I'm thinking of putting up a video of some Broadway music that I recorded in a medley format on the piano. I think Broadway is so much fun, there's so much emotion, and it's a time where you can view the interpretation of the music by the actors. It's almost a visual to the sounds. There are so many great shows, yet the ones that really stay with me are the classics like "Annie, Bye Bye Birdie, Chorus Line, 42nd Street," and I'm sure I'm missing some. Anyhow, please be on the lookout for a new video, with a new camera angle haha, oh changing it up!

Henry Cowell

Piano Music (Smithsonian-Folkways 1994)

Link removed at the request of Smithsonian-Folkways

It is difficult, almost impossible, to redefine an instrument as familiar as the piano, but Henry Cowell did so by reaching into it and using the strings to manipulate his playing. His work with tone clusters and string manipulation inspired Bela Bartok to adopt his methods. In addition, John Cage utilized his methods to develop the prepared piano. His maverick ways led him to commission Leon theremin to create an instrument called the Rhythmicon that was later popularized by Joe Meek. Cowell even spent four years in San Quentin Prison on a "morals" due to his bisexuality and continued to compose and conduct the prison band until his pardon in 1942. After his release, his music became a bit more conservative, but he mentored such musicians as Lou Harrison and Burt Bacharach and served as a consultant to Folkways.

That is just a drop in the bucket in this man's fantastic and creative career. There is something so powerful about how he strikes the keys. Sometimes he demands your attention with thick clusters of slammed keys, but he is equally magnetic when he plays in a more minimalistic style. It is hard to quantify the emotion spent by the striking of a key, but his playing truly leaves me in awe of how one person can transform a musical instrument into a magical one. There is something elegant, yet brutal and severe about how he approaches the piano. He turns the piano inside out as he uses every inch of his instrument to create a powerful, dynamic music that inspires and moves me like few others can. Since I've been rambling about phobias and the spiritual all evening, it is only fitting that I share some of the most heavenly sounds thine ears have heard. It isn't always pretty, but it does hit upon personal chords that remind me that music can be a transcendent force in our lives.

According to the dictionary, a “gimmick” is a trick or device intended to attract attent

According to the dictionary, a "gimmick" is a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or, business.

From this definition, it is easy to conclude that gimmicks have no place in high quality education.

However...

... the piano education field embraces music reading gimmicks!

All piano method books (except the Westlund Piano Course) use gimmicks to teach beginning music reading. The gimmicks are called:

the Middle C approach

the Multi-Key approach

the Landmark/Interval approach

(I have written articles that debunk each one of these gimmicks. Look for them here: Middle C, Multi-Key, Landmark/Interval)

There are five reasons why the music reading approaches listed above are destructive gimmicks and not legitimate education:

students become dependent on the gimmicks

students don't need the gimmicks, they can learn perfectly well without them

students require songs specially composed for the gimmicks

the gimmicks must be abandoned in order to progress to higher levels

intermediate and advanced music readers do not use the gimmicks at all

Let's look more closely at each of the five reasons why the Middle C, Multi-Key, and Landmark/Interval reading approaches are nothing more than destructive gimmicks.

Students Become Dependent on the Gimmicks

If you show a student who has only played in Middle C Position a primer level song that is not in Middle C Position, they will be at a complete loss to read it. It won't even make sense to them.

If you show a student who has only played in hand positions a song that has no specific hand position, they will not be able to read it. They will say, "I can't tell what position it is in." The music notation won't even make sense to them.

If you show a Landmark/Interval student a song that has not been specially composed with steps and skips around specific landmarks, the student will not be able to read it. It will make no sense to them.

When humans learn new concepts and skills, the concepts and skills form neural pathways and cellular structures in the brain. In other words, the skills and concepts become "hard-wired". When a student is hard-wired with a specific "trick" for reading notes, that hard-wiring is like a deeply ingrained rut that the student will automatically fall into every time they read music. It becomes a compulsive habit that can be as hard to break as an addiction.

Gimmicks are Unnecessary

With the prevalence of the music reading gimmicks, one would think that beginning music readers absolutely require at least one of the gimmicks in order to learn to read music. This is completely untrue. I have been proving every day for more than a decade in my studio that beginning music readers don't need any gimmicks whatsoever to learn to read music. In fact, they learn to read music more efficiently, quicker, and easier without the Middle C, Multi-Key, or Landmark/Interval reading approaches.

Specially Composed Songs

Students dependent on music reading gimmicks most definitely require specially composed songs. Remember the definition of a gimmick? Gimmick- a trick intended to attract business. Think about it... If you want to sell something, make the consumer dependent on something they can buy from you.

If students are dependent on reading in hand positions or on certain landmarks and intervals, then if you sell the special songs they can play, their dependence is money in the bank for you! Drug pushers do the same thing... they make people dependent on the product they are selling.

Am I saying that music publishers who sell books using the Middle C, Multi-Key, or Landmark/Interval reading approaches are comparable to drug pushers?

You bet I am.

You Must Unlearn What You Have Learned

The Middle C, Multi-Key, and Landmark/Interval reading approaches work only in the beginning and elementary levels. Intermediate and advanced piano music is too complex for anyone dependent on one or more of the gimmicky reading approaches. Actually, even late elementary music is unsuitable for the gimmicks.

Anyone who wishes to progress beyond the mid elementary levels of playing, must completely leave behind their use of hand positions and landmark/intervals to read the music. Leaving behind the gimmicks can be impossible for many students because the use of the gimmicks has become hard-wired. Hard wiring takes an enormous degree of effort to unravel. The amount of effort required is just too much for many students, they becaome frustrated, and drop out of lessons. They then become one of the many, many (dare I say millions) of ex-piano students who took years of lessons but still cannot read music.

Is it wise to teach something that must be unlearned later on?

Accomplished Music Readers Don't Use Gimmicks

Accomplished music readers NEVER use hand positions or steps and skips from landmarks to read music. In fact, the thought is amusingly absurd to an accomplished music reader.

Beginning music readers in the Westlund Piano Course read music exactly the same way an accomplished reader does, just less complex.

Talented Students & Gimmicks

Don't worry about using gimmicky music reading approaches (Middle C, Multi-Key, or Landmark/Interval) with the top 10-30% of students who are musically talented. The gimmicks won't harm them at all the way they harm the 70-90% of students with average or below average musical talent.

If you are the kind of teacher who believes that almost anyone can learn to read music, then a direct, straightforward approach to teaching music reading is essential. You'll find just such an approach in the Westlund Piano Course.

Combining Gimmicks

It is absolutely comical to me that the new piano methods currently being marketed think they are doing a great thing by combining the gimmicks!

Obviously, they too have noticed problems with the hand position approach and the steps and skips around landmarks approach. But what is their solution? Just COMBINE the approaches that cause the problems!!! Now we can have ALL the problems of ALL the approaches... all in one!!

The Boldness of the Westlund Piano Course

Oh how bold and daring of me to throw out the window any approach that causes problems. Dare I be so brazenly fearless. Who will blaze this intrepid trail with me?

Franz Joseph Haydn ==March 31, 1732 – May 31, 1809== was one of the most prominent composers of the classical period, and is called by some the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet".

A life-long resident of Austria, Haydn spent most of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Hungarian Esterházy family on their remote estate. Isolated from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his long life, he was, as he put it, "forced to become original".

But recently my mum decided to invest in a second hand piano. May not be the wisest choices considering that it was many years since she had played the piano. But that got me started on the piano. I never knew I had a flair for playing the piano. Recently been picking up a lot of classical stuff. Canon, Fur Elise, Turkish March and a variation on Carol Of the Bells by George Winston are among some of the stuff that Ive picked up so far. Recently been listening to a lot of classical stuff too.

Canon by Pachelbel is one of my favorites. Listen to it a lot at work. I find that youtube has a lot of videos that host some really cool variations. Some of the versions that I listen to often are

My blog is this month...ONE year old!! The actual "birthday" is the 9th....I've decided to link this "celebration" to some "memories"...after a year, you always think back/reflect on things that happened throughout the year..and you try to improve the next year...so: I've decided to "reflect" a bit...not really...hehehe...it's just a blog! but to "refresh" some minds...I've decided to blog about the things I like/love...well, by just looking at that Springbok rugby player...I don't have to say more!! Go to Sept/Oct 2007 and you'll find about 10 entries on the World Cup Rugby...mostly about the Springboks ( of course!!) and their games..but there is at least the one of England against France too! I love rugby...and that's due to my very first boyfriend...he played rugby for about 3 clubs...the same time!.. and I used to spend my days at Loftus!! ....all those days chewing biltong (jerky for the Americans!) and droëwors! with the other girls...the links to entries on my blog is self explainable...according to the stats since Nov 2007.
Most popular Chess link ...Bobby Fischer.. was and is...the most popular POETRY link....and the most popular ART link...all of these links have had 1000+ hits till now...and this link is the MOST popular link on my site...with almost 1500 hits since I've moved my blog to Wordpress in November.

I practised it myself...it's from a book which I didn't use with my teacher....I could play it about half way at the end...but hey!! this piece of music is so tricky!! I really admire anybody that plays it like this lady does in the video! I still wish I could play it like that...<sigh>...sweet memories...ENJOY!

Usually when travelling people feel almost obligated to focus on local art and culture and easily pass over opportunities to enjoy artists from around the world who happen to perform in the country they are touring. This should not be the case if you are in Israel and Israel's Festival is going on. This is the Mega-Culture-Event of the country and it offers a special atmosphere that only Jerusalem can provide. Although featuring many performers from abroad, the festival is a celebration of Israeli performing arts and a celebration of Jerusalem which hosts the festival.

The Festival takes place annually for a few weeks in the spring. Throughout the festival, audiences are able to enjoy performances by artists from all over the world, as well as premieres of Israeli works and tributes to leading Israeli artists. The public can also attend a large selection of free performances, including street theatre, children's shows and a nightly jazz club.

Theater, Dance and Music of all kinds, over a thousand performers and artists in over a hundred shows, mostly in Jerusalem - at the city's most beautiful time of the year.

Take the time to examine the program and make sure you don't overlook a unique opportunity to see someone you've always wanted to see and somehow never got the chance to. The festival is extremely popular and in some cases tickets are hard to come by.

When: May 24 - June 22

Where: Jerusalem, Holon and Herzliya.

Alicia Keys was raised in New York. She showed an interest in music from an early age, starting to learn the piano from the young age of 7. Playing piano came easily to Alicia, and although she was supposed to be learning classical piano, she was soon entertaining herself by composing and singing R&B at the keyboard. Alicia was determined to pursue a career as a musician - as a teenager she attended the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, majoring in choir.

Alicia started out as a professional musician by writing songs and submitting them to movie studios as possibles for soundtracks - her first breakthrough when she co-wrote and sung the song Dah Dee Dah on the blockbuster movie Men in Black soundtrack.

In 2000, Alicia managed to sign a record contract with J Records. Her first album, Songs In A Minor came out in 2001. Sales were at first slow, but snowballed, eventually going on to sell more than 10 million copies. It also won five Grammy Awards. Favorite tracks on the the album include Fallin’ and A Woman’s Worth.

Her sophomore disc, The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003) was released to a solid fan-base, and quickly went platinum. Singles off the album include If I Ain’t Got You, and You Don’t Know My Name.

After a nearly four years gap, Alicia’s third studio album, As I Am was released in late 2007. The first single to be released off the album, the brilliant track, No One reached #1 in the charts.

Ignore the background noise, especially near the middle. Oh no, the timezone thing on my blog just reset itself. Argh.

For such a simple song, it's pretty astounding the number of mistakes I make 囧TL I couldn't be bothered to make a proper recording because it's just for fun anyway, so as a warning this is below my usual standards. I dunno, just in case someone comes poking here and starts rofling at my piano skillz. Not that I have much though ;__;

My roommate has a class 6 nights a week these days. I'm not sure how anyone expects me to eat without my live-in chef slaving away. I've been forced to cook, which would be fine if my creations didn't taste like canine feces compared to his. Last night, I made this recipe and:

I was serenaded by the internet while I ate.

The Amateur Gourmet is a fun site- he's gained such a following that he has a book out and I believe is on the Food Network for something or other. Anyways, this was a fun way to eat my din-din. I listened to it without seeing my computer so I didn't know what was coming next. Eye of the Tiger was the crowd fave; during that number I high-fived myself and took a shot.

Fun factor: 7

Recently I attended a conference where a friend of mine was the keynote speaker. My friend Karly is "non-verbal" which simply means she cannot speak with her mouth. Do not let the fact that she is non-verbal fool you into thinking that she has nothing to say. This woman has plenty of great things to say, not only in words, but she also composes beautiful music. She works with a musical therepist named Karen who works very hard to make sure that what is composed is exactly what Karly wants. At this conference we were able to hear all the music Karly has composed with Karen playing the piano. This photo to me embodies the realtionship between Karly and Karen. Karen makes sure that what we here is an exact reflection of what Karly wants us to hear. They are an amazing team!

On Saturday, my neighborhood had a community yard sale. This time we didn't join in all the fun, but did visit a neighbor (who happened to have "kids" our age with kids that happen to go to the same church preschool as two of my kids... which is the primary reason I went over to visit - my youngest kept on saying she wanted to go over and play since she could see one of the kids) as they were wrapping up.

In an old bin, I saw quite a pile of old books (one was dated from 1914 I think). Yeah maybe not that old, but still pretty old. I believe there were 2 arithmetic books, and the rest were music books. I snagged a handful, but unfortunately only one that was piano sheet music, and it doesn't even have the front and back cover! Looking through it tonight, I noticed a page that had this "A Personal Testimony" that I thought was interesting.

A Personal Testimony

I was standing at a Bank counter in Liverpool, waiting for a clerk to come; I picked up a pen and began to print on a blotter in large letters, two words, which had gripped me like a vice: "PRAY THROUGH." I kept talking to a friend and printing until I had the big blotter filled from top to bottom with a column. I transacted my business and went away. The next day my friend came to see me, and said he had a striking story to tell me. A business man came in the bank soon after we had gone. He had grown discouraged with business troubles. He started to transact some business with the same clerk over that blotter, when his eye caught the long column of "PRAY THROUGH." He asked who wrote those words, and when he was told exclaimed: "That is the very message I needed. I will pray through. I have tried to worry through in my own strength, and have merely mentioned my troubles to God, now I am going to pray the situation through until I get light."

What's a blotter, anyway? I Google'd around, and apparently this book was scanned in - and is apparently called Alexander's Gospel Songs (1908) by Charles Alexander...
