The Pope is requesting that those of us who have walked away from the Catholic Church simply listen to him while he is in the States and take a moment to consider what he's saying. Now, I have to admit, I have little interest in this Pope. Pope John Paul was so many things to so many Catholics around the world that I really wonder if it's possible for Benedict to measure up. Even as a lapsed Catholic myself, I just don't see myself returning to a church that preaches hate (anti-homosexual rhetoric), sexism (not allowing women to become preists), and overpopulation and the spread of disease (not allowing the use of condomns or birth control). The education provided at Catholic Schools is excellent, partially due to the strict nature of the religion and it's followers, but intolerance breeds intolerance. None of my lapsed Catholic friends see anything in this Pope that calls them to return to worship. The world has changed. Religion has changed. The Catholic church has remained largely the same for quite some time.

Or Chinese manufactured toys. Let's take a look at the similarities. The US government gave smallpox laden blankets to the American Indians to weaken the population and make it easier for us to take over the country. It worked out pretty well for us. We were able to slaughter millions because their men were weak and their women were busy taking care of their dying children. So why hasn't anyone taken a good look at the number of poorly manufactured and dangerous toys coming out of China and thought, "This is smallpox all over again." What if the Chinese are trying to distract us, weaken our population, and kill our children so that there will be no one to fight them in generations to come when they are suffering from an enormous overpopulation problem and need more land, more water, and more of pretty much everything. China is dangerous. The time for conventional warfare is over. Countries are looking for new and different ways todestroy each other financially, psychologically, and physically. Why do we assume that we are immune?

I have several thoughts about the wildfires.

1. I heard a story on NPR that hasn't been repeated anywhere else. Apparently a town was issued a mandatory evacuation order and some people refused to obey it. The fires shifted toward the town quickly, and while firefighters were rescuing those who stayed behind. While that was happening, a lot of homes burned down. I think those who refused to obey the evacuation order should be held accountable. They should have to repay the people who had their homes destroyed.

2. People who continually build and rebuild their homes in areas effected year after year by the Santa Ana winds and wildfires should not be allowed to get money from taxpayers or insurance companies to do so. It's just stupid. It's like building houses in areas that constantly get flooded. Freak weather patterns are one thing, but if your home (or any of those around it) is destroyed once every ten years or more, you're an idiot. Build a house somewhere else.

3. People who start fires that destroy thousands of acres of land and kill people should be charged with crimes against humanity and murder as well as arson. It is the worst kind of destruction and deserves no forgiveness.

3,840 US soldiers killed in Iraq. 28,327 US soldiers wounded in this immoral war.

Over 250,000 tires made in China have been recalled, which is just the latest in a serious of danger

Over 250,000 tires made in China have been recalled, which is just the latest in a serious of dangerous and impure products to come out of China recently. We can't cancel our trade agreements with them because (and this is just a theory) we owe them millions of dollars. It's possible that a condition of the loans we're receiving is that we take goods from China not matter what's in them. Should we really be buying things from a country that has come to be known as "the Wild West" of manufacturing?

We're not the only ones who are having problems with Chinese goods. Poisonous cough medicine was shipped to Panama, killing at least 119 people. In light of recent events, Americans should be boycotting goods from China. Besides the many human rights violations happening daily in China, there extremely harmful effects to the envirionment from having goods shipped halfway around the globe. We don't need many of the things we're getting from China, and those we do need can be made right here (such as: apple juice, candy, dried garlic, cocoa butter, sausage casings, and dried berries). The government contends that avoiding food products from China is nearly impossible, but that's not true if you're able to shop locally or you can afford to shop organically. If you can't, eat at your own risk.

There’s been a fury of research about the gays lately. I think it’s probably an attempt

There's been a fury of research about the gays lately. I think it's probably an attempt to neutralize the issue so that it's not a large part of the upcoming election. One researcher thinks that a person's homosexuality can be perceived by the way they walk. If that's true, I'll be watching the Republican National Convention VERY carefully. More Americans are beginning to believe that if a person IS gay, he or she was born that way. I think that would stand to reason as I can't imagine people would choose to be ostracized by a majority of their society, such as the military and the Christians. Maybe this is our biological answer to overpopulation and the homosexual community should be celebrated as humanity's saviors.

I don’t believe in supporting the movie industry. I think it has sold out in a variety of ways

I don't believe in supporting the movie industry. I think it has sold out in a variety of ways, and I'm not going to get into them now. I haven't gone to see it yet, but I feel I should support Evan Almighty for its work in creating a green set. Whatever your stance on Global Warming, it goes without saying that humans need to reduce their impact on the environment. I applaud Universal Studios, director Tom Shadyac, and The Conservation Fund for setting a new standard for making movies.

In the same general vein, Big Ideas for a Small Planet on the Sundance Channel has become one of my favorite series. It has given us a lot of great ideas for things we can do around the house and organizations we can get involved in to help reduce our carbon footprint.

And in totally off-the-wall environmental news, a lake in Chile has disappeared recently. It's probably not due to Global Warming, though a rise in the suspected earthquakes may be connected to climate change.

War is never good for the environment, but it's GREAT for overpopulation:
3,557 US Soldiers killed in Iraq
26,129 US Soldiers wounded in Iraq (at least we'll have a use for some of those plastics)
