I thaught I was going to test Lucy on Metal Camp, but due to some (unknown to me) reason I was told that I'm not on the list of accredited photographers. Few hours before I left... After I was told I was on the list... Never mind. Had some other things to do anyway... But a bit later I got the chance to test Lucy anyway, got accreditation for Riblja Čorba in Ankaran. The concert was great (a bit long maybe (3 bands and starting an hour late), at least for me, who had to drive across 1/2 a country to get back home :D) and I've learned (the hard way 'course) that mosquito repellent is important piece of equipment for concert photographer! :D

There is also a saying singing virtues of a Willow....that bends... not like a proud Oak tree that refuses to bend....and breaks in a storm ....

According to Wikipedia ……Outsider often refers to one identified as on the periphe

According to Wikipedia ......Outsider often refers to one identified as on the periphery of social norms, one living or working apart from mainstream society, or one observing a group from the outside, as used in:

Outsider Art, created by artists working outside the mainstream art world

Outsider music, composed or performed by musicians working outside the musical mainstream

So an outsider has the following traits:

   He/She works outside the mainstream

He/She observes the world from outside

   He/She is a non-conformist

.....but by no stretch of imagination....an outsider is a no-gooder !

In fact......an outsider USUALLY provides the main stream with the so called PRACTICAL TIPS for living a more meaningful life !!!

When you're out of your element and not happy the world can be a very bad place. If you're like me and get you find yourself getting lost in your mind constantly that can either lead to good things or bad things. Friends are the world to me, and I love them all to death. But sometimes, even though we can all fit together perfectly, I feel like such an outsider. Optimism, charisma, energy, and confidence the three of them have is something I sadly do not possess. Taking pictures and watching youtube videos at sleepovers can get very boring very fast. I don't know what it is about me. I just get bored of the usual things. Sitting by a computer watching videos I've seen and could care less about over and over is not for me (unless I really like it). I could just sit down on the couch and watch them take picture after picture with the timer and not care that I'm in them. But still the fun they have I wish I could have. It's very hard to deal with feeling like an outsider. It almost makes me sick to my stomach to just wonder what they're probably thinking about tired old me curled up on the couch with her ipod while the rest of them are dressed up with short shorts and tank tops (which is a look I can't even pull off) dancing in front of the flash.

Why am I so different?

(On the day that I read that a Roman Catholic Church in Toxteth, Liverpool, was about to start using the Tridentine Mass exclusively - services in Latin - again, I was reminded of this parable that I wrote some years ago.)

The mountains were cypress-green and breathtakingly beautiful. Spiros was standing in one of the most impressive parts of Greece. On a brilliant spring morning he was at the foot of Mount Parnassus, a few miles from Corinth. In spite of the beauty, all he could think about was the problem of the boat which had become stuck on the sands of his mind for some weeks now.

Should he buy it, or shouldn't he? If he didn't decide soon, it would be too late. He had the money. Some had been left by his father; the rest had been painfully saved over the past ten years. But now, at the moment of decision, he seemed paralysed, unable to jump. It was such an important decision, such a lot of money, and he urgently needed a message from the gods. His wife had sent him to Delphi because her sister had been helped. Rumour and family superstition or experience had combined to help Spiros half believe that the Delphic Oracle would make the divine will known.

And behind all this Spiros was driven by factors that were working at a less conscious level. Of course, he missed his father dreadfully, and at night, or alone in the harbour, suppressed questions surfaced. Was there life beyond the grave? Would he be good enough to please the gods? Would he ever see his father again? Were the gods really in control? Did the gods really exist?

Perhaps the visit to the temple of Apollo would count for something. It might even provide a few answers.

Spiros felt his shyness acutely as he approached the temple. He tried to look serious and avoided eye contact with the others as he stood uneasily in the queue and waited for his turn to come. Perhaps he should have listened to his wife after all and worn the other clothes. The place seemed so strange and the glum faces of the other enquirers depressed him even more. He comforted himself with the fact that the embarrassment of leaving now and of pushing past the others to get out would be greater than the threat of staying. The ease of home was now as far away as the boat of his dreams.

Spiros knew that they would want his money (religious people usually did), but even so, the price that he had to pay for the sacrificial lamb still came as rather a shock. As he handed over the precious coins with poise and feigned devotion, he allowed himself to chuckle inwardly as he remembered the joke about the sinking ship. As it was going down in one of the storms off Crete, a desperate sailor had screamed out: "Somebody do something religious. We are about to die!" And at that point another sailor picked up a plate and started taking a collection. Spiros now felt the bitterness of the boat more keenly than ever.

As the lamb was routinely disembowelled, Spiros noticed the priest's indifference to the blood and the gore. The religious man had seen it all before many, many times. Spiros wasn't normally squeamish, but this spectacle offended his sensibilities and made him want to vomit. He wouldn't be coming back in a hurry to such an horrific scene.

After briefly inspecting the carcass, the priest assured him that the omens were good. But Spiros had no intention of hanging around to ask questions, and nobody seemed willing to tell him more. After all, the man had spoken, so who was Spiros to challenge the initiated?

A man in strange clothes and a hard face took more money and then put Spiros' request on to a lead tablet. Again, there was more ceremony that Spiros didn't understand before he was eventually ushered into the inner temple and mystery. At last! The route to possible understanding had been long, embarrassing, and costly (not least for the dead lamb).

A few yards in front of him a priestess in ritual garments was sitting on a stool near a chasm in the rock. She ignored his presence, and this apparent aloofness made Spiros feel both angry and afraid. Was she mad? It certainly looked as if she was out of control. He remembered that his sister-in-law has said something about a woman fainting. The fumes from the chasm were obviously important to the ceremony. The priestess inhaled them eagerly and mumbled incomprehensibly. So this was it, thought Spiros, the heart of the religious experience.

He strained forward to catch her words. It was no good. He would never remember what she was saying and it made no clear sense anyway. Religious mumbo-jumbo? A foreign language? How was he to know?

Spiros could feel his contempt rising, although he was afraid to show his anger in the apparent presence of Apollo. How could he make sense of all this? As he looked around seeking scraps of information, and an escape, he noticed a scribe writing frantically. Perhaps the scribe knew the language. A few more scribbles and contortions of the face (obviously reflecting inspiration) and then the man looked at Spiros (or rather through him) and spoke: "One of the signs of the growing of truth is the clouds in the heavens. Look to the winds for the direction of life and the shifting of treasure."

Years later a learned friend of his would tell Spiros that he had been taken in by the subconscious effects of the poetry. At the time, Spiros had just been thrilled to hear something in his own language, even if it did sound rather vague and archaic. For more money it was copied out again for him and Spiros left with his answer. At least somebody had communicated what Apollo wanted. Spiros felt that his need had been met.

It was obvious to Spiros that Apollo was telling him to buy the boat. He would make a fortune by using the wind to fill its sails.

Three-and-a-half years later, as he started a life sentence for debt, Spiros began to wonder if he had misunderstood what Apollo had said. The religious man (who, incidentally, had bought the boat that had belonged to the prisoner at a knock-down price) was convinced that Spiros had got into debt, not because Apollo was wrong, but because Spiros must have been a bad man. At least now Spiros would have more time to contemplate both what happened at Delphi, and his decision.

Day Thirty-Four, Central Park

Day Thirty-Four, Central Park

I came into the city to see Mike Birbiglia do stand-up at Central Park Summerstage. Who knew it would be sold out? (Or what is the proper term for a free show filled up to capacity?) The nice thing is that I've found a spot next to a barricade on the west side of the stage where a bunch of us sitting here can hear Mike almost perfectly. Less than five minutes after I sat down, a guy comes walking up the stairs to join the crowd of, what, five of us. And it turns out to be Ptolemy, an old comedy friend.

A big realization I've had recently is that I enjoy being on the periphery of events more than I like being thrust inside the events themselves. Out here Ptolemy could have a quaint little exchange about how it's Mike's birthday so they're going out for pizza afterwards. Then as he was walking away, I asked Ptolemy how things were. He shouted from a distance that he had gotten married and held up his newly ringed finger. Then Mike told a punch line about how "peeing blood meant one of five things. Three of them are you're dying. And the other two aren't a trip to the Bahamas." By the time he got to the end of it, Ptolemy was gone.

Now we've moved on to a musical comedian (pilot for CBS and three Comedy Central specials AND it's his birthday yet Birbiglia hasn't earned the headlining spot...sheesh). A gorgeous night has fallen on Central Park. And I can casually take out Slackbook the Macbook on a Friday night and carelessly blog away. I couldn't be happier to be in New York with summer about to break.

Chester, a Pembroke corgi, owned by Mr. Law, is being attacked by Nosferatu, who is really Mr. Law's janitor. Nosferatu is trying to suck all of Mr. Law's riches via his dog as bait. Mr. Law then receives telepathic messages from Chester saying "help me, help me!" Therefore, it's up to Mr. Law to save Chester from Nosferatu, do away w/ his old janitor, and secure his riches. The painting was exhibited in my Guilty Pleasures art show, 2006.

It's the combination of cute and creepy that makes me think of Henry Darger's Vivian Girls, here. The juxtaposition of vibrant life and staid death. Innocence and experience. We always think of children as not understanding death or its implications. Which is ironic since neither do adults. So maybe more than the juxtaposition of cute and creepy it's really the juxtaposition of the happy gate-keepers and the inordinately sad little tombstones of children that make this vignette so unsettling.

In reading Mitch Cullin's Tideland, I'm finding I can read about children again. But I haven't been able to for quite some time. The heroine of the tale, Jeliza-Rose, reminds me of a Vivian Girl, too, with her plucky insistence on seeing the mystery and beauty of the world despite, or perhaps in spite of, the incredibly hopeless and depressing world that surrounds her. Children are resilient and optimistic and curious. Maybe it really is pretty hard to mess them up, unless, of course, you crush their optimism and deny their curiosity. Or underestimate their potential, ignoring their innate, naive understanding of the natural world and its rhythms and inhabitants.

This strange little assemblage is sticking with me, popping up in my dreams. I like the mystery of it and that it conjures up so many questions. Maybe questions we don't really need to know the answers to.

Runtime: 93 Minutes - Country: USA - Produced for TV by Hallmark

This quiet drama-flick is focusing on the eventful life of the Miller-family, who is almost likewise consisting of hearing and deaf people. Daniel Miller (Jeff Daniels) and his wife Laura (Marlee Matlin), who is deafened; have an 8-year-old son named Adam (Noah Valencia). At first it seemed like there were no real complications, but when Adam got older there were the first problems to appear. There is an audiotape with one of the last recordings of a speaking Adam - but this is already over 5 years old.

So they find themselves in a serious familiar struggle: after Adam had slightly injured himself while playing in the garden, his father Daniel first heard about the so called Cochlear Implant by a local doctor. He is sceptical; his wife even totally denies to face this option - but soon he is getting more and more comfortable with the idea, this way of a possible improvement of his life... he is starting to do some basic researches in the internet, arranging the first continuative appointments - much to the disapproval of his deaf wife.

Adam can not listen to the tunes that his father is playing, but he can feel the music...

First of all: certainly, this is a topic that you might have stumbled upon, it is often treated in TV-series. But I have to state it: personally I have not seen many films on this important topic ! The overall keyword and main subject-matter would be deafness - a story of a young boy and his family; with all members having very different opinions and standpoints on how to deal with the hearing loss of Adam. So, one could certainly expect a great family drama; with two of the main family members being deaf; and a hearing father who is living with them; who can only use sign language to communicate - this mixed with some detailed pro's and con's or advantages and disadvantages on the Cochlear Implatant and the culture of the deaf in general...

At least that is what I expected. But focusing on it this way, I am rather disappointed. Just because the storyline is so promising, leaving so much possible room for discussion, unique messages, conversations et cetera - but in the film itself there is this certain "forced mood"; which makes it feel rather unrealistic and cold. Too bad - since a film like this would only work with heartwarming and believeable characters and a bigger attention to the smaller details also. The overall athmosphere just did not make me feel very comfortable - maybe also because, and that is my main negative aspect that I would like to mention here: the film is annoyingly reduced - including both characters and storyline.

Adam, who faces a neighbourhood child who bullied on him becasuse of his disability

Adam, certainly one of the main characters (he should be!) - is an 8-year-old boy who got deaf. Just tell me, why would the audience not get to hear anything about himself ? The whole film turns out to be portraying a serious conflict among the parents, involving their parents also - caused by a neverending discussion on the pro's and con's of a Cochlear Implant. Of course, the son is 8 years old and could not really decide anything - but why is he not even informed about what is going on between the parents ? They do not seem to really interact nor even talk with their son; from who we do not get to know anything - this certainly is a bad mixture for a family drama with children involved. Since it feels like they are steady talking about one big topic; which is affecting one of the closest family members. And altough this family member is standing right beside them, you can not get a felling for the connection. At least that is how I feel - I would ascribe this to the average cinematography, the cold acting; and most certainly: the uninspiring script... I can only remember one single scene in which Adam has been bullied by a neighbourhood kid - I guess this was the first and only time the focus has actually been laid on him (and his deafness) alone...

Daniel and Laura are arguing a lot about her son and his possible future

Since the overall battle and argumentation between the "deaf culture" and their "opponents" (at least that is what is at times portrayed here) is starting to become hilarious at some points - take the overall court scene for my example on this. And of course: why would they have even gone there ? Maybe I would have taken this for serious, if there had not been this artificial ending that makes everything even worse... do not get me wrong, I like open endings - but certainly not in this case. I also like the message that love is the most important thing and source of power that can carry you thorough hard times, this is what the end actually consists of - but it fails here. And this is also referable to the characters development - the parents are arguing very often, having so much conflicts that it seems that they could become divorced; all because of the Choclear Implant and the possible positive and/or negative effects. Just to become totally enlightened in the end ? But it seems that this form of "enlightenment" is relativizing all of the past events and discussions they had - they have each other, and that is what counts... good, but let me ask one question: what about the son; and the result of the main discussion we fortunately came to watch in the past 90 minutes ?

Finally... will all things come to a good end ?

But I guess this is up to the viewers, such as the answer to many questions that are occurring while watching this one - volitional or not. For example, why did the producers choose to go for rather annoying voice-overs here ? It does not really seem to fit; I would definitely have recommended subtitles. Reconsidering this film again - it is only an average, but still a worth watching flick. Since it can initiate many further discusions on the general topic of deafness; by offering a (slight) inside view on their culture, and their way of interacting with hearing people. Also, it is offering some pro's and con's on the Choclear Implant - I certainly like that the film stays rather neutral, in conclusion. Nothing exciting to say about the technical part; the actors however are doing an average job at least. Finally: certainly none of my favourite films. Mainly because I expected an interesting family drama with lots of backgrounds, a main focus on the person the whole story actually is about - but rather got to see a familiar couple crisis. Not a simple or very usual one, though - but all of the characters are just badly reduced; such as the whole main topic: 5.1/10.

The Milky Way galaxy, big and beautiful, billions and billions of stars, dust, debris, lots of dark stuff and deep in the slow zone: the humans pondering the universe because their fuel economy is really bad.

For years we assumed that the dear Galaxy had 4 arms - now the boffins at NASA labs, where the future is being made today, have discovered the sad discovery that The Milky Way only has two arms!

That is so sad. Poor Galaxy.

life in the city series

wasps dance before me
together we’re alone
delicate and dangerous
flitting, stinging, flapping wings
moving, flying, never still.

i weep cola in offering
the tribute of a guest
on grass and tree their ground
sharing ceremony’s gifts.

they have landed
changing glances
walking feelers blaring
giving and receiving hisses song.

slow motion female
passes my eyes
droning beauty’s buzzing
an angel with wings
whispering in my ear.

they gather at the pools and drink
the tonic mixes into mud
it dries and they scatter
i wonder where they nest.

into the darkness they sink
lost within the can
male inspects my hand
as i record another falls
the attack begins.

rising from the drink
the hive’s aroused
fury’s pageant in their mist
dogs bark in the distance
i rise to abandon.

here now they follow
their mythology lives
hunter hunting hunted
the wasp and me.
