who had virtually every Joe produced and kept them all in a huge toy trunk. Yeah, I stayed the night over there a lot on the weekends.

And when I didn't feel like doing the Joe vs. Cobra thing, I simply made'em into wrestlers. That seems to be what I did what most of my figures-- everyone became a professional wrestler at some point!

Favorite Figures: Cobra Commander, Destro, Doc, Duke, Baroness, Blowtorch, Mutt & Junkyard, Gung-Ho, Spirit, Storm Shadow, Copperhead, Zartan, Firefly, Cobra Commander II (Hooded), Alpine, Barbecue, Bazooka, Buzzer, Crimson Guard, Dusty, Flint, Lady Jaye, Quick Kick, Ripper, Shipwreck, Snakes Eyes II, Tele-Viper, Tomax, Torch, Xamot, Sgt.

Today, I had an absolutely splendid day. Well, this entire weekend has been great. The sun's been shining and our neighbours have gone on holiday living the key to their outdoor swimming pool with us, so I've been sunbathing, swimming and reading book all the time. Oh and had BBQs as well. No point in showering except splashing some water over my seat body before jumping into the pool. It's been great. Then Len texted me and asked if I had any plans. I didn't, but I just didn't fancy seeing anyone except AF whom I haven't seen since her wedding in June, so I said I was busy swimming and sunbathing with some people. (Mum, but she's people to isn't she?) And it occurred to me that I no longer felt bad about saying no. I didn't feel bad to choose an anti social day. Before, that would have been unthinkable. As one fellow blogger who goes under the name of Peranakan dude ones wrote. "You don't know who hides behind the sexy writing." He further said that a sexy babe could very well be a school cantina dinner lady with a curry puff hairstyle. That's so true. I don't know what sort of picture you have of me after having read my blog for a while. Some of you might be thinking, "God, she must be ugly, or she would put out some pics on her blog." True, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the reason I don't have any pictures on my blog, is because I'm afraid someone would find it in Google pictures, find my blog and somehow get me into trouble, like employers. For example, when that paper employed me, the employer told me he searched in Google for my picture and God knows if he would have employed me had he found this blog. Also, there are people that could find the picture and blog who I wouldn't want to have as a reader. Ok, so this has happened before. Somebody I didn't portray all that favourably found the blog, but that was just because he knew my name and where I lived and a few other things that made it easy. Bottom line is, no picture purely for my own security and security of anyone I write about. Some of you might perhaps be thinking, "This girl gets about and has a lot of friends and dates." For those of you who are thinking that, I can tell you that you are right. But it hasn't always been like that.

I used to be "The blind girl." The girl that surrounded myself with invisible playmates because nobody wanted to play with me. I lacked friends to such a degree that I preferred being alone. And when kids did want to play with me, I longed for lone time afterwards. When I became a teenager, I tried so hard to be like everyone else. I started using make-up and I really wanted a boyfriend. Everyone else had boyfriends, but I didn't seem to have any luck with the men. In fact, when I was 18 and still hadn't had my first kiss, I remember crying myself to sleep one night when sister who was 13 told me she'd been making out for the first time. I couldn't understand what the hell was wrong with me. I look the same now as I did then pretty much, but nobody wanted to date me. Mum also kept telling me it was because I was disabled and that disabled girls weren't exactly what teenage guy’s looks for. Mum2 had a nicer approach and told me I was too pretty and that's why the buys didn't want me. Sweet isn't she? I got my first boyfriend in highschool A Dutch guy. Perhaps because I was as old as I was, everything with him happened very fast. The first kiss, the first time I had sex etc. But things really started to kick off when I got to uni. In the UK I was clearly foreign even though I am white, have blond hair and blue eyes. But I got so much attention. I hardly paid for a single drink when I went out and I loved it. Not only did the guys wanna date me, but I also got lots of girlfriends. I could go out all the time if I wanted too and my social nature finally blossomed. I loved and still love having lots of people around me, but I still love my me time. It feels good when I can sometimes say "No" if I just wanna stay inside knowing that I'll probably get the chance to go out the next day.

Why am I writing all this crap? Just for those of my readers who are not as lucky as I am now. Just wanna say that we've all been losers, but we don't have to remain losers.

Going back to London tomorrow. Can't wait to see TJ again!!!

A Grand Junction man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to coerce his girlfriend into having sex by threatening to zap her with a stun gun. Christopher Morgen Taylor, 30, turned on a Taser three times early Tuesday morning after his girlfriend refused to have sex with him, according to an arrest affidavit for Taylor.

When you are 30, you are sometimes what we call “young and stupid.” It should be our duty to inform this poor misguided soul that … You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar; anyone with half a brain knows that.

Taylor's girlfriend told police that Taylor turned the Taser on and said to her, "I don't normally do this to anybody, but ..." His girlfriend said she told Taylor to turn off the Taser because it was "freaking her out," and she uttered a profanity and left the room, the affidavit said. She told police she was scared her boyfriend was going to use the device on her.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department located a stun gun on Taylor's bedroom nightstand after Taylor gave officers permission to search the house, the affidavit said. Taylor was in custody at Mesa County Jail on a $60,000 bond, on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault and unlawful use of a stun gun, and I suppose anger management classes are next.

Here’s a brief summary of what happened with Mirage after they stopped publishing TMNT comics

Here's a brief summary of what happened with Mirage after they stopped publishing TMNT comics in 1995. Kevin Eastman bought the semi-erotic science fiction comic magazine Heavy Metal and moved to Los Angeles to focus on that. He also launched a new, live-action TV show, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, in association with Fox and Saban. The new show was actually the ratings leader in its time slot but was cancelled after its lone season, 1997/1998. Playmates finally stopped producing TMNT toys in 1999. With the end of the Image Comics series in 1999, the Turtles were basically dead.

Surprisingly, even without TMNT projects to keep them together, most of the Mirage artists remained in Massachussets, working on various independent projects at the Mirage Studios facility. In 2001, Eastman sold his share of the TMNT to Peter Laird, who immediately set out to restart the entire franchise. Just like in 1984, his first step was to launch a new comic series, TMNT (just the initials, not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). In spite of the acronym, in the new series the Turtles are no longer teens but rather in their 30s.

Laird writes the series (it's still in publication) and originally he provided inks and fucking INCREDIBLE tones. Apparently the workload was too much for him because the tones were scaled back after the first couple of issues and now it's barely there at all, unfortunately. Unlike the classic series, there's an ongoing narrative but it seems to have dozens of loose ends and frequently hit brick walls. The most interesting story aspect of the new series is that aliens have landed and become a fairly common site on earth, so the turtles are able to walk around in broad daylight.

TMNT Volume 4

TMNT Volume 4 #2 art by Jim Lawson with awesome tones by Peter Laird, #28 art by Jim Lawson with no tones :-(

The new series went on hiatus in 2006 but finally returned last month with a unique distribution plan. New issues are available to read online FOR FREE. Print versions of the new issues are limited to 1,000 copies and cost $10 each. Back before the hiatus, this series was only selling about 4,000 copies per issue. Now that issues are limited to 1,000 copies it almost seems like a vanity project (but I don't mind).

In a way the main series has almost become a sidenote to the more popular and widespread spin-off series Tales of the TMNT. This series is published on an almost-monthly schedule and is about to reach its 50th issue. Stories published in this series can take place at basically any point in time, meaning sometimes we see little kid Ninja Turtles, sometimes old men, whatever. Indpendent or underground comic creators are given the chance to create issues and sometimes Mirage Studios members take their turn, much like the middle years of the original series.

The current publication regime is much more satisfying than the Archie, Image or Dreamwave runs but in most ways it falls short of the original Mirage run. The main TMNT series is somewhat aimless and the inks really vary in quality. Many of the indie artists hired to work on the Tales of the TMNT series are just not nearly as interesting to me as those that worked on the old series and most of them make little to no attempt to co-opt the "Mirage style". Still, I generally like and I'm glad it's around.

Reality TV is nothing new. Personally, as a teenager, I was an avid fan and viewer of MTV's original reality show and mother of them all, The Real World. This concept has been around for years. But what always amazes me, are the twists on the concept. First, it was Survivor - strangers on an island, who can last the longest? Then, there were the competitive dating shows (that just keep getting weirder), competitive performances, then self improvement shows - makeovers, parenting, rehab, and then the "swap" shows - houses, spouses, whatever. And now, lifestyle shows.

Lifestyle shows aren't exactly a new concept either. Anyone remember Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous complete with posh narrator Robin Leach? Lifestyle shows are currently the core of prime-time on E! Television. Whether you prefer watching Snoop Dog interact with his family, or Kimora purchase her next home, or stylist Kim Kardashian conflict with her sisters, there certainly seems to be something for everyone. The hottest lifestyle show for E! is the one that showcases the goings on surrounding the legendary Hugh Hefner and his three, yes three, girlfriends, The Girls Next Door.

When I first saw the show, I was intrigued and curious, as well as a bit nervous. I certainly didn't want to have my eyes violated, but at the same time, everything was the most glorious shade of pink and the ladies, they were gorgeous and funny and well, by this time, I was hooked. The show is actually far less about the production of soft core porn and more about the decadent living one can experience from peddling said porn.

At first, I watched to be envious. To see the big house, the cars, the trips, to see what it would really be like when money was no object. The best part was that it wasn't just big and flashy, it was girly, feminine, glamourous and the epitamy of fabulous. As I continued to watch, I started to feel connected to the girls. The whole show is really from the perspective of the three 20-somethings that reside in the mansion with Hef. They tell their story how they see things.

There is the definitive dichotomy to the show, as there usually is with reality shows, that is, there are the obvious things that are being stated, and the subtle things that you have to put together yourself. For example, all the girls have jobs and opportunities, and it would be easy to say that they've got some advantage and have been given things because they are sleeping with the 80 year old founder of Playboy, but when you watch the show and understand the interactions, you can see that's not the whole story. These woman have had to prove themselves to get the jobs they have. Holly is the west coast photo editor for the magazine and worked her way up into that position. She would have never gotten the job had she not worked hard and been an effective contributor during photo shoots. Hef is a better business man than to let her have control if she wasn't talented. Bridget has her own radio program, with which to use her Master's Degree in Communications and Kendra, well, Kendra's very young and she's hot, and she loves to shake what she's got, so she has plenty of modeling jobs and the like. Yes, these ladies got a foot in the door because of being a Girlfriend, but they've had to prove themselves to keep and advance in those jobs. These ladies aren't dumb, in fact, if you're looking for it, you can see that they are, in fact, very savvy.

Hugh Hefner himself never actually sits down in front of the camera to explain things like the ladies do, but it's quite clear from his interactions with the ladies, that he is a man in charge, not surprising for the original playboy and multimillionaire. He's got a brilliant mind for business and a gentlemanly demeanor. He's charismatic, charming, young at heart, and rich to boot. It's easy to see why women fawn over him.

While Hef is a man in charge, he's not a controlling or demeaning person. He uses a gentle but firm voice when giving instructions or requests. The immediate, exacting reactions of the staff are what reflect Hef's power and monetary influence. This isn't a job you'd want to mess up. Even with the ladies, Hef is in charge, but he's not a tyrant by any means. He encourages and ensures that the ladies are in touch with their parents frequently and has their family as guests at the mansion on a seemingly regular basis. These women aren't secluded or controlled, they are, however, influenced and clearly expected to uphold certain standards of behavior. Hef himself has stated that there is a routine in their daily lives (let's not forget the show is only about six to ten days out of every six months or so) and the women know what to expect. I'd venture to say that they also know what's expected.

Another thing that's simultaneously subtle and obvious about the lifestyle these four are leading is that they are in a polygamous relationship. Subtle, because there is no on camera sex or sexual elements of the relationships, but obvious because it is a modern day harem. I think has the effect of inoculating the viewers. We've been outraged and weirded out by the many polygamous groups that have made headline news lately, but for some reason, Hef and the girls don't' have that same effect. Maybe it comes from the fact that Hef manages to make sure the ladies are "well kept". There's nothing the girls could possibly want in the world. You also notice that the girls don't ask for much. It would be easy to assume they are gold digging bimbos, but watching the ladies interact with Hef, they treat him with respect, admiration and seemingly genuine affection. They are grateful for what has been provided for them and continue to remain humble and gracious instead of whiney and demanding. The fact that they share the man of the house, while the crux of the show, is hardly ever mentioned and easy to forget.

The other thing that is easy to forget is that this is Playboy. This is the age-old patriarch of shiny paged porn and soft focus blondes frolicking in exotic settings. It's the standard, the benchmark, the starting point for the industry. It's easy to forget because you are seeing women, not as objects, but as people. The ladies are telling. They are personable. They are God-made human beings with hearts and minds and *gulp* souls. It was a surprise to the producers and subjects of the show to learn that their audience is largely female, but I'm not a bit surprised. Guys don't want to relate to their porn, that's the point of having porn. It doesn't talk or have feelings, it's a guy's fantasy, which doesn't include having to listen to a lady's point of view. If a guy wanted to get involved, he'd get a real girlfriend, not glossy pictures of one. And my suspicion is that if the purchasers of porn had to see the humanity of all the girls they looked at, the industry would fold pretty quickly. So, maybe we all come to realize the impact of seeing people as people and not as objects and work toward helping others do the same.

Have you ever wished you have big brothers? You know, the ones who have different kinds of personali

Have you ever wished you have big brothers? You know, the ones who have different kinds of personalities but equally lovable to you; the ones who only think but loving you. I was always envious of my best friend, RHY. She has 3 older brothers and they adore her. They were quite protective of her but she was given enough space to enjoy her freedom. I badly wanted that back in high school. I don’t want to be strong all the time, you know. I just thought that I want to be rescued by someone whom I trust the most and in my imaginative world, that person is represented by a big brother.

All my life I was always surrounded by boys/men (idiots?). My first playmates were bon and ritchie. Both are sons of my parents’ kabarakada (friends) and both are 2 years younger than me. Then when I went to nursery school, I was always accompanied by eric, the son of my father’s friend. Whenever we were forgotten to be fetched, we’d just hold hands and find our way to ritchie’s parents’ house and have his dad call one of our parents. Although I did enjoy my time with them, it was only when I spent time with my older guy cousins which I first experienced being taken good care by a bunch of kuyas. Well, they were forced too. I’m the youngest girl cousin and the only child back then. If anything happened to me, they had to answer to the adults. In fairness, they were kind to me despite of the never ending teasings (which always end up me crying.) Pikon eh. pano naman ako hindi mapipikon e itutukso ba naman sakin ang mga batang bungi, duling o di kaya mabaho. They taught me how to fight back and eat like pig. Huh?!? Good thing ba yun? They taught me how to kick, run fast and to be alert. I think I got to their nerves oftentimes because I was a slow learner. I mean, how can’t I be? All I knew was eat candies and play with my dolls.

Then I went to school. I was sent to another school because my cousins’ school didn’t accept girls. It was an exclusive school for boys and for the first time nobody was there to back me up nor teach me what to do. I would pray at night to give me big brothers. I just needed them badly. Those prayers never ended even when I reached high school. I know that is stupid but sometimes it’s just tiring to be strong. i wanted somebody to fight for me, to wipe away my tears and defend my cause. Someone to say that it’s alright to fall because they are there to catch me

I faced reality when I entered college. I thought it was a good start for a new life. Forget about the past and anticipate the future. My drama was ALL BY MY SELF because I was alone in a different place with no parents around and with a language I hardly use. Hwag kumontra ang iba dyan. Talagang 100% batchoy and piaya bred ako kaya hiligaynon lang talaga ang nakasanayan kong salita. I tended to myself.

I actually found myself one day in the aikido recruiting booth. I was curious. Martial arts was one thing I wanted to do but just didn’t have the time back here in the province. Since I’m not into sports anymore, I thought it was a good idea to try it. I was attached to aikido from then on. Although it is great, what made me stay really were the people. I instantly had not 3 but like more than 10 older brothers. They too took good care of me. I was always fetched in my classroom and at kahit mamuti na yung mga mata nila sa gutom sa kakahintay sakin they always make it a point to have lunch or dinner with me (or vice versa). We have a tambayan (a place where we hang out) and that’s where we usually do our homework, chat, play magic cards and tong-its, write messages to everyone in our logbook and, well, it was also the place where love blossomed to those who became couples. Anyway, I enjoyed the attention and the love. I was even given a unique debut celebration. I’m not much a traditional type of person so I opted for dinner in a restaurant for everyone. I didn’t know that the aikido people had plans to surprise me.

During that day, I just did my usual routine. I went to class, hang out at the tambayan during break time and changed clothes to gi (uniform for aikido) so that I will be able to play. The session went on and I noticed that the aikido people who didn’t play were unusually present and were very restless. The sensei was about to end the session only to remember something he had to do. He called me to stand in front of the studio and I followed as told. I thought he still wanted me to have a last round of randori (a freestyle sparring). So while standing there in the middle of the room, I heard music playing and guys were entering the room in one line holding a stem of red rose on each hand. My face turned red. All of my big brothers danced with me and made me feel special that day. I know I will forever remember that.

And for protecting me… I had several occasions of stupidity in which obviously the big brothers protected me from. I once had a hard crush and fell for that boy named ASTIG. Yes, he was bad boy, astig in all sense of the word, charming, handsome with a great sense of humor, and, again, a bad boy. When he came into my life, I felt I was swept off my feet and had eyes only for him. Of course, the big brothers suddenly became concerned because I drastically changed. I no longer hang out at the tambayan and if I did, I would stay only for at most 10 minutes only to be fetched by astig. I didn’t go out with them during our weekend gimiks and I was suddenly literally absent in their lives. They had to look for me and remind me that astig is bad news. Although he was a dormmate of some of the aikido guys, everyone was irritated by him. Astig eh. e ano talaga magagawa ko? talagang gwapo at astig. tingin ko matalino rin naman. mabango. honga, mabango sya parati. parang naglilihi ako sa kanya nuon. He was just different. He just didn’t belong. I still didn’t listen. I was smitten to the fact that he likes me and that we spend almost all our waking hours together. We even burned the phonelines long distance calls during Christmas break (him in Bicol and me, here, somewhere in visayas). When we saw each other again after the Christmas break, everything was still the same. 2 weeks after though everything changed. Astig told me that he might be busy and that we might not be able to see other as often as we did before. After that, he seldom shows up. I had this very strong suspicion that he was intimidated by my big brothers. I hated them for doing that but until now nobody dared to tell me the truth. My girl friend though told me that somebody did talk to him.

I guess despite of everything I should be thankful to them because he got messed up after our “episode” (whatever you call that). He was always involved in fights and remained as bad boy as ever. When my boyfriend (now who was just a friend then) talked to him on why he immediately disappeared in my life, his answer was that he couldn’t take it to play with my heart… well, whatever that means, I didn’t want to and still don’t want to know.

So there. My wish did come true. I was not given true biological brothers but all through out my life I am gifted with persons who are worthy enough to be considered as big brothers. I love them even if I don’t show it often. I know that they know it anyway.
