PTFE(Poly tetra-fluoro ethylene) is a fully fluorinated polymer available in various unmodified and modified grades. PTFE is processed by compacting the powder under pressure at ambient or slightly higher than ambient temperatures. Methods of forming products include paste extrusion, ram extrusion, molding and calendaring between rolls. Many formed PTFE products are consolidated by sintering in an oven or used in unsintered form ( eg: thread sealant tape). Paste extrusion and calendaring methods are used with fine powder PTFE resins while granular PTFE resins are processed by ram extrusion and molding.

Fluorotherm manufactures PTFE paste extruded tubing with the following features:

· Extremely high lubricity, thus low coefficient of friction compared to other materials
· Non-stick and non-wetting (hydrophobic), low surface tension with water
· Excellent dielectric and electrical insulation characteristics
· Exceptional chemical inertness
· Upper temperature use limit for PTFE is 500°F (260°C) under non-stress conditions
· Suitable for cryogenic conditions: -320°F (-96°C) the boiling point of liquid nitrogen
· PTFE has UL 94 VO rating for flame resistance, does not burn
· Autoclave and ETO sterilizable
· PTFE tubing is easily purged and cleaned

N-am mai urmărit subiectul și frankly my dear I don't give a damn.

Dintre avantaje, putem enumera :

And if you dare throw a stone at a stray dog or inflict pain on any animal or breach their rights, better be wary. Her snaps take violators to task, and ensure that they pay for it.

KalpanaVasudevan, managing trustee, People for Animals (PFA), Unit II, here has provided shelter to a number of animals and birds in her house and is determined to end cruelty meted out to them.

“There are strict laws in the Constitution forbidding cruelty to animals but people should

be made aware of them. PFA is talking to the authorities for a separate Police wing exclusively for animal welfare. It will surely make a difference,” she says.

According to her, an elephant begging for money is never a lovely sight. She had taken

action against a group that made an old and underfed elephant beg on Terumanallur-

Tirupur road. “Such practices can never be tolerated,” said Kalpana.

Horses too face a lot of hardships.Once having faithfully led their masters to victory in

races, they are abandonedwhen they growold. They roam around, and when they do not get enough food, they end up chewing pedestrian’s clothes and sometimes also harm people.

On stray dog ‘menace’, Kalpana says: “It’s due to unavailability of food. They are struggling to survive. That’s why they harm humans. I understand the need to control the population of dogs. But killing them is no solution.”

PFA is going to organise a programme in Coimbatore for controlling the growing population of dogs. Under the programme, pups and tough dogs (ferocious dogs) froma selected area will be removed and put for adoption.

The remaining dogswill be sterilized and given anti-rabies injection. She believes that this programme could help save 200 to 300 dogs a month.

“From a young age, children should be taught that harming animals is wrong. Parents

“One should not deny their freedom. If you want birds as pets in your house, tie a net

around the trees and keep theminside. Please, no cages.”

PFAunit II has about 300 volunteers around the city including college students. “Help is

just a call away. But we need more volunteers especially young.”

One issue faced is the lack of space to shelter the rescued animals. “Once, the horses which I rescued were tied around my house until I found an alternative. I’ve spoken to the authorities regarding the lack of space. It will be taken care of sometime,” she beams optimistically.

Kalpana shelters 30 street dogs in her house. “If you ever come across cruelty towards animals, just give me a call. If possible take a photo of it,” she says.

This year's New York Asian Film Festival offers an impeccable feast of critical hits and audience favorites from the Pacific coast. Runs: June 20th - July 13th

First up is a Japanese version of Meet Joe Black, with a similarly handsome lead (Takeshi!), but without the tedious pacing and the inconclusive dribble. Called Sweet Rain: The Accuracy of Death, it's separated into three acts, with each story exploring the relationship between the Reaper and his victims/patients. The embodiment of death being played by a gorgeous male actor demands that we take for granted a family-friendly equation between le petit mort and orgasm. With all the queasy S&M parts thrown out, it's hard not running towards the light at the end of the tunnel when Brad Pitt is there waiting for you. It reminds me of why Orpheus fell in love with Death and gave up on Eurydice, thanks Cocteau for the twisted romanticism.

The other film playing at the New York Asian Film Festival is Johnnie To's Sparrow, a G-rated ode to Hong Kong through the gauze of French New Wave-ness with pickpockets and con artists combing the streets. To's retrospective at the PFA will be the subject of a later retroactive post.

-------------------------------------------------

Since I don't really live in the area, I mind as well gush about other retrospectives I would not hesitate auctioning my soul for. Film Forum is importing the iconic Japanese actor (other than Toshiro Mifuni), Tatsuya Nakadai, for a limited run of his filmography, June 20 - August 7. And he's still alive, and doing a Q&A.

If anybody ask me for a list of my favorite actors, Tatsuya would be near the top. It was When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (Naruse, 1960) that introduced me to this boyish face, which lacks the delicate curves of Sessue Hayakawa and the jagged features of Mifune, defined solely by an almost perfect square and enhanced by the awkward contortions of his brows and lips. I wanted Mama-san to end up with her shy manager (played by Nakadai) and not with the businessman who would later abandon her. Why does this always happened to comfort women with the hearts of gold?

Even on the onset of his prolific career, a protean resilience separated him from his peers, as he donned and discarded one mask after another, somehow symptomatic of the 60s, a period where conventional Japanese masculinity had undergone a shift of confounding uncertainty. Was he supposed to be a hyper aggressive cipher of evil (Sword of Doom), a sacrificial martyr for institutional critique (Harakiri), or just an everyman getting extensive plastic surgery (Face of Another)?

Terrence Rafferty of the NY Times best sums up the strange appeal of Mr. Nakadai.

Whether Mr. Nakadai is portraying a man who is delighted by the life before his eyes or appalled by it, he never looks blasé, uninterested: he seems to exist in a state of constant surprise.

By 1985, when Kurosawa's Ran saturated the radar screen, everyone had forgotten that adolescent face behind the theatrical madness of Lord Hidetora, another mask among a series of others.

My personal pick: The Age of Assassins (Kihachi Okamoto, 1967), a wacky espionage romp starring Nakadai as the quintessential Hitchcockian "wrong man" on the run.

Bodmin-based PFA Research has recorded an increase in turnover of 15 per cent from January to December 2007.

And during that time the company has also made Unlocking Cornish Potential (UCP) graduate Martin Hockaday a permanent fixture.

“As the figures show the last year has been really good for us,” said PFA Research’s managing director, Robert Rush.

“It’s been busy and exciting, and we’ve worked on a real range of projects from small polls through to staff satisfaction surveys for county councils.

“The period has also seen us expand our area of work on a national scale, which has allowed us to bring Martin in permanently after a successful trial under UCP.

“He has come in and added real value to the business, as well as insight into data. With his background in social research and the way he can interpret the data he has helped us increase our core analytical competences, made us more competitive and helped us address a wider market.”

According to Robert the signs are there that 2008 will be another good year.

“Despite the murmur of difficult times ahead, we’re putting a lot of initiatives in place, such as flexible working, to make us even more competitive.

“We know that organisations that invest in research and plan for their business are more likely to work through uncertain times. I believe the plans we are making will allow us to increase our range of clients on both a local and national level.

“And with Martin’s addition to the team and his fantastic ability of analysing to data, this has allowed me greater flexibility to target new clients and grow the business even more.”

Chelsea beat Manchester United at home to keep the title race open with two more games remaining in

Chelsea beat Manchester United at home to keep the title race open with two more games remaining in the season. Ballack scored with a header and converted a penalty to outscore a gift of a goal from Rooney handed by Carvalho. The advantage still lies with Man Utd due to their far superior goal difference but anything can happen in this league. West Ham and Wigan hopefully can give them some challenge and take a away a few points, which means the excitement of the title cannot be writen off unless Chelsea lose in between.

Alex Ferguson would be to blame if Manchester United do not win the title from here. He rested Tevez and Ronaldo and started with Nani and Anderson in the middle of the park with Rooney on his own. A tenth minute casualty was Vidic who caught Drogba's knee and it is reported that he lost a teeth and has got stitches on his lowe lip. It was all Chelsea in the first half and it ended with Ballack scoring off a wonderfully taken header. Carvalho's lapse in concentration meant Rooney got a free goal to his credit. But he was the second casualty and I wonder if his hip injury is responsible for his poor performance in the last few matches. Even Ronaldo couldn't rescue a point as a penalty sealed the fate of United hopes.

There were enough incidents in the match, like Drogba and Ballack arguing on who should take a free-kick and that incident involving Rio Ferdinand. But the biggest scuffle happened after the match when some of the United players got involved with the Chelsea staff.

Actul normativ permite asigurarea in sistemul public de pensii

The latest ranking table has just been freshly released by FIFA and yes, Malaysia has been ranked NO

The latest ranking table has just been freshly released by FIFA and yes, Malaysia has been ranked NO.170 by the world football association. Considering there are soooo many countries in the world, aiya... no.170 is not too bad also la... kolek ah?

But when I surveyed further, I found a few surprises in the ranking of FIFA. The country of Gabon (where the heck is this place? can anyone look it up in an atlas) is ranked 98. A war-ravaged country such as Iraq, where US occupation has entered its 5th anniversary, is ranked 70 - 100 rung above us! Can anyone imagine a country that virtually don't have any academies to nurture young players or perhaps worse, may be without any 'flat' playing field, can still be ranked so much higher than us.

Ok ok... dun compare ourselves with those supermen. They are not on same playing ground like us. Try to look for some nice & fair comparison among ASEAN countries. Same region. Adik beradik mah... Tinggi sama tinggi, 'panjang' sama 'panjang'... :) I was shocked to find that Vietnam (115), our small & supposely 'weak' neighbour Singapore (129) and Indonesia (132). Even Taiwan - where their national game is baseball and basketball is still ranked 1 rung above us @ 169!

Hey FIFA, are you sure you got it 'kolek' ah wif your ranking? Don't play play u know... Your ranking might create unrest & street demos in our country. I tried to call FIFA president to ask him for clarification but was told that the ranking was 'final'. Sigh... nampaknye I haf to accept the FACT. The FACT that Malaysian football has fallen oh so LOW! No. 170! Lower than hockey & cricket crazy country such as India (154) and Pakistan (161)!

I hope our FAM President is aware of this ranking. The Malaysian football is in FREE Fall! Something got to be done. But it seems that we got too many 'Sami Veboos' in the country who hold high posts regardless politically or socially. If you're not good enough, you JUST not good enuff! Just Do the Right Thing. Don't waste the time & money of the people by overstaying your tenure as head, chief, kepala, president, or watever post u can name. Over then 10 over years with 'him' as president of FAM, Malaysian fans have been singing 'London Bridge is Falling down...' about the national team. Can't we just be a bit professional by employing the kolek group of people to run these organisations?

I am ardent fan of footieball, be it EPL or Malaysian Super League. I used to support my Penang Panthers when they were realli good under Moey Yoke Ham. I even brought my wife who hated football very much to our proud City Stadium to cheer the team. But sadly, these were onli sweet memories. Today, Penang is languishing rock bottom of the table, suffering the same fate suffered by the national team. If we don't find a remedy fast enuff, to no.710 here we come!

(Psst... got so many countries in the world meh? I dunno lor... hehehe...)

PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor has called for greater security to ensure players are protected from crowd abuse.

Sol Campbell also believes things are out of hand:

"We can all take the booing or light banter, but when it gets to the realms of verbal abuse it's a bridge too far".

He also questioned whether this sort of abuse is an infringement of a player's human rights.

While you cannot condone some of the ridiculous abuse handed out to players on occasion (in my opinion the Ashley Cole/Arsenal situation went too far at the weekend), supporters pay a lot of money to watch these "superstars" who earn more in a week than they will in a year. If they think a certain player is a bit of a prat they have every right to say so.

On the day Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is arrested on rape allegations, and following incidents including Joey Barton putting a cigar out in a team-mate's eye and allegations of racially motivated assault in recent years (to name but two), I wonder who needs this protection more - footballers from the public or the public from footballers.

If you're interested you can listen to Sol Campbell's interview with the BBC here.

I’ve recently plonked my money down and joined the PFA. I spent some time wracking my brains

I've recently plonked my money down and joined the PFA. I spent some time wracking my brains over this, dithering between that and the alternative -- AOPA. I was reluctant to spend money on both since bother are about £50 which is not peanuts to the constantly skint flyer.

Since my decision making was so overlong and drawn out. I thought I'd post it up for others also thinking about it...

Basically felt I did want to join some sort of representative group mainly because I'm a firm believer in "if you don't vote don't whinge". AOPA do a year free membership for student pilots (Not well advetised but tick the "Student" box on the joining form) and I was a member while I was training but it's been gone a year since then now and I felt I was ranting an awful lot without doing a great deal about any of the "issues facing GA" which they both purport to tackle.

In the end it was several factors that swayed me towards the PFA. One of the main ones was their active Youth and Education section which is all about encouraging young people to take an interest in aviation. This is something I feel quite strongly about and wanted to support.

The next influencing factor was (and I'm sure their marketing department will love to hear this) the upcoming name change to the "Light Aircraft Association (PDF)" and their posted news article on why they were doing so (PDF). They went to some lengths to point out that they aren't just for homebuilders. I fly a CofA aircraft and the main thing putting me off the PFA was trying to work out if it was really worth joing a "homebuilders association" when I can just about put up a shelf without hammering my thumb... Was their talk of representing the whole GA community anything more than marketing blurb?

The mantra of "Affordable Flying" goes without saying is right up my street , and there are very many lovely looking PFA machines out there which I daydream over, and several people have been good enough to take me flying in theirs. Overall it's more the way I see my flying long term. AOPA, at least to me, seems more geared to the "proper" pilots than the kind of sunny-day-bimbler which I am.

So while I waited for the Big Annual Bill (yes I was still waiting for the aeroplane to come back), I splurged instead on my first payment and have been rewarded with a big stack of marketing material and two magazines hot on the heels of each other.

My first impressions are of an active, busy, motivated, strongly opinionated organisation. There were some snippy, snipey comments in the first magazine I received which didn't really endear me to it all that much (complaining about members not releasing the details of their build projects). I did pause to wonder if I really had just joined up with a bunch of stroppy whingers after all, but it didn't seem to be repeated in the next offering so I'm withholding judgement for the moment. "Opinionated" has its place after all, and is sometimes the way to get things done.

I've read the magazine cover to cover, including to my suprise, the sections on building an aircraft. My idle daydreams are starting to take a rather odd turn actually!

Still working my through it all, I will post again when I've had time to form an opinion on whether I made the right choice.

Displacing Indian Farmers : UPA Coalition Government Prepares Blueprint
India will have 400 million

Displacing Indian Farmers : UPA Coalition Government Prepares Blueprint
India will have 400 million agricultural refugees :

By Devinder Sharma

It was on the cards. With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announcing the formation of a new rehabilitation policy for farmers displaced from land acquisitions, it is now official -- farmers have to quit agriculture.

Ever since the Congress led UPA Coalition assumed power after an angry rural protest vote threw out the erstwhile BJP led NDA combination in May 2004, the Prime Minister had initiated a plethora of new policies for the spread of industrialization.

After having laid the policy framework that allows private control over community resources – water, biodiversity, forests, seeds, agriculture markets, and mineral resources -- the UPA government finally looked at the possibility of divesting the poor people of their only economic security – a meagre piece of land holding.

“Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is an idea whose time has come,” the Prime Minister had said at an award ceremony in Mumbai sometimes back. Supported by all political parties, including the Left Front, he has actually officiated a nationwide campaign to displace farmers. Almost 500 special economic zones are being carved out ( see The New Maharajas of India http://www.stwr.net/content/view/1392/37/ ). What is however less known is that successive government’s are actually following a policy prescription that had been laid out by the World Bank as early as in 1995.

A former vice-president of the World Bank and a former chairman of Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), a body that governs the 16 international agricultural research centers, Dr Ismail Serageldin, had forewarned a number of years ago. At a conference organised by the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai a few years back, he quoted the World Bank to say that the number of people estimated to migrate from rural to urban India by the year 2015 is expected to be equal to twice the combined population of UK, France and Germany.

The combined population of UK, France and Germany is 200 million. The World Bank had therefore estimated that some 400 million people would be willingly or unwillingly moving from the rural to urban centres by 2015. Subsequent studies have shown that massive distress migration will result in the years to come. For instance, 70 per cent of Tamil Nadu, 65 per cent of Punjab, and nearly 55 per cent of Uttar Pradesh is expected to migrate to urban centres by the year 2020.

These 400 million displaced will constitute the new class of migrants – agricultural refugees.

Acerbating the crisis are the policy initiatives that promotes privatization of natural resources, take over of farm land, integrating Indian agriculture with the global economy, and moving farmers out of agriculture – in essence the hallmark of the neo-liberal economic growth model.

Agricultural reforms that are being introduced in the name of increasing food production and minimising the price risks that the farmers continue to be faced with, are actually aimed at destroying the production capacity of the farm lands and would lead to further marginalisation of the farming communities. Encouraging contract farming, future trading in agriculture commodities, land leasing, forming land-sharing companies, direct procurement of farm commodities by amending the APMC Act will only drive out a majority of farmers out of subsistence agriculture.

Although the land holding size is diminishing, the answer does not lie in allowing the private companies to replace farmers. Somehow the entire effort of the policy makers is to establish that Indian agriculture has become a burden on the nation and the sooner the country offloads the farming class the better it will be for economic growth.

Contract farming therefore has become the new agricultural mantra. Not realising that private companies enter agriculture with the specific objective of garnering more profits from the same piece of land. These companies, if the global experience is any indication, bank upon still more intensive farming practices, drain the soil of nutrients and suck ground water in a couple of years, and render the fertile lands almost barren after four to five years. It has been estimated that the crops that are contracted by the private companies require on an average 20 times more chemical inputs and water than the staple foods.

Sugarcane farmers, for instance, who follow a system of cane bonding with the mills, actually were drawing 240 cm of water every year, which is three times more than what wheat and rice requires on an average. Rose cultivation, introduced a few years back, requires 212 inches of groundwater consumption in every acre. Contract farming will therefore further exploit whatever remains of the ground water resources. These companies would then hand over the barren and unproductive land to the farmers who leased them, and would move to another fertile piece of land. This has been the global experience so far.

Allowing direct procurement of farm commodities, setting up special markets for the private companies to mop up the produce, and to set up land share companies, are all directed at the uncontrolled entry of the multinational corporations in the farm sector. Coupled with the introduction of the genetically modified crops, and the unlimited credit support for the agribusiness companies, the focus is to strengthen the ability of the companies to take over the food chain.

I have always warned that agribusiness companies in reality hate farmers. Nowhere in the world have they worked in tandem with farmers. Even in North America and Europe, agribusiness companies have pushed farmers out of agriculture. As a result, only 7,00,000 farming families are left on the farm in the United States. Despite massive subsidies in European Union, one farmer quits agriculture every minute. Knowing well that the markets will displace farmers, the same agriculture prescription is being applied in India.

A Planning Commission study has shown that 73 per cent of the cultivable land in the country is owned by 23.6 per cent of the population. With more and more farmers being displaced through land acquisitions, either for SEZ or for food processing and technology parks or for real estate purposes, land is further getting accumulated in the hands of the elite and resourceful. With chief ministers acting as property dealers, farmers are being lured to divest control over cultivable land.

Food security and food self-sufficiency is no longer the country’s political priority.

The government has very conveniently taken refuge behind an NSSO study that says some 40 per cent of the farmers have expressed the desire to quit farming. After all, what the government is facilitating is to make it easier for the farmers to abandon their land. It believes that a rehabilitation policy for the farmers therefore is the need of the hour. What is however not being seen through is that an agrarian economy like India cannot afford large-scale displacement of farmers.

It will lead to social unrest the kind of which has not been witnessed. What India needs desperately is a policy paradigm that restores pride in agriculture, stops take-over of agricultural lands, and ensures sustainable livelihoods for 600 million farmers.

India is importing wheat. Last year the government justified imports on account of lower production. This year it is being justified in the name of higher prices for farmers. In order to meet the buffer stock requirements, the government has decided to import up to 50 lakh tonnes of wheat this year. Thanks to the government’s policies, from a wheat surplus nation,
India today has been reduced to the world’s largest importer of wheat.Alarm bells began ringing in early March when, despite predictions of a bumper wheat harvest in India, the US Wheat Associates - a trade body funded by the federal government and US wheat producers - said
India will import up to 30 lakh tonnes of wheat this year. Well, not only has the government followed this diktat, but has revised this estimate by 20 lakh tonnes more as a small favour to multinational grain corporations. The rush to go for imports right now is questionable. With an additional 18 lakh hectares under wheat, the production has increased by forty lakh tonnes. Since the peak wheat procurement season is during the second half of May, there is ample time left for the government to meet its procurement target of 151 lakh tonnes. On 1st May, the Food Secretary said that stocks are adequate to last till January 2008. On 5th May, the Food and Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar announced, “Last year, the buffer stock position was only two million tonne, this time it is 4.5 million tonne. That is why I am quite comfortable about the buffer stock.”

The Minister justified the move to import wheat by adding, “However, I want to build up stock for the next year”. This, when the wheat produced is adequate to meet the country’s requirements and there is no shortage in the buffer stock. Wheat for the next season is yet to be planted but the government is apprehensive of a bad crop next year!

"If the farmer is getting a better price, as Agriculture Minister I am the happiest person. However, as a Food Minister, if I face any problem, I will import," said Pawar. He was referring to farmers getting a better price by selling to private companies thereby leaving little for the government to pick up.
This is a replay of the 2006 argument, when the Food Corporation of India (FCI) failed miserably to meet its procurement target. By offering a lower price to farmers, the government made out a case for imports, which translated to a windfall of Rs. 5,100 crores to grain corporations like the Australian Wheat Board, Glencore, Toepfer, Cargill, etc.

This year, the procurement is worse than what it was last year. By end of April, even half of the procurement target was not met, and a shortfall of 25 lakh tonnes by the end of the procurement season is possible. This is because the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs. 850 per quintal offered by the government is much lower than the prevailing market rate of over Rs. 1,000. Naturally, bulk of the wheat is being cornered by the private sector. As expected, the gains to grain corporations this year will also be much higher than 2006. Lack of rainfall in Europe, Australia and
South Africa has affected wheat production and depressed world wheat stocks to their lowest in the last 25 years. Wheat from Ukraine and Russia will hit markets only by August, while
Pakistan is still a small exporter. Major wheat exporter,
Argentina, has banned wheat export to control domestic prices.

The only players left are the US and
Canada, where the price of wheat is already up by $40 per tonne over last year. Given the global supply crunch, announcement of imports by
India will push the price through the roof, as it happened last year. While last year India paid around $207 per tonne of wheat (approximately Rs. 930 per quintal), the cost this year is likely to be upwards of $300 per tonne (or Rs. 1,200 per quintal at the current exchange rate), a rich bonus for corporations.

Instead of doling out Rs. 6,000 crores to corporations for importing 50 lakh tonnes of wheat, a hike in the MSP would have fetched an even higher price to farmers than what they are receiving from private companies and also helped FCI meet the procurement target. But then that never was the intent.
By paying a premium to grain corporations and denying a fair price to our farmers, the government has sent a clear message to farmers: they should no longer expect a guaranteed price for what they produce.

Notwithstanding the government’s claims, in reality it is building a case to dismantle the price support and procurement mechanism which are designed to protect farmers from price volatility and the poor from starvation. The Economic Survey 2005-06 states “Market for farm output continues to depend heavily on expensive government procurement and distribution systems. A shift from the current MSP and public procurement system and developing alternative product markets are essential for crop diversification and broad-based agricultural development”.

The government is following this dictum. By deliberately offering a lower MSP and importing at higher costs, the system is being covertly scrapped. The Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Act has been amended to allow private agencies to directly procure food grains from farmers. The amended Essential Commodities Act allows storage and movement of food grains. Agriculture commodities can be traded in futures markets involving speculation. No wonder multinational grain firms are cornering bulk of the food grains produced across the country.

There is more. As part of the larger game plan to shut down the FCI, the government is also toying with the idea of issuing food stamps to the Below Poverty Line families, which will reduce the food subsidy bill. There is another proposal to replace the Public Distribution System (PDS) with direct cash payments to poor families.

To reduce storage costs, the government is considering playing in the futures market in the months when it needs food grains for running the PDS - there would be no need for an MSP in such a case. The warehousing system is also being privatized. Recommendations of the consultancy firm McKinsey hired by the Food Ministry are already being implemented and FCI’s capital costs have been reduced, workforce slashed, minimum buffer stock for rice lowered, and private companies engaged in procurement.

From all this, it is clear that instead of fixing the problems at FCI, the government has decided to fix the blame on FCI and close it down. That there are major problems with the functioning of the FCI is undeniable. However, dismantling it will amount to another safety net for farmers as well as the poor, who depend on the PDS, going down. This, of course, suits the government. After all, food subsidy for the poor costs the exchequer Rs 23,986 crores during 2006-07.

The Indian State has a history of subverting procurement and price support mechanisms. Back in 2002, dairy cooperatives were on the brink of being wiped out courtesy dumping by the developed countries, which was facilitated by the State. In case of cotton, the Maharashtra government subverted the monopoly cotton procurement scheme and today the price being paid to cotton farmers is a fraction of what they received earlier. Similarly, Marketfed in Kerala, which procures pepper from farmers, is facing subversion. The cases of cardamom, coconut, cashew – in fact, almost all agri-commodities – have a common thread running through them: deliberate subversion of procurement and manipulation of support price.

The intentions of the government are quite clear – deny farmers a higher price for their produce and dismantle the price support and procurement machinery. While farmers may presently be getting a higher price by selling wheat to private players, the euphoria is unlikely to last long.
In the absence of MSP and procurement by government, there are very high chances of concentration of agri-business corporations. Once this cartel takes over, they will dictate the price to Indian farmers. With imports being made a norm, the future of wheat farmers is indeed bleak.
It is time to play a requiem for India’s wheat revolution.

Always nice to see those United academy graduates who don't make it at Old Trafford go on to forge a great career for themselves elsewhere, so it's great to see Ryan Shawcross selected in the Championship Team of the Season at tonight's annual PFA Awards ceremony after a terrific season with promotion-hunting Stoke City. Here's a guy who it would be fair to say didn't set the world alight as he progressed through the under-18 side into the reserve setup - despite having great physical traits for a centre-back and generally appearing solid enough, Shawcross just seemed to lack that extra something that would have suggested he was a first-team player in the making. Maybe in hindsight this was in no small part down to the presence of Gerard Piqué and Jonny Evans in the same group, both now centre-halves of undoubted Premiership class and earmarked as outstanding prospects from very early stages in their development, but whatever the reasons, I know personally I wasn't expecting much from him as he went out on loan to the Britannia Stadium. How wrong can you be?

The Chester-born stopper has been a revelation for Stoke in 07/08, forming a formidable partnership in defence with Leon Cort and making 43 appearances, fantastic for (barring a half-season spell in the Belgian second tier with Antwerp) his first professional campaign. What's more, he's terrorised Championship defences at set-pieces all season long, bagging himself 8 goals in all competitions. His raw height, aerial prowess and strength have always made him a formidable opponent, but it was the rapid development of the mental and tactical side of his game that led to a first England under-21 call-up and the offer of a new, improved long-term contract at United in January. While the England call was gratefully accepted, Ryan made the gutsy call to turn down the United offer and instead sign permanently for Tony Pulis' side for an initial fee of £1m, a decision Sir Alex Ferguson understood and, I suspect, was quietly impressed with - as others have shown in the past, it's very easy to spend a couple of years in the reserves on great pay and with the status of a Manchester United player while your career stagnates, and with the imperious Ferdinand-Vidic axis unlikely to be broken up any time soon and Piqué and Evans higher up the pecking order, that was likely to be Shawcross' fate had he re-signed.

Fast forward to today and Stoke sit atop the Championship needing just a point from next week's final fixture at home to Leicester to secure automatic promotion, an achievement no-one would have predicted back in August and one that will be in no small part down to Ryan Shawcross. If they can get the job done next week, everyone at United will be delighted to see him back in the Premier League so quickly and to welcome him to Old Trafford next season (not to mention delighted with the further payment due upon Stoke's promotion to the top flight that was part of the terms of the transfer).

Congratulations also to former United youngsters Jonathan Greening, included in the Championship Team of the Year after a fine season with champions-elect West Brom, and Richie Wellens, representing Doncaster in the League One side, and - although it has no direct relevance to this blog - congratulations as well to Cristiano Ronaldo on his second successive Player of the Year award and Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on their inclusion alongside him in the Premier League Best XI.
