I added my blog to Ping.fm (Check the site out at, you guessed it http://ping.fm )so that I can send out general statement to the 5/6 social sites I belong to. I mainly inhabit Twitter (http://twitter.com ) but I lurk on a few more. They will end up in the Blogroll eventually.

Some people hate ping.fm. they say it is impersonal but I find it to be a great help in posting general messages to 6 sites instead of having to go post the same message over and over to the same 6 site. One message and one press of the button. Of course I still have to go to the 6 sites to read any replies. Now if there was a program to read all the replies to those 6 sites, I'd kiss the developers ass in joy!!

bot bom, funcional, rápido e sempre a disposição.

No fim das contas, quando eu estava em busca de um bot do Google Talk para o Jaiku (o oficial está offline desde a mudança de servidores), achei algo ainda melhor!

E graças ao Ping.fm, agora temos um Jaiku e um Twitter!

Dica do Aaquil Mahmood via Jaiku.

Why do am I attached to so many social groups or networks?! I'm in a ridiculous amount of different networks where you see what's going on with other people and what not. But seriously i'm in a lot. A lot of them i put up all the same stuff too. its not like i go to each site and post different stuff each day. I don't i have one program that post to all of them. I am in a beta testing for Ping.fm its a site that is dedicated to help people update all the networks at once. interesting i thought. i can post to all these sites from my iChat, Phone, E-mail, & the Web. So I am not that big of nerd to update all of these places separately and checking them hourly. I check all of them maybe once a week if that. Cause all of them will tell me if anything has changed on the profile via email. I started doing all this for work as i have told you before but i don't know why i am doing it to such the extent that i am doing it. The only reason i have come up with is to bring traffic to my blog. My Hits have started going up a lot lately and i think its due to that. i have been getting comments from people i don't even know. so i guess that is my reason i am going to go with that one. i just love that all of these things are for social networking and seeing what your friends are doing but none of my friends are on these things. the only one where i have friends is on twitter cause i think almost everyone is starting to get on that wagon. I am just waiting for one of these things i am on to break cause some of them are pretty freakin awesome in my opinion. But they are not awesome when you have no friends in them. if i had a lot of my friends on some of these things i would love it. just to see some of the crap they are getting into. but no one is on them so they kinda suck so i don't really check them i just update them. so yeah. no real point to this post just wanted to post something today....yeah.

Well had a rather excellent night last night, congrats to all who did the leaving cert, wish I didn't do that transition year, that school can't apologize enough for the LIES that it was good. Sure memories and lasting friendships are all good and well, but the extra year of no DRUGS, SEX AND ROCK & ROLL in college is killer. Needle through my heart I tells ya. Didn't get fucked drunk, decided I wanted the free txts back off o2 so spent 20 of the 30 quid I had on credit. Funny thing is, I've been texting all day now and the cunt is not free, not even a bit. nope. My suckling at the nipple of free texts appears to have been weaned rather suddenly. When all else fails, blow shit up.
On another note, it's that legend Patrick Freeleys 18th this weekend, so will be doing some serious JDs. I left my foreign cheap vodka at his house now that I think about it, he's having none of it though! Why is he never shaven? Seriously! If someone can find me a picture of baby face freeley less than a year old then all my bebo love goes to them!
Bah, I wish I'd been to Muse, I don't want to hear about it, I KNOW it was probably good! So fuck off right?
I'm never gonna finish watching all this Yu Yu Hakusho, there's way too much.
I'm using Ping.fm to post this blog, it is some serious gold I tell you. Anyone on twitter? I am now, find me, I dare ya. I already found my long lost cousin maybe!

OK, I’ve seen a few things online recently that amused me and I’d like to share them. I

OK, I've seen a few things online recently that amused me and I'd like to share them. I don't want to add them to delicious.com because that's what I use for links I need to find again someday. These are things I've seen and enjoyed but they are gone. For me they are yesterday's newspaper. But you may not have seen them and I think you should.

So I've decided to add them to Tumblr. Easy. Tumblr is a great tool for doing this, it makes it easy to add videos, links, pictures, anything. I am very happy with this choice.

But this has now repurposed Tumblr in my social data flow from an output device to a content provider. Before, it just used to receive my status updates and micro blogs. Now it is the place where I link to things that have amused me.

Here's how I needed to reconfigure my social data flow:

1. Add Tumblr to my aggregators. Now my Tumblr posts will appear in my All Activity feed.

2. Remove Tumblr from my syndication list. Now Tumblr will not receive my status updates or micro blogs. This is important because otherwise these updates would appear twice in my All Activity feed.

3. Er...

4. That's it.

Simple.

Ping.fm is a new social service which, in their words, makes updating your social service a snap. Its not a new social networking service, Ping.fm actually serves to ease the managing of your existing social networks (or micro-blogging services). Its not an uncommon situation when you want to post an update and have to go through each of your service's website, copy/pasting the same message again and again. Ping.fm addresses this particular problem by providing a single platform that posts to all the services.

After signing in, the dashboards presents with a text box, just type your update and hit 'Ping it!' and it'll update all the respective services. All major social servies are supported including Bebo, Facebook, FriendFeed, hi5, MySpace, Plurk and Twitter.

Seems nice? It gets even better! You can also post to your blogs using Ping.fm! And, ofcourse, all major blogging services are also supported (Blogger, LiveJournal, Wordpress). So how does it distinguish between services? The answer is prefixes. If you use '@s' before your message, its a status update and if you use '@m' its a micro-blog! (Just click 'more posting tips' below the text box and it'll tell ya what to do).

You can also post to individual services if you want to. For example, if you use '@tt' prefix, your message will only be posted to twitter and using '@fb' posts it to Facebook. Its no doubt an incredible service which is extremely easy to use so I invite you all to join. Its currently in beta testing mode and requires a beta code to sign up. Use the beta code 'pingitlikeitshot' (without the quotes) if you're interested and enjoy!

And yes, it also has mobile platforms. i.ping.fm for iPhone and iPod touch and m.ping.fm for the rest of us!

I knew this question would come so: Why choose ping.fm vs. Socialthing?

Answer: ST´s intent is not only to post through different services, furthermore it gives you a timeline to view your friends' posts in a tiny stream!

ping.fm on the other hand handles different kinds of posting: 1. statuses 2. blogging/micro-blogging
So they have actually different services to post to. Ping.fm does not have a timeline to view and just sends pings to your services.

With ST integrating ping.fm as a service you can now push posts through more services, like brightkite, which is not yet supported for postings by ST.

Everyone got the idea? No? Then check it out... ;D

More information you´ll find on their websites:

In an attempt to remove the latency problem from my social data flow, I’ve rearchitected it a

In an attempt to remove the latency problem from my social data flow, I've rearchitected it a bit. Unfortunately the reworked flow is not quite as elegant as the original but then it had more sophisticated design goals so that's not terribly surprising.

Here's the revised flow with notes below:

(Click on the image for a bigger version)

Notes:

Now I can allow ping.fm to update Twitter and identi.ca immediately so I have removed the latency problem from the previous configuration. Once again I can use Twitter in a conversational way instead of it being a mere receptacle for RSS updates every half hour.

You'll note also that Twitterfeed can now update identi.ca and other Laconica-based micro-blogging sites. Thanks, Mario. This means I can promote identi.ca to be a peer with Twitter and receive all my updates including real-time micro-blogs (tweets).

The three subscription points are the same: Writing, Status Updates and All Activity. The URIs for those resources have not changed.

I have distinguished between blog posts such as this and the notification of those posts. To subscribe to the full post stream use the Writing feed. If you subscribe to the All Activity feed you will be notified about posts but only see the title not the whole article. Unfortunately if you subscribe to both you will see both the blog post and a separate notification of its existence - I can't do anything about this yet.

So there's an emerging gap between those select sites that I use to do stuff and those sites that merely receive notification of that activity. My strategy will be to keep to a minimum the sites I use for doing things, and maximise the number of sites that are notified about it. This way I can keep all my pictures, links, writing etc. in one place but all my disparate multiple friend communities will get equal notification of new activity in one of those upstream sites.

I think the new slightly less elegant social data flow is functionally better and I'll try to stick with it for a while to see how it performs in practice.

There is no reason to think the jungle of social networking sites are about to shrink. We are however seeing some seedlings that might grow up to be trunks the rest of the vegetation will have to cling to.

One of those trunks will probably be Ping.fm, a service that posts your microblogging entries to all the various services you have accounts on.

There are also various attempts to solve the reverse problem of reading updates from various different social networking sites, such as Socialthing! and FriendFeed.

Facebook

It is reasonably safe to say that the successes of Facebook will not last forever, simply given the fate of every other such web fad in the past. As Rasmus Fleischer said here (in Swedish): "Facebook is not a place, it's an event".

Photo: avlxyz (Licence)

Facebook is keeping up surprisingly well with new trends in social networking, this said mainly in reference to their update a couple of weeks ago, which switched the focus of the site strongly towards dynamic content fed into each users news feed. (Possibly under influence from FriendFeed.)

However, Facebook has a couple of problems that I think will speed up its demise, as better alternatives appear.

Broadcast communication on Facebook is not done in realtime. When you do something, it shows up in other people's news feeds after a time delay, varying greatly in length. True realtime might not be required, but the delay has to be short and predictable.

The other problem is unreliable propagation of broadcast communication. You don't actually know which of your actions will show up in your contacts' news feeds. This can be worked around in some particular cases, like by sending personal invitations to events. In any case, this makes the actual news feed near useless as a way to communicate information to your contacts.

Yes, you can send personal messages instead, but that is intrusive. One wants to be able to create a news entry that you know will be propagated to all of your contacts that wants to receive entries of that type from you. As it is, that might or might not happen, at some undetermined time.

In short, you want to be able to configure Facebook to let you know when, for instance, a contact of yours create a new event. You don't want to maybe get informed about it later.

Solutions and alternatives

Ping.fm and Socialthing! doesn't really solve these problems, as they are not social networking sites in themselves, only a way to interact with several other services from one location. However, they do let you do that in realtime to the same extent as those other services do.

FriendFeed is a sort of combination social network, RSS feed aggregator and microblogging site. It can broadcast items from your RSS feeds, and there is an API under development that can hopefully be used to integrate it with for instance external calendar applications to plan events.

A big advantage of FriendFeed as opposed to Facebook is that you can subscribe to your feed via RSS or e-mail, making sure that you get all the news items you should get, and that you only have to read them once.

“Ping.fm, a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap!”
Ping.fm, a seemingl

“Ping.fm, a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap!”

Ping.fm, a seemingly quaint little program is a grand addition to the social lifeline of present day techies. Being a long-time enthusiast of Twitter I was apprehensive about trying Ping.fm. In the end, my inquisitiveness got the better of me and I requested an invitation.

My interest in Ping.fm heightened when I discovered its ability to connect with various networking services including Facebook, LinkedIn and Plaxo as well as Twitter, to name a few.

Unlike Twitter and Facebook for example, Ping.fm does not provide the option to survey what your colleagues have posted in the program itself. However, I found that to be irrelevant as the inspiration behind Ping.fm is to ping (post to) your subscribed networks from one central service in a fast and time saving manner. Something that Ping, to-date, does inside the given period of time it stipulates: 60 seconds or less once you have added your message to the queue.

Further to their credit is Ping.fm’s blog. I am amazed at how much seemingly valuable and well thought out content ping.fm and its members provide.

As I examined the various blogs, one special gem caught my eye. It was a set of instructions with pictorials on how to use the plastic bags we shamelessly throw into our landfills to create a nifty wallet. While not a tech related article, but more about going green to better our planet, I felt it was worth sharing. http://jyoseph.com/blog/detail.cfm/post/343

Perhaps of even greater interest is the fact that Ping.fm is a member of, Get Satisfaction. (“Get Satisfaction is a community that helps people to get the most from the products they use, and where companies are encouraged to get real with their customers”.) While familiar with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) Get Satisfaction seemingly takes Ping.fm to a higher level of professionalism and customer satisfaction.

Even more impressive is the visual concern and for the well-being of Ping.fm’s network clientele on their (Ping.fm) help forum. Not only it seems, do they constantly have an employee(s) watching the help forum, but Ping.fm keeps you a breast as to who is doing the watching by providing their name and status level in the company.

Is Ping.fm without its problems, no not from what I noticed in their stats, but who is? However, they do give me the impression that they care and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure a satisfying relationship with their cliental. Something one does not always see in today’s fast paced, profit driven businesses. However, the latter could change, and one can only hope it does not, in this case.

Conclusion

Personally, I like Ping.fm; because of its lightweight, seemingly no-nonsense ease of use, I have already added it to my select online networking arsenal. Will it replace Twitter, no, not as I foresee, but it has already become the secondary networking alternative in my small harem of social networking tools and it defiantly complements it (Twitter).

Ping.fm is one of those rare gems you just have to experience to appreciate it.
