La "Travesía" de Juan Luis Guerra puso al Madison a bailar

Nueva York.- La noche del viernes no llovió café en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, pero sí los aplausos para el cantautor dominicano Juan Luis Guerra, que retornó a este escenario como parte de la gira más grande que cumple por EE.UU. en los últimos diez años.

"La travesía" es el espectáculo que lo trajo a esta ciudad, donde radica el mayor número de dominicanos fuera de su país y que disfrutaron junto a miles seguidores de los viejos éxitos cosechados por este artista a lo largo de sus 24 años de carrera, así como los más recientes de su álbum "La llave de mi corazón".

Este último disco, que incluye la canción "La travesía", que da título a la gira, le ha valido seis premios Grammy Latino y uno anglo, así como tres Billboard, cinco Cassandra, el más importante que se concede en su país, y dos Lo Nuestro.

Como suele ocurrir en cada una de sus presentaciones, el público cantó y bailó, seducido por los cadenciosos merengues y la bachata, ritmos que identifican a República Dominicana, y que Guerra ha llevado a importantes escenarios en el mundo.

Su presentación estuvo precedida por la banda dominicana Calor Urbano, formada a finales de 2002 y que fusiona los ritmos latinos con soul, funk, rock, disco y Hip-Hop, entre otros géneros.

La banda había abierto antes para Juan Luis Guerra en la Feria Internacional de Barquisimeto (Venezuela) en 2007, e hizo lo propio para la presentación de la gira "Blanco y Negro" de Ricky Martin en República Dominicana.

Al inicio del concierto, el público vio en las gigantescas pantallas de la sala un avión que despegó, voló y aterrizó, presumiblemente en Nueva York, y del cual bajó el cantante para entrar en un elevador.

La figura del cantautor y su excelente banda 4.40, bajo la dirección de la pianista Yadira Rosado, aparecieron en el escenario luego de que se levantara un telón con el mapa de las Américas, en medio de un prolongado aplauso con el público de pie.

Mientras, cuatro bailarines caminaban de un lado a otro con maletas y vestidos con los chalecos naranja que identifican al personal de seguridad en los aeropuertos.

"Buenas noches, gracias por el cariño de siempre y por acompañarme en esta travesía", fueron las primeras palabras del intérprete, que continuó con "Vale la pena" y "A pedir su mano" y ya para este tercer tema todo el mundo bailaba en el Madison, donde estuvieron representados todos los países latinoamericanos.

El público escuchó, además, el éxito "Ojalá que llueva café", al tiempo que en las cinco gigantescas pantallas instaladas en el escenario se proyectaban imágenes de niños dominicanos, así como de artistas como Ricky Martin, Juanes y Ricardo Montaner, que tienen fundaciones de ayuda a la infancia.

Le siguieron la salsa "Canción de amor" de su más reciente álbum, así como las canciones "Búrbujas de amor", "El Niágara en bicicleta", "La bilirrubina" y no podían faltar las de corte religioso como "Las avispas".

Este cantante ha vendido más de 20 millones de discos y ha ganado importantes premios, a los que se sumará el de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, Ciencia y Cultura (UNESCO) como artistas de la paz, que recibirá el próximo 15 de septiembre en Francia.

Guerra, que comenzó su gira el pasado 12 de julio en el escenario del American Airlines Arena en Miami, al que le siguió Orlando y Atlanta, también se ha destacado fuera de los escenarios por su labor humanitaria en favor de los niños discapacitados de su país.

Luego de hora y media de concierto, Guerra se despidió del público, que no se movió de sus asientos, lo que lo obligó a regresar para interpretar un popurrí de bachatas y el tema "Si tú no bailas conmigo", que le inspiró su esposa, Nora, con quien celebró recientemente 24 años de matrimonio.

Guerra, quien finalizó su presentación con el merengue "Como yo", continuará su "travesía" mañana en Connecticut y luego viajará a California para tres conciertos. En septiembre llegará a España y posteriormente viajará a Francia y Japón, entre otros países.

Los ladrones siguen haciendo de las suyas. Ayer le tocó el turno al merenguero Kinito Méndez. Alrededor de las 12:30 del mediodía los pillos rompieron el cristal de la Hummer del artista y cargaron con documentos personales, el máster de su nuevo disco, chequera y contratos internacionales.
El hecho ocurrió en el parqueo de la Plaza Metropolitana, en la avenida Johnn F. Kennedy esquina Ortega y Gasset, mientras Kinito se encontraba reunido con su manager, Carlos Valenzuela y otros empleados en su oficina.

NUEVA YORK.- Salma Hayek rompió su compromiso de bodas con el empresario francés Francois-Henri Pinault, dijo una representante de la estrella mexicana el viernes. La pareja anunció sus planes de boda en marzo del 2007, unos meses antes de tener a su hija Valentina Paloma Pinault.

"Anunciamos con tristeza que el compromiso entre Salma Hayek y Francois-Henri Pinault ha sido cancelado", dijo la publicista Cari Ross en un comunicado. "No se harán más comentarios".

Hayek, de 41 años, ha protagonizado en Hollywood cintas como "Frida", "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" y "After the Sunset".

Además, es una de las productoras ejecutivas de la versión anglo de "Betty la fea", "Ugly Betty" de ABC, y directora ejecutiva de Ventanazul, una compañía de producción que formó con la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.

Pinault es el presidente de la compañía de artículos de lujo PPR SA, propietaria de marcas como Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga y Puma.

Al parecer la presentadora de televisión Nikauly De La Mota entendió que del canto no vivirá en el país, así lo dijo anoche en el programa “No hay 2 sin 3” donde explicó que no tiene que pegarse en la República Dominicana ya que puede ser animadora aquí y cantar en Haití que se encuentra al lado.

Entre otras cosas explicó que el periodista Joseph Cáceres malinterpreto las declaraciones de ella en las que decía en una entrevista reciente que criticaba a las personas que sin tener talento hacían televisión y les calificó de “Fantoches” y finalmente justificando que no tiene talento para el canto habló del grupo Mexicano RBD al indicar que ellos no cantan, que son un fenómeno del marketing y que en los escenarios doblan, aunque expresó ser admiradora del grupo.

Celebrities are now facing the truth, and it isn't pretty. Gossip has turned it up a notch, and now there is nowhere to hide. Big paparazzi agencies have patched up their main weakness -- failing to be anywhere, anytime. Before, agencies would hire a small group of professional photographers and brief them of where the stars would be, but it was a double-edged sword. The pictures they got we're high quality and high definition, and worthy of the front page of any magazine to hit the shelves. But their main weakness was their inability to be everywhere, and it cost them. For example, when they were taking pictures of one celebrity coming out of church, they were risking missing another, for example, getting arrested or something more newsworthy or, as the kids would say in more of an "OMG" demand. But this hole was covered recently, as some person in high places somewhere in a gossip agency had a genius idea: give disposable cameras to thousands of people in a big city, say, New York or Los Angeles, and have them scour the streets for celebrities, take a picture, and then hustle back to the office where they started and get a reward, ranging in cash by how good the picture was, and who it was taken of. One paparazzi boss is even giving rewards to the general public for snap happy cell phone pictures. Darryn Lyons, founder of Big Pictures, set up a mobile phone website that lets you upload cell phone pictures to his agency directly from your phone. That's why you are now accustomed to seeing cover shots on gossip magazines that are obviously not professional, some even blurred or distorted. This new style has taken the stars by surprise, people who claim to be "devoted fans" now can whip out their Blackberry and get a picture of them which the next day may be on the cover of OK or US. But its not like the celebrities aren't going down without a fight. Angelina Jolie made a valiant effort to escape the never ending US paparazzi attack force by making an escape to (where else) but Namibia (for those who aren't geography buffs, its in Africa) to have her baby. She and husband Brad Pitt went to this remote country for the birth for a number of reasons, but a big one being they wanted to get rid of all paparazzi. During the period of the birth, all traces of gossip in Namibia were banished and the country made sure no Americans could enter the country that could be a paparazzi. And with the help of closing off an entire country, no press could cover the story. All the poor paparazzi agencies could find was one small leak from a Namibian nurse who gave the plain remarks "She is a healthy baby." Her remarks were anonymous because she was not authorized to release any information. And in truth, no one was, not even Namibian officials said a word about the birth. Jolie's counter-punch to the growing paparazzi in the US was a ray of hope to all celebrities, but as the War on Paparazzi continues, all a curious spectator can do is watch, and laugh.

Last month, Paris and Britney Spears topped a poll in Australia for the celebrities youngsters like least. Paris and Lindsay Lohan have consistently won negative polls in America as well.

There is a lesson to be learned in that. Just because you have it, meaning fame and some money, doesn’t mean you should flaunt it.

No, I’m not referring to the public being envious, as most stars believe in their jaded little worlds. You may be surprised to learn, many members of the public don’t want to be like certain stars.

If you party your life away, have run-ins with the law and engage in acts of public lewdness, people will think that’s all there is to you. Look what you’ve given them as a reference point.

The sad thing is there are people in Hollywood encouraging young stars in the mainstream to behave in an inappropriate manner for attention and so-called free publicity, which is terrible advice. That free publicity comes at a price when said stars’ names and lives are destroyed.

One should want to be appropriately recognized for one’s work, through the correct avenues, not because you behave in a terrible manner for the paparazzi.

Promiscuity is encouraged as well. Then these girls get saddled with the image of being harlots. Who needs that. Not to mention, so many stars have STDs because of the constant stream of sex partners.

It sets a terrible example for young kids who end up emulating them to terrible results.

Miss Universo 2008 Dayana Mendoza De Venezuela

Nha Trang, Vietnam. Dayana Mendoza, se coronó Miss Universo 2008 y le dio a Venezuela la quinta corona del máximo certamen internacional de la belleza. La beldad suramericana se impuso en una final de cinco candidatas, cuatro de las cuales fueron latinas.

Le siguieron Miss Colombia, Taliana Vargas, como primera finalista; Marianne Cruz, Miss República Dominicana como segunda, Rusia tercera y México cuarta. La aspirante mexicana, Elisa Nájera, había ganado en días previos la competencia en traje de baño. Las bellezas alcanzaron su sitial luego que el grupo original de 80 aspirantes se redujo a 15 y luego a 10. La estadounidense Crystle Stewart, quien estuvo en ese último grupo, repitió la suerte de su antecesora Rachel Smith y resbaló durante el desfile en traje de noche, lo que pudo haberle costado el pase al cuadro final, reseñó AP. La representante de Puerto Rico, Ingrid Rivera, no llegó siquiera a estar entre las 15, pese a que antecesoras suyas alcanzaron el cetro en cinco ocasiones. El récord lo mantiene Estados Unidos con siete.

El certamen se transmitió en vivo a 170 países bajo la animación del presentador de televisión estadounidense Jerry Springer y la Spice Girl, Melanie Brown.

"Wright has criticised photographers who hound Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton, saying it was a "difficult area - one person's freedom of expression is another person's invasion of privacy".

"I think this is something we all have to look at very carefully," he added. "I have been giving a lot of thought over the last year to the situation of Prince William and Kate Middleton and I think there is a strong case that photographers following somebody all day every day whatever they are doing is not right.

"But if you are second in line to the throne and you go to a nightclub with your girlfriend and you come out and you are drunk and pictures are taken I think it's a different matter.""

Seems to be a very sensible argument there.

Sarah Silverman is nominated for an Emmy.

For Sarah Silverman, this has been a week of good news and bad news.

First, the bad: On Monday, it was reported, she and boyfriend of five years, Jimmy Kimmel broke up.

Now, the good: On Thursday Silverman, 37, was one of those lucky enough to be nominated for an Emmy.

But, now for the weird news: the TV Academy nod is linked to what she did on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, an over-the-top music video in which she and the Sexiest Man Alive flaunted their (fictitious and funny) affair to Kimmel, all set to music in a ditty titled, "I'm F------ Matt Damon".

The Emmy nominating committee clearly liked what it heard. Silverman is up for the gold in the category of outstanding original music and lyrics, along with her fellow writer-composers on the ditty Tony Barbieri, Wayne McClammy, Sal Iacono, and Dan Warner.

Their competition for the statuette are those who wrote the song "I Ain't Got No Rhythm" for the Disney Channel's Disney Phineas And Ferb; "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)" and "Inner City Pressure," both from HBO's Flight of the Conchords; and "Sad Fitty Cent," from FOX's MADtv.

Only, so far, there's been no reaction on her nomination from composer-comedian Silverman.

Since the breakup, in fact, there has been no comment from either Silverman or Kimmel on anything of a personal nature. He made no mention of the split on his show this week.

The Emmys will be handed out Sept. 21.

As a young, pale gurl growing up in the 1980's, Corey Haim was my ULTIMATE dreamboat. I saw all of his movies. I even saw the ones that no one else did or ever would...Can you say Dream A Little Dream, Dream A Little Dream 2 (the definition of unnecessary) or Dream Machine!?! At 10 years old, I devised a reincarnation story that I had been married to Corey Haim in a previous life. This was until we were driving in our BMW one warm summer day, lost control of the car and then drowned in a pond near our home (now that I think of it, maybe I watched Beetlejuice one too many times). We were then both reincarnated; however, only I had any memories of our past life. I shared this story with everyone I knew, including my parents. I imagine had children's therapy been deemed then as progressive as it is today, my parents would have had a therapist on speed dial. Instead, my mother just responded by telling me that I had a "wonderful" imagination. She's always been my #1 enabler and I love her for that.

My love for Corey grew stronger as I saved all my chore money to buy every Tiger Beat and Big Bopper magazine that showcased his gorgeous face. However, around the mid 1990's, I began seeing less of Corey. Since the Internet was not an option at that time, I was forced to search the magazine racks diligently each time I were at the grocery store and convenience store to catch a glimpse of my love; but he was no where to be found. Instead of gracing the cover of Tiger Beat, Corey had fallen deeper and deeper into drugs and obscurity. And as I entered my teenage years, Corey briefly faded somewhat from my heart as I started instead giving it to young Midwestern boys. Despite my brief lapse in Corey Haim obsession, my new found love or flannel, Vans, and Courtney Love, wasn't able to completely erase the Haimster from my thoughts. I always wanted him back in the lime light. When I missed him, which was most of the 1990's, I would watch my favorite movie (starring the Two Coreys) - Dream A Little Dream . By the time I graduated high school, I could have recited the whole movie to anyone who had asked. And although no one ever did, I'd still throw in a line or two just to prove my dedication. Not surprising at all, I nearly peed my pants when I found out that Corey was back on television last year starring in The Two Coreys.

I watched every episode of season one, despite how lame and staged it truly was. I was relieved to see that season 2 would include more "honesty," scandal, and just more of my beloved Corey. Sure, he may carry some of his crack scars with him to this day, but to me he'll always be a dreamboat.

However, since season 2 started, it's gotten a little too real for me. I just can't get over the fact that some pervert violated the Haimster. Actually now it seems that both Coreys were molested as kids and it's too disturbing to think about. After hearing things like this, I wish I could go back to my innocence. Or even better, stumble upon a time machine (a la Marty McFly) and save the Haimster from this perv and himself. I'd love to wake up in my old bedroom circa 1988 when Corey was the toast of the town and all I wanted was to grow up and look life Tiffany or Debbie Gibson (I realize she goes by Debra now, but she'll always be Debbie to me). I'd gladly spend one more day tightly rolling my stone-washed jeans and spritzing my favorite Electric Youth perfume on before heading out to go rollerskating. Yes, I said rollerskating. Rollerblades ruined a good roll if you ask me. But sadly, those days are long over. Instead of curling, then ratting, and then spraying 6 pounds of Aqua Net on my bangs, I now blow-dry them straight. And instead of Corey being the biggest young star in the world, he's fallen victim to the reality TV world where he is forced to conjure up the darkest moments of his past just so that he can get a little more screen time. Don't get me wrong, I love the Two Coreys show, but I can't help and be sad that my Corey has fallen so far.

I have decided to start saving for my retirement. As of now, I have enough money to last me until lunchtime tomorrow. I'll have to resist the temptation to blow it all on hookers and cocaine.

Snorting blow off hookers' asses is just so satisfying.

In other news: I look like a pterodactyl in most of the photos that are tagged of me in Facebook. Although I am certainly an awkward, less-than photogenic person, it is particularly bad depending on who was behind the camera. I won't name names, but you terrible photographers know who you are.

I need to get better at my poses and gestures. Like I told a friend, I am going to be a big star someday and I don't want to be easy bait for paparazzi.

There are so many mosquitoes here. It is driving me mad.
