This intership took place in the BTO department within a team working in J2EE with the framework JavaServer Faces. I was in charge of a Web2.0 concepts and technologies survey (social networking, AJAX, Rich Internet Application...) and how to use them in a professional product (Dashboard, CMS, Reporting tools...).

So I worked with JSF as backend (Managed beans and basic servlets) and with a lot of Web2 technologies:

• JavaScript with JSF framework such as ajax4jsf, IceFaces
• Adobe Flash with OpenLaszlo (a Adobe Flex concurrent)
• Pure JavaScript frameworks such as Prototype, Script.aculo.us, DOJO ...
• Google Web Toolkit (an amazing tool/compiler to produce HTML/JavaScript from Java)

I learnt a lot, technically and also in project management because I worked with a very experienced team, and all of its member helped me every day and was really patient with me. This site is where they assembled and serviced the Canadian Packard cars. In March 1945 a V2 rocket destroyed the factory and all the remains are the original steps to the showroom. The bomb left 32 dead and 102  seriously injured, which makes the sad loss of the building seem a bit insignificant by comparison. 

It is now site to a remarkably dull Curry's retail centre - rather ironic, as it is just along the road from the impressive former Curry's HQ (see previous post).

Being an art guy, I work on a Mac. So it might be blasphemous for me to even bring this spot up, but it's too damn cool looking. Great music. Great sound design. The motion is perfect and the post-production is brilliant. This spot will truly break through the clutter and be noticed. The TouchSmart PC looks pretty sleek, but I can't help but think it reminds me of another product...but bigger.

Although most celebrity guests turned them down, "Cesna Stuntplane Barbie" flew in for the Gimli Car Club's first annual swap meet.

Despite the sudden dip in temperature (the first non-top-down weather in a week) the show appeared to be a success. There were lots of goodies to be had, including this rare gem: a 3-carb setup for an early 60's 6-cylinder, complete with linkages and Edelbrock intake manifold.

The parking lot turned into an impromptu car show, with many of the buyers (and exhibitors) driving their best set of wheels to the show. One standout included this beastly bug:

Gauthier Auto Museum, Part 2:

As I mentioned last week, red convertibles seem to be a common theme at the Gauthier Auto Museum. If you look really close, you can see three of them in this artsy-fartsy photo--a '53 Cadillac, a '58 Impala, and an early 50's Packard.

Of course, the other group are the vintage Dodge musclecars. This sparkling-clean '70 Charger R/T convertible bridges the gap between the Buddy Holly-era red droptops and the classic Mopar muscle waiting in this basement. Why? Because like Chuck Norris, vintage power like this does not sleep-it waits.

Although it's Jim "The Big Guy" Gauthier that finds these cars, it's Ron (pictured) that does the dirty work. His full-time job is to take these rare jewels and restore them to their original glory. He's pictured here with their next wunder-ride: a 1955 Dodge Lancer convertible powered by a very early Hemi. The car is undergoing a full frame-off restoration, including a nifty off-pink paint job. A fitting retirement for one of only six Lancers allowed into Canada.

The sleek device represents a significant design win for Via, which has struggled to win business from top-tier PC makers in the face of stiff competition from Intel. The win is even more remarkable because Intel just released its Centrino Atom package for handheld computers and will start shipping a line of low-cost Atom chips designed for laptops like the 2133 during the third quarter.

HP chose the C7-M because it met the thermal requirements needed for the 2133, according to Philip Devlin, a product marketing manager at HP Asia-Pacific, adding that Via has long provided microprocessors for HP's line of thin clients.

Another important consideration was timing. The C7-M was ready when HP wanted to make the 2133 available, Devlin said.

The 1.19-kilogram 2133 has an aluminum-alloy case and is priced from US$499 to $899, depending on the configuration. The laptop comes with a C7-M processor running at 1GHz, 1.2GHz or 1.6GHz, and runs Windows Vista or SuSE Linux Desktop 10. Standard features include an 8.9-inch screen with a resolution of 1,280 pixels by 768 pixels, a nearly full-size keyboard, a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot, and an ExpressCard slot. It also has wireless interfaces for Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi.

When it comes to storage, users have the choice of a 120G-byte hard disk or a 160G-byte disk. A 4G-byte solid-state drive is available for Linux, and HP expects to offer an 80G-byte SSD as an option for both operating systems during the third quarter.

The 2133 gets around two hours of battery life with the standard 3-cell battery and four hours with a 6-cell battery, Devlin said.

Devlin declined to comment on whether HP plans to use Via's upcoming Isaiah processor with the 2133, but said the chip is "a point of conversation" between the two companies.

Isaiah is expected to offer significantly more performance than the C-7M processor while offering the same thermal characteristics. The two chips are pin-compatible, which means that no work will be required to adapt the 2133 — or any other computer that uses the C7-M — for the new processor. Laptop makers simply swap the C7-M for the newer chip, when it becomes available.

Dubbed "HP USB Floppy Drive Key," the device is a combination flash drive and compact floppy drive, and is designed to work with various models of HP's ProLiant Server line. HP sells two versions of the drive, one with 256MB of flash capacity, the other with 1GB of storage space.

A security analyst with the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Center (ISC) suspects that the infection originated at the factory, and was meant to target ProLiant servers. "I think it's naive to assume that these are not targeted attacks," said John Bambenek, who is also a researcher at the University of Illinois. (link)

The company's triple-core Phenom X3 8000 series processors provide an option to mainstream PC buyers who don't want to spend on a quad-core processor but are looking for more performance than a dual-core processor, said Pat Moorhead, vice president of advanced marketing at AMD.

The chips could be used for high-definition video playback, casual mainstream gaming and productivity applications, Moorhead said.

The company's first triple-core processors include the Phenom X3 8400, which runs at 2.1GHz, and the Phenom X3 8600, which runs at 2.3GHz. Both will come with 1.5MB of L2 cache and 2MB of L3 cache.

AMD also launched three Phenom quad-core processors on Thursday — the Phenom X4 9750, which runs at 2.4Ghz; the Phenom X4 9850, which runs at 2.5GHz; and the Phenom 9100e, a low-voltage quad-core processor that runs at 1.8GHz and has a 65-watt power envelope during maximum usage. All the processors contain 2MB of L2 cache and 2MB of L3 cache.

PC makers will ship products with the quad-core processors in the second quarter, AMD said.

The triple-core processors are already shipping in volume to PC makers, AMD said. U.S. vendor ZT Systems will list PCs with the new triple-core Phenoms on Monday, with other "major OEMs" and system vendors shipping products next quarter, AMD said. Many major vendors, including Dell and Hewlett-Packard, have already hinted at including the processors in desktops.

Dell has listed plans to use the chip in its OptiPlex 740 business desktop systems. It will ship the triple-core OptiPlex in the second quarter, a company spokeswoman recently said, but she declined to specify which processor will run the desktop. Hewlett-Packard has also listed a desktop on its Bulgarian-language Web site with AMD's Phenom Triple-Core 8600B processor.

Mesh Computer, a PC vendor in the U.K., is offering the Matrix XXX Plus desktop with the Phenom X3 8400 processor and the Matrix XXX Pro desktop with the Phenom 8600 processor.

Because the triple-core chip is a new concept--set between the widely accepted dual- and quad-cores--it's unclear how it will fit in the market, said Dean McCarron, founder and principal at Mercury Research.

"You're going to get a performance enhancement with the extra core above and beyond a dual-core," McCarron said. But it also falls shy of a quad-core.

AMD designed the triple-core as a way to produce a cheaper chip. The triple-core processor is built on a quad-core CPU, with one core nonfunctional, McCarron said.

The triple-core chip gives AMD a tactical advantage over Intel, McCarron said. Intel will need to answer the triple-core chip with a product priced in the same range while delivering similar performance. Intel can take a dual-core or quad-core processor, adjust features like cache, and price it similar to AMD's triple-core processor, McCarron said.

Now, the ones that I have personally used are Ubuntu, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, and Debian. All are great distributions and each has their own look and feel.

Ubuntu is by far the most popular. Perhaps the reason is the fact that some Dell and HP computers are now sold with Ubuntu as the main Operating System on them. Although they are few, it is still a start in the direction of a mainstream Linux Operating System. Ubuntu has it's own little problems, mostly dealing with drivers and codecs. I personally stuck with Ubuntu as it was the most familiar and, as i found it to be, a little more convenient than the others.

Mandriva is another popular distribution based on Red Hat. Mandriva is an rpm-based distribution and is different from Ubuntu and Debian. Mandriva is an excellent distribution for its look and feel. Those who like a smooth interface and beautiful designed artwork in their system would love using this distribution. For me, the rpm system was just too different for my tastes and was hard to get used to.

PCLinuxOS is perhaps Ubuntu's main competitor. The system is directed in the direction of being easy to use and to work right out of the box. It is designated to those who would like to use Linux but not have to deal with too much of the Terminal. PCLinuxOS was built to be a "better" Mandriva Linux and in my opinion, it has become that.

Debian is perhaps the mother of all distributions out there, parallel to Red Hat Linux. Many of the distributions are based on it and use its package management system APT. Debian was built to create a more stable and maintained Softlanding Linux System. Debian has become a very stable and wellbuilt system, offering the most comprehensive interface. Another thing that people should take into consideration is that many of the favorite distributions out there would not exist today if it had not been for Ian Murdock building this system.

Again, I must stress that fact that everyone has their preferences, but in my opinion Ubuntu is perhaps going to lose its title soon if the Ubuntu team does not speed up the process of fixing the many bugs that exist in the system.

I'm sitting here on my compy, after getting it back on Saturday. Now, I received the box from HP on Tuesday of last week, mailed it through FedEx on Wednesday afternoon, and on Friday got a note on my door that it was at FedEx, ready for pick-up. My first thought was that there must have been some kind of mistake, and that they'd returned my compy because of some mailing error. Imagine my surprise when I found my computer completely fixed, along with a new keyboard and touchpad strip, all with a three-day turnaround time!

They had originally told me that they were going to have it back to me in a week, and I was okay with that, but with this, HP's got my loyalty. Here's a company that still knows the true power of business, that of treating the customer like a real person, and not just another stat on the financial statement.
