As with any decent story related to the Bible, Timeexhibites a good deal of ignorance concerning scholarship. In the second paragraph, they include this summary of scholarship:

Scholars debate [the ark of the covenant’s] current locale (if any): under the Sphinx? Beneath Jerusalem’s Temple Mount (or, to Muslims, the Noble Sanctuary)? In France? Near London’s Temple tube station?

No serious scholar I know has ever put forth any of these theories. It is only amateurs and treasure hunters with more imagination than evidence who support such ideas. Yet Parfitt cannot be classed with such dilettantes. In the 1980s, he isolated a link between the priestly lineage of the Jews and a tribe called the Lemba in Africa. The Lemba claimed to be a lost tribe of Israel, and genetic evidence suggests that there just may be a connection.

Parfitt claims that the ark of the covenant is somehow connected to a drum-like object called the ngoma lungunduthat the Lemba have. The article lists a number of similarities between the ngoma and the ark, including the facts that both are holy, both are carried on poles, and both emit fire against God’s enemies.¹ The main problem, however, is that the article he found does not match biblical descriptions of the ark.

What Parfitt finds is a drum which he connects to the Ark, and this based upon the link he claims to have found between the Jews and the Lemba tribe in Africa.  Blue Cord, I believe, rightly concludes:

The artifact he describes has only superficial connections with the ark of the covenant. Perhaps the Lemba are a branch of the tribe of Levi, and perhaps they built their own type of ark after fleeing from Jerusalem in 587 BCE. But the ngoma has so few similarities to the ark of the covenant that it is untenable to think that this tribe possessed the ark of the covenant at any point in their history.

So, it seems, we're back at square one in regards to the actual location of the Ark, if it still exists at all.  I'd love to hear from those who are knowledgeable on biblical archaeology on the recent scholarship and theories on the possible location of the Ark and this recent article from Times.  What do you think?

Vorig jaar werd de bestseller “The Sign and Seal: The Quest for the Lost Ark of the Covenant” van journalist Graham Hancock veertien jaar na publicatie voor het eerst in Nederlandse vertaling uitgegeven. In “Het teken, het zegel en de wachters – zoektocht naar de verdwenen Ark des Verbonds” besluit Graham dat de felbegeerde Ark, waarin de steen met de 10 geboden van Mozes zou zijn opgeborgen, in Ethiopië moet gezocht worden. Menelik, de zoon van de legendarische koningin van Sheba en koning Salomon, zou de Ark naar Ethiopië hebben gebracht. De Ark bevindt zich volgens Hancock weldegelijk – zoals de Ethiopiërs geloven – bij de kerk Onze Vrouwe Maria van Zion in Axum. Helaas kunnen wetenschappers deze these niet checken. Niemand – behalve een heilige monnik – mag de Ark zien. Zelfs de patriarch van de Ethiopische kerk heeft het heilige voorwerp nog nooit mogen aanschouwen.

De theorie dat de Ark zich in Ethiopië zou bevinden is omstreden en veel andere visies zijn de revue gepasseerd. Nog mogelijke verblijfplaatsen zijn een grot in de buurt van de Dode Zee, een geheime grot onder het tempelplein in Jeruzalem en het Vaticaan. Maar de Ark zou zich volgens sommigen ook in Ierland of Frankrijk bevinden.

Vandaag verschijnt het relaas van de zoektocht van de wetenschapper Tudor Parfitt. Hij verwerpt in “The lost Ark of the Convenant: Solving the 2500 year old mystery of the fabled biblical Ark”

de andere thesen en komt tot geheel andere bevindingen. Volgens hem ligt de Ark al jaren in één van de stoffige rekken in het Queen Victoria Museum in Harare (Zimbabwe). De Lemba, die van Joodse afkomst zouden zijn, zouden de Ark hebben meegenomen toen ze Jeruzalem verlieten. Onderzoek wees uit dat het om een 14^de eeuwse replica gaat, waarin volgens Parfitt een stukje van de oorspronkelijke Ark verwerkt is - maar dat helaas weggerot is.

Parfitt is professor Joodse Studies aan de prestigieuze Londense School of Oriental and African Studies en doet al lang onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de Joden in Afrika en Azië. Hij wordt in de media – net als Hancock trouwens –

nogal eens vergeleken met Indiana Jones, vanwege zijn avontuurlijke instelling. Het boek is volgens de uitgever trouwens doorspekt met spanning en avontuur. Opvallend is ook de vrij ongebruikelijke en gemediatiseerde manier om met wetenschappelijke resultaten naar buiten te komen.

Maar zijn onderzoeksresultaten worden met de nodige scepsis onthaald. “Het hele verhaal klinkt mij erg onwaarschijnlijk in de oren", aldus Shimon Gibson, een Britse archeoloog. "Er zitten veel te veel haken en ogen aan,” voegt hij eraan toe. “Wanneer de Lemba inderdaad afstammen van Joden of Israëlieten, is het mogelijk dat zij een herinnering maakten aan de echte ark. Maar de gevonden replica hoeft daarmee nog niet meer te lijken op de echte ark dan hedendaagse afbeeldingen in kinderbijbels of in het Bijbels Museum,”

aldus de Nederlandse theologieprofessor Paul. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk wordt ook de Lemba-theorie (bij gebrek aan voldoende bewijzen) in de gaanderij van alle mogelijke theorieën rond het onderwerp geklasseerd.
