It was men against boys really. The Finns had problems in all areas, starting from ball control. I still can't find the words to explain how easily Roman Eremenko gave the ball to the Russians so that they could start the attack that resulted in the first goal. A bit later, Petri Pasanen had a great chance of clearing the ball in front of the empty net, but he managed to kick the ball into his own net. If Pasanen would have kicked the ball anywhere else the goal could have been avoided, but no can do. Veli Lampi's own goal was very similar in principle.

The third goal was a job well done by Andrei Arshavin, but also silly defending on the part of the Finns. Arshavin strolled past both Hyypiä and Tihinen - and not passing Hyypiä first and then Tihinen, but he actually went through the space of about one metre that the full-backs had left between themselves. Just to make sure that the last player touching the ball would wear a blue shirt, Markus Heikkinen sprinted in to finish off Arshavin's effort.

It was a deserved victory for Russia, as Finland's performance was a miserable failure. They had no chances at all (well, aside the ones they used in their own end), the passing was dreadful with too many long balls and no-one had the decency to calm down the team when it was needed. Litmanen helped to some extent in holding on to the ball and trying to create chances, but he was only brought on ten minutes before the final whistle, when the score was already 2-0.

Over at Pelintekijä, Janne Oivio writes that the game was a "total disaster" and "even historical", because "it is hard to come up with a Finland game played after the turn of the century that could be compared to this game". That sounds harsh, but coming to think of it, I can't remember too many fixtures like this one either. It looked like the Finns had already wet themselves before they ever came on the pitch.

The game kicked off with a bit of an embarrassing anthem disruption from the North Curve. They kept singing while the Helsinki Police band were giving a decent rendition of Azərbaycan Respublikasının Dövlət Himni, the Azeri national anthem. They're done great stuff recently, and there was a gushing article in yesterday's Ilta-Sanomat, educational in tone about what a fan section should be about.

It'd be rubbish if that goodwill was wasted by people taking the worst parts of other countries' football cultures. I counted 44 police around the Pohjoiskaarre fans at the start of the game, but they were mostly there to watch the game rather than in anticipation of any serious trouble.

Teemu Tainio started the match, surprisingly for me, and Finland lined up like this:

Berti Vogts likes to keep things tight, and his entire objective was a 0-0 draw in Helsinki. His players were disciplined and organised, as well as niggly and cynical. They grappled with Forsell and screamed blue murder at each other whenever a Finland cross came in, as that kind of dangerous excitement should be strictly rationed in the Vogts theory of football.

Quite a few crosses did come in during the first half hour or so, as Finland dominated proceedings. Eremenko was tricky and full of ideas, always able to beat his man before spotting and executing a telling pass, Väyrynen was bright and Roiha extremely fast. The best chance of this period came when Roiha chipped the ball into the box for Väyrynen, who could only blast straight at the keeper. Roiha fizzed a shot just wide, but more often than not the ball would reach Forsell who was being wretsled to the ground by Sadigov and whoever else was nearby.

After that things settled into a Hodgsonesque quagmire of condensed play, with Finland's full-backs not breaking forward as much and Azerbaijan content to waste time. For a while it seemed like they would not be able to continue play after a free kick for either team without seeking treatment, and the crowd started booing their gamesmanship.

It felt a bit grim at half time. Finland have lost to Azerbaijan in Baku, and last time in Helsinki it came down to Sheki Kuqi's nose to save the day in the last minute. After Väyrynen's miss and Sjölund's failure to get a penalty when blatantly hauled down with only the keeper to beat, the nagging fear was that Finland would just not find a way past the most cynical opponents seen in Helsinki for a long time. The Azeris were throwing themselves in the way of anything and everything in and around the box, aware that the ground was wet and slippery and Aghayev would need protection. They looked comfortable, especially as they clearly had no desire to score a goal themselves.

Thankfully the referee gave Finland a penalty for shirt tugging in the box on 60 minutes. It looked inexplicable from where I was sitting, and the kind of thing that always happens but virtually never gets given, but nobody was that bothered (except the small party of Azeri journalists in the press box). After that Finland hung on, and when things started getting a bit frayed Baxter sent on Litmanen. He didn't do anything amazing, but he really lifted the crowd and didn't lose the ball much, so I guess you could say he steadied the ship. Baxter did, anyway.

The funniest press conference was Berti Vogts's. He came in, gave his opinions on the game, said he only had one player playing abroad whereas the Finns had only one player playing in Finland (not quite true, as both Roiha and Pohja played a role), and that he congratulated Stuart Baxter. Then a quick 'any questions? no? okay, bye' before the Azeri journalists hauled him back in to answer for his defensive strategy. Vogts was very dismissive, insulting even, saying 'you only watch football in Azerbaijan, this is completely different', without addressing the question. He then went on to say that Finland might finish third, but won't do better than that.

Baxter said there were more positives than negatives, and that he was very pleased to have gotten this game out of the way. The Russia game will allow Finland to be the 'hunter' rather than the 'hunted', and that is an easier role, according to Baxter. There will be less pressure on them, and Jonas Von Wendt suggests in today's HBL that Heikkinen will come in for Roiha to bolster the midfield. In short, it was mission accomplished and not much more. But Finland don't have to play Azerbaijan again for nearly a year, and that's something everyone can be happy about.

I went to Atlantis-JJK yesterday as well, had a great time, and will write it up later on.

Here's what I got from Baxter's press conference, although I think it is probably on Huuhkaja TV at the palloliitto site:

Question: are you happy with the result?

"We'll do everything we can to win, and if we get a draw then maybe I'll be happy after that. At the moment because of the way the game went I'm finding it very difficult to be happy with it."

On Miroslav Klose:

"He's a very difficult striker (Klose). I've got a lot of respect for him......a lot of people want strikers to be like Lionel Messi, but sometimes Klose is much more difficult to play against."

In response to an Azeri journalist who questioned Baxter's description of Azerbaijan as a 'small' match sandwiched between two big ones, against Russia and Germany:

"Don't take my English in a way it is not meant. A very famous English general once said that the most important small battle is after the big war, and that's what I meant: you have to be ready for the next game and it is often more difficult to ensure the players are ready to play the next game after such a big event."

How is Forsell doing after he was brought off?

"Forsell received a kick in the calf, there was a lot of bleeding and it became very stiff. I reckon he'll be stiff for a few days but then he should be okay."

Are you annoyed that people are asking about Russia and germany when you've put in a good performance?

"I'm happy that people talk about Russia and Germany. This is a home game, we want to win all of our home games, and we always want to attack. We did a good job tactically in trying to get at the German team whenever we could. That became more difficult as the game wore on because of the way they played. The Germans cranked up their machine and it was like a steamroller, and because of the way we defended in the last 15 minutes then maybe I'll be happy in the morning."

The German onslaught was tough to withstand, did you mark man to man or zonally?

"We zone the dangerous areas and man-mark the dangerous headers. You can zone or man-man, but if the delivery is as good as it was for the Germans and the players coming in are as good and aggressive as they were, then you've got problems. When the delivery is as good as it was, and the players coming in are as aggressive as they were, then it's very difficult to play against."

He was annoyed with the result, but couldn't smash any teacups, basically. He was more forthcoming than Hodgson, and his attempts to develop Finland's footballing identity and style - a stated aim in his reign so far - look a little clearer now. Finland will not play for a draw at home, and so Baxter has to be more confident and relaxed with his squad and in his media appearances.

"Bitter draw" was the headline in Iltalehti, "Mighty start" was what Iltasanomat went for. HBL settled on quoting Daniel Sjölund, who thought that "We lost two important points", which is about right. "Better than Hodgson" was Mikko Knuutila's verdict in Iltasanomat, and it is very difficult to argue with it. I think there was more goalmouth action in this one match than there was in an entire qualification campaign under Hodgson, and Finland's fans deserve the excitement after watching a much more cautious teamin the Euro qualifiers.

Man of the match was Mika Väyrynen, with the recently-returned-from-illness Daniel Sjölund running him a close second. Ilta Sanomat didn't think so, giving 8/10 to their top-rated players Jonatan Johansson and Markus Heikkinen, whereas HBL gave 9s to Roman Eremenko, Daniel Sjölund and Väyrynen. I couldn't find player ratings from Helsingin Sanomat, and Iltalehti's rating system is too weird to explain here.

The consensus was that we've been here before. There was a sequence on YLE's Urheiluruutu recalling the nearest miss Finland have had in qualification for a major tournament, the last-minute clusterfuck against Hungary in 1997. There is more than a passing resemblance to the third German goal last night.

So most people are disappointed, but proud of the performance.The contrast with the ultra-defensive Hodgson era was noted in all the papers, and the aggression Finland showed going forward was great to see. I was pleased that Finland managed that kind of performance without Jari Litmanen, not because he wouldn't improve the side but because the other players now know they can break teams down without him.

The crowd was fantastic. William's report has a prescient comment on the atmosphere:

A final word about the crowd. At long last, the Finns have found their singing voice.
At least this is true for the hardcore supporters’ club contingent, who have now moved to a position on the North Bank.
There were a healthy number of them and from where I was sitting they seemed in good voice, and they kept the spirits high the whole time, even after Klose’s final adjustment of the scoreline.
Furthermore, they (and others) stoutly refused to be suckered in to any Mexico waves.
Such things are fine for matches where the lack of excitement on the pitch necessitates making your own entertainment - but this was not one of those games by a long chalk.

This is an obsession among football people in Finland. The presence or absence of 'football culture' is a constant source of debate and mockery, with those who try and support the national team in a 'foreign' way occasionally derided for their affectation.

There was a poll on radio Rock's website the other day, asking 'does Finland have a football culture'. Of course it was immediately targeted by habitues of the main Finnish football forum, and that was probably the idea in the first place. Image, the Finnish 'style' mag, ran a bizarre feature a while ago about people watching English Premier League teams on TV in bars, arguing that this was somehow the main manifestation of Finnish football culture.

Well, bollocks to that. The atmosphere was brilliant last night, and all the papers I read acknowledged the fact. You can see a video of some Finland fans warming up for the match near the train station at Nelonen's website. The song the three hefty lads are singing at the end goes 'Finland is wonderful, we have sauna, booze and the axe'. A perfunctory summary of the country's development, but not an inaccurate one.

There was a good tifo before the game, and you can see many more pictures of the game and crowd at the appropriate thread on FF2. Der Spiegel has a slideshow from the match, but I think their cameras were concentrated at the end Germany were attacking. Iltasanomat's is better.

Lastly, spare a thought for poor Mario Gomez. I hadn't seen the guy play before he did this against Austria:

I expected great things when he came on against Finland, but instead he managed this:

Es war von Anfang an zu sehen, dass die DFB-Elf mit dem druckvollen Start der Finnen nicht gerechnet hatte - auch wenn Joachim Löw im Interview später Gegenteiliges behauptete. Finnland praktizierte das, was eigentlich als Löws Spiel-Philosophie gilt: Hinten sicher stehen und dann schnell nach vorne spielen. Und das funktionierte ganz passabel, brachte die unerfahrene deutsche Defensive immer wieder in Bedrängnis. Auf den ersten Blick mag man die deutsche Innenverteidigung, also Serdar Tasci und Heiko Westermann, als die Hauptschuldigen ausmachen - aber bei einem genaueren Blick stellt sich dieser Gedanke als falsch heraus. Natürlich ist es für die beiden Abwehrspieler, die insgesamt nicht einmal zehn Länderspiele absolviert haben (Tasci drei, Westermann sechs), nicht leicht, gegen die erfahrenen finnischen Legionäre zu verteidigen - aber die eigentlichen Fehler werden woanders gemacht, nämlich in der Außenverteidigung und im gesamten Mittelfeld.

Philipp Lahm und Clemens Fritz haben kein gutes Spiel gemacht. Sie waren defensiv sehr schlecht und kamen offensiv kaum zum Zug. Thomas Hitzlsperger habe ich lange Zeit nicht gesehen, lediglich bei Eckbällen und Freistößen war er präsent; aber im laufenden Spiel war der Stuttgarter, der zuletzt seine Pläne für einen dauerhaften Platz im deutschen Mittelfeld enthüllte, kaum zu sehen. Simon Rolfes trat vor allem offensiv in Erscheinung, defensiv war auch er nicht zu beobachten.
Die deutsche Abwehr hatte vor allem Probleme, wenn Finnland konterte. Rolfes und Hitzlsperger waren nicht auf ihrem Posten und nicht fähig, schnell umzuschalten und den Angriff zu unterbinden oder zumindest zu verlangsamen, was der deutschen Viererkette und vor allem den aufgerückten Außenverteidigern Zeit gegeben hätte, um die Lücken zu schließen. Aber ganz ehrlich: So wie Lahm und Fritz heute über den Platz gehechelt sind und ihre Zweikämpfe verloren haben, hätte das wohl auch nicht mehr viel genützt. Es bleibt festzuhalten, dass sowohl Deutschland als auch Finnland das Mittelfeld schnell überbrückten und den Ball zügig in die Spitze spielten.
Andreas Hinkel, der in der 82. Spielminute für Fritz eingewechselt wurde, präsentierte sich souveräner als sein Vorgänger, hatte allerdings nicht die Zeit, um in großen Aktionen zu glänzen. Aber: Seine Flanken kamen scharf und zumindest für mich ist Hinkel wieder eine durchaus reelle Option für die Nationalmannschaft. (Und vielleicht würden das alle so sehen, wenn man ihn etwa zur 70. Minute eingewechselt und er die Chance gehabt hätte, spielerisch noch etwas zu gestalten.)

Bastian Schweinsteiger und Piotr Trochowski sind offensiv eingestellte Flügelspieler, die schon fast hängende Spitzen spielen und sich nur selten effektiv an der Defensivarbeit beteiligen. Das machte es natürlich noch einmal schwerer, den Laden zusammenzuhalten. Schweinsteiger und Trochowski standen zu weit vorne, um Flanken aus dem Halbfeld zu verhindern, Lahm und Fritz erwischten einen grauenhaften Tag, reagieren zu langsam und stehen zu weit vom flankenden Gegenspieler entfernt. Die Innenverteidigung konnte nicht mehr viel machen, Robert Enke war bei allen drei Gegentoren chancenlos.
Während Deutschland auf die zweimalige finnische Führung in der ersten Halbzeit prompt reagierte, taten sich die DFB-Kicker in der zweiten Spielhälfte schwerer. In der 53. Minute erzielte der für Mikkael Forssell eingewechselte Daniel Sjölund das 3:2, erst dreißig Minuten später glich Klose aus. Man hatte das Gefühl, als ob die Deutschen nach Wiederanpfiff nicht damit gerechnet hatten, dass Finnland einfach weiterspielen und seine Chancen suchen würde. Erst als Finnland die Luft ausging, sich auf das Verteidigen beschränkte und kaum noch Entlastungsangriffe vor, erst dann gewann Deutschland Oberwasser, ließ den Ball um den finnischen Strafraum kreisen. Dennoch, drei Probleme blieben: Das erste waren die zu hohen Flanken, die von der großgewachsenen finnischen Innenverteidigung (sämtliche Baum-Witze verbieten sich hier; Petri Pasanen 1,87m, Sami Hyypiä 1,93m) problemlos kontrolliert wurden - und trotzdem haben es Schweinsteiger, Trochowski und Hitzlsperger immer wieder versucht... Das zweite Problem hörte auf den Namen Lukas. Im Gegensatz zum Liechtenstein-Spiel war heute Podolski nicht ansatzweise im Spiel. Kaum Bälle auf ihn, kaum Aktionen. Vielleicht wäre er auf einem der Mittelfeldflügel besser aufgehoben gewesen (obwohl: lieber doch nicht, da hätte er ja auch wieder nach hinten arbeiten müssen). Kein Druck im Spiel, keine zwingenden Aktionen, kaum Szenen gegen eine massive finnische Defensive. Schade. Und drittens: Die Deutschen hielten den Ball zu lange, kein Hauch von One-Touch-Fußball wehte durch das Stadion. Und das nutzte Finnland aus, indem der ballführende deutsche Spieler schnell und hart attackiert wurde. Schnellere Kombinationen hätten die Finnen ins Leere laufen lassen, doch diese Geschwindigkeit vermisste man heute im deutschen Spiel.

So, nach langen Meckereien kommen wir zum positiven Aspekt des Abends. Miroslav Klose. Ich sagte: Miroslav Klose. Ja, Miroslav Klose!

Der spielte heute abend famos. Nach der ersten verpassten Kopfball-Chance hatte ich in meinem Kopf ein weiteres erfolgloses Spiel, nach dem sich die deutsche Fußball-Presse fragt: Wann platzt der Knoten? Ob der heute zersprang, ob Klose heute wie einst Alexander der Große diesen Gordischen Knoten in seinem Kopf einfach zerschlug, das werden die kommenden Spiele zeigen. Heute sah das zumindest sehr gut aus. Vor allem das erste Tor: Eine halbhohe Flanke von Trochowski, Klose legt den Ball mit der Brust quer zur Laufrichtung des Verteidigers (Hyypiä) und schiebt ihn dann eiskalt am Tor vorbei - so, als ob es nie eine Krise gegeben hätte. Danach war sein Kampfesmut erwacht und deutlich zu sehen, er setzte sich ein und ihm gelang Vieles; etwa das 2:0, bei dem Klose seinem eigenen, von Torhüter Jussi Jääskeläinen parierten Kopfball nachsetzt und diesen trocken ins Tor bugsiert. Das 3:0 war in diesem Sinne zwangsläufig: Der Ball prallt hin und her, Deutsche schießen, Finnen werfen sich in die Schüsse. Der vierte Versuch (ich habe bei der Wiederholung mitgezählt) schließlich sitzt, Kloses drittes Tor an diesem Abend ist perfekt.
Aber: Ich sehe schon die Schlagzeile vor mir, wenn er in der nächsten Partie keinen Treffer erzielt. Eintagsfliege? Ich hoffe nicht...

Die Deutschen in der Einzelkritik

Robert Enke: Bei den Gegentoren ohne Chance. Ansonsten nicht viel gefordert, aber sehr sicher. Drei Tore sind aber für einen Torhüter keine schöne Sache, auch wenn er bei den ersten beiden Toren fast dran war.

Clemens Fritz: In grauenhafter Form. Verliert Zweikämpfe und Bälle. Ging spät raus, für meinen Geschmack hätte er auch in der Halbzeit oder zur sechzigsten Minute das Feld verlassen dürfen.
Serdar Tasci: Hatte mit seinem Innenverteidiger-Kollegen Westermann Probleme gegen die routinierten finnischen Angreifer. Da er kaum Unterstützung von den Außenverteidigern und aus dem Mittelfeld erhielt, verschärften sich diese Probleme. Die Gegentore waren zwangsläufig.
Heiko Westermann: Mit etwas höherer Fehlerquote als Tasci, aber auch er ein Opfer der Umstände. Alleine gegen drei bis vier konternde Finnen hat er eben keine Chance.
Philipp Lahm: Kein gutes Spiel des Münchners. Sah beim ersten Gegentor nicht gut aus, bewirkte auch ansonsten wenig. Ließ sich schon sehr früh im Spiel bei finnischen Angriffen ausspielen und überlaufen.

Thomas Hitzlsperger: Bei Standardsituationen da, ansonsten nicht. Muss sich vorwerfen lassen, nicht konsequent genug die finnischen Angriffe gestört zu haben.
Simon Rolfes: Versuchte immer wieder Pässe in die Spitze, die aber in der Regel an einem finnischen Abwehrbein hängen blieben. Defensiv blass.
Piotr Trochowski: Als Flankengeber gefordert und auch präsent. Sein Ball auf Klose beim 1:0 war große Klasse. Arbeitete aber - wie das gesamte Mittelfeld - zu wenig nach hinten.
Bastian Schweinsteiger: Heute die schlechte Kopie Trochowskis. Versuchte Flanken, aber ihm gelangen keine. Defensiv nicht vorhanden.

Miroslav Klose: Der beste Spieler der Deutschen. Fand den alten Willen wieder, biss und kämpfte, setzte nach, traute sich und wurde belohnt. Wenn er diese Form hält, werden alle Diskussionen um ihn innerhalb von wenigen Wochen in sich selbst zusammenbrechen.
Lukas Podolski: Nur pro forma auf dem Platz. Kaum Aktionen, kaum Druck, kaum Mut, kaum Schüsse.

Mario Gomez: Wurde eingewechselt. Gute Szene, als Pasanen seinen Ball von der Linie kratzte und so das Tor verhinderte. Hat aber noch die alte EM-Krankheit: Trifft den Ball nicht richtig, es kullert und hüpft.
Patrick Helmes: Ganz klar der zweitbeste deutsche Stürmer heute abend. Spielte nach seiner Einwechselung einen überzeugten Rechtsaußen, war oft anspielbar und sicher in der Ballbehandlung, zeigte Zug zum Tor. Ich hätte ihn gerne früher für Podolski gesehen.
Andreas Hinkel: Auch ihn hätte ich gerne früher gesehen. Konnte sich in acht Spielminuten kaum einbringen, seine Bälle kamen aber angenehm scharf. Sieht nach einem zweiten Frühling in der Nationalelf aus.
