Hello all :) I have returned to the blog world after a few days of enjoying the lovely weather and trying to relax. Of course, I obviously didn't relax a whole lot because I finished the rest of my Animal Alphabet. Here they are in all their cute glory:

I'm so proud of how it turned out. You'll notice that I changed a few things from the first few teasers images. The backgrounds are different and I changed the font to white. These will be listed on Etsy around 8pm EST tonight as a limited edition of only 25 prints of each design. And for those who are curious, yes I do plan to self-published a little book with these but it's still in the planning stages with a few decisions yet to be made so it will probably be a couple of months down the road before these will be in existence, if at all.

Now onto the new giveaway for this week! Up for grabs this week is a mini-print of one of the animal alphabet critters. Your mini print will measure 3 x 3 inches on the same lovely paper I use for all of my prints. Just leave a comment here telling me which of my animal alphabet illustrations is your favorite. Comments will be open until Saturday around 8am EST so all my international peeps will also get a fair chance to enter. Then I will randomly select a winner sometime Saturday afternoon.

Enjoy!

We are back from having moved enough furniture and belongings to fill a 16 ft. truck and two Saturn

We are back from having moved enough furniture and belongings to fill a 16 ft. truck and two Saturn Ions from our home to Jenna's and Jen's new apartment in Lubbock, followed by a couple of days unpacking and getting them settled in. A few days after our return, we saw Ali off at the airport so that she could meet Matthew in California for their three-year dating anniversary. This week is just a short, empty-nesting preview, but the real thing will be coming all too soon.

Although it's a slow time of the year for selling real estate, we've had enough interest in the house to keep us paranoid about leaving daily messes. We thought we had a young family showing interest in the house toward evening yesterday when we spied a couple and three children examining our creek. They left and then returned with others collecting under the trees on our creek-front property for thirty minutes or more. Over the years, we've had several mistake it for public property and we eventually concluded that it was probably a church group. We made our presence known by taking the dog out and getting the mail, but they still seemed clueless that they were trespassing. We saw no harm in what they were doing so we didn't tell them or ask them to leave.

My typical summer morning routine takes about an hour with pets, tidying, and some yard work -- and then there's too little to do the rest of the day. Earlier this week I got another glance at one of our creek owls gliding over my head as I was watering. I awoke this morning and immediately took Phoebe outside, as I normally do. We've had some rain lately so instead of grabbing the hose to start watering potted plants, I sat in a lawn chair to enjoy the cooler morning for a few minutes. I looked across the pool and spotted a familiar face cautiously peering back at me. Butterball? What was he doing outside? Happy to see me, he came running as soon as I called and I put him inside, but I soon realized that Sox was also missing. I dressed and began looking for him, first in the house, and then outside. Finally, Steve awoke and began looking too. He'd gone to bed late and they must have escaped when he let Phoebe out one last time before he went to bed. They're inside cats and don't usually even try to go outdoors. We had just about given up finding him when suddenly I saw Sox timidly sitting in just about the same place that I'd seen Butterball earlier. I sat on the diving board, wiggled my fingers and coaxed him to me. About that time, I spied a probable victim floating lifelessly in the pool -- a good sized rodent the cats had probably chased to its demise. They may have had an adventure, but both were glad to be back inside.

With all that done, this is the time of morning I usually start hearing footsteps bounding down the stairs -- but strangely, it's very, very quiet.

Baking My Owl, originally uploaded by m-oo.

Yesterday, I attended the Pasadena Bead & Design Show for two workshops on polymer clay with Christi Friesen. The photo above is of my owl (yay!) baking in our counter-top convection oven. I've only used this thing twice to bake pizza. On a pizza stone. (Yes, that's right, the oven came with its own stone.)

We didn't have time to finish our owls in the workshop, so I brought him home to complete his talons, and popped him in the oven for over an hour. At this point, he's chillin' on the kitchen counter, awaiting a name. Any suggestions?

The first workshop with Christi was making floral focal beads, but I imagine they can be whatever you want, depending on your mood. My design was entirely haphazard and each element was placed on because of one accident after another.

That's how I roll.

All in all, it came out alright for my first encounter with polymer clay. Technique-wise, I would prefer to be more detailed and careful, but time was of the essence and everyone kept saying that if you didn't mean for it to turn out that way, just say you did.

Frankly, I'd rather not. I want to be really good at something, thank you. Plus, I compete with the likes of this guy, who happens to be the man I sleep with.

I didn't have time to see everything at the show in one day, but I found some owls, including an inro boxwood that I will use to stash my weed.

Just kidding. I don't inhale. I've never even tried a cigarette. And now, you don't want to party with me.

These little guys below were too adorable to pass up and will be made into earrings.

Besides polymer clay and owls, I attended a free workshop, where we made little pendants for ourselves using Art Clay. Once the clay is fired or placed into a kiln, it becomes 99.99% fine silver. It's expensive material so I don't think I'll be using any just yet. You can see the Fleur de Lis (of course) that I stamped into the clay, burnished, and then polished using an agate brush. We weren't allowed to fire our own pieces because the fire department thought we may set everyone aflame, so the instructors showed us their techniques.

Technically, I could melt this down and sell it to silver people that want silver for their silver things.

PS.
I traded the aggressive sailfin molly for a female and two guppies. Now we have eight fishies.

Eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture. I'm sure you already realized that was the reason for the Beijing Olympics starting on 08-08-08 at 08:08. No? Well, I'm glad to have brought an irreverent fact into your life. Use it at the next party you didn't invite me to.

And speaking of the Olympics, holy Phelps!
Did you see his .01 win?
A blogger friend on another blogg site has heard the same. She lives near me. She says hearing a hoot owl signals that summer is ending & autumn is approaching. Fine by me. She also had some owl facts & got me interested. I googled 'hoot owl' & found some of her

facts & more.

Mystique of the Hoot Owl

The Barred Owl is known by many names (Eight Hooter, Rain Owl, Wood Owl and Striped Owl to name a few) but probably known best as the “Hoot Owl”. He’s no stranger to the Southeast US and he can be found across the Eastern half of North America as far south as the southern tip of Florida and as far north as central Canada. The Hoot Owl is a homebody and generally travels no more than a few miles from his birthplace throughout his whole life of about as many as 10 years in the wild. He mates for life and often reuses the same nest every year. He prefers swamps, wetlands and heavy woodlands but may choose suburban patches of mature evergreens as a suitable home as well. Although he is quite common he’s still a sight to behold when he’s spotted in your own back yard.

Like most species of owls he hunts primarily at night though often one can hear him call during the day. HOOO, HOOO! His haunting voice carries across his domain. His signature call is “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” He sits on a favorite perch and looks from side to side with large, dark brown eyes for the slightest movement of a rodent, insect, spider or tasty amphibian. Although mice are his favorite food he is known to eat fish and frogs as well which throws him into the category of pond predator. Our best defense against the owl is to net the pond so that he can’t get to our pond animals. He’s a raptor and it’s illegal to kill or injure him. It’s even illegal to hold him captive. The Barred Owl’s only natural enemy is the Great Horned Owl but most of the time it is an act of man that kills him. He is shot or becomes road kill. He is hit by cars because he often hunts for rodents in the bushy, over-growth of weeds along the sides of the highway.

He appears to be enormous and can be as tall as 25” with a wingspan of 50” but he is surprisingly light, his weight topping at just over 1 pound. He is brownish-gray with alternating bands of color throughout his body. He does not have the ear tufts that other owl species have. He makes hardly any sound at all when he flies thanks to the unique outer edges of his feathers.

Mythology and Folklore

There has always been a mystique surrounding the owl, regardless of the species. It’s probably the most revered, feared, loved and worshipped bird in the history of the world. The owl is cloaked in superstition and folklore originating from stories spun through hundreds of years and each culture has its own interpretation and many times they conflict.

Boiled owl and owl eggs have been used for medications in Peru and, in English folklore, the owl egg was believed to cure alcoholism. A child given raw owl eggs was then protected from drunkenness throughout his life. In India owl broth was said to cure seizures and the meat used as an aphrodisiac. The Swahili of East Africa were not as sold on Owls for medical purposes. They believed that the owl made children ill.

Athena, the Greek mythological goddess of war and wisdom, chose the Little Owl as a protective symbol. It was believed the owl’s night vision was a magical inner light. The Little Owl adorned coins in the 5th and 2nd century BC and if an owl flew over Greek soldiers it was a sure sign of victory. The Athena Owl remains a symbol used often in today’s society.

In Roman antiquity the owl was not worshipped at all. In fact, it was their belief that an owl’s hoot brought death. It was said that an owl predicted the death of Julius Ceasar, Agrippa, Commodus Aurelius and Augustus. Witches were believed to turn into owls. Ascalpus in Roman Mythology was turned into a Screech Owl by Hades, god of the underworld, as punishment for snitching on Persephone for eating a pomegranate.

The owl in some cultures is evil. He dances with witches, steals treasures, brings bad luck and is a symbol of the underworld. It’s said in Ireland that if an owl enters the house one must kill it before it can carry away the good luck.

The owl in other cultures is very helpful. He helps find husbands for old maids, determines the sex of an unborn child, and, in Belgium, he was the church’s choice for resident pest control.

Legends of the owl are quite amusing. In the Artic North a little girl who was turned into a bird was so scared she flew straight into a wall. It flattened her face and beak. Thus was borne the owl. 12th century English owls were not allowed out during the day because one stole a rose. Menominee (American Indian) owls were not smooth talkers and lost a talking contest to a rabbit who received his choice of day or night. The rabbit chose day so to the loser went the night. Polish owls are just too beautiful. If they come out during the day they are mobbed by other jealous birds.

Poor owls. They’ve endured many more bad raps than good throughout history. Probably the worse offended were the Transylvania owls who were chased off constantly by naked farmers protecting their crops. — And the owl isn’t even a vegetarian!

The adult is 44 cm long with a 112 cm wingspan. It has a pale face with dark rings around the eyes, a yellow beak and brown eyes. It is the only typical owl of the eastern United States which has brown eyes; all others have yellow eyes. The head is round and lacks ear tufts, a distinction from theShort-eared Owl. The upper parts are mottled gray-brown. The underparts are light with markings; the chest is barred horizontally while the belly is streaked lengthwise. The legs and feet are covered in feathers up to the talons.

Distribution and habitat

Breeding habitat is dense woods across Canada, the eastern United States and south to Central America; in recent years it has spread to the western United States. Barred Owls may be partly responsible for the recent decline of the Northern Spotted Owl, native to Washington, Oregon, andCalifornia. Since the 1960s, Barred Owls have been expanding their range westward from the eastern US, perhaps because man made changes have created new suitable habitat in the west. When Spotted Owls and Barred Owls share the same environment, the latter are generally more aggressive and out-compete the former, leading to decreased populations of the native owls.

Recent studies show suburban neighborhoods can be ideal habitat for barred owls. Using transmitters, scientists found that populations increased faster in the suburban settings than in old growth forest. The main danger to owls in suburban settings is from cars. The increased offspring offset the death rate due to impacts from cars and disease.

This video I just had to share.

When this tiny African owl sees a small predator, she puffs her feathers to look bigger and scarier. When she sees a predator 3 times her size, she gets 2 times thinner and pretends to be a twig. The twig is charming. (turn off the sound when watching this video. It's annoying, and it's in Japanese)
