O mapa acede-se clicando no botão Map, com o botão esquerdo do mouse, ou na barra inferior. Com o mapa podem:

- Pesquisar ilhas ou regiões. Ouviram da ilha de Portucalis, mas não sabem o landmark? Experimentem fazer "Search" a *Portucalis no mapa global. Aparece Portucalis e podem ver a distruibuição e terrenos, além de outras informações úteis. No entanto, atenção que só procura ilhas e regiões, não procura nomes de terrenos que lá estejam dentro.

Neste mapa global, existem várias simbologias:

- Vocês estão assinalados pelo círculo amarelo;
- Os pontos verdes indicam outras pessoas. V verdes a apontar para cima ou para baixo, significa que uma pessoa está acima ou abaixo.
- Este mapa não gira, mas podem arrastá-lo com o rato, e fazer zoom in ou zoom out para aumentar ou diminuir o pormenor.
- Outros símbolos importantes são as estrelas de cor lilás, que marcam eventos especiais a decorrer nesse local; e zonas a amarelo indicam terreno à venda. Podem seleccionar aquilo que querem ver (ou simplificar o mapa).

O mapa também serve para ver quantos avatares estão numa determinada região. Como? Abrindo o mapa, e sobre a região/ pontinhos verdes, demorar um bocadinho com o rato parado.

O Mini-Mapa, no canto superior direito da tela, mostra uma vista em planta das imediações. Você é o ponto branco/amarelo no centro. Os pontos verdes são outras pessoas. O Mini-Mapa gira para apontar para a mesma direção em que você está. Pode ser activado com Ctrl-Shift-M.

E a a maneira mais fácil de encontrarem algo no Second life é usando o Search.

Procurem a palavra Search/Pesquisa na barra inferior, ou na superior noutras versões. Ao clicar lá, aparece uma caixa com vários tipos de procura que podem fazer:
- All: pesquisa em tudo;
- Anúncios/Classifieds: procura anúncios pagos/classificados;
- Eventos: procura eventos agendados através do site secondlife.com;
- Lugares populares: lista o top de locais mais populares (com maior tráfego)
- Venda de terrenos/Land: Fornece as indicações sobre quais os terrenos à venda;
- Lugares/Places: Pesquisar landmarks de locais;
- Pessoas: Procura exclusivamente a palavra no perfil de residentes;
- Pessoas: Procura exclusivamente a palavra nos Grupos.

Um pequeno teste:
procurem por um grupo chamado "basket weavers" ... e vejam quantos elementos tem.

Sparkle in Second Life

The blog stats on this blog prompted me to create the website because so many search terms seemed to point to people desperately looking for a way off Orientation Island in particular. Second Life is a complicated place and the process of registering, logging in and then negotiating the tutorials on Orientation Island seems to be defeating many folk who give up in disgust and don't bother to try again. So much for Linden Labs' claim of several million residents .... how many are regularly active inworld, I wonder?

Anyway, I uploaded Sparkle's Guide today and posted it on the Second Life forums. Now I'm posting it here in the hope that people who NEED this guide will be able to visit and find out how to escape from the maze that is Orientation Island.

These somewhat pessimistic thoughts are provoked by the discovery that Benja Kepler and the excellent video tutorial blog he/she was keeping on Wordpress has vanished into thin air. The blog has been deleted and the video "How to leave Orientation Island" seems to have been removed from YouTube. According to the 'Snap' preview, the last entry on the blog was over 31 weeks ago. There is a brief cut-off snippet in the 'Snap' preview window about removing the vidtuts because they might be now, or become in the future, rather confusing.

However, with a little diligent searching, I managed to find Benja's YouTube Video Index:

and clicked on the "How to Leave Orientation Island" ... to find that the link still works. The video came up for me. Anyone else care to try it out and see if it works for you too?

There's that mutability issue again, isn't it? Second Life is changing all the time in response to its citizens needs (or their needs as perceived by the Second Life management) and things become out-of-date.

Well, I decided the only way to really try was to dive in... I created my avatar and got started. My first experience was unnerving to say the least. I had all these people around me and I felt exposed. Would they start talking to me? No! I wasn't ready? And, weren't they getting kind of close? I need my space! I logged off shortly after that.

But, I was determined to try again, especially after my classmate, Jenny, wrote about her successful partying on St. Patrick's Day! I wanted to experience that same fun... but I got stuck on the Orientation Island. Yes, I never quite figured how to get off my little place of orientation. I ran into a SL avatar from London, which was cool, on this second go-round. Unfortunately, I wasn't much help to her. We tried to figure out things together for a little bit, but she ultimately gave up partnering with me.

I resorted to logging onto the Second Life support website repeatedly to try and figure out the answers to my questions, but it didn't help. I just wanted to know how to get in one of those cars around the island and drive. Then, my avatar froze up and I just wanted to learn how to get moving again. No answers on the support site, so I logged off.

I think what bothers me most of all is that SL is not easy to figure out. There are chats, menus, and different keys that control your movements. Maybe for me there are too many choices. I just want something simple-to-understand. Don't worry, I will try again and maybe third time will be a charm... but, if a non-computer person like me finds SL intimidating and hard-to-use, how will SL ever catch on in the mainstream? It won't.

Today at Benjamin Linden's Office hour (4PM SLT to 5PM SLT) we were talking about the User Experience and the UI at Orientation Islands, and how to make it better! James Linden guided us through, and we brainstormed oh did we brainstorm and came up with many brilliant ideas, and  one of those great Ideas, from none other than Malbers Linden was that we make a Group, for all of those Interested in User Experience and contributing, and then from that came the idea for a Blog and so here it is, the Group has also been made InWorld called "User Experience"

Nota: Talvez com esta limitação de “encontros e ajudar”, talvez seja de investir em mais informação, nem que seja escrita, em português. Afinal (já para não falar dos brasileiros) somos uma das comunidades com maior crescimento no SL.   E aqui ficam as fotos a comprovar que nas Orientation existem: painéis com línguas em alemão, francês e duas asiáticas… Mentores e pessoas “estranhas” ;)

 Pois bem...a parte mais básica desta lição consiste em OUVIR uma IM...e perceberem quando existe alguém a quererem falar convosco. Geralmente uma nova IM vem acompanhada dum som sonoro. E através da abertura do histórico de comunicações (ver Ilha da Comunicação) que conseguem ver todas as IMs em que estão a conversar.... E as IMs não respondidas, estão a "piscar"...   

(Parêntesis):  Mas afinal o que é uma IM?As IM (Instant Messages) são modos de comunicar em privado ou à distância com determinados grupos ou pessoas, independentemente das pessoas se encontrarem sentados ao vosso lado, ou numa outra região a milhares de quilómetros de distância… São aquilo que existe em todos os programas de chat: uma “conversação” privada.   Através de History conseguem aceder a todos os históricos de conversações que estão envolvidos: O Chat geral (onde têm falado até agora) e os IMs.

Quando falam (ou gritam) no Chat geral ouvem todas as pessoas que se encontram nas proximidades. Em IMs, tanto podem estar a falar em privado com o vosso amigo do lado no meio dum concerto “à pinha”, como podem estar a falar com ele durante uma aula que estejam a ter, e ele a trabalhar algures noutro lado da rede ;)…  Para falarem em IM, têm de procurar as pessoas ou os grupos com querem falar.  

Existem vários modos:

- Se estiverem a ver a pessoa, basta clicar nela com o botão direito… e quando vêem um menu tipo queijo, escolher Send IM… (Sem dúvida o modo mais fácil, e que podem praticar na Orientation)…  

- Se quiserem adicionar essa pessoa como amigo, nesse menu podem escolher “Add friend”. Ao avatar em questão vai surgir uma caixinha para responderem se te querem adicionar como amigo. Os teus amigos todos (assim como todos os grupos nos quais estão inscritos) encontram-se listados …e sempre que quiserem falar com algum amigo, basta clicarem em Communicate, e respectivamente escolher a tab Friends ou a tab Groups, e seleccionar qual o amigo ou grupo com quem querem falar, e clicar em Send IM.

- Se não estiverem a ver a pessoa, têm de procurar o seu perfil para que possam falar com eles. Para tal, têm o usar o Search. Mas isso vamos aprender noutro dia…  

Nota: os IMs de grupo possuem várias “finalidades”. A existência de grupos no Second Life vai ser alvo doutra lição. No que diz respeito às IMs, é possível enviar uma IM para todos os elementos dum grupo que estão online (ver acima). No entanto, NEM SEMPRE isso se DEVE fazer.

Muitos grupos são criados para fins comerciais, divulgações de eventos, anúncios, etc., e compete ao “dono” do grupo definir as suas regras, ou seja, se permite ou não utilizar o IM para conversar ou chat… Isto porque um IM de “grupo” pode ser usado como chat entre as várias pessoas, estando elas também separadas em vários pontos da rede! Assim devem ler bem a info do grupo antes de enviar um IM.  

Nota: Alguns grupos onde o IM costuma ser usado como chat: Tagus (o grupo da Afrodite, a minha madrinha); Portugal Group (com mais membros, do pessoal de Lisboa) e Comunidade Portuguesa SL.

Depois de saber andar, voar e até vestir no Second Life, podes aprender a comunicar.

Bem…na verdade há quem faça tudo isso ao mesmo tempo…até mesmo sem sair da praça principal. Mas vamos novamente seguir o tutorial, para garantir que não escapa nada.

No início, pedem-lhes para abrir o interface chat e escrever algum texto. Pode ser, por ex.: “Olá”. 

Esse é o modo essencial de comunicação no Second Life, e que vais utilizar para comunicar com todos os que estão no mesmo local.  

Seguindo pelo caminho dos tutoriais, acabam por conhecer o ChatMaster Phatt. É um Deus gorducho, que vos vai pedir para dizer no Chat geral o vosso nome. Podem encontrar a janela do chat no canto inferior esquerdo…. Aí coloquem o vosso nome e clicar em Say. (Se fizerem Shout, vão gritar o vosso nome, e fazer com que vos oiçam não só quem está na proximidade como pessoal que estejam mais afastados…)

Phatt fala depressa... Será que perceberam a resposta dele? Fala duma profecia, mas chega a dizer qual é, apenas onde se encontra. Mas se continuarem em frente vão encontrar mais ajudas…

Como assim?

- Eventos que ocorrem simultaneamente em ambos os mundos (festas, conferências, etc...)

- Live music (concertos ao vivo) com pessoas que podem se encontrar no outro canto do Planeta Terra ;)

Já para não falar das relações que se fazem entre amigos.... e não avatares ;). Mas isso já é tema para outros blogs... que não este :)! 

Por isso, se fores ou sonhares em ser músico, DJ, pintor, artista, não hesites em te inscrever! O Second Life é uma das melhores formas de promover o teu trabalho por todo o mundo, e existem milhentas pessoas dispostas a ajudar-te a começar!

Na verdade fiquei um pouco decepcionada com a viagem. Não foi assim tão difícil de achá-lo… mas ou me enganei ou não achei nada “de jeito” … a não ser mais um dos placards com filmes.

Olha, vamos aproveitar para explicar como podes ver filmes neste mundo.

 Primeiro, tens de ter o Quicktime instalado. Se não tiverem esse programa, clicando no Placard surge um link que vos redirecciona para a página por onde podem instalar a versão grátis do Quicktime.

Quando tiverem o Quicktime instalado, vai surgir uma mensagem a perguntar se querem visualizar o streaming de video sempre que esteja disponível. Podem então carregar no Play Media, 

Sempre que precisarem de activar essa opção, assim como a opção de ouvir música, podem ir ao menu “Edit”, escolher Preferences, clicar na Tab Áudio e Vídeo, e seleccionar as caixas “Play vídeo when available” para vídeos, e “Play audio when available” (para música). Não se esqueçam que ouvir música consome mais largura de banda (e tráfego) e vídeo, mais ainda.

Finalmente, sempre que encontrarem numa land (terreno) um botão de Play, é só accioná-lo que passam a ouvir a música associada à mesma, e partilhada com todos os amigos que estejam no mesmo local J

E pronto…

Divirtam-se a ver o filme, e depois façam uma pose com o dragão!

Depois de nos sabermos mover no Second Life, convém saber como mudar de roupa. OK, não só mudar de roupa, mas de olhos, cabelos, forma do corpo, pele, acessórios... Ou seja, tudo aquilo que possa construir o teu avatar.

Isso passa por saber o que é o Inventário.  No site do Second Life Brasil têm uma óptima descrição do que é o inventário, da sua organização por pastas e da diferença entre Inventário (tudo aquilo que adquires) e a Library todo o material que os LL te "oferecem" com a conta .

Se seguires o tutorial do Castelo da Aparência, uma das primeiras coisas a fazer é procurar uma tocha (torch) no teu inventário. Fazes "wear" (vestir) e ela ilumina-te o resto do caminho :)...

Compras

Seguindo viagem... uma das maneiras mais fáceis de mudar de roupa é comprando material feito pelos outros residentes. Isso implica na maioria dos casos usar a moeda local (L$ - linden dólares ) mas na verdade ao contrário da vida real, é possível viver no Second Life, sem um tostão, tantos são os "freebies" que existem por lá. :D

Para comprares algo no SL, tens de tocar no objecto ou numa caixa que tenhas o que queres comprar. Neste caso, clicando na foto, recebes no inventário um item chamado "Chainman shirt".  Noutro tipo de vendedores (vendors) tens de clicar com o botão do rato, e escolher Pagar (Pay) no menu. Mesmo que acabes por pagar 0 L$. Depois aparece-te uma notificação no canto superior direito, que pergunta se queres manter ou não o item adquirido... Se disseres sim ele vai parar ao inventário. Acabaste de fazer a tua primeira compra, e a camisa foi ter ao teu inventário. Para a vestir, procura na pasta Clothing (roupas) e faz duplo clique.

No ínicio não vais ter Linden (dinheiro) para comprar coisas. Mas enquanto não o ganhas (isso já é para outra lição) ou não o compras (podes sempre comprar dinheiro aos LL por cartão de crédito ou paypal)  diverte-te com as inúmeras coisas free que existem.

Podes mudar a forma do corpo sempre que quiseres. Neste local, podes até escolher entre diversas formas de corpo. Basta clicar na respectiva imagem que a forma é transferida para o teu inventário.

Depois de comprares um item, e quando o quiseres usar, tens sempre de abrir o inventário. No caso desta shape (forma) tens de abrir a pasta das Body parts. Lá dentro vais encontrar essa nova shape, juntamente com a tua antiga forma (shape). Agora só tens de vesti-la (Wear). Aproveita para experimentar vestir uma e outra  e ver as diferenças entre as duas.

Outro modo de mudar a aparência é através do editar aparência.

Dentro deste editor podes alterar centenas de características, para que o teu avatar esteja complemente personalizado, desde a ponta do nariz às mangas da tua camisa.

Clica com o botão direito do rato no teu avatar e escolhe "editar aparência" do menu que aparece. Isso irá abrir o editor de aparência, uma ferramenta básica no SL.   

E bem.. para finalizar o dia (e o tutorial) ... depois de mais "arranjadinhos"...

E aprendem a enviar um postal directamente do Second Life para todos os amigos! É só sentar na cadeirinha para receber as instruções!

Para enviar uma foto como postal, depois de abrirem a ferramenta snapshot, escolhem a "send a postcard"... depois têm de preencher mail, descrição e email dos destinatários. Ao fazer send,  estão a enviar a foto para os vossos amigos!

Depois da foto tirada é só fazer stand up para sair da cadeira :)

No final... ainda podem ir procurar o dragão. Mas isso fica para outro dia. Boa aventura!

Quando nasces no Second Life, vais parar a à Orientation Island. Podes optar por ir parar directamente ao mundo, mas a não ser que já estejas habituado ao SL, percorrer a cidade é indispensável. E para garantir que nada "te escapa" o melhor é percorrer mesmo os tutoriais, por muito chatos que pareçam!

Comecei pela Move Island. A cidade é feia, cheia de prédios altos, esgotos, ratazanas... Mas é ali que tens o Flight Institute que ensina a voar, a conduzir. Bem. Se fores como eu... não atinas com as setas de direcção e vais contra paredes e portões mas enfim... ninguém é perfeito.

Aqui fica registado a minha presença na Move City e os dois amigos que acabei por lá fazer: o Sérgio e o César :).

 Controlos de câmera. O essencial... é bom saber que logo no inicío explicam algo que a minha madrinha demorou meses a aprender ;)! Olha a minha sorte, ha?

  À porta do Flight institute. Não é que seja dificil aprender a voar... mas sempre ajuda no controle das setas.

Já disse que detesto conduzir?? Ainda sou pior no SL do que na RL!!

The welsh couple told me about places where I could get stuff for free in able to change my appearence. One of this places was The Freebie Warehouse - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Burns/92/146/79 A place with lots and lots of boxes of free stuff.

At this point I also discovered Second Sweden. Right now the largest Swedish community in Second Life. This was in March 2007 and by then Second Sweden wasn't the large and active place it is now. By then it was a lot of empty red wooden cabins with white corners. A meeting place with a dance floor, a mid-summer flag pole, a replica of a traditional wooden horse and a fire place with a four to five avatars chatting. It was nice at first but I got bored of it fast.

So I went exploring. Every avatar has a Profile and in their profile they can list their favorite places and by checking out other avatars profiles I found my way to famous places in Second Life like The Lost Gardens of Apollo, Svarga, Dublin in SL and Wizards Alley (A Harry Potter themed sim).

I landed in Second Life looking like this. And the first place I arrived to was the Orientation Island Sim. The different places in Second Life are called sims = simulator. On the Orientation Island you were offered to learn to walk, fly, and some other important features necessary to play the game. This was a good thing for me. Not having basic knowledge on how to walk and move around in a game environment. I kept walking in to things and getting stuck. At this time Orientation Island had five or six different stations and that you could go through and when you completed the tasks you got to go to the next station. Later I have lerned that you don't have to go through these steps in order to enter other places in Second Life. You can just teleport yourself anywhere and start playing. I think I got trough tree of the stations before I got tired of it and logged off. Then it took a week before I entered this world again, now more determined to learn how to play. I hadn't discover the Search function yet so I went to the World Map and tried to get to places where there was a lot of people. Of course I ended up at a "sex-place". A place where Second Life avatars can have sex. The software kept crashing and I just didn't find it fun. On the third log in I started to search for places in the search field on the World Map. I searched for places like Sweden, Ireland and Scotland, since I'd heard that there was replicas of real places in Second Life.

When walking around in Second Life everything worked very slow and my the software (game) kept crashing. My Dell Inspiron 6000 didn't work as well for Second Life as it had for The Sims 2. I had to do a major hard-drive clean up and delete a lot of programs that took up space to make my computer work faster.

SL NameWatch

"SLNameWatch.com is a database of the last names available for selection inside Second Life®, the 3D Metaverse created and maintained by Linden Lab®. Both currently available last names as well as "retired" last names are available. Statistics are collected on the usage of the names. There is an announcement list whose members will receive an e-mail notice every time Linden Lab adds new names available to new Second Life accounts"

There, on page 8 of the 'Retired names' database, I discovered that I am one of 32416 Snooks!!!!! On that page, the only name that exceeded our total was Slade with 48323. You can sort the database by 'active names only' (four pages), 'retired names' (47 pages) or all surnames. If you go to 'retired' and click 'Usage count' you will discover that the most-used name in Second Life is Allen with a staggering 151402 residents! Second placed Oh is a long way behind with only 96971 residents.

Since I am a Furry, I decided that having a human 'alt' (alternate) avatar would probably be a sensible thing to do so I went through the list looking for surnames that appealed to me. There were quite a few :) In the end, I selected a name which appealed to the pagan side of me and headed off for the Second Life Registration page (bear in mind that I use Firefox as my browser so I can't guarantee that everything I say from here on will apply to Internet Explorer or any other browser)

On arrival, I found that things were different since I registered as Elfrida Snook on June 24th. Now, instead of having one single option - Orientation Island - there are many other options to choose from including Second Life Voice Beta, Anshe Chung's Dreamland, Sl Netherlands, Second House of Sweden, Azure Islands, BigPond, STA Travel, Pontiac Motorati, Ben & Jerry's, NBA, Mainland Brasil and The L Word. I thought Azure Islands sounded fun and interesting :) Of course, you can still choose Orientation Island if you wish!

Unfortunately the Azure islands registration page returned an error message with no explanation of what had gone wrong apart from suggesting that the name I wanted to use might already have been taken. So I tried three variants and got the error message each time.

In frustration, I returned to the main SL registration page and, to my amazement, managed to register my chosen name without any problem (the 'Check this name' option on the SL page is very useful because it let's you know why your registration has stalled) So I registered my chosen name, selected the City Chic female avatar from the rather uninspiring selection of six on offer and validated it by responding to the email from SL.

But it was a pity because I wanted to try out the new 'Welcome Areas' option that is now offered to new residents :( Maybe once I've escaped from the prison that is Orientation Island, I'll make my own way to the Azure Islands and check out the Welcome Island which was promised in their registration page ..... in the meantime I'm checking out their website Azure Islands ...
