With a marketing operation heavily focused on the Joker, the flick trailers that followed presented

With a marketing operation heavily focused on the Joker, the flick trailers that followed presented a Joker with sloppy, predictive clown makeup that looked as though it had been applied in a windstorm. The brief footage revealed a feature whose cackling humor cannot conceal the malevolent soul beneath. "Whatever Heath channeled into, he's found something very much extraordinary," Oldman said. "It's arguably one of the greatest partition villains I think I've ever seen.

" Fans were hooked, but some were skeptical when Oscar ring for the performance started circulating after Ledger's death. Comic-book tales and other big action flicks scarcely are taken seriously by awards voters, who are willing to honor them for technical achievements but generally not for acting. Skepticism dissolved once Warner Bros. began screenings for "The Dark Knight.

" "Heath Ledger didn't so much give a behaviour as he disappeared utterly into the role," filmmaker and lifelong comics supporter Kevin Smith said on his MySpace blog after seeing "The Dark Knight." "I remember I'm not the first to suggest this, but he'll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for best supporting actor." Ledger's carrying out is surpassing even the sky-high expectations hardcore fans have current in. "He was better than I thought he was going to be," said Bill Ramey, stumble of the fan Web site , who caught an advance press screening.

"I meditate he legitimately would deserve an Oscar nomination, not just out of sympathy to his passing, but because he was just fantastic in the movie. … It's make right up there with Hannibal Lecter," which earned Anthony Hopkins an Oscar for "The Silence of the Lambs." Along with Finch, previous posthumous Oscar contenders include James Dean, who was nominated for best actor twice after his death, with 1955's "East of Eden" and 1956's "Giant." The other actors nominated after their deaths were Spencer Tracy (1967's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"); Ralph Richardson (1984's "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes"); Massimo Troisi (1995's "The Postman"); and Jeanne Eagels (1929's "The Letter").

The emanation adjoining Ledger since his extermination is a movement that, such as Dean, he could endure as a mythic emblem of talent silenced before his time. Ledger had a best-actor nomination for 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" and was considered a superb performer just coming into his own. That will not necessarily improve his Oscar chances.

Dean had two shots after his obliteration and lost both. "The fact that only one actor has ever won an Oscar from the dour tells us that in general at the Oscars, the feeling is when you're dead, you're dead," said Tom O'Neil, a columnist for , an awards Web site. "Maybe the relevancy is that the Oscars are all about hugs. Nobody wants to snuggle a dead guy." Oscar voters nurse to hand out the trophies for heroic or sympathetic roles, so Ledger's supremely evil characterization could certify a drawback along with the action-genre stigma.

Yet there are notable instances when actors playing villains made such an imitation that academy members could not resist voting for them.

I don’t applaud at the end of movies, and I never will. But if any movie ever made me want to

I don't applaud at the end of movies, and I never will. But if any movie ever made me want to it was Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. Truly, it was incredible.

Heath Ledger and the Joker

Let me start with Heath Ledger as that seems to be all anyone can talk about. That's why I'll make it brief and get onto other things since you all already know how good he is. His performance is unrivaled. Simply unrivaled. What's more, I'm certainly not the first person to say that he deserves an Oscar. I could drone on, but it's really that simple when it comes to Ledger so I'm not going to dwell.

I will say that I love the way the concept of Joker was written, which really had very little to do with Ledger, I'd imagine. That is, Nolan's Joker truly embodied the chaos and anarchy that the character was meant to. Unlike Nicholson's Joker whose history we are given, this Joker knows no history and the twisted words out of his mouth about himself make that all the more apparent. This Joker, in spirit, is the ultimate opposite of what Batman is and by very virtue of that fact the character itself may render all future Batman villains in this series somewhat disappointing. How could any be as twisted, maniacal or disturbing. That, with Ledger conveying these elements: unbeatable.

The Cast

No actor fell short in this film. Christian Bale's character wasn't nearly as tormented as in Batman Begins and so in a certain sense we get less out of him than before. Nonetheless, his performance was nothing to scoff at. He still made a great Bruce Wayne and an excellent Batman - though sometimes the deep pitch of his voice while playing the Dark Knight made understanding him a little hard.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was, I dare say, better than Katie Holmes, who, already having taken the crazy-plunge by the start of Batman Begins, wasn't the wonderful girl I fantasized about during Dawson's Creek. This Rachel wasn't as hell-bent on saving Gotham, but she did have a spark - a life - that made her a great addition to the movie.

My feelings about Aaron Eckhart are mixed (potential spoiler alert - this paragraph only). I think he's a great actor and entertaining fella to watch on screen. As Harvey Dent trying to be Gotham's new hero D.A. he was compelling and believable - like the good guy many of us imagined him to be in Thank You For Smoking. I will say that by the end of the film, something about his performance was not adding up for me. Disappointing since as many people know by the previews, the third installment of this Batman series will most likely have Aaron Eckhart playing our villain (or at least one of them).

As a Film

The movie itself, actors aside - script, plot, themes, action - was sensational. Yes, the actors made it what it was, but Christopher Nolan deserves a hat off for this one. In true Batman spirit it was dark as could reasonably be done. Moreover, as absolutely twisted as it was and as much as we were visually privy to, Nolan never made us watch the few things that would have been unnecessary to show and only good for shock value (well, not only, but close). The discretion he exercised as a writer/director should be lauded. Finally, I was shocked by at least two facts that I didn't see coming at all, and was so caught up that the plot twists were surprises to me as well - I love that when I'm watching a movie.

And yet with all this the movie was not simply great acting amidst exciting action sequences. It was food for thought. Mostly thanks to the dialogue written for Joker, the film intimately explored ideas as simple as right and wrong while also probing our hearts about human nature. We are made to practically plead with the film to reaffirm or restore our sense of human decency and it reminds us, without making us feel as though it's trying to, that we are allowed to hope for better, brighter things. Concepts like the rule of law, anarchy, justice and more are also woven throughout the movie. Not once, though, are we made to sit through a director's attempt at jamming anything down our throats. All of this is skillfully and seamlessly interlaced through dialogue, action, and plot, leaving you at the end to digest a whole lot more than what you thought you were getting for the price of admission (in some sense the opposite of the feeling you had when The Happening ended).

The Audience

I have never in my life seen a crowd like this. Applause before previews, when it began, periodically throughout and of course at the end. There was a huge line waiting to get in before the movie, but thanks to my sick girlfriend, we were able to bypass the whole thing and be the first ones in the theater. This, naturally, resulted in a threat on my life by the man first in line who had probably been there two hours ahead of time (we arrived thirty minutes before the start of the movie), and though I understand his disposition, I have a tough time believing that, as the second person in the theater, I picked the precise seat before him that he had so desperately waited to get.

There was not an empty seat in the house - and this at a theater that had midnight, three a.m. and six a.m. showings, and then all day right until ours. Fortunately I had my favorite seat in the house - dead center in the middle of the theater, both up and down, left and right. It really couldn't have worked out better ... for me.

Words to Leave You With

To conclude succinctly, this movie exceeded my expectations, and considering that they were so high, this was nearly impossible to do. When I expect great things from a movie, I rarely get them, a sad fact which resulted in my movie philosophy of no expectations but a hope for entertainment. This film, however, shattered the highest expectations I may ever have had for a movie. I thought it was over twice - and would have been wholly satisfied had it been - and was twice given another slew of great action, dialogue and entertainment. And so much more.

For a truly spectacular film, I award my first full 10 Chocolate Salty Balls. Someone tell Nolan - he'll be thrilled.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts about this film in a comment below.

The Dark Knight’s Ghastly Joker: Heath Ledger Touted for an Oscar

The Dark Knight's Ghastly Joker: Heath Ledger Touted for an Oscar

Handsome is as handsome doesn't in The Dark Knight. Of the three male actors who dominate the movie, it's Heath Ledger with his face hidden behind twisted clown makeup, whose perfect features are never seen, who has proven to be the most memorable. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight is both a demonic creation and three-ring circus of one. Ledger died in January at the age of 28 from an accidental overdose, after the principal photography of the film had concluded. His death could have cast a paralyzing pall over the movie if his performance were not so alive. Ledger's Joker is a creature of such ghastly life, and his performance is so visceral, creepy and insistently present that the portrayal pulls you in almost at once.

Ledger's performance is so intense and lasting in part because, despite his insane mask, it's a subtle and nuanced performance that is so powerful it almost erases all memories of the handsome Australian actor behind the Joker's mask. The makeup seems to have liberated Ledger. Ledger's body movements are flexibly agile, he's expressive with only his eyes and his voice has oscillating surges of irony, mockery and psychopathology. Ledger's performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight is an essay, in a way that he's never shown before when playing straight-faced characters, in pure magnetic charisma.

While Hollywood's Academy Awards are still more than six months away, the late Heath Ledger already is being touted for a supporting actor nomination for his terrifying performance in The Dark Knight. Ledger's performance is so mesmerizing and daring as Batman's clown-faced arch enemy that it's possible he might become the first performer since Peter Finch (in the 1976 Network) to receive a posthumous Oscar.

The Nobel Prize, The Pulitzer Prize, The Oscar. Sure they're all pretty great, but to me the ultimate success involves one of two things, either...

1) Appearing on Oprah

or

2) Appearing on Sesame Street

Anyone can accomplish those other things if you just work hard enough, but you have to be really special and unique to be on Oprah or Sesame Street.

And here, to prove my point is Feist on Sesame Street. How can you deny that that's the coolest?

As you would have noticed the badge I've proudly displayed on my right hand side as a Tastefully Driven Author...=))

There are altogether 14 authors; including the 4 owners - Greg, George, Adam and Mike.

I'm doing posts on topics of Fashion as well as Technology.

Today is my first post on Tastefully Driven!

taste·ful·ly driv·en - to desire, appreciate, and enjoy high quality products, services, places, and experiences that improve your life and the life of those around you

It's about thumb drives - and how you could get really tastefully-designed ones for yourself!

Throw those gaudy looking ones you have!

Read more after the jump here!

This post came slightly late as I was out late...and watched Batman: The Dark Knight!

It's so worth watching even if you are not a Batman fan due to Heath Ledger's amazing portrayal of the Joker.

It just kept me glued onto the screen even though the movie was shown till near 3am (yes AM).

Heath Ledger and Conway Wickliffe (a 41-year-old special effects technician, died last September while working on a stunt for the film in London) receive special posthumous tributes at the end of the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight".

A wave of sadness rushed over remembering how Heath left us so early.

There were also rounding applauses from the audience once the show came to an end.

It was altogether a very well put together movie.

I expect Heath to be winning some Oscar this year!

The Dark Knight has received plenty of attention thanks to the truly unfortunate passing of Heath Ledger and now backed by numerous positive reviews, the movie is poised to break this year’s box office record. Possibly the most anticipated film of the year, monstrous crowds are expected to hit the theatres this weekend.

Opening Friday, Dark Knight reunites actor Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan. Ledger stars as the young version of the Joker. Early reports indicate that Ledger may be on the fast-track to winning an Oscar for his performance.

The movie is being shown on a record 9,200 movie screens in the U.S. and Canada, pushing Dark Knight past the previous record holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End by a small margin. Early estimates suggest that the movie will crush the $100 million mark this weekend. It needs to gross another $151.2 million to top the original Batman as the biggest blockbuster of the series.

The biggest opening goes to Spiderman 3 with $151.1 million.

Let me start off by saying I don’t mind action flicks, but I usually do not make it a priority

Let me start off by saying I don't mind action flicks, but I usually do not make it a priority in terms of movies I'm going to see in the theatre. I've loved Batman, since I was a kid watching re-runs of Adam West. I don't read comic books. This movie has intrigued me since I saw the first trailer.

I spent two+ hours this afternoon watching The Dark Knight. Wow. That's all I can say...it totally kicked ass, and I highly recommend you go see it.

There has been a lot of talk about an Oscar nomination for Heath Ledger. I've seen Brokeback Mountain, his performance in The Dark Knight dwarfs his performance in Brokeback Mountain. My only fear is the Academy will not be able to see past its based on a comic book and it's an action movie. That would be a real shame. If he's nominated, I might actually tune in to watch. (Dependent upon who's playing that night.)

Some advice if your planning on seeing The Dark Knight -

LEAVE YOUR KIDS AT HOME. I can not tell you how many young children I saw in the theatre. This is NOT a family movie. Get a babysitter...I'm serious.

Get there early unless you don't want to sit with your friends, then arrive anytime.

Typisch amerikanisch, möchte man meinen.

Ich bin wirklich gespannt, ob The Dark Knight hält, was er momentan verspricht!!!

Apparently, rabbits do two kinds of poo - a tasty edible version and a not-so-tasty and not-so-edible version. Except the first one isn't really poo. The food is digested twice. After the first stage, the result is a caecotroph. It's still full of goodness. The rabbit eats this and it goes through the second stage of digestion. All well and good. Except it looks a bit gross watching them munch their way through something that just came out of the rear end.

Even more so in the case of Archie. He appears to be slightly incontinent right now. This might pass. Some bunnies pee all over the place for a while after being neutered. Although Archie is a fairly old bunny, he's only just been neutered. We're really really hoping that it stops within a couple of week or so.

This picture was taken when I was feeling more than a little frustrated. Goodold Archie jumped on to the chair, frightening the life out of Moses who had been curled up snug on the cushion. He sat for a few seconds, peed, pood then sat in his own wee and began to eat his poo. Close up photo here. Pretty gross really.

Good job he's got such a fantastic nature. He really is lovely. He's quite like Oscar used to was.

Symptom #11 - People Who Watch Parody Movies

1) Scary Movie

2) Scary Movie 2

3) Scary Movie 3

4) Not Another Teen Movie

5) Walk Hard

6) Epic Movie

7) Meet the Spartans

8-1,000,000) Other Assorted Anathema to Film

If you watch these movies voluntarily, you are probably a dipshit. If you enjoy them, you are in fact a dipshit. Understand that these movies are the shit beneath the hoof of the donkey that is popular film. This week, I went to see a movie and was graced with a poster for "Disaster Movie." There hasn't even been a disaster movie to parody in something like five years. When I say disaster movie, I mean things such as "Twister," "Armageddon," and the like. I don't mean "Battlefield Earth," or "The Passion of the Christ."

Why are you a dipshit for liking these movies? If you've noticed, these "parodies," are not actually parodies. They are simply the parodied movie with a handful of dick and fart jokes thrown in. Movies that get parodied these days don't actually need parodies. They are amply ridiculous as they stand. The only social commentary that I can draw from said parodies is the fact that they often gross the same amount as their blockbuster counterparts, and are using budgets less than a tenth as large and using actors that have either not been heard of, or have no current relevance. The movie industry gets one over on us by replacing high-paid 20 year old women with Carmen Electra. Oscar-winning actors can be replaced with Vern Troyer. And you know what? You'll still buy it. Not only will you buy it, but you'll buy the original as well.

So what does this make the Parody Movie? It's like the reach-around during anal. Yes, you could just take it in the ass, but you're paying good money to be nailed. Why not pay the premium and get a little yank?

What I want to see is a film called Parody Movie. Essentially, it would be a RE-recycling of shitty Hollywood plots. You take the parody, and you re-record it frame by frame with an even lower-paid cast. Look hard, Hollywood. You'll find someone who can work for less than Carrot Top. In fact, you could use the homeless. I'm almost certain with a 100$ budget and a trip downtown, I could cast a film with better acting than 100 Carmen Electras. A writing staff isn't necessary, as we would simply steal from the originals and add in jokes taken from Beavis and Butthead reruns. With the cost of the camera, cast, editing, I could probably record for under 1,000$. I'd pay a lawyer 90,000$ to remain on retainer in case of potential copyright issues. I would reserve 100,000$ to compensate for my own genius. If we only grossed 5,000,000$, which is nothing for modern films, we would still be netting 4,809,000$. That's remarkable, when many films don't net a single red cent before merchandising and DVD licensing.

How do you deal with this breed of dipshit? As per the norm, you can usually ignore them. However, if you need to deal with them, your best bet is to offer them 10$ to be in your newest film.

Paul Newman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors to ever appear on film. He has never put in a bad performance (but that's not to say all of the films he has been in have deserved his presence). Personal favourites of mine are The Verdict where his performance as the washed up ambulance-chaser was surely the one he deserved the Oscar for, Absence of Malice with it's brilliant finale and Nobody's Fool which is just a great humanist performance. None of these are amongst his best known films and they are all examples of the mature actor. His earlier, more testosterone charged performances, in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Hud were also brilliant. Newman is a great humanitarian and his generous efforts for charity are second to none. To me he encapsulates everything that is good about America. So I was very sad to hear of his illness recently and I for one wish him a speedy recovery.
