The more I think about not spending money, the more I think of things to want:

-new wineglasses

-a white i-phone

-a condo

-a modern, tiny dwelling on a parcel of land which I will steward

- an electric car to travel the distance between condo and above-mentioned eden

-trips to Pondicherry, Rome+ Venice, Morocco to break up the routine of commuting between town and country

- even gold jewelry.

They were talking to the driver who kept pointing to a sticker on the windscreen - they finally waved us on. After asking him what happened he told me they pulled him over because of the number plates.

Cars with the number plate ending in 1 or 2 are not permitted on the roads on Monday, 3 or 4 Tuesday, 5 or 6 Wednesday, 7 or 8 Thursday and 9 or 0 Friday. As he had a tourism sticker he was exempt.

First off, it is better for you financially to use pesos. In the more than three years since we've been living in Playa del Carmen, and for all of the years we've been traveling here, only once do we remember the exchange rate of dollars to pesos falling below 10. And that was just a month or so ago and didn't last more than a few weeks. The rest of that time the rate has always been somewhere between 10 and 11. In other words, for every US dollar you exchange, you'll receive anywhere from 10 to 11 pesos.

Note: Since posting this blog entry, the exchange rate has climbed to above 11!! Today, October 2, it's 11.13 in fact! This is yet another reason to buy and use pesos!

Exchange rates can be confusing sometimes. But think of it like this: Prices for items here in Mexico are almost always listed in pesos and don't fluctuate just because a specific currency rises or falls. If a margarita costs $50 pesos, that will generally be the price regardless of the exchange rate. So if you change $100 US for pesos when the exchange rate is 10.5 to 1, you'll get $1,050 pesos in return. If you change $100 US when the exchange rate is 11 to 1, you'll get $1100 pesos. That's one or two extra margaritas for your money, depending on the exchange rate. It may not sound like much, but it adds up very quickly.

If you use US dollars to pay for items, most businesses will give you only a 10 to 1 exchange rate. Why? First off, it's to their benefit financially, since they can later take your US dollars to the bank and trade them in for more than 10 to 1 and pocket the extra pesos. Secondly, it's simply easier to figure out.

Another question people often ask is "Should I change my money ahead of time or just wait until I arrive?" The exchange rate you'll get in an airport or in the US will invariably be less than you'd get in town, so we would advise to use your dollars until you arrive, and then change money once you get to town. The best rate you'll find is at banks, but sometimes the long wait makes it more trouble than it's worth. Using your ATM card at a bank will give you a similar good rate. Just remember to factor in ATM fees, both here and at home. Mexican ATM fees are generally less than in the US. Many are around 70 cents US per transaction or less. Besides banks, you can also change money in any of the cambios (exchange houses) as well as many small stores. Check around for a good rate, though, as rates vary. Rates will generally be posted on signs outside.

And one other question we hear quite frequently is "Should I tip using dollars or pesos?" The answer to this is that it's totally up to you. Again, if the exchange rate is more than 10 to 1, which it generally is, then $1 US is worth slightly more than 10 pesos. So, the person receiving a dollar bill can exchange it for more than 10 pesos--a good deal for the person being tipped. Many people find it easier to carry around US $1 bills than Mexican 10 peso coins, obviously because coins are bulky and heavy. Remember that there are also $20 pesos notes that are great for tipping, as well, but they are harder to come by than US $1 bills.

One thing to remember is that you should never tip with foreign coins or torn bills of any kind. No place in Playa will exchange foreign coins--even banks--so foreign coins are worthless. Likewise, no one will accept damaged bills, whether Mexican or American. If you're an American traveling in Mexico and you strike up a friendship with any locals, you might ask them if they have any American coins or torn US bills, and exchange them for them. You'd be doing them a big favor, since damaged bills and coins are easily used in the US.

Here's a breakdown of the money you'll likely see in Mexico. It's easy to remember approximately how much each is worth--drop the final 0 on the peso & that's its approximate worth in US dollars:

Bills:
20 pesos - about $2 US
50 pesos - about $5 US
100 pesos - about $10 US
200 pesos - about $20 US
500 pesos - about $50 US
1000 pesos (very rare) - about $100 US

Coins:
10 pesos - the largest coin; about $1 US
5 pesos - about 50 cents US
2 pesos - just a little smaller than the 5 peso coin; about 20 cents US
1 peso - about 10 cents US
50 centavos - about a nickel
20 centavos & 10 centavos - virtually worthless & rarely used

One other thing to remember is that it's difficult to find small change in Mexico. Shopkeepers expect you to pay with the smallest bill possible. It's not uncommon to want to pay for something with a $200 pesos note (what you commonly receive in change from a bank) only to be told the business doesn't have enough change. Even banks will rarely give you small bills or coins. Don't ask us why--we still can't figure it out!

One final note about the "tipo de cambio" or exchange rate. Many stores will post signs that say "Tipo de Cambio: 10" or "Tipo de Cambio: 10.5." If you run across a store that quotes prices in US dollars, the lower the tipo de cambio, the better (just the opposite of when prices are quoted in pesos). Don't get too confused on this issue, though, as it's somewhat rare to see stores with prices quoted in dollars. However, if you do find yourself in an area where all the prices are posted in dollars, it is probably better to just use dollars, unless you are familiar enough with the current exchange rate to know that their tipo de cambio is fair. The reason for this is that any time you convert from one currency to the other in a store, the shopkeeper will figure out a way to make a little money on the exchange. Tricky, yes, but that's the way it works.

But back to pesos. Not only does using pesos put more money in your pocket, but using the local currency of the country where you're traveling enriches your travel experience. You'll feel much more a part of the country if you "do as the Romans do," and you'll be treated less like a tourist the more you steep yourself in the country's culture.

Mitre intenta pedir viajando de mano en mano, un poco de respeto entre nosotros, de los que fuman hacia los que no y viceversa, ya que el tabaco no solo es nocivo para la salúd; sino que tmb nos separa en sectores e incluso a veces hasta nos dice con quien vamos a hablar y con quienes no. El ejemplo mas cercano de esto que se me ocurre es en un trabajo cuando algunos salen a fumar y otros se quedan en el breakroom, o salen pero se aguantan el humo de los demas, y este es precisamente el punto LA TOLERANCIA. No te pedimos que no fumes, te pedimos que lo hagas para vos tratando de:

- No hacerlo en una fila o en algún tumulto de gente, por mas que estés al aire libre, nadie te lo prohibe pero serías un poco mas TOLERANTE si te fijas que no haya nadie atrás.

- Por favor aguardá hasta efectivamente estar al aire libre o EN TU CASA para fumar, ya que por ejemplo si encendés un cigarrillo 2 segundos antes de que se abran las puertas del tren para bajar, la gente que está detrás tuyo y todavía dentro del tren fumará lo que vos fumás y ni te cuento del pobre que le tocó caminar detras tuyo hasta los molinetes de salida o el bebé en brazos de la pobre mamá a tu lado. Lo mismo al subir a un transporte público o entrar a un lugar con prohibición, expela todo el humo antes de ingresar, no dé la última pitada media milesima antes de ingresar y luego expulse el humo en el interior del sitio con prohibición. Creo que no es tan dificil terminar el cigarrilo un poco antes y esperar 2 mins mas hasta salir de la acumulación de gente para fumar.

Como te dije, sabemos que cumplís con las prohibiciones y te lo agradecemos, pero no es solo cumplir, sino aportar y ayudar a que todos respiremos mejor. Ya bastante tenemos con la contaminación de los colectivos y de los autos. Estamos tratando con una enfermedad y te entendemos, me gustaría que veas lo enferma que se ve la gente con el cigarrillo en la boca esperando que se abra la puerta del tren para encender ese cigarrillo que no fuma hace 10 mins.

No seas enfermo aguantá 1 minuto mas y a una calle menos congestionada para que tu vicio no moleste tanto al otro.

Since Mexico only imports about 40 percent of it's oil, the government has been able to stave off the economic bleeding by providing massive energy subsidies and decent prices at the pump. So, while Americans have been forgoing botox injections and caramel frapuchino lattes in order to afford a tank full of unleaded, Mexicans have been blissfully filling up their vochos with government-subsidized petrol.

That's about to change - a few pesos at a time. According to Reuters, government officials have announced that starting this Friday they will start implementing a weekly 2-3 centavo increase in the price of fuel.

I'm no expert, but I can imagine this will mean having to stick your nose in a lot more armpits in the metro.

Como era de esperar, la votacion resulto en la aceptacion de dicho bono de 100 mil pesos, pero hay diputados que quieren renunciar a dicha plata.

Yo encuentro que aquellos que votaron que si, deberian dar la cara, y explicar sus razones, y aquellos que votaron que no o que quieren renunciar a dicho bono, demuestren que van a renunciar al bono, y que no solo quede en palabras.

Encuentro que esto es un bofetazo a la gente, que tiene una confianza en los legisladores de este pais, cuando salen hablando en la tele y diciendo que ellos estan ahi para defender a la gente, y para aprobar aquellos proyectos que sean buenos para el pueblo. Encuentro que es una falta de respeto, en un tiempo en donde esta todo subiendo de precio, y en donde los proyectos en el congreso que son de mayor importancia, o se rechazan, o quedan en el aire por años y años. Claro, cuando se trata de algun proyecto que los incumbe a ellos, se vota todo rapido. Como olvidar esa ley relampago que se voto y aprobo, en donde permitia que el partido politico DC pudiera inscribir a sus candidatos fuera de plazo, mientras que hay leyes como de bienestar animal o tenencia responsable que son aplazados por años, sin nunca ver la luz de la promulgacion.

Encuentro que esto tiene que aclararse, y que se diga quien fue el genio detras de dicha asignación, para decirle "Bien hecho....idiota"

Pues hoy puede que haya sido un buen día, no asistí a la clase de ingles, tengo poca tarea (Gracias a que la adelante, porque si no, tendría demasiada) solo que una noticia arruino el día, la noticia de que el vuelo de mi novia se había retrasado, y es que a pesar que solamente no la he visto 4 días, la extraño.

Pero no todo es tristeza, porque hoy mi primo cumple 10 añotes y a pesar que no llevamos la mejor de las relaciones, es divertido pasar el tiempo con él, y como no tengo hermanos y el es lo más cercano, pues asistiré con gusto a la fiesta.(Me gustan las fiestas)

Y bueno, ahora no les dejare un video musical, les dejare algo que quizá les haga reír.

Currency symbols are almost invisible. We see them everywhere, but we rarely give them a thought, so let's take a look at two of them.

Why is the symbol for the British pound sterling a stylized italic upper case L? It's an abbreviated form of libra, Latin for pound or "pair of scales." Libra is also the source of the abbreviation for the measurement lb.

Why is the dollar sign an S with one or two bisecting vertical rules? This all-American glyph is actually an immigrant. It comes to us from the Spanish peso. A stylized Ps, was an abbreviation for pesos in the New World. In English, it was first recorded in the 1770s in manuscripts and is seen in print in the early nineteenth century.

The end of the month paycheck always evaporates much faster than the one we get mid-month. Everything's due at the end of the month.. power, water, phone, cable, the nanny's salary. We just happened to be out of everything at home too. We needed everything from baby formula to toothpaste to cooking oil to toilet paper. I'm fortunate not to be the only one providing for the family.. there's two of us and thank God he gets paid more than I do.

Days like this make me look forward to going back to the States. I may be happier here in the Philippines in general but sometimes it just isn't worth the stress I go through financially. Hell, I could make my monthly salary here in 2 nights of waiting tables in Georgia but of course, I can't deny that even though I make dollars there, I spend dollars too. I wish I could make as much money here as I make in the States. I'll be living so comfortably. *sigh*

So yeah, I'll be going back to Atlanta in 57 days. My flight is on Sept. 28 and I'll be flying with my little 17-month old toddler. I wonder how I'll be able to manage him being on my lap for a 17-hour flight. It'll be quite the experience I'm sure.

And this is the just the front page of the US news. I haven't even clicked into the more in-depth coverage. Of course on the front page of CNN is news about the pregnant marine killer, how the US government is borrowing more money, how people are getting their homes foreclosed on. The US has really turned into a big ole' pile of shit since GW took office.

The truth is that I love my country, now more than ever. Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder, but I really do love my country. Not the administration, or the crime, or the way we treat our social workers and teachers. I don't love our war on drugs or the war in the middle east. I hate the celebrity culture and the way that sports figures make millions of dollars while people are starving right there in America.

I love our freedoms (although honestly, I feel more free on a day to day basis here), but most of all I love the ideals of the country. I love that we give the message that you can do or be anything you want to. We encourage creativity and individuality. I love the land. America is beautiful.

I believe in my heart of hearts that America is headed for a civil war and it makes me sad. At some point people will say, "enough" and take back the government, to remind them that they are supposed to be FOR the PEOPLE, by the people. Not big business, not oil. When enough people have lost their homes and their jobs, when there's no more food on the tables, when the gap gets wide enough between the uber-wealthy and the poor, the people will stand up and lay some serious smack down.

Oh, and since I'm sure you don't keep track of this stuff... the peso is now headed towards being stronger than the dollar. Remember back when it was 3000:1? Then more recently it was 11:1, then 10:1 and now 9:1. Pretty soon, peso=dollar. What do you think about that?

Recién entonces puede relajarse un poco hasta que se sienta renovado para volver a las trincheras de auspiciamiento de mas frontales.

Desafortunadamente, algunos autores y líderes bien intencionados han causado un horrible perjuicio a nuestra profesión haciéndole creer a los nuevos distribuidores que el éxito en nuestra industria requiere menos esfuerzo real. La gente que enseña con esa filosofía lo hace inocentemente, porque eso es lo que recibieron de sus uplines, que a su vez aprendieron eso de libros y cintas.”

¡Estupenda noticia!!!, WordPress para iPhone!!!… excepto por una cosa, no tengo iPhone, de hecho, apenas llego a un austero W300i que hace más de un año me costo $2,800.00 pesos mexicanos y que ahora se puede conseguir a tan sólo $1,600.00 pesos y bajando. Todo aquel que desee encarecidamente tener el mejor celular sin duda considera el iPhone, el problema es que no es rentable para navegar en internet, no tiene opción para grabar videos y su camara, para su nivel, es de muy pocos megapixeles.

En lo personal me conformo con el iPod Touch, de preferencia el de 32 gigas por favor, tal vez no pueda hacer llamadas ni tomar fotos con el pero bueno, el carecer de estos elementos es una muy buena excusa para poder hacerse de un celular que además de que por logica ofresca la posibilidad de hacer llamadas, también incluya si no la mejor camara del mercado, si una más decente. En fin.

Manila, 29 aprile

Sul jet di ritorno da Baler, mi sono messa a sedere al posto della seconda fila. La grande finestra laterale era come una specie di film proiettato solo per me. Volavamo appena sopra l'acqua: i contorni leggeri dei pesci in trasparenza sembravano giganteschi dipinti grigio-azzurri di Paul Klee. Poi siamo arrivati sulla costa: potevo vedere i canali e file e file di spiazzi ben delineati, dove si fa il sale attraverso l'evaporazione dell'acqua del mare. A un certo punto ci siamo trovati in un sandwich di nuvole, sopra e sotto di noi, l'aereo, le cime delle montagne  e il disco dorato  del sole  erano  in uno spazio chiaro nel mezzo. Dalla radio giungevano gracchianti e forti le disposizioni del traffico aereo, come se tutti gli aerei della zona si preparassero ad atterrare prima del buio, per il coprifuoco voluto dalla legge marziale.

Sembra che ci siano sempre più parallelilsmi  tra il carattere di Kurtz  e quello  di Francis. C'è come un delirio  di potenza di fronte alla perdita di ogni cosa, come l'eccitazione della guerra quando quando uno uccide e corre il rischio di essere ucciso. Francis, ha corso il rischio maggiore nel fare il film come lo sta facendo. Sente contemporaneamente il fascino di essere il creatore/regista e la paura di un completo fallimento.

Manila, 1 maggio

Oggi è la festa del lavoro . Nessuno lavora salvo Francis e i montatori. Sono da basso, piegati sopra la moviola a guardare tutto il materiale girato frino a ora. C'è roba per circa 10 ore e loro per adesso sono giù da più o meno 4 ore. Visto che è la festa del lavoro, il presidente Marcos ha fatto delle concessioni al movimento dei lavoratori. Sui giornali di oggi c'è scritto  che ha portato il salario minimo a Manila a 10 pesos il giorno, più o meno 1,25 dollari, e il lavoro agricolo a 7pesos al giorno.

Mentre eravamo fuori a pranzo, Francis ha cominciato a raccontare quelle sue storie terrificanti di quando stavano quasi per sparargli mentre lavorava a Il Padrino; poi ha raccontato tutti gli intrighi interni e la storia di un vero mafioso che era descitta nel film. Mi sono messa a guardare attraverso il piano di vetro della tavola: c'erano milioni di minuscole formiche fra i piedi di noi tutti.

I bambini sono da basso a giocare a Monopoli, hanno la versione francese del gioco: gli Champs Elysées sono al posto di Park Place, Roman sta traducendo il cartellino che assomiglia a Community Chest. Marc sta facendo i conti con il suo calcolatore delle rendite degli alberghi in franchi. Noi non giocavamo certo in questa maniera.

Qui ci sono degli enormi scarafaggi marroni, pare che non siano dannosi, ma mi danno un gran fastidio. L'altra sera, quando ho portato Sofia in bagno, ce n'era uno grosso che passeggiava dietro il lavandino, proprio sopra lo spazzolino da denti.
