I first heard the news on Saturday morning while sitting at the Breakfast Buffet at the Wynn in Las Vegas and I'm still shocked. The good news is that reports today state that both Barker and DJ AM are expected to make a full recovery from the accident.

[caption id="attachment_1208" align="alignright" width="320" caption="Credit: Associated Press"][/caption]

From Fox News:

Two of the musicians' close friends and the plane's pilot and co-pilot were killed when a Learjet crashed on takeoff at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina.

Dr. Fred Mullins, medical director of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, said the two suffered second- and third-degree burns but had no other injuries from the crash and are in overall good health.

Barker was burned on his torso and lower body and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was burned on an arm and a portion of his scalp, according to a statement from the musicians' families released by the hospital. Such injuries can take a year to fully heal, however Mullins said he didn't think it would take that long.

Investigators said they want to speak with Barker and Goldstein for their accounts of the crash, including how they survived. One witness said he discovered the musicians in the street near the fiery wreck as they frantically tried to douse their burning clothes.

Barker and Goldstein had performed together under the name TRVSDJ-AM at a free concert in Columbia on Friday night. The show, which included performances by former Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell and singer Gavin DeGraw, drew about 10,000 people to a neighborhood near the University of South Carolina.

[caption id="attachment_1209" align="alignleft" width="320" caption="Credit: Associated Press"][/caption]

Barker, 32, was one of the more colorful members of the multiplatinum-selling punk rock band Blink-182, whose biggest album was 1999's CD "Enema of the State" and sold more than 5 million copies in the United States alone.

After Blink-182 disbanded in 2005, Barker went on to form the rock band (+44) -- pronounced "plus forty-four." He also starred in the MTV reality series "Meet the Barkers" with his then-wife, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler. The show documented the former couple's lavish wedding and home life. Their later split, reconciliation and subsequent breakup made them tabloid favorites.

Goldstein, 35, is a popular DJ for hire who at one time was engaged to Nicole Richie and dated singer/actress Mandy Moore. While he became a gossip favorite for his romances, he draws respect from music aficionados for his DJ skills.

Jane's Addiction's 1988 breakthrough album, Nothing's Shocking, had a seismic impact on the music scene of the late 80s. With a bracing combination of metal, punk, and psychedelica, coupled with lead singer Perry Farrell's banshee-in-a-windtunnel vocals, the arrival of Jane's Addiction put what would soon be co-opted as "alternative" on the map. Rising from the depths of Venice Beach's junkie-surfer demonade, Jane's Addiction freely mixed the decadent with the innocent, and paved the way for the mainstream success of bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana. After Nothing's Shocking, Jane's Addiction released another classic album, Ritual de Lo Habitual (featuring the hit "Been Caught Stealing"), founded the Lollapalooza festival, and openly celebrated a bacchanalian lifestyle that blurred all lines of gender and sexuality. Drawn from original interviews with the band (including Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro), their friends, and musical colleagues, Whores will take readers through the early days of the band to their drug-addled breakup and eventual triumphant reunion with the 2003 release of their album Strays. Along the way, providing a candid, sometimes disturbing glimpse into the dynamic alternative rock scene of Los Angeles in the '80s and '90s.

Travis, the drummer from Blink-182, and DJ AM, a singer-songwriter who was once engaged to Nicole Richie, were in a plane crash late last night. Four people died in the crash, but Travis and DJ AM (whose real name is Adam Goldstein) survived. Both are in critical condition, according to their spokespeople. They have been touring together as TRVSDJ-AM and played a show that day in Columbia, South Carolina. Read the news story here.

Get well soon, guys. Please.

UPDATED: There has been much speculation as to the other people who died. Two were the pilots, but the names of the other two have not yet been released. It has been confirmed that Gavin DeGraw was NOT one of the passengers, nor was Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction.

My mother in-law lives in Columbia South Carolina and she called us early this morning saying that the local news station is reporting a plane clash that involved former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. It was a private jet heading to California and that two were injured and six four died.

Travis Barker was one of the injured and Kennedy says that DJ AM was the other survivor. The two were in town for a concert with Gavin Degraw and Perry Ferrall but Gavin Degraw and Perry FerralI were not involved in the crash. I also read on Perez Hilton that Travis is in critical condition and has been transferred to a burn center in Augusta Georgia.

Obviously our thoughts and prayers for everyone involved and I'll post a link when I can find more here is a link to a Columbia TV station that has the complete story along with video of the crash site.

Chicago, USA recently held it's Lollapalooza music festival in the open air of Grant Park. The 3-day event, founded by Perry Farrell (front man for alternative rock band Jane's Addiction) is held annually in Chicago and Los Angeles. The Chicago event brought together a range of musicians from different genres. This year's line up included Kanye West, Radiohead, Rage against the machine, Gnarls Barkley and many more.

I just had to share this. In my recent post about Lollapalooza, I mentioned that Perry Farrell and Slash got up and performed on the Kidzapalooza stage together on the Sunday and I hoped that someone had a camera trained on the stage and that I'd get to see the footage. Well, someone did and I have. And here's a sample for those of you who may not have seen it yet:

Yep, that's Slash and Perry performing "Superstition". Classic. Unfortunately the person filming didn't get Perry's introduction to the song which reportedly (according to the Time Out Blog) went something like this:

"This first song is about superstition, and how you maybe shouldn’t be afraid to check out creepy things like voodoo."

Just classic. I'm not sure how parents in the audience felt about their kids being encouraged to engage in an exploration of religions that involve, well, unusual practices, but I had to laugh. There were a lot more comments along those lines from Perry as they went onto play "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and the Jane's Addiction classic "Jane Says". They also played "Mountain Song", but I haven't been able to find a video of that yet.

Entertainment Weekly wrote a hilarious article about the set, which I'll link to when I find it again.

Jeff Tweedy's appearance (from the band Wilco) at Kidzapalooza on the Friday was another major highlight for both the grown ups and the kids. Here's a video of him performing "Hummingbird":

I love the beginning when he says "hell" and corrects himself with "H-E-double toothpicks", with the sudden realization that he's in front of a bunch of children. LOL. From what I've heard from those who were there, it was an absolute blast and a great weekend.

So, the decision has been made - I'm going to Lollapalooza next year. I've already officially arranged it and so will be in Chicago in August in 2009 at one of the biggest music festivals on the planet.

As a result, I'm now open to offers from any music mags in Australia - if you want to hire my services, I'll be happy to write for you while I'm there (see an example of my previous life as a music reviewer/interviewer here). Up-to-the-minute articles written on site at the the world-famous Lollapalooza music festival? Too good to pass up. I'm also taking a digital camera and a DV camera with me, and used to be a radio and TV presenter, so any radio or TV offers will be considered as well. Drop me a line if you're interested in having someone on the scene who not only loves music (and is a trained musician), but also has a background in journalism. And yes, that would be me.

For a full round up of Kidzapalooza this year, including a large collection of videos, you'll find everything you could ever want to know at the official website. I'm now off to watch Perry and Slash perform "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", courtesy of YouTube. You've gotta love the 'Net ...

The dynamic duo (Brian and I) covered Lollapalooza for the fourth time this weekend and we've vowed never to cover it again.

There were too many people at the festival this year, which sold out on both Friday and Saturday, something which hasn't happened before. Total festival attendance was estimated to be about 275,000; which just meant there were that many more drunken idiots running around. Not to mention high individuals causing all sorts of mayhem, like the one I saw taken down by 6, not 1, 6 security guards for dancing in a disorderly manner.

The line-up was uninspired with many acts from previous years returning to the corporately sponsored stages. Acts like Iron & Wine, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, and G. Love and Special Sauce which has been on the roster every year since the festival made its home in Chicago. The only bands that piqued my interest this year were Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine, due to the fact that neither play very often and I have never seen either live. However, I was unable to truly enjoy either band's set due to the massive amounts of people pressing in against each other on the south end of Hutchinson Field and chose to retire early both Friday and Saturday nights to avoid the mass exodus via the El; which I wish hadn't been necessary.

The overall bourgeoisie vibe of the festival also detracted from the festival's appeal. While its always been a bit high in price, this year took the cake. With weekend passes selling for around $200 and daily passes selling for $80. The infamous cabanas intended for the disgustingly rich also multiplied this year, as did the "Lolla lounges", with the cabanas setting concert-goers back some $30,000 and Lolla lounge passes setting them back $850, which is ridiculous. As usual the corporate sponsors abounded and the presence of art, sideshows and organizational booths was even more invisible than in years past. Sure things were a little bit "greener" this year, but considering the fact Dominick's, Target, etc. are pushing "green" solutions just shows how unoriginal and safe this cause is.

In our current political climate I would have liked to hear and see more about the issues, but the only band that really said anything was Rage Against the Machine and we missed it cause we were already on the Red Line on our way home. I hope the City of Chicago gets to see some of the dollars this festival raked in. Part of the proceeds do go to the Chicago Parkways Foundation, which makes sense seeing as how festival goers make a mess of Grant Park, but I hope the city sees more than just that.

Finally, there were more media people present at the festival than ever before, which made it harder to get a good spot to take pictures. Rules were stricter for media people this year and bands were more premadonnaish with NIN requesting that photographers sign some sort of release form and Radiohead's publicist hand selecting photographers from "approved" magazines without giving anyone a head's up, which meant I was unable to shoot them, since the publication I was shooting for is apparently not cool enough (at least not in Radiohead's publicist's eyes). Limits were also placed on photographers shooting Rage Against the Machine, but not by the band. In this case it was the media company running the event which made the decision to limit the number of photographers in the pit to 25 for safety reasons, which made sense. Luckily I was one of the 25 and got to shoot the band, though we were kicked out early due to the riotous crowd, which we had to fight our way through once out of the pit.

All in all it wasn't a very fun time. We opted out of the third day of the festival to go to a hardcore show instead, is that bad? I don't know, maybe we've covered Lollapalooza too many times, maybe I'm just getting too old for this kind of stuff, or maybe its not me and the festival truly sucked and Perry Farrell is a tool. Regardless, I am glad that I had the opportunity to cover it when I did.

I never thought I’d say it, but I think I’m prepared to travel to another country just

I never thought I'd say it, but I think I'm prepared to travel to another country just to be part of a music festival. Those who know me know that I'm more likely to spend an evening in a piano bar or enjoy watching an intimate performance in a small club or seeing an independent band in a pub, than attend a full-blown rock concert. In fact, despite loving music and seeing bands live, the only major rock concert I've attended was Pink Floyd (I was 17) and the only music festival I've attended was The Big Day Out (and I was a member of the press for that one, so I don't even know if that counts).

But there's just something about Lollapalooza.

It could be that as I'm the designer for Kidzapalooza (the kids stage at Lollapalooza), I've been living, sleeping and breathing the festival for the past three days (well, as much as one can via the internet from a country on the other side of the world from where the action is happening) and, as a result working on Chicago time for the most part. I've watched more bands (via live feeds and uploaded YouTube vids) in the past 72 hours than I have for the whole year, read more music reviews and articles than I care to admit to and looked at galleries of photos. And it just seems like it's far to much fun to not be a part of.

Here's an example. It's now 6am over here. I haven't been to bed yet, as I've been updating the Kidzapalooza site with the latest press, reviews, etc and keeping tabs on their blog. An hour ago I got an email from Tor (the Kidza organizer) to say that he was currently on stage (he's also a musician) and that Perry Farrell (Lollapalooza founder) would be appearing on the Kidzapalooza stage with Slash (yes, THAT Slash) at 3.15pm Chicago time.

How mad is that?! Now, THAT'S something I'd like to see. I just hope someone's got a video camera trained on the stage right now. And that I get to see the footage.

With eight stages showcasing 130 performers over three days - it's one major music event. Radiohead closed Day 1 (Friday) and Rage Against The Machine closed out Day 2 (with a bit of a riot from what I've read in the various papers and blogs). Tonight it's Nine Inch Nails who could be causing a ruckus at Grant Park. Not that I want to get caught up in all that craziness, but I just keep feeling like I'm missing out on something.

Apart from anything else, I'm hearing such good feedback about Kidzapalooza, I reckon I could spend the whole festival there and still get great value for money. While the line up is predominately kid-friendly performers, headline acts have a habit of turning up for impromptu sets - just to be part of the great vibe at the Kidza stage.

So, if I'm not in Melbourne in August next year, it will be because I decided that the lure of Lolla is just too strong and I have packed my bags and departed for Chicago.

I think I'll book my tickets now.
