Saturday morning we drove to the Cape to visit my dad and Janice and see my brother and one of my sisters. While we were there I showed Micky the house I grew up in and my old neighborhood. I have beautiful pictures of my dad, Janice, and Susan, but am forbidden from posting them. :)

On Friday night Micky and I had friends and neighbors over for food, games, drinks, and fireworks. It did occur to me that it was a bit hypocritical to host a party celebrating a country I'm not particularly proud of at the moment, but I decided to think of it as celebrating what our country should be about. That way we could still have a party. :P I'm completely exhausted, so this is just a picture post. I'll update later with some ridiculously funny Kathy quotes from the evening. (I left the piece of paper they're written on at home.)

I've been very lucky to be the recipient of old photos - a few prior to the 1900s, many from the early 1900s - 1950s and later. My family has an affinity for snapping photos of graves and headstones - which is like a windfall for me - especially when all the pertinent information is recorded as well. I have pictures of graves from Ohio and Indiana to Oregon and Washington State.

Here are just a few of the photos I've been lucky to receive.

Graves of my grandmother's grandparents - Emmanuel Stern and Nancy Caylor Stern.

Graves of Joseph Napolean Wilt's (my great-grandfather) brother, Charles Wilt and Charles' wife - Margaret.

Johnson Ancestors' graves:

Grave of William and Vilena Johnson (my g-g-grandfather's brother and sister-in-law); Graves of Mary and Letis Johnson - my grandfather's siblings; then the picture of the graves of my great-grandparents (James Wilson and Amanda Evaline Johnson's) babies who died in infancy.

My brother, Jim's grave, in Welcome Cemetery close to Culman, Alabama.

There are many more in my files and quite a few that I haven't scanned yet. I've also had other distant cousins and relatives email me or actually send me pictures of ancestors' graves.

Do you go "grave hunting"?

It was filmed over a six-day period and shows every demonstration performed for the class. You can be a part of the workshop and paint along with me, just as the participants of the class did. The package contains everything you need to understand and execute the project. Take advantage of this unique product to learn Old Master methods used to reproduce this popular painting, originally done by the great Victorian artist, John William Waterhouse

In reproducing this great masterpiece, She chose to use the most complete academic method available to explore this painting. A grisaille underpainting in shades of which, black and gray is the foundation of this beautiful work. Lessons presented in this lengthy work include instructions on how to enlarge the drawing from 18" x 24" to 30" x 40" or 36" x 48". Here's what a customer thought:

"A very informative video about the classical grisaille technique. Highly recommended. The techniques presented can be applied to any style of painting and improve the end result. Well organized and presented! I also thought it was interesting that Waterhouse who created the original painting did not use this technique but the workshop's end result was a reasonable facsimile." - Samuel C.

Here's what a customer thought about this video:

"Clock repair is almost a lost trade there is not that many clock repair tradesmen doing it any more mostly because a lot of old-time clock repair men have passed away or they are to old and cannot continue doing repairs. Times have changed and we live in a throwaway world where you buy a new clock and if it stops running you just throw it away and buy new one. There is still a lot of clocks out there that people want to have repaired this is why we have to keep this trade going. This is my first time watching a course on clock repair. I am glad that John has made these courses to get a new generation of clock repair people interested again in the trade. John tope has done a good job with this advanced course. This course on Advanced clock repair has good techniques and gives you step-by-step procedures on repairs. This course is for someone that has already some knowledge of clock repair, you must already know how to completely take apart and reassemble a clock before going through this course. I recommend it and if you already know how to do some of the repairs on this course it is always a good opportunity to watch a other clock repair person to get their techniques to make you more knowledgeable for repairs. I look forward to watching his other clock courses." - William W.

Kent Couch's 2007 Balloon-Powered Lawn Chair Flight

In 2006, Kent Couch had to parachute out of his lawn chair, after having popped too many balloons. And in 2007, he flew 193 miles to the sagebrush of northeastern Oregon, which was a little bit short of his goal. After the 2007 flight, Couch stated, "I'm not stopping till I get out of state."

Lucky Number Three: Soaring Up, Up and Away

This was Kent Couch's third balloon-powered lawn chair flight. Riding in his lawn chair that was supported by a rainbow array of more than 150 helium-filled party balloons, Couch took off last Saturday in his third attempt to fly from central Oregon all the way to Idaho.

Couch kissed his wife and children goodbye, and patted their shivering pet Chihuahua, before his ground crew gave him a push so that he could clear surrounding light poles and a coffee cart. Then, clutching a big mug of coffee, Couch rose out of his gas station's parking lot into the bright blue morning sky, cheered on by a crowd of spectators.

Using his trusty BB gun to help him return to Earth, the 48-year-old gas station owner flew his lawn chair powered by helium-filled balloons more than 200 miles across the Oregon desert, landing in a field in Idaho. Couch created quite a sensation in the tiny farming community of Cambridge, Idaho, as he touched down safely in a pasture where he was soon greeted by dozens of the town's residents.

On the Fourth of July, my husband and I headed over to his father and step-mother's home in Lapeer. While they were ATTEMPTING to build a chicken coop, I wandered off in search of things to photograph. Man did I find a goldmine - BUGS, BUGS AND MORE BUGS! How fun is that?! :)

I chased this guy around as he hopped from stalk to stalk - it was pretty cool.

Then I came upon him - it looks like he's smiling at me! :)

My favorite are always the butterflies and moths. I think the light really made this guy extra gorgeous.

Some chickens awaiting their new coop:

Their French bulldog, Suzie - isn't she a cutie?

Their little granddaughter, who is just full of energy - if only we could bottle it :)

We even found baby toads! They were so teeny-tiny!

Then we finished up with some fireworks -

I hope everyone had fun, safe, and relaxing weekend!

So far as I know, dudelet is convinced that this is some sort of strange pen. We both puzzled about what on earth it was for a while, as did every passer-by at the school summer fete. Eventually, I worked out what it was (I didn't tell him). Dudelet remained puzzled but still insisted on buying it from the second hand toy stall for the princely sum of 30p.

There's a company name on the bottom of it. I must look them up.

Once again we set out for Cornwall for a week's holiday. The weather looked a lot more promising on entering Cornwall than it did the last time when the clouds rolled in black and thundery. We stayed in a privately owned caravan on a caravan park at St Merryn near Padstow. We were very surprised that there were so few people on the site - the entertainment was almost non-existent - who was there to entertain? We spent a couple of days in Padstow and how glad we were that we'd gone early. By 12 o'clock the place was heaving. We walked up onto the cliff with the intention of walking down the other side to a quiet beach, but by the time we got to the top we thought our four-hour parking time would be up so we gave up. On our second visit we paid for over four hours - which in fact gave us twelve hours! Plenty of time to take in the beautiful scenery.

I phoned our friends who live just about four miles from where we were staying and were invited around one evening for a meal. It was a chatty afternoon and evening, catching up on news, and before we left we arranged to go out one evening for a meal.

Newquay, the last time we visited was packed with surfers so we've avoided it for a couple of years. David particularly wanted to go to the Blue Reef aquarium, so we braved it. There were no surfers anywhere to be seen and the town wasn't too crowded. Just about to sit for a snack at a seafront cafe, a teenage girl was banging the sand out of her trainers on the table, would you believe. I politely asked her to stop (I'm always polite) as we were going to eat and would she mind brushing the sand off the table.

"You want to eat here, you b....y well brush it off" was her response. How rude! And her parents just sat back and said nothing. I'm afraid to say, I wasn't quite so polite then!

We went to the zoo too.

Our trip home wasn't so good - torrential rain all the way so we only stopped briefly for coffees. I'd had the foresight to pack the picnic basket, complete with flasks of hot water, on the back seat of the car instead of in the boot.

* * * * * * * * * *

We went out last night to a party given by a friend I'd met up with again in the Oncology Department. As she said the only time you have a get-together is christenings and marriages, so the party was to celebrate nothing in particular.

* * * * * * * * * *

Jackie's friend was visiting her today so we were invited to join them for elevenses. We hadn't seen them for several weeks as they'd all been silage making so we didn't leave until about 7.30 after having lunch and dinner with them! Can't get rid of us that easily Jackie!

Rare Photographs Of Shirdi Sai Baba - Real vs Unreal
Various photographs are widely ciruclated on the internet claiming to be "rare" (and formerly unknown) original pictures of Shirdi Sai Baba. This article will provide genuine and known pictures of Shirdi Sai Baba along with pictures, drawings and/or forgeries that are claimed as authentic.

Genuine & Authentic Photographs Of Shirdi Sai Baba:

[wp_caption id="attachment_615" align="aligncenter" width="72" caption="Genuine Pictures Of Shirdi Sai Baba"][/wp_caption]

Another Genuine & Authentic Sai Baba Photograph:

[wp_caption id="attachment_616" align="aligncenter" width="125" caption="Original Sai Baba Picture"][/wp_caption]

Drawings & Paintings Of The Saint Of Shirdi, Sai Baba:

[wp_caption id="attachment_617" align="aligncenter" width="76" caption="Paintings Drawings Of Shirdi Sai Baba"][/wp_caption]

Widely Circulated Imitation/Fraud Pictures Of Shirdi Sai Baba:

[wp_caption id="attachment_618" align="aligncenter" width="128" caption="Imitation Pictures Of Sai Baba Of Shirdi"][/wp_caption]

Readers with a discerning eye can easily distinguish between paintings, drawings, sketches and art of Shirdi Sai and authentic pictures and photographs. However, for those who are not entirely familiar with the Saint of Shirdi, it is harder to discern between genuine photographs and imitation ones.

I once saw a feature in the National Geographic about an American photographer who took one single photograph every day for a year. As you would expect for a NG photographer, the photos were amazing.

Well, for the next year, I will be doing the same. My subject matter will be completely different i.e. family, friends, various locations I travel to etc, but the principle will be the same - to take one photo a day of something that interests me.

Here is the first.

Shakespeare in the Garden was presented by the Nantucket Arts Council on Thursday, June 26, at the home of Beverly Hall in Madaket to benefit the annual Shakespeare Festival. Money raised here allows the Council to keep all Festival events free of charge. Scenes from Twelfth Night were performed, there was a silent auction, jugglers, music, and a buffet. Photographs by Gene Mahon and Amanda Morgan.

Nature provided the fireworks last night.

About 11:00, a summer storm started to threaten. I'd run to the drugstore to get Jenni some contact lens solution, as she'd managed to get to Florida without it. They say you go on vacation to forget things, and when you get there, you find you usually have.

In any event, I'd been out on the porch talking to Scott Abrams about his new improv project, of which I hope to be a part, and I kept noticing flickers of light outside. Our streetlights often work intermittently, and I just thought it was the light out on Florida Boulevard trying to come on. But when I got in the ragtop, top down, of course, to go to the drugstore, I noticed the electrical discharges racing across the sky. The storm was still several miles away, which I confirmed looking at the radar online when I got home, so I decided to try the same technique on the thunderstorm as I had Friday night on the fireworks at the beach. I got lucky.

Set up on the tripod, in full manual mode and with my remote shutter release, I waited. I shot the first one at f5 at about a 1/2 second shutter speed and ISO 400. The second, I stopped down to f8 but increased the exposure to 2 1/2 seconds. Both were shot with a 28mm lens in manual focus mode. I love the metadata the camera puts on the captures. I was out in the driveway for about 30 minutes to get these two images, and about a dozen completely black ones.

I got this camera, in part, to get shots like these. Please go look at the full size images on Flickr.

So today is Sunday, and we'll be meeting Ann Hopkins for lunch. She was Provost at Miami of Ohio before coming to UNF, and Jenni will be attending Miami in the fall, so I really wanted an opportunity to get them together. Tonight is dinner with Busy, Tim, and Lucas. Tomorrow is a down day before the fun starts Tuesday. In the business, we call that a teaser. More later.
