Say hello to Palm's newest edition to their smartphone collection, the Palm Treo Pro. Run Windows 6.1 Professional, has a high-res touchscreen, built in WiFi and GPS. The phone also has an impressive 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM. If that wasn't enough, it even has a 2 megapixel camera and supports microSDHC cards of up to 32GB. Here's the best part, the phone will be sold unlocked, for a small fee of $550.

The Treo Pro, which Palm announced today after a couple of false starts, is entirely evolutionary. Pace Dow Jones, but I'm not sure if there's anything truly innovative at all about it--what it is is a much-needed and overdue refresh of the basic Treo design, which had changed amazingly little since the release of the Treo 600 back in 2003. But a phone doesn't have to be particularly innovative to be sexy, and the Treo Pro is the first Treo since the 650 that can reasonably be described as sexy...

Quick rundown of notable Treo Pro features:

--all-new industrial design (owing more than a little to the popular Treo cousin the Centro);

--a screen that's flush with the face of the phone a la the iPhone, rather than a sunken one a la previous Treos;

--Wi-Fi and GPS (not new in Treos, but still a pleasant surprise);

--a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can plug in standard earphones;

--at .53", it's thinner than previous Treos (but still a bit chunkier than an iPhone 3G);

--at 4.7 ounces, it's lighter than previous Treos (and precisely the same weight as an iPhone 3G);

--Talk time of five hours is the longest that Palm quotes for a Treo;

--Oh, and it runs Windows Mobile 6.1, and I'm not sure if Palm has made any amendments to the software other than the ones it's included in previous Treos.

Palm hasn't announced any U.S. carriers for the Pro; it'll be selling the phone direct, in a $549 unlocked version. I hate contracts and love unlocked phones, so that doesn't faze me, but Palm won't sell gazillions of these things unless it's available cheap from one or more carriers.

I haven't laid eyes on a Treo Pro in person yet, but I'd like to--it sure looks good. But at best, it's just an appetizer--the next new Palm phone that stands a chance of being really exciting is the first one based on the all-new version of its own operating system. Not much is known about that OS, and it's been delayed again and again; I've officially decided to hold off getting my hopes up too much until I have a better sense of what it is, what it does, and when we'll get it. (This New York Times story says it's due in the first half of 2009, so the wait may be considerable even if Palm's schedule doesn't slip.)

Over the years, I've met with hundreds of companies to be briefed on thousands of new products. People sometimes ask me if I knew any of them was going to be a smash hit before it became one, and I always immediately tell them about seeing the first PalmPilot back in 1995, months before it was released. (It was, incidentally going to be called the Palm Taxi--I'm glad that trademark issues prevented that moniker.)

When I saw that first PalmPilot and imagined the implications and possibilities, it was kind of thrilling. I'd love to feel that way about a Palm product again...and while the Treo Pro is not that product, it's not a bad stopgap. More thoughts and images from my friend Andrew Carton over at Treonauts.

No deseo ser agorero para Palm pero mi impresión es que la lucha será cosa de dos en los próximos años: Apple y el consorcio de la Open Handset Alliance. Ya se baraja el futuro diseño de un modelo fabricado por HTC (miembro de la Open Handset Alliance) sobre el sistema operativo auspiciado por Google; su nombre HTC Dream. Todo dependía en gran parte de la aprobación de la FCC y ésta parece estar hecha, así que seguramente el lanzamiento del nuevo modelo se producirá antes de Navidad. Sólo Google y el resto de la Open Handset Alliance tienen la capacidad de realizar propuestas de valor serias. Y es que a pesar de lo que diga Mr. Rubinstein, no es el momento de inventar la rueda, ya que el camino a seguir está clarísimamente establecio por el iPhone. Probablemente Rubinstein dice este tipo de cosas por su pasado en Apple. Mal quedaría si se fuera a otra empresa para clonar las ideas de sus antiguos colegas. Otra cosa es el modelo de explotación en el que sí pienso que hay un camino más abierto a la creatividad. Apple no se ha caracterizado nunca por facilitar las cosas a desarrolladores externos, sólo hay que contemplar los problemas para introducir una aplicación en la Apple Store, y eso será aprovechado por un retador como Google y amigos.

Uma das pioneiras no desenvolvimento de SmartPhones, a Palm, passou, ou está passando ainda, por uma crise depois que o mercado foi invadido por novos fabricantes de SmartPhones. Como de costume empresas que são líderes não costumam mexer o "traseiro gordo". Resultado? Perdeu grande parte do mercado que tinha.

Agora tenta emplacar novo produto chamado Treo Pro, que na minha opinião parece mais o Treo 800 de "roupa nova" trazendo o Windows Móbile com uma maquiagem parecida com o do HTC Touch.

Deixando minha opinião de lado, o novo aparelho parece ter uma CPU a 400 MHz, 128 MB de RAM e tela touchscreen de 320x240. Esses ainda números não são oficiais.

O pessoal do Engadget publicou um vídeo com as primeiras impressões do novo aparelho. De qualquer forma, para quem gosta de SmartPhones vale a pena dar uma olhadinha.

Teve uma época, que rolou um papo que o Bono do U2 tinha comprado ou era o maior acionista da Palm.

Se isso for verdade: Como dono da Palm, o Bono é um ótimo cantor... :)

Con respecto al aparato en cuestión los funcionalidades no son nada novedosas, pero eso sí, el producto es uno de los más completos que podremos comprar en el mercado. Como siempre hará falta verlo en tus propias manos para ver si su ergonomía se adapta bien a tus gustos, pero de momento no tiene mala pinta. Una pena que siga funcionando con Windows Mobile. El nuevo SO de Palm tardará medio añito en ver la luz.

New pics of a next gen. Palm Treo have hit the web....by accident...on there public website....by Palm....lol....the new design looks awesome.  and we can arguably say that its the best looking Treo ever!  but it looks like its going to be running windows mobile...which Im not too fond of....Palm make it available with Android and I will be on the waiting list for this baby.

People can also create their own 2D barcodes @ ScanLife.com.  The app is available for several other mobile devices and platforms as well, including BREW, Java, Symbian, Palm, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile.

Palm, a falta de la nota de prensa, ya ha descubierto (ellos no querían) la que pasará a ser la Palm Treo Pro, mucho mejor nombre que Treo 850, y que sigue la tendencia de nombre y diseño de la Palm Centro. Así, se hace mucho más atractiva en la denominación y también en la apariencia, que ya se acerca a los gustos actuales. El acabado en negro brillante es uno de sus signos diferenciadores.

El smartphone Palm Treo Pro presenta unas especificaciones atractivas: pantalla de 2.4 pulgadas con resolución de 320x320 píxeles y que será táctil, con WiFi, GPS, ranura para tarjetas microSD y vendrá en principio sin el sistema operativo nuevo de Palm. Optará de entrada por Windows Mobile 6.1.

La Treo Pro llegará con conectividad HSDPA y cámara de fotos de 2 megapíxeles. Además, sus funciones de reproductor de música las potencia con la salida de auriculares de 3.5 mm y la incorporación de bluetooth A2DP. La batería, con capacidad de 1500mAh promete una buena autonomía.

Por cierto, a la vista de las imágenes y las dimensiones del equipo, el teclado QWERTY no parece que vaya a ser muy cómodo. Ya os lo contaremos.

A Flash presentation of the Treo Pro recently went live accidentally on the Palm website earlier this week. Even though it was taken down soon, some people did capture a few screen shots. Here is what we can expect.

Looks quite nice. The Treo Pro is expected to be slimmer than the Centro but with a more comfortable keyboard. First looks do seem impressive.

Now for some specs:

• 2.4-inch, 320 by 320-pixel display
• Wi-Fi
• 2 megapixel camera
• 400MHz processor
• 100MB of RAM
• microSD memory expansion
• 3.5mm headphone jack

The only let down is that it would be running on the latest Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 and not on Palm's Nova, the operating system based on Linux, on which Palm is still working. Being a long time user of the Palm Tungsten E2 handheld, I can vouch for the preformance and reliability of the Palm OS Garnet. Even though handhelds from other manufacturers running Windows may have had a more attractive look they simply did not perform upto the same levels as Palm OS.

The Treo Pro looks like a winner to me, but I would still like to wait for the Treo that would run Nova; just can't compromise on performance.
