im a professor of political science, closing out the semester, just won an award for a ground-breaking course called "hip hop politics."

the class was space unique in all the world, indian, white, black, middle eastern, caribbean, muslim, jewish, christian, hindu, working class, wealthy, gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, straight, loud as hell, quiet as a mouse, american, solidly american. the class listened to each other, and listened to me. i listened to them. i loved them.

alright, thats enough with the sap-city.

when i was in undergrad i was lucky enough to find my way through the doors of a few classes that, to this day, shape the way i see the world.

minstrel heroes

one was "african-american history through film," taught by the legendary vernell lillie. learned a world-full in that class. witnessed the evolution from limited humanity, minstrel, mammy, tragic mulatto, to more multi-faceted characters. i saw black people paying inexplicable dues on their way to being "allowed" to get more humanized on the big screen.

"harold and kumar escape from guantanamo bay," is funny, and politically edgy, male-bond-y, and pot head scummy. the movie takes digs at almost every american skeleton in the closet, from the irrational fear of racist old white ladies, to the political illiteracy of homeland security, to the stifling culture of pedigreed white boys post-ivy, to kkk meetings, and white trash heathens. in this sense the movie is bold. and in the minstrel sense, the movie is afraid.

and i do think about harold and kumar in this light. that they are playing minstrel roles.  take kumar.  who opens the movie taking a gross shit (as bad as Friday) and jacking off, cum flecked all over his face.  that just in the first five minutes.

kumar.  who later in the film runs triumphant into the sunny outside, white girl won, fancy wedding dress to his bum.  she was his primary goal the whole film.  and my brother's.  and most of my desi friend's brothers.  jungle fever is for real in the community.  goodness, whatever do we think it means toto?  :)

there are scenes in which kumar is sensual, and that adds refreshing nuance.  like the one of him and her ducked into library stacks, he just taught her some calc, she just tried to eek his poetry out of him, together they are toking back some clandestine weed, an emo harold peeking at them from behind the books.  kumar exhales and murmurs im still not going to show you my poem, and he's *so* on his way to kissing her.  mmmm, so romantic.  you go sexy!

but kumar is still the only cross-over indian character, played by an indian man (not true of ghandi, punjab from orphan annie, or "guru," the soon to be released mike meyers movie, meyers as guru, an indian minstrel character, white man in brown-face, follow me now), on u.s. movie screens.

and i do think about abu from the simpsons in this light. that he was the first indian male to be portrayed on a national, u.s. television show. a buffoon character. laughable at best. in fact, he's still the only desi male on regularly on u.s. national tv.  and unlike minstrels of the past, who at least were brining in money for the community, creating new roles on their way up from the sludge, abu was animated. he wasn't even paid.

thankfully india has her own movie and media industry. bollywood. more newspapers every day. and the greed circling over her, lightening her skin, greening her eyes, making short term money moves at the expense of sovereignty. its all good. they never all the way had us. never will.

dr. lillie took us through a richard pryor (rip) section. that's who i wrote my final paper on. i got a A+ in that class. but even better?  dr. lillie showed my paper to richard pryor's mom. never will i ever forget that shit. shot out to you dr. lillie, you made a difference in my life. here's to laughter, music, film, drawing, dancing,  reading, writing as the best, most subversive, remedy.

on the importance of reading and writing

"a comparative study of european political literature and u.s. based slave texts from 1841-1845." undergrad, senior year.  it was a seminar. like 4 of us. i was the only person of color. and the only woman. i learned a lot. tocqueville's "democracy in america," opened my eyes to the viability of an outsiders take on america,  and schooled me on the importance of political, literary surveys.  later in the course we got to the autobiography of frederick douglass.  douglass had me hooked, ive truly never looked back since.

frederick douglass, a slave who taught himself how to read, escaped in more ways than one. not only did he physically escape the plantation, he went on to start a newspaper, the north star, and in its pages he shone light on underground liberation efforts.

douglass had my nose open off the shit he said about reading. douglass said he knew reading was crucial cuz of how vehemently his master hated it. and douglass said the more he read, the closer he was to free. and the closer he was to free, the more he understood. and the more he understood, the harder it was to live.

a blessing and a damn curse, the ability to see where we are compared to where we could be.

"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave"

[Starting from what one master, Master Hugh, said to his wife, admonishing her not to encourage Douglass to read]

Now," said he, "if you teach that nigger (speaking of myself) how to read, there would be no keeping him. It would forever unfit him to be a slave. He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master. As to himself, it could do him no good, but a great deal of harm. It would make him discontented and unhappy."

These words sank deep into my heart, stirred up sentiments within that lay slumbering, and called into existence an entirely new train of thought...I now understood what had been to me a most perplexing difficulty--to wit, the white man's power to enslave the black man...The very decided manner with which he spoke, and strove to impress his wife with the evil consequences of giving me instruction, served to convince me that he was deeply sensible of the truths he was uttering.

It gave me the best assurance that I might rely with the utmost confidence on the results which, he said, would flow from teaching me to read. What he most dreaded, that I most desired. What he most loved, that I most hated.

In learning to read, I owe almost as much to the bitter opposition of my master, as to the kindly aid of my mistress. I acknowledge the benefit of both.

The reading of these documents enabled me to utter my thoughts, and to meet the arguments brought forward to sustain slavery; but while they relieved me of one difficulty, they brought on another even more painful than the one of which I was relieved.

The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers. I could regard them in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes, and in a strange land reduced us to slavery. I loathed them as being the meanest as well as the most wicked of men.

As I read and contemplated the subject, behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. In moments of agony, I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity.

I have often wished myself a beast. I preferred the condition of the meanest reptile to my own. Any thing, no matter what, to get rid of thinking! It was this everlasting thinking of my condition that tormented me. There was no getting rid of it. It was pressed upon me by every object within sight or hearing, animate or inanimate.

The silver trump of freedom had roused my soul to eternal wakefulness. Freedom now appeared, to disappear no more forever. It was heard in every sound, and seen in every thing. It was ever present to torment me with a sense of my wretched condition. I saw nothing without seeing it, I heard nothing without hearing it, and felt nothing without feeling it. It looked from every star, it smiled in every calm, breathed in every wind, and moved in every storm.

Let's begin with the good news: I've been accepted to the master's in publishing program at Pace University in New York!!!!!!!!! *insert ecstatic jumping and insane screaming here* This means that beginning in the fall I will be learning the ins and outs of the industry which brings us the books we all know and love. I. Can't. Wait! I'm finding it impossible to believe that I'll be a part of the book-making process. How cool is that?! This is truly the first step in a dream come true. Waaaaaa-hoooo!!!!! *insert balloons and confetti falling from the sky here*

Okay, okay - back to our regularly scheduled programing...

I've been reading Barbara Kingslover's book ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MIRACLE and we got off to a rough start in the beginning. Kingslover's writing style is incredibly readable and engaging so it is not the source of my minor quibbles. No - those come when Kingslover draws some rather shaky conclusions, in my opinion, on the problems affecting the American diet. For instance, on page 15, Kingslover writes,

All industrialized countries have experienced some commodification of agriculture and increased consumption of processed foods. But nowhere else on earth has it become normal to layer on the love handles as we do. (Nude beaches are still popular in Europe.)

Now, I may not have quibbled with the first sentence, although I might have wondered what was so wrong with love handles. The last time I checked, having love handles didn't necessarily mean you were overweight. It simply meant that you - as my mother would say - had a little meat on your bones, which I don't think is a bad thing. In fact, I'm of the opinion that it's healthy to have a little meat on your bones.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't have quibbled if she had left it there. But that parenthesized sentence - "Nude beaches are still popular in Europe." - bothered me. What, I wondered, does one point - love handles are normal in America - have to do with the other - nude beaches are popular in Europe? I see the point that Kingslover is trying that make, but it's a very weak one, considering that it does not take into account the differences in culture and the way that Americans versus Europeans tend to view the public display of the naked body.

This cultural difference has very little to do with the relatively recent development of American tendency toward love handles, and more to do, I think, with our inherited Puritan belief that the naked body is something that should only be revealed within the privacy of our own bedrooms. I'm not saying that that's the proper way to view the naked body, but I am saying that it is nevertheless a part of our national psychology inherited from our Puritan ancestors.

And Kingslover says, "Nude beaches are still popular in Europe" as if they were ever popular in America. Was this ever so? Perhaps I am too young to remember the time when Americans frolicked on nude beaches flaunting their fashionably thin bodies.

I also thought Kingslover was being unfairly dismissive of people who claim they simply can't afford organic foods i.e. the farmer friendly and healthier foods offered in grocery stores. She writes,

And we complain about the high price of organic meats and vegetables that might send back more than three nickels per buck to the farmers: those actual humans putting seeds in the ground, harvesting, attending livestock births, standing in the fields at dawn casting their shadows upon our sustenance. There seems to be some reason why we don't want to compensate or think about these hard-working people.

I wrote in the sidelines, "But if you can't afford it, you can't afford it." When a single mother of six is faced with saving a few pennies by buying the commercially farmed food over the more expensive organic kind, nine times out of a ten, she's going to choose the cheaper of the two, no matter how much she might sympathize with the plight of the American farmer. Hey, I've been in Whole Foods before, I know how expensive that stuff is. Everybody simply can not afford it. Or rather, the ordering of their priorities won't allow them to afford it, and I don't think Kingslover, or anyone else, is in a position to judge someone else's priorities. Judge not until you've walked in my shoes.

So there's an example of what I didn't like about the book. What I do like is that, despite my quibbles, it is making me more conscious about all the blasted soy and corn product in my food. Once you start looking the labels, you find that it's on everything. Why, I wondered this morning, is there soy and corn product in my pancake mix? And I've begun to appreciate in a way I never have before the virtues of fresh, unprocessed food. Earlier last week, I baked an animal (Cornish hen), I bought fresh vegetables (carrots and potatoes), and now Barbara Kingslover may have cured me of my addiction to Dr. Pepper (corn syrup heavy), which is surely a miracle.

In other bookish news: because I have problem and can't be stopped, I've bought two books within the past two days. The first is THE BASTARD OF ISTANBUL by Elif Shafak and the second is LADY MACBETH by Susan Fraser King. I really need to stop buying these books. All my recent purchases deserve to be read as soon as possible but, really, if I've said it once, I've said it before: my "currently reading" list is ridiculous.

This Associated Press story about NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's probe into the way more than a dozen universities are handling their study abroad programs is stirring up a lot of commentary. 

Many, many universities have partnerships with organizations that handle their study abroad programs.  Outsourcing the details seems like a reasonable idea considering that universities aren't really in the business of coordinating travel arrangements or homestays in other countries. 

But what IS NOT reasonable is the way students end up getting gouged.  

You see, some of these contractors have very cozy arrangements with the universities.  How cozy?  Well, would a three-week all-expenses paid trip to, say, Italy "encourage" a university administrator to sign up with a particular provider?  Probably.  How about some hefty kickbacks to the university for every student who signs up?  Yep. 

I don't have any problem with program providers.  They are free to run their businesses the way they choose.  But I hold the universities accountable.  When you're paying thousands of dollars to a particular college for your education, you'd like to think that the university administration is out to find the best deal for you.  Ha!  Not likely. 

And so, parents and students have been paying THOUSANDS of dollars more for each semester abroad than they need to.  The prices are high precisely because most universities are using such services--and well, it's a seller's market.  Students want to go abroad, so they just sign on the dotted line, assuming that it really does cost $30,000 to spend a semester in Europe. 

In reality, it costs a fraction of that amount.  (A good chunk of my book is a how-to section for those who want to get the very same study abroad programs for the true price.)

Which schools are being scrutinized?  Harvard, Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., American University in Washington, D.C., Brown University in Providence, R.I., and Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.; and, in New York state, Columbia University, Fordham University, Alfred State College, Alfred University, Manhattanville College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Pace University, Cornell University, Siena College and the College of New Rochelle.

I'm delighted about this investigation, especially since it was the attorney general's office that was bold enough to question the outrageous private student loans many universities were "encouraging" students to take on.  What happened with that?  Well--a lot.  Colleges are now shying away from offering them, some are walking away from them completely, and some are posting very wordy statements on their websites about how they never want to push students to get loans that aren't in their best interests.

I'm heartened.  If it takes lawyers and subpoenas to get colleges to consider behaving more ethically, so be it.  Reduced tuition, reduced loans in favor of grants and scholarships, and reduced price tags for study abroad will be the result of these investigations.  We need this shakedown.

Bring it.

Innov8 came about through IBM’s corporate case challenge, which involves B-school teams from two universities competing with one another to provide a solution to a business problem. IBM VP Sandy Carter noted that 40 of the 44 teams from Duke and U. North Carolina suggested using a videogame to help people develop needed skill sets for business acumen. Since January, Carter has shepherded development of Innov8, using some of the students from the case challenge to help design the game. Pilot studies were completed earlier this year and the game is now ready for prime time, to be offered free to 2000 universities worldwide.

Gameplay should be familiar to World of Warcraft players. It’s a 3-D virtual interactive environment (VIE) with human avatars. Players assume a female avatar tasked with solving various business-scenario dilemmas. NPCs provide helpful dialogue.

Jim Lawler, an information systems associate professor over at Pace University, is given prominent mention. He worried game dynamics would be difficult to master, thus detracting from lessons. However, he was won over after quickly mastering the game. His key quote: “Enrollment is lower in computer science and information systems nationally. This is what schools have to do, integrate these kind of games and tools.”

David Rejeski is also mentioned prominently in the article:

More corporations and the U.S. government are starting to see the potential of games to teach serious subjects, said David Rejeski, director of the Serious Games Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.

"The thing about games that's really nice is you can fail softly," Rejeski said.

The Apply Group, a high-tech consulting firm, predicts that one in five of the Global Fortune 500 will adopt gaming for learning by 2012.

My take: IBM has long been at the forefront of top companies that “get it” with gaming and Web 2.0 technologies. For instance, the company has obtained considerable virtual real estate in Second Life and holds online meetings there with avatars showing up from personnel spread across the globe. It is heartening to see this effort to help train business students in appropriate skill sets. Offering the game to universities free of charge is a good way of helping B-schools graduate students with the knowledge and skills needed by IBM and other big corporations.
