Pues haca te presento Frostwire, el nuevo programa P2P.Funciona igual pero mejor, utiliza la misma red Gnutella pero de mejor forma, mas rapido y con mas aciertos a las busquedas, Frostwire tambien utiliza el skin de Limewire para que no tengas problemitas de compatibilidad mental, jaja. Haca la diferencia es que Limewire decidió asombrar con su producto Limewire Pro de pago para los usuarios y comerles el cerebro de que era mejor que la version gratuíta. Pero la verdad es que Limewire cortó algunas conexiones y servidores para la version gratuíta y así molestarte por la lentitud y pocos recuersos y obligarte a comprar Limewire PRO.

En cambio Frostwire es todo gratuíto y corre al 100% sin cortar conexiones ni servidores... nada... simplemente prefiero Frostwire, y tu? Te quieres quedar atras?

It will be interesting to see who actually makes a dent in iTune's grip on the downloading market.

PPLive also relays music video stations like MTV Asia and feature-length movies. But recently there have been reports that PPLive has started to at least partially block content, with users complaining that they aren't able to access western movies from outside of China. A spokesperson for PPLive owner Juli Media told ChinaTechNews that the company spent 60 million Chinese yuan on technologies to protect copyrights last year alone.

That number seems high, but there's undoubtedly a lot of money to be made with Chinese P2P TV, as the rise of PPLive shows. The P2P streaming platform started as a university project in late 2004. By late 2006, it claimed to attract 2.5 million unique daily visitors, resulting in 18 million daily page views.

Those numbers have gotten the attention of U.S.-based VC firms. PPLive raised $21 million from Draper Fisher Jurvetson in September in a third round of financing after having previously secured around $6 million from other U.S. and Chinese investors.

PPLive isn't the only Chinese P2P streaming platform getting big bucks: PPStream raised $10 million in March of 2007 and UUSee raised $20 million from well-known VC firms like DFJ, Highland Capital and Steamboat Ventures after previously having raised $10 million from Sequinoa and others.

Now it looks like trouble is looming for Chinese P2P companies. PPStream was sued earlier this year, and the Google-backed download platform Xunlei even got in trouble with the MPAA, which is looking to get $1 million dollars in damages by way of the Chinese courts. So far, the effect of these lawsuits on Chinese-based P2P TV is unclear, but we might know more soon: ChinaTechNews is reporting that a court decision in the PPLive case is expected as soon as next month.

As a P2P lender I have started to apply some strict criteria to my lending practice. The amount of the loan, the character of the borrower, the overall credit profile and the candor of the answers to questions by lenders are all factored into a decision. Some P2P lenders get burnt (as I've been previously) by looking at the credit grade and interest rate being offered. If they spot a 'C' grade borrower asking for $15,000 at 23% interest, they are all on it like bees to honey! One must ask, why is so much money necessary? Why the extreme interest rate offering? Is there desperation afoot with the borrower? I've found that so much more can be analyzed on a listing than the grade and interest rates. Lenders will benefit from taking the time to look over all listing details, ask questions and judge beyond the numbers. We (myself mostly) mainly focus on loans of 'AA-B' credit quality and do find some gems that have good value (even good values, morally so) within them. I prefer business loans of under $15k within the 'AA' and 'A' credit grades at the moment. Even though I've been burnt before by an 'A' borrower (Energy Coffee, I've got your number) before and know what to lookout for more or less. P2P lending isn't an exact science and lenders will get surprises, good and bad, all the time. I have several HR (high risk) borrowers who haven't ever missed a payment which is totally against what their peer group does as a whole, so there's my surprise on the plus side!

The purpose of keeping money growing in an account such as Prosper.com for me is to have an income cushion on months where freelance work is nil or slow or if an emergency were to pop up. Heck, I may need money to grab an opportunity too. So it helps to cover all the bases where and when normal income or savings can't. I'm hoping to grow the account at Prosper.com to above $10,000 over the next two months. The balance currently stands at $8,207.79 this morning. Money coming out of Kiva.org and LendingClub.com goes straight into lending at Prosper.com once a week. I would like to see Kiva.org offer a modest interest rate to lenders as an option (1-3%) and LendingClub.com come back to life to revolutionize P2P with some surprise offerings to lenders and borrowers in the near future. The future looks good for P2P, but when the floodgates will actually unleash some really cool options I do not know, but it's going to be awesome to experience!

Nato nel 2005 da un'idea del Prof. Leonardo Chiariglione (che, come molti sanno, è il padre putativo degli standard MPEG, nonché una delle figure riconosciute world wide, che più contribuiscono a dare vanto al nostro paese), il gruppo di lavoro ha definito nel Settembre 2006 una proposta che ha come obiettivo ultimo la "massimizzazione della circolazione dei digital media",

Tale meta, è traguardabile agendo sulle modalità di offerta di contenuti, di accesso alle reti a larga banda e sui servizi di pagamento, coniugando nel contempo due fondamentali, ancorché spesso antitetici, requisiti: libertà di azione per le imprese e libertà di accesso ai contenuti per i consumatori.

Tra gli asset su cui si basa la proposta, è previsto un Sistema di Pagamento online interoperabile basato su credit/point, fortemente ispirato ai LETS (Local Exchange Trading Systems), sigla ed architettura che, per chi ha avuto l'occasione di partecipare a qualche mio seminario o workshop, ha già conosciuto (e di cui parlerò magari in qualche altro articolo).

The judge in Columbia Pictures v Bunnell has ordered the defendants to compensate the plaintiffs $30,000 for each of the 3,699 infringements the plaintiffs established on the copyrights in their movies.  For $110,970,000 the defendants could have produced a major summer blockbuster. Instead they have each filed for bankruptcy protection to avoid any financial liability related to the judgment.

Much more significant than the financial judgment in the case is the injunction the judge has imposed on the Defendant, as well as its  officers, agents, servants, employees, and attorneys.  Each has been "immediately and permanently be enjoined from directly, indirectly, contributorily, or vicariously infringing in any manner any Copyrighted Works." The judge specified the following activities from which the parties are prohibited from:

(a) encouraging, promoting, soliciting, or inducing, or knowingly materially contributing to, enabling, facilitating, or assisting, any person or entity, via any computer server, computer program, website, or online system, network or service, including without limitation any peer-to-peer or file-trading network, (i) to reproduce, download, distribute, upload, or publicly perform or display any Copyrighted Work, or (ii) to make any Copyrighted Work available for reproduction, download, distribution, upload, or public performance or display, or

(b) reproducing, downloading, distributing, uploading, or publicly performing or displaying any Copyrighted Work.

Well, I guess Jason Hughes, a former TorrentSpy employee, might consider shutting down his site movietorrents.info.  Unless, of course, he has license deals in place for all of the content available through the torrent.

Then again Ira Rothkin will probably happily defend Mr. Hughes when the copyright holders come calling.  According to Mr. Rothkin there is no value in the outcome of the case against TorrentSpy because it "never got its day in court."   Oh, come on... TorrentSpy had its day, in fact many days, in court.  Mr. Rothkin's clients chose not to participate, seemingly lied to the court, and all in all appeared to act in bad faith.

The moral of the story, dear readers, of the Columbia Pictures v. Bunnell matter is that it is wise to proceed with caution when defending an illegal action because failing on a sword hurts.

Freenet is free software which lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.

Congratulations to Ian Clarke, Matthew Toseland, and the other the Freenet developers. The quote on the Freenet site epitomizes the importance of the project:

I'm also excited to have Ian as a new addition to the LittleShoot advisory board, one of many things we'll be making more announcements about soon.  I've always had a great respect for Ian's emphasis on p2p's importance as a politically disruptive tool for free speech.  We all got caught up in the copyright wars and missed the big picture, but not Ian.

Os arquivos falsos são do tipo trojan, e tem vários nomes diferentes, estão atacando principalmente as redes eDonkey e Lime Wire, seus nomes podem estar disfarçados com nomes de músicas, arquivos pornográficos, filmes completos e muitos outros, quem faz o download destes arquivos fakes, ao executa-lo é informado que um pacote de codec será instalado, caso prossiga será introduzido um adware, um programa indesejado.

A empresa McAfee afirma que pelo menos 10% dos computadores infectados executaram e instalaram o arquivo, e que o número pode ser bem maior, pois o foco é tão grande que não se tem como obter o número de “hospedeiros” exatamente.

Tenham cuidado redobrado ao usar estas redes!!!

El portal Qtrax ya anunció en enero su lanzamiento, pero hasta este mes no se ha sabido más del tema y muchos lo daban por muerto. Pero parece que ahora se ha reactivado.

Universal ha hecho oficial la alianza que supondría que las discográficas empiezan a rendirse ante un nuevo modelo de negocio, las descargas gratuitas.

Qtrax pretende convertirse en uno de los mayores portales de descarga de música gratis y legal. Este portal, que se financia con anuncios 25 millones de canciones online gratis y legales. ¿Un sueño? Pues parece que no, que es una realidad que pronto podrán comprobar los internautas.

El portal Qtrax ya anunció en enero su lanzamiento, pero hasta este mes no se ha sabido más del tema y muchos lo daban por muerto. Pero parece que ahora se ha reactivado. publicitarios, ha firmado ya con la mayor compañía de discos del mundo: Universal.

Según recoge el diario El Mundo en su edición de hoy Qtrax ha prometido que las canciones que se descarguen podrán ser almacenadas por los usuarios indefinidamente siempre y cuando se conecten con asiduidad para "renovar su software de gestión de derechos".

Rather than do this, TorrentSpy opted to block users from the United States from its tracker and not to log the remaining users. This however, was not enough for the MPAA, and they continued to go after TorrentSpy and its owner, Justin Bunnel. On the 8 May 2008, a judge decided that Bunnel and several others associated with the company each have to pay $30 000, the maximum amount the law allows, for each of the 3 699 copyright infringements that they were charged with facilitating. This comes out to almost 111 million dollars collectively.

A Hollywood no le ha temblado el pulso, ha llegado hasta el final: TorrentSpy ha quedado noqueado de forma definitiva. El sitio de descargas, que anunció el pasado mes de marzo que dejaba de funcionar, ha sufrido otro mazazo a pesar de su retirada: condenado a pagar más de 71 millones de euros a la industria del cine.

El 24 de marzo TorrentSpy daba un paso decisivo, ahogado financieramente tras dos años de pleitos con los grandes estudios, decidía cerrar. Por aquel entonces otro de los motivos que ofrecieron en su web es que los tribunales les obligaban a proporcionar datos que son "incompatibles" con su política de privacidad.

Según informa CNET, Dan Glickman, el presidente de la MPAA -la asociación que agrupa a las grandes productoras de Hollywood- espera que esta condena tenga un efecto ejemplarizante y siembre un precedente: "La desaparición de TorrentSpy es una clara victoria para los estudios y demuestra a los sitios piratas no se les permitirá seguir funcionando", en defensa de los derechos de autor.

Sin embargo, TorrentSpy no alojaba películas, ayudaba a localizarlas por lo que facilitaba el acceso a los archivos torrent. El sistema de intercambio de archivos basado en el protocolo BitTorrent consiste en establecer una red entre usuarios que buscan descargarse el mismo archivo. La ventaja sobre otro tipo de protocolos P2P consiste en que trocea el material a compartir y distribuye distintas partes de este a cada usuario, estableciendo una red en paralelo. De modo que cada persona intercambia sus pedazos hasta que logra reunirlos todos.

Eso le pasa a TorrentSpy, por andar de pirata. La gente de bien solo baja rips legales de películas de mininova.org, y especificamente de aXXo (los mejores rips).

¿Cómo se llega a esta cifra? Bueno, para empezar la demanda identificaba 3.699 descargas ilegítimas, y la ley establece que la reparación por cada infracción no ha de ser menos a USD 750 ni mayor a USD 30.000. Si bien la jueza pudo haber determinado que el sitio como un todo era culpable de una sola infracción, decidió multarlos con USD 30.000 por cada uno de los torrents identificados. Total: 110 millones y 970.000 dólares.

Durante el juicio, la corte había ordenado a TorrentSpy identificar a los usuarios infractores y proveer esa información para perseguir individualmente a los culpables de descargar el contenido con derechos de autor. TorrentSpy no presentó lo exigido y por tanto perdió por default, en lo que la corte interpretó como destrucción de evidencia.

En cuanto al cierre definitivo, viene más que nada a remachar la puerta que Burnell cerró por fuera cuando a fines de marzo decidió por cuenta propia terminar con el sitio para proteger la privacidad de los usuarios.

Once a seeded file has been downloaded and spread over a few tens of nodes the rate at which it can be downloaded by others increases almost exponentially with a cascade like effect. Other people of the peer to peer network are lured into downloading this file based on the number of people who have it therefore assuming it must be genuine and would be comparatively quick to obtain. Couple this with a topical or sought-after song / album or file aimed at the masses (who statistically would contain a fair percentage of PC-illiterate users and those with a penchance for agreeing to all the pop ups they come across) means these files explode across networks.

This malicious file in question appears to have masqueraded as a MP3 by Girls Aloud. Given the fact that on running the file pops up a message saying the computer requires a codec to play the song and tries to direct you to a website in order to download it, most computer users would stop and reexamine what they had just downloaded. People that brazenly proceeded and downloaded the malicious 'codec' package had spyware installed on their system which would 'bombard' users with pop ups. Also, the download file would spawn copies of itself within the User's shared folder under different names to try to make itself attractive to a greater audience.

But what happened? How were people tricked into downloading an MP3 file but ended up running a malicuous program? The answer to this lies in the file type. Broadly speaking, there are two ways in which a file can be opened:

1) via script or binary execution (e.g. .exe, .com, .vbs, .java, .scr ... and some others)

2) via program read from an external application (e.g. .txt, .doc, .wav, .mpg, .avi .... and MANY more.)

MP3 files (Moving Picture Experts Group version 1 audio layer 3) are the latter, upon execution, Windows searches through its list of known file extensions stored in the registry to see what it should do. It instantly finds the entry for MP3 and sees this type of file is handled by a media player like Windows Media Player, WinAMP, iTunes etc etc. Windows then executes the media player which, on loading, opens the MP3 file specified in the command line argument, decodes a block, fills its buffer and starts to play. Unless a clever trick like a buffer overflow is used, which have historically been responsible for security breaches in various Windows programs as well as console homebrew development, this renders all 'program read' type files harmless*. As such we have to look elsewhere for the source of this problem.

That brings us nicely to the point I wanted to raise in this post, file extensions and more specifically, security vulnerabilities in their implementation. Recent versions of Windows from XP (and possibly earlier, I can not remember) have automatically hidden the file extension by default leaving the user to distinguish between file types by iconographic representations. Whilst at times this is both cleaner looking and more functional, it does present an interesting security problem, what if there are two file extensions? Window will quite happily truncate the file .xxx from a file name leaving the first extension, despite the fact Windows ignores anything before the final .xxx . As a result, if you name a file SomethingInteresting.mp3.exe, in its default state, Windows will happily display the file as SomethingInteresting.mp3 but will execute the file as an EXE when double clicked. Obviously, if you quieried the file by right clicking on it and selecting properties you would be immediately told what type of file it is, but most people will take the file at face value.

Luckily there is a very simple way to gaurd against such black magic, in Windows XP and Vista** in the file browser, goto the Tools menu and select Folder Options.

In this dialog, uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' and click Apply followed by clicking Apply to all folders.

And that's it! A simple check box and some common sense now separates you from being lured into downloading fake or malicious files.

* Some files like some movies can have containers which direct the media player or operating system to web pages. It is not just media files which are vulnerable but this is a completely different topic.

** In Vista you may have to enable the classic menu

BitTorrent tracker TorrentSpy may have shut down last month, but that wasn't enough to prevent a federal judge from slapping the site with a $111 million fine yesterday. While BitTorrent didn't host any copyrighted materials on their own servers, the service did make it easy for users to illegally trade files. And the judge ruled that TorrentSpy's operators should pay $30,000 for each of the 3,699 instances of copyright infringement shown in the case.

Anyone familiar with sites like TorrentSpy knows that it's possible the site got off easy, as there were probably far more than 3699 copyrighted files made available through the site. On the other hand, TorrentSpy has already declared bankruptcy, and is incapable of paying the high fine. If the site hadn't already shut down, this ruling would most certainly have forced it to do so. A lawyer for TorrentSpy says the company plans to appeal.

This case was the first major test of the legality of BitTorrent sites in the US. Something tells me it won't be the last.

Segundo o Ibope/Net Ratings, 9,4 milhões de brasileiros baixam músicas, filmes dentre outros tipos de arquivos por meio de programas de P2P ou sites de hospedagem. O eMule é o software mais utilizado, com 17,2% de participação. Em segundo lugar aparece o precário RapidShare, com 12,3%.

Vale lembrar que a maioria dos arquivos baixados é ilegal. Grande parte dos artistas parece não ligar mais para isso. Nine Inch Nails, Madonna, Radiohead, Coldplay, Cansei de Ser Sexy já disponibilizaram, inclusive, canções através de download gratuito. O cantor Neil Young avalia que a postura dos fãs trocarem e baixarem músicas na internet já é um caminho sem volta.

Não se trata apenas de um movimento dos artistas. A Universal Music anunciou sua adesão a serviço de música grátis na web.

No vídeo, ocorre movimento similar. A página Plugged In oferece clipes e shows de bandas conhecidas. Fez parceria com Universal, Sony BMG e EMI. Há também o Hulu, uma joint venture entre News Corp e NBC, que disponibiliza episódios completos de seriados.

Com qualidade de DVD, gratuito e legalizado. Mas há ainda quem pense diferente.
