¿Problemas? Cada uno de su padre y de su madre… A mí me gusta OpenOffice y siempre trabajo c

¿Problemas?

¡Ale! ¡a convertir!.

Spending the better part of the day yesterday decompressing — giving Ken a ride to the airport

Spending the better part of the day yesterday decompressing -- giving Ken a ride to the airport was a good outing -- I actually got back to work today toward next Saturday's event. To my surprise, I found that the Felton Presbyterian Church does have wireless, and that we can pick it up for the next event on July 26, so that's a good sign.

I had a chance to speak at the tail end of The Linux Link Tech Show to give a brief report about the two events to date. And if I sound a little exuberant, it's because I am. The project has gone better than my expectations, and there's a good argument that we won't have to do the "Microsoft-free for a week" because so many people have already converted to GNU/Linux that we can monitor their progress, find what works for them, what doesn't work for them, and they don't have to go back at the end of a week.

It's something to discuss, anyway.

Christian Einfeldt also started putting video together. If you want to see an example of Ken and me in action, you can go here for essentially a not-ready-for-prime-time version (only because it's raw footage, as the Digital Tipping Point provides, and it can be used by anyone -- yep, that's open-source video for you). Ken is on the right, I'm on the left (and that's by design). There will be more of this, and needless to say, we're going to be putting this together in a video form that will be shown to the general public. As for the events themselves, they will be up as soon as Christian can get an edited version up.

We've been discussing other things as well: It came up last night on the radio that tech help can come from anywhere with the proper equipment -- an IRC channel, a forum, a mailing list, etc. The guys at The Linux Link Tech Show have offered their help, as well as some time in a few weeks to have some of the Felton residents who have converted on the show.

Those items are all on at the top of the list, hopefully in place by the next event.

90 and sunny, becoming cooler as the evening approaches.

What was rolling on the San Lorenzo River on Tuesday was videotape — Christian Einfeldt shot a

What was rolling on the San Lorenzo River on Tuesday was videotape -- Christian Einfeldt shot a few miles of video of Ken and me and Felton, taking up a better part of the day until the evening event. I no longer envy those who make their living on either side of the camera -- it's a lot of hard work.

Despite the numbers not being high on Tuesday night, the momentum continues and can be gauged in ways that may not be thought of as conventional. For example, one of the most astounding phenomena I've ever encountered is that people are coming in with their hardware -- and this happened on Tuesday as well -- and essentially saying "I've had enough of Windows -- give me Linux." These folks don't want to try it out first; they're so angry at Microsoft that they're looking for alternatives.

One fellow wanted to buy a Zareason box -- Zareason was on hand on Sunday, but they were not around on Tuesday. Christian was able to call Zareason and hand the man his phone, and hopefully he went home with a Zareason computer.

Today, Ken and I had a chance to finally sit down and talk about what worked on these first two days and what didn't. Meanwhile, interest has been raised on the project in a way that people are starting to say, "Hey, I can do this in my community," and suburban Portland, Ore., may be next on this continent to take up the Lindependence project.

Stay tuned. There's another meeting scheduled for a week from Saturday -- that would be July 26, and it coincides with a big celebration of the town buying back its waterworks from a multinational corporation (the dinner and dance is in the evening; the meeting/installfest is in the afternoon).

- "Oddio, vado a prendere ClamAV!"

W: Errore GPG: http://packages.medibuntu.org hardy Release:

No, dai, sto esagerando.

ATTENZIONE! Questi consigli vanno presi come tali. Ripeto: take it easy :)

Alla prossima.

-------------------

4= alternativa a presentaciones:

Koffice: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/KOffice

Gonme Office: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME-DB

Comparacion entre koffice, openoffice y gnome-office: http://doc.ubuntu-es.org/Ofimatica

Lotus synphony: http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.jspa

No i zamknięty.

Trwało to wieczność.

Pobierz OpenOffice: http://download.openoffice.org/3.0beta/

Ulepszoną funkcjonalność arkusza kalkulacyjnego i dodaną opcję "solver"

wsparcie dla 1024 kolumn arkusza kalkulacyjnego

Wsparcie dla otwartego formatu ".odf"

Wsparcie dla formatów MS Office; ".docx", ".Xlsx" czy ".Pptx"

Ponadto:

nowe narzędzie do zarządzania informacjami osobistymi (PIM)

rozbudowany mechanizm zarządzania rozszerzeniami

import/eksport dokumentów PDF

wsparcie technologi Web 2.0 (obsługa blogów, wiki etc.)

obsługa wielu ekranów przez moduł Impress

Now that I've had a chance to rejoin the living after what has been my busiest day since my daughter's birth (and that, in and of itself, was a pretty busy day, not to mention slightly more significant than Sunday), I'd like to first apologize for not being able to give folks an update during the first Lindependence event -- either on IRC nor on this blog -- and secondly offer a couple (a few, or maybe several) observations about the day.

This project has left the station and is on the move.

First things first: The first event was a success, and a telling sign about the way the day would go started before the event opened. There were people waiting when Ken Starks, Grant Bowman (who represented Ubuntu), 10-year-old Linux chick Mirano Cafiero (daughter of yours truly) and I made it over to Taylor Hall at Felton Presbyterian Church, with Christian Einfeldt following us with a running video camera. That was about 2:15 -- 45 minutes before the event was to start.

Another telling sign of the event's eventual success had to do with the first person who asked for assistance. Takash Yogi, who brought his laptop, didn't want a Live CD to take home, and didn't want to dual boot with Windows. Takashi wanted to do a full install, and he went home with Ubuntu on his laptop.

People get ready, there's a train a-comin'
You don't need no baggage, you just get on board

The gurus and greybeards were at the ready and were incredibly helpful. The greybeards and gurus brought about a century of GNU/Linux and FOSS experience into the hall, and they were incredibly helpful to those whose Linux experience could only be measured in minutes and hours.

Academia was well represented: Jim Griffin, the best of a fine group of instructors at Cabrillo College, was there, as well as OpenOffice.org's David Eisenberg, from Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. David not only helped with OOo, but also did double duty, helping out with some Linux installs on the side (as well as bringing the treats).

Youth was served as well. Guru Kai Tamkun, who turns 12 on Friday, coded in Perl when not demonstrating Mandriva, his distro of choice. Brothers Aric and Adam Rufle, who came to Felton with their father Steve Rufle, also pitched in, both digitally as well as impromptu roadies. Mirano Cafiero made her own video of the event, and gave the tape to Christian to put on the Digital Tipping Point.

Speaking of Steve Rufle (to whom I have to apologize for introducing him all weekend as "Steve Ruffle" when his surname is actually pronounced "roo-fle"), the FOSS movement is a better place thanks to his artesian depth of advocacy, and while he had brought his Open Animals up from Phoenix, he was pressed into service as a "greybeard" helping those who had questions or who were doing installs.

People get ready, there's a train to Jordan
Picking up passengers coast to coast

The nuts and bolts: We didn't take a head count. We probably should have, but we were all working on getting people into the world we already know, so we bypassed that minor detail. But from our estimation, we probably had 100 people come in between 3 and 7 p.m., most of them coming early in the event. It may have been little more, possibly a little less, but somewhere in that area.

The amazing part was the number of people who went home with machines running GNU/Linux and GNU/Linux only. A sea of Live CDs went out the door as well, however it was those who came and had enough of Windows that awed most of us.

All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin'
You don't need no ticket . . .

There's another event tomorrow. One is scheduled for July 26 in the afternoon, before the town's big celebration they're holding after buying their waterworks, and the other may be earlier in the week, probably Tuesday or Wednesday. As always, more will follow.

I previously used Zoho Writer for collaboration in writing some academic paper. The feature that I loved most is that we can write mathematical expression using latex. But the collaborative tool is very limited. So I decided to use OpenOffice. I found an extension that enable me to write math expression in Latex.

It's called OOoLatex!

Since I am using Kubuntu, I followed the step in this thread, and it installs successfully.

This blog isn't going to be anything special because, as Ken will attest to on his blog (and I don't know how he does it), I'm kind of running around like the proverbial headless chicken.

But I will be posting when I can:

1:03 (T-minus two hours): Been fielding calls all morning, some from Felton, some not. Can they bring in their Kubuntu machine to be fixed (yes), what time is the event (3-7 p.m.), is there admission? (no). I still keep thinking I'm forgetting something.

9:28 p.m. -- My deepest apologies. This is the absolute earliest I've been able to get on line, eight hours after I wrote last.

Before I pass out, I wanted to say that I believe that today was a success. Ken Starks, a.k.a. "Helios," has pictures to come on his blog, I don't know how many people actually showed up, but when we opened at 3, things were hopping.

Part of my job as the host was to make sure things went smoothly. Hence with the technical part being in good hands -- even though we were unable to report from the floor of the hall (something we'll work on for Tuesday), there were enough "greyberds and gurus" around to make my job as digital concierge a little more bearable.

The first guy who came in -- Takashi -- left with Ubuntu, not with a LiveCD, but with Ubuntu installed on his laptop. Solely Ubuntu.. A few others followed suit; Not dual-boot, not running solely on Live CDs. These were folks who were just plain tired of Windows and wanted a change.

The maelstrom of activity during the course of the afternoon didn't stop for four straight hours. People coming in with questions. People hearing that Linux "sucked" and they wanted to see for themselves, only to go away with an entirely different (and positive) perspective on Linux.

I will report more on this tomorrow. I would suggest reading Ken's blog above. As I mentioned, I am wiped out and falling forward against this machine.

As I said before, more to follow.

Ferramentas -> Opções -> BrOffice.Org (ou OpenOffice.org) -> Memória
E dentro desta janela habilitar o “Iniciador Rápido do OpenOffice”
Realmente funciona.

Tudo muito simples!

Now, this is fog.

On a foggy Friday morning, with a zillion things to do and having to go into work at the newspaper early, it's good to see that the weather is cooling off for this weekend.

Actually, I exaggerate when I say there are a zillion things to do -- maybe 10 to 15 this morning at the most -- but really there's not a lot to do from here on in. Fliers are out, the word is out, another blurb in the paper would be nice, and remotely possible. I wanted to get just one more letter out to people saying, essentially, "It's time," even if it's hand delivered, but that's unlikely at this point. We've done all we can do up to now and it's now time to get the show on the proverbial road.

Speaking of on-the-road, Stephen Rufle of Open Animals is on his way up from Phoenix. If you're reading this on Friday evening, Ken Starks, the highly esteemed Helios, is on a plane from Austin-to-Las Vegas-to San Francisco, with express orders not to stay in Vegas any longer than it takes to switch planes. Stephen and Ken will join a whole host of gurus and greybeards -- a group of locals who stepped up after reading an article in the paper, a contingent from Cabrillo College (go Seahawks) that includes someone I consider the guru-est of gurus, Cabrillo professor Jim Griffin, all the way to Kai Tamkun, the 11-year-old wunderkind who's going to show folks how easy Mandriva is to install and tweak.

[In all fairness, Kai's a little more advanced than your average 11-year-old, but he makes a good case that if kids can do it, so can you.]

We're on our way.

If you're interested in watching something I would like to have looping at the events (although I don't know how I'm going to swing it), there's the Red Hat "Truth Happens" video here, which I watch often -- to the point where my daughter asks me, "Dad, are you watching that again?"

Yep. And if it can sway me, I think it can sway others toward the inevitablility of truth happening.

64 -- that's more like it -- and foggy.

I am sitting here in the library studying and I just took a pause. Today I want to describe some programs which I use everyday and which are really good. This programs are about browsing, calendar, music listening, istant messanging, calls, office and dictionary. So, let's start.

Firefox 3: Well, I think many of you use Firefox, as it comes pre installed on Ubuntu. This new Firefox 3 has really improved from the former version. I expecially like the new address bar which seems to be kind of "intelligent", trying to recognize where you want to go while you type the address; Together with Firefox I use GMAIL notifier, a small add-on which keeps constantly controlled my e-mail address. You can find it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/173;

Rainlendar2: This program is a really nice desktop calendar. As I tend to forget a lot of stuff it's really useful for me to have this small application on the right side of my desktop. I use it really much: exams, things to do, birthdays, everything. Rainlendar2 comes with 2 skins. I don't like the default one, but the second one is... really nice! Rainlander2 has plenty of useful feauters. There are two version avaiable: the free one and the pro one, which costs some dollars. You can read more about this program on it's official website: http://www.rainlendar.net. I suggest you to have a loot to the FAQ section, really useful expecially for Linux users. The installation for Ubuntu users is really simple: you only have to download the *.DEB package, click on it, insert your admin password (sudo password) and install it. There is a version for Windows;

BMPX: I love it's simply, light and complete interface. This player lets you play your own music from your hard disk (library), listen to internat radios (shouthcast, icecast), listen to lastfm (if you don't know what it is I suggest you do discover it: http://www.last.fm), Podcasts, CDs and finally Jamendo, a really intresting music database on internet (http://www.jamendo.com). It is still in a quite early stage of the developement and it sometimes crashes (it happens to me when I listen for hours to lastfm) but I'm sure that if a lot of people will download and use this software the community will fix the bugs and provide new intresting and useful features. To get this software: http://bmpx.backtrace.info/site/BMPx_Homepage;

Pidgin: this IM (Istant Messaging) comes preinstalled (If I'm not wrong) with Ubuntu. If it doesn't you can install it via terminal typing sudo apt-get install pidgin. I love it because it easily lets me to use different accounts (Messenger, GMAIL, ICQ) at the same time. It's interface is really simple, so that this software is nothing for you if you love spectacular effects and complex interfaces. It still doesn't support audio/video call and this is really a pity. But for the rest is really nice. It functions without problems even behind proxy: it can use the system's (GNOME's) settings (System->Settings->Proxy). Website: http://www.pidgin.im;

Skype: not much to say about this software. I use it quite a lot, both for calling other computer and normal phones to good rates (expecially cheap if you have to call fix mobile numbers around the globe). As for Rainlenard2, you can install Skype downloading the *.DEB package from the official website. With this newer versions, Skype starts a good support of webcams. http://www.skype.com;

OpenOffice: it's simply a wonderfull application, containing a really powerful set of tools to handle many kind of documents (databases, written documents, excel files, presentation and much more). You simply have to try it out, as it comes preinstalled with Ubuntu. If you were used to Microsoft Office it will take you a while to understand how OpenOffice really works (there are some differences, of course) but after that you will love it. On the net there is a lot of material and tutorials teaching you everything you need. If you want, try to go on Youtube and type "OpenOffice" to get some tutorials! Website: http://www.openoffice.org;

Stardict: a really powerful dictionary on your desktop. It can both function with local and remote databases. I make it start automatically when the computer stars and if I don't know a word I just have to select it and click the WIN button (you can set this behavior in the options window). Stardict opens a small window telling me what the word means (of course, I installed some dictionaries on my computer). To check out more about this software visit: http://stardict.sourceforge.net/. There is even a version for Windows.

That's it, if you liked my description the best thing to do is to go and get the software and to try it out yourself! These are just opinions and you maybe like other software better than these ones! :)

Now, back to my studies.

Yesterday, while on IRC on #lindependence and enjoying the conversation, I took a look out the window. The view here faces west-northwest, I think, into a small ridge that becomes Bonny Doon on the other side and, past that, the Pacific. As I was looking out, there was what appeared to be fog, but with the temperature being what it is, that was unlikely.

The only alternative: Smoke, as in smoke from yet another local fire.

I went outside to take a closer look, and the air had a certain barbeque aroma to it.

"Fog," I said aloud. "Tell me that's fog."

Over to the solar-powered fire station, which is only a block away: "Hey, nothing's burning, is it?" I got the prize for being the 100th person to ask, and the answer, of course, was "not near here." Apparently, there are hundreds of small fires burning all over the state, none of which are burning in the area (after all, we just got finished with three big ones last month), and the smoke is wafting its way up and down the coast into the nostrils of those of us here in the San Lorenzo Valley.

The fact that any part of the state is burning is bad enough, but thankfully it's not here. And I'm not a praying man, but I will ask the supreme being to hold off any fires in these parts for as long as possible, or at least until Lindependence ends on August 4.

A couple of things that transpired today: We got the key to the hall and I discussed the set up with Kelly at the church. We may not have wireless/Internet connectivity, and if worse comes to worst, I may run the mile of ethernet cable I salvaged from the Santa Cruz Sentinel's move from my office to the church (well, it wouldn't be a mile, but it would be quite a bit). Unless we can intercept a signal from nearby -- and this makes a great case for making Felton wireless (as one person has suggested) -- then we'll just be incommunicado with the outside world on Sunday.

Meanwhile, today was a scorcher out of the starting blocks, and as I've found out the hard way, a bad day to be moving large monitors and such. Time to hit the showers.

90 and sunny (ugh -- It's starting to get like Florida, Amenditman, but without the high humidity).

There are a few releases for Myanmar version too. http://my.openoffice.org/

I've tried to install the Portuguese dictionaries on Open Office using the Wizard->Install dictionaries.

Due to permission issues I was unable to install it and didn't want to mess around with permissions our sudo.

So to install:

Download the dictionaries from here: http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/pt_PT.zip

Unzip it to your work directory

Sudo to directory /usr/share/myspell/dicts.

Copy the files pt_PT.* from where you unziped them to this folder.

Edit the dictionary.lst file and add the line:

DICT pt PT pt_PT

That's it. You now have the PT language installed and can go to Options->Language and set the default language to Portuguese.
