My second assignment in this project is the Padron Ambassador. My first contribution to the project was the Padron 3000. The Ambassador provided me with a different experience than I've had with other sizes of Padrons. Padrons are the only cigars that I prefer the maduros over the naturals. But this wasn't the case with the Ambassadors. I found the natural to be an excellent smoke, perhaps the best $5 cigar I have ever smoked. The maduro was a good cigar but nothing special. The natural was an excellent cigar. See the full compiled review over at Keepers of the Flame.

"Happy jetting," my ass. i am not doing any "jetting" this evening. Know why? I'll tell you why. JetBlue sucks. Big time.

Let me say this once and for the record: I hate JetBlue. I hate JetBlue with a passion. First, they left me stuck on the runway for more than an hour when I left JFK on Friday. It's bad, but the reality of flying JetBlue. Let's not forget that these fucks left passengers stuck in a plane on the runway for around 10 hours last year.

Well, they somehow canceled my flight to JFK this afternoon ... without bothering to tell me. I showed up at the airport; the asshole behind the counter just told me that JetBlue was booked solid into JFK until Tuesday and had no way to get me near New York today. "Well," I asked, "can you get me into LaGuardia tomorrow? Newark?" No to the former, yes to the latter. But, he didn't even fucking offer! I had to drag it out of him!

In the words of my favorite cigar guy, "Amigo, cahhh'maaaahhhn." Translation: This is bullshit.

JetBlue can kiss my ass. Due to the nature of my travel, I don't always get to choose my airline. When I do get to choose, it will not be JetBlue. I suggest that you adopt a similar policy. JetBlue will fuck you over on a good day and strand you when all else fails.

So, I am back at the resort that I came down here to cover. In all honesty, it could be worse (as my wife reminded me). I am in a top-shelf hotel, and they actually upgraded my room. Now, I have a corner room with a large wraparound deck. There are chairs to accommodate around eight people. So, I am writing, thinking, fuming and smoking a Padron Anniversaro 1926 (natural wrapper, not maduro). I have some writing to do, so I'll at least be busy this evening. Dinner is en route (a burger, I'm really pretty simple.

The hotel made solving my current situation very easy, and for that, they have my eternal gratitude. I can't reveal where I am staying on my blog, as the article has yet to be published (hell, I still have to write it). But, if you know me and I deem you trustworthy, give me a shout, and I'll spill the beans.

For everybody, if you just need a vacation recommendation, hotel suggestion, etc., never be shy about contacting me. I would be more than happy to help you out. Just go to How to Contact Migrant Blogger, or simply leave a message on any of the blog articles. If you do not want your post to be made public, please start it with "DO NOT POST".

Just a reminder, my travel column launches tomorrow at TraderDaily.com.

My first assignment in this project is the Padron 3000. I have smoked both cigars and found them to be enjoyable even if they are bit ugly in appearance. I am not a big maduro fan but for some reason Padrons are the one marca in which I tend enjoy the maduros more than the naturals. To find out more about these great smokes, check out the full review at Keepers of the Flame.

Before I begin let me say this cigar is considered to be my personal all time favorite cigar. In my mind there is no better cigar on the market today.

So with the break in the heat wave, and the temperature at 6:45 am being 78 degrees I placed this baby in my shirt pocket and headed over to my smoking spot. It's getting to be a ritual for me, which I like. So with the birds chirping and showing their first signs of life in a few days I clipped this baby by doing a no-no. I couldn't find my cutter and I capped it with my teeth. I got just the cap and it was cleaner then most cuts so I was happy that I didn't ruin the cigar by going old school.

Pre-light: The pre-light draw was smooth and clean as always with this cigar. I believe the cigar had been sitting in my humidor for about 2 months. The draw was full of cedar and what tasted like vanilla to me. The cigar had no imperfections and was begging to be smoked.

Smoke: With the early morning joggers and dog-walkers passing me by, and the occasional distant rumble of a jet taking off for destinations unknown, I struck the match and gently drew the flame to my smoke of the day. The light was quick, and clean. A perfect burn was beginning and I was able to sense from the get go that this cigar would be a finger burner.

As I smoked the first third of the cigar flavors of cocoa and a light pepper enveloped my palate with each draw. The smoke was smooth and creamy. As I enjoyed this smoke I looked out to the empty beach which would soon be filled with the sun worshipers. Finches landed on the ground searching for their morning breakfast. Squirrels hopped along the concrete with one stopping along side my car looking up at me. He was soon joined by another, and for a second I wish I could talk to the animals ala Dr. Doolittle as I am sure they had many stories to tell.

The cigar had a nice tight white ash as I reached the second third of the cigar. The cocoa remained and the light pepper was replaced by a nuttiness which suits my personality at times. The final part of the cigar, which I smoked til it burned my fingers was a little bit peppery, but not much. The flavors remained, and the cigar did not get hot to the touch. The cigar remained lit throughout, and had no burn issues what so ever.

Afterwards I was relaxed and fulfilled. The cigar quenched my desire for a morning smoke, and its creaminess remains with me more then an hour after the smoke is finished. I am relax, and calm and looking forward to the day ahead.

Price: $10.50
Rating: 100 (Out of 100)

Just a little note on the rating. This is my favorite cigar, and if the cigar does not get a perfect score when it is my favorite, what would. In reality the cigar would get a 94-96. But for me there is none better, so it deserves perfection, for that is what the cigar is.

All sizes come in lacquered cedar boxes of 26, packaged with cellophane sleeves on individual cigars. Many vendors list a box size of 25.
This comparison review is one in a series on the original Padron line of cigars. When we have completed reviews on the entire line, a vertical tasting for each wrapper will be published. Each review will be an amalgam opinion of cigarfan and lucky7 along with that of the guest reviewer(s). Our guest reviewer for this vitola is:

Padron Series Palmas - Natural and Maduro

Those of us who have been around for a while know that the names manufacturers choose for their cigars do not always follow standard nomenclature. We all remember our first trips into the humidor, gazing starry-eyed at the assortment of cigars and wondering what all the different terms mean. Eventually our confusion is compounded when we find out that what one cigar maker calls a "toro" another one calls a "corona gorda" and another one calls a "robusto extra," and so forth.

In the same spirit, the term "Palmas" is a little misleading here. The Padron Palmas is a little too large to be a traditional palmas, which is a slim panatela with a 33 ring gauge. What we have here is something closer to a lonsdale, or a long corona.

Natural

If you were to remove the band from this cigar and offer it to an experienced cigar smoker, you might get a piercing glare, or at least a hearty guffaw for your trouble. This is not a pretty stick. Our reviewers described it as bumpy, misshapen, and most forgivingly, rustic. One sample was cracked at the head and required a bit of magic mending tape to render it smokable. (Yet another example of the fearless ingenuity of the dedicated cigar smoker.)

In addition to its slovenly appearance, the Palmas Natural features soft spots, a loose roll, and a draw that is a bit on the loose side. Maybe this one is best smoked in the dark.

Fortunately it gets better from here. A cold draw presents a "chocolatey tobacco" flavor and the wrapper scent is earthy with a little leather.

The Palmas Natural opens with a touch of harshness that abates after an inch or so and then becomes smooth and medium-bodied with a slightly citric tang. All three reviewers agree that the predominant flavor at this point is coffee; outlying flavors include cocoa, dark chocolate, and Lisa detected a hint of cloves.

Cigarfan and Lisa noted identical overtones in the middle section: cedar, leather, and a peppery taste that grows from this point onward. Despite the early indications of construction problems, there are no burn or draw issues aside from a slightly weak "zebra-colored" ash.

The flavors intensify into the last third, gathering leather and pepper together with a long earthy finish.

Maduro

The dark and oily wrapper on the maduro immediately gives it an edge over the natural. It's still not a perfect beauty, but the rough and tough appearance of a maduro wrapper often seems to hide aesthetic flaws. In this case that is a very good thing, because again our reviewers hurled unflattering descriptors at the Palmas: "rough and wrinkled," "large veins," and "a little sloppy." But Lucky7 remarked on the fine grain of the wrapper, and cigarfan found the dull oily sheen rather appealing.

And where the natural version suffered from a loose roll, the maduro goes in the opposite direction. Our samples were firm to very tight; in one case the cigar was plugged. As always, we remind ourselves that cigars are handmade products and not every one is perfect. A plugged stick is certainly an anomaly for Padron, and this is the first one we've come across in recent memory.

Lisa noted a hint of "sun dried prunes" in her pre-light inspection. This is interesting in light of the prunes and raisins that Lucky7 and Brian found in the 7000 maduro.

The Palmas maduro starts up with a little harshness on the throat that gradually mellows after an inch or two. A woody flavor predominates, accented by notes of leather and a nutty sweetness, almost like hazelnut or coconut. Lucky7 described a "healthy nose twang" that slowly dissipates through the middle part of the cigar.

The middle section is creamier, smoother, and brings more flavors of coffee, leather and chocolate.

This long corona finishes up with "chewier flavors," as Lisa says: roasted nuts, leather, vanilla, and pepper. Lucky7 found "toastier flavors" with a cocoa or java aftertaste, and cigarfan experienced burnt coffee and char in the last third.

Conclusion

While there was more agreement about the flavor characteristics of the natural Palmas than the maduro, all reviewers did agree on one thing: we preferred the maduro to the natural in this size. Both wrappers have their own distinctive tastes, as well as their own aesthetic flaws, but the maduro wins out for its earthy core and sweet molasses overtones.

Lisa added that this size in particular appeals to her:

"The Palmas vitola is quickly becoming my personal favorite to smoke. I feel like you get a nice concentration of flavors and an appreciation of learning to smoke slowly due its limited draw. Also, I feel women could feel really comfortable smoking this size and not feel like a fool. Long and slender really strikes an elegant profile."

And there's one thing nobody will argue about: the price. They're straightforward smokes with a working class disposition, but they're a great value and provide a smooth and even tempered smoking experience.

We certainly enjoyed working with Lisa on this review and wish her well with all things "Her Humidor".

Country:Nicaragua
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Maduro
Filler: Nicaraguan long filler
Size: 6.25" x 60 ring

Among most American cigar smokers these days, the large ring gauge is king. I'll be up front. I am not a fan of large ring gauges. Quite often I find cigars with a 52+ ring to have muted flavors and iffy complexity. Not to mention they just aren't very comfortable to have in your mouth. I consider Coronas, Lonsdales, and Lanceros to be the ideal cigar vitolas, and consider them connoisseur sizes. That said I am a fan of the Padron thousand series cigars. Further more, it is the one line of cigars that I feel are better in their maduro version then they are in a natural wrapper. That is significant because those who have read my reviews know I'm not a maduro fan as a rule either. So this particular cigar is a bit intriguing to me because I'm curious what will win out with me, the fact that I like Padron maduros or the fact I dislike huge ring guages.

I am able to sample this monster smoke thanks to my friends at CigarsDirect.com. Padron's maduro wrappers aren't very dark in comparison to most maduro wrappers. In fact, the maduro cigars in this line aren't much darker than the naturals and it can be hard to tell the difference without putting them side by side. The wrapper looks like rough leather with a slight tooth and oily sheen. The large cap put my Palio cutter to the test as it barely fit inside the blades, but it clipped nicely. It has a very light draw which I find typical with this line of cigars. I toasted the foot and it took the light nicely producing a nice even burn. The excessively large ring gauge makes it a little difficult to draw on and it feels very awkward in my mouth. I find this stogie kind of hard to smoke. Flavor wise it is very much like it's brothers but the flavors are more muddled compared to the 3000 and even the 5000. It is very leathery with a nutty undertone. The construction is typical Padron. A sloppy cap but otherwise perfectly made with a good draw, even burn, and a well formed ash. It is a good cigar, kind of easy going with a cool burn. Those that love the big fat stogies are going to really enjoy this stick. As for me, I find the ring gauge too large and as a result the cigar is an awkward smoke.

So for our first review, we chose the Padron 1964 Anniversary Maduro. It is common knowledge among people who know me (and some that don't) that the Padron '64 is my favorite cigar, so you can guess how this review is going to go.

Padrons are Nicaraguan puros, which means that all of the tobacco is Nicaraguan, and it's rolled in Nicaragua. The country is known, in general, to produce full-bodied cigars with a prominent earthiness and spiciness, and this is no exception. This is the line of cigars that Padron produced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the company, which is why it's called the "Anniversary Series." I'd call the cigar medium-bodied at the light, but as you get a bit farther along, it settles into a nice medium-to-full that is tasty without being overpowering. If you haven't eaten recently, you might even get a little lightheaded.

The wrapper on this cigar was pretty: slightly veined, and very toothy (meaning the wrapper has little bumps all over it). The color was consistent, and not very dark for a maduro.

So, having taken a look over it, and having given it a good (straight!) cut, I lit it. The first puffs were spicy, with a slight sweetness, and a bit of earth in the finish. The burn was outrageously slow, and perfectly straight the whole way down. The smoke was thick and plentiful, which is always satisfying. One of the best qualities about this cigar is that it's dense and firm, but the draw remains easy with only just-enough resistance.

The second half of the cigar wasn't a large departure from the first half, but the spiciness was overtaken by the growing presence of the earthiness, and the sweetness grew into a distinct vanilla note. A bit of wood crept into the finish. Every puff was more complex than the last. It is interesting to note that, while the first half of the cigar stimulated mostly the front and middle of the tongue, the second half sat more heavily in the middle and back of my palate. While the strength grew a bit, it never sat heavy on the chest like some full-bodied cigars tend to do.

The last bit of the cigar brought out another interesting flavor, and I'm not sure I can accurately describe it. It was a bit like rye bread, and a bit like a sharp cheese. And a bit like neither of those. Anyway, it was nice. After an hour and a half, I had to put it in the ashtray, and I admit I was a little sad it was over.

Here's the breakdown:

Size: 7" x 50
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Maduro
Strength: Medium-to-Full
Price: I paid $15.75.
Rating: Awesome!*

So yeah, highly recommended. It's sad that the cigar is so expensive, but sometimes an incredible cigar is worth paying as much as you'd pay for a good meal. Not an every day smoke for most people (especially not for this half-broke college student), but when you really need the best cigar money can buy, I wouldn't hesitate to pick this one up. Well, I'd probably get the natural. But that's another review.

*A note about my rating system: I don't have one. I refuse to use numbers or letter-grades or anything like that. It just doesn't make sense to "grade" something so subjective. I do like to give people an idea of whether my experience was positive or negative, overall, so I'll write something like "Pretty good" or "Pretty not very good" or "Wow that's a bad cigar" for each review. And I take everything into account with this: taste, construction, price, etc.

Most cigar smokers have come to respect the wonderful complexity that the Padron line has to offer. Known for creating exceptional Nicaragua "puros", the Padron Cigar is considered by many cigar lovers to be one of the top products in the world. We figured it would be a wonderful start to our cigar reviews as it is on both of our favorite lists (yet probably for different reasons). We chose to review the Maduro (I have discovered that I personally prefer the natural). As you can see from the photo above, the cigars are gorgeous in the boxes. Padron is one of the few companies that can attract customers to their corner of a smoke shop's humidor without using "hip" marketing schemes and flashy colors. There is something to be said for a company that produces their fine product in just a plain wooden box and a humble color scheme on their bands. If you've been smoking for a little while, I am sure that you have picked up a cigar that has felt flimsy and soft in your hand; this is not the case for the Padron 1964. It is very firm in the hand which concerned me as far as the draw that the cigar would have.

As soon as I lit it up and took a few draws, I got a nice hint of spice that tickled my tongue a little bit complemented by a good deep earthy flavor. The draw surprised me and was very easy allowing me to put off a lot of smoke even in the first few draws. The cigar did start to burn unevenly early on, but it quickly fixed itself and remained even for the rest of the cigar. The ash was a very dark gray and looked awesome on this particular cigar. As I continued smoking, the the earthy flavor intensified and overcame the original hint of spice. The cigar continued to hold firm in my hand and continued having an excellent draw. The body of the cigar also continued to increase and I really enjoyed it with a cup of coffee. The cigar began to have somewhat of a woody aftertaste that I thought was quite refreshing. Ultimately the cigar witheld its woody, earthy, and leathery tastes and aromas and although it smoked for over an hour and fifteen minutes, I was not ready to put it down.

I would consider this cigar a solid medium bodied cigar. It burns slowly and cooly which allowed me to enjoy the cigar and relax. Taking the price I paid for the cigar ($15.75) and the wonderful flavors I recommend only smoking this cigar when you have a good hour and a half to devote to the experience. Rushing through this cigar would be a sin. I woud recommend the Padron 1964 Maduro to anyone looking for an excellent high end cigar that has just enough amount of body while still tasting great. Most smoke shops that I have visited carry the Padron line and I encourage you to give it a try- I can't imagine anyone not getting an enjoyable experience out of the Padron 1964.

Gå in, läs och begrund.

Återigen alltså; gå in, läs och begrunda.

PADRON 2000 MADURO

Style: Robusto
Draw: Excellent
Flavor: Coffee Notes, Dark Chocolate, Soft Creamy Leather, Roasted Nuts

Review: It was a cool Saturday night, not cold, but cool. No clouds, stars are bright, I think it’s a good time for a smoke. The smallest cigar in the humi is a Padron 2000, lets go with that.

The look of the Padron 2000 is your typical classic maduro cigar. You get a nice dark wrapper, good veins and some glossy oily spots. The band however, is a little boring for my taste. It’s way to simple of a band and it really doesn’t give any special overall look to the cigar. But …. (dramatic pause) …. believe me when I tell you this …. (dramatic pause 2) …. by the end of this smoke, your not going to give a (you know what) about the band. Honestly, you might not even notice the band while your smoking this cigar because you’ll be hypnotized, so be careful you don’t smoke the band.

When I picked up the cigar, I instantly got hit with aroma, so I gave it a nice little sniff action. Smelling this cigar is like smelling a leather jacket, that was left inside a box of sweet dark chocolates for months. Im not kidding, that’s exactly what I got, maybe my palate is a little crazy for you, but what can I do? It smells great. Its time for a toast up.

Big smoke on the toast up, no problems at all and great aroma. Again, that pretty leather jacket that your girlfriend gave you for Christmas, that you accidentally put in a box full of your favorite sweet dark chocolate is on fire ! And guess what? You don’t care its on fire, because it wasn’t that pretty anyways, but you know what? It sure does smell great. So #$!% it, let it burn !

The best part of the Padron 2000 is smoking it. Yes, the band is super ugly and it kind of looks like a “Uglycristo”, but smoking this cigar is fantastic. On my palate I got Coffee Notes, Soft Creamy Leather, Dark Chocolate and Roasted Nuts on the aftertaste. The flavors on this cigar are consistent and don’t change at all and that is exactly what I want from a cigar. These flavors are fantastic and very pleasing. There’s no harsh after taste and no harsh spice. This cigar is fantastic, I said that already, but it is !

After smoking the Padron 2000, I felt so good. I feel like this is what cigars are suppose to be like and this is the way a cigar is suppose to make you feel. Make you feel good, like James Brown. I never smoke a cigar to the very end, but I couldn’t put this one out, I wanted to make sure I smoked everything I could. And that’s what I meant about accidentally smoking the band. I take the bands off the cigars so I can take pictures and keep them for my self with scores on them. I was so hypnotized by this cigar I almost forgot to take off the band. Getting a box is not a maybe or something to think about, you need a box of these in your life.

Padron’s slogan goes like this, “ When Padron is on the label. Quality is a matter of family honor. “ This is a quality smoke and by the end of this cigar, you will know what quality cigars taste like.

Final Note: One word, WOW.

Rating: 5/5 - Excellent !
Date Smoked: 1-12-08
