First, to use Twitterfeed you need an OpenID. If you have an account that states it is an OpenID (like Wordpress), then you are all set. If not, you can use a service like ClaimID to get one.

Head over to Twitterfeed and (if you have a Twitter account already, skip step 1) log in with your OpenID - you will need to be logged into your OpenID service at the time. Your login ID is the URL of your site. If you're using your ID from Wordpress, you will be prompted within Wordpress that Twitterfeed is trying to use your ID. Click allow and then your login will be complete.

After the "Welcome, glad you could make it" message, you will see a link "Go to my twitter feeds." Click this and you are half way there. If this is the first time you have logged in, you will have no twitter feeds. Click the link "Create new twitter feed" and you are on your way.

Enter your Twitter Name and Password, find the appropriate RSS feed URL you want to use and set the other options as you see fit. Once everything is set how you like it, hit the create button and you're laughing. You can edit an individual feed and change appropriate options at any time. You can even pause and start individual feeds.

I'm not sure how many feeds you can have on Twitterfeed, but don't abuse it. Remember, it's about your audience, not your spammy goodness. Have fun!

En somme, si un objet est un contenu, c'est également un contenant susceptible de recevoir d'autres objets, des objets créés par d'autres. Ils nous signalent par exemple l'existence d'une nouvelle version d'un logiciel qu'on utilise, ou bien ils nous préviennent qu'un nom de domaine en notre possession va bientôt expirer. Mais quel que soit le cas de figure, on peut voir qu'il y a toujours une action préalable (un achat dans notre exemple) conduisant à une forme d'abonnement à quelque chose (suivi sur le produit acheté). On peut donc envisager de s'appuyer sur le mécanisme de souscription mentionné au paragraphe précédent pour recevoir de tels messages. Des messages pouvant cette fois être envoyés automatiquement par des robots autorisés, grâce à une souscription qu'on aura soi-même demandée et qu'on pourra donc annuler à tout moment.

Enfin, une dernière idée me semble importante, c'est la possibilité d'adresser des messages aux objets en plus des personnes. On a vu plus haut qu'il était possible d'ajouter des objets un peu partout, y compris à l'intérieur des objets ne nous appartement pas, il s'agissait alors d'objets publics, les commentaires d'un blog par exemple. Mais il est tout à fait envisageable de pouvoir également ajouter des objets privés, visibles par nous et par le possesseur de l'objet destinataire. Or, un objet visible par deux personnes ressemble étrangement à un message vous ne trouvez pas ? C'est en tout cas ainsi que fonctionnera la messagerie intégrée aux communicateurs, il sera possible de déposer des messages sur n'importe quel objet ! Pour répondre à une offre d'emploi, on déposera par exemple notre CV directement sur l'offre concernée, pour poser une question à propos d'un produit, il suffira de déposer notre message sur ledit produit.

So while much focus has been placed on making OpenID more usable, I don't think we as application developers have leveraged the capabilities of the technology to make it more used. The majority of internet users simply do not have enough accounts or frequented applications to have the legitimate need to unify their sign-ins. While they may think it's cool, it's not a huge obstacle to remember 10 usernames and passwords. But once we start making applications that leverage the power of a consistent identity, is when even the average user will begin to say, I need to switch to OpenID, or unify my online identity.

In my opinion, I say we stop working on ways to make OpenID work better, but focus on more ways to make it work for us better. Then we can get the technology to move forward.

Another big item was the announcement about Microsoft HealthVault supporting not only Information Card authentication, but OpenID authentication as well. The decision to limit HealthVault OpenID authentication to a white list of just two providers has some (like Paul Madsen) hot under the collar.

The OpenID tutorial didn't offer much (and I guess that's all to it anyway). Generated my equivalent of User and Role authentication classes. From the tutorial, there was mention of removing the password though didn't really mention how. Nonetheless, I removed everything in the generated User and ended up with this:

Where 'identifier' is the userName counterpart. Also added a Null Object, which came in handy later on (on the next post perhaps ;-) ). Edited SecurityConfig.groovy and removed the 'password' property. Gave it a shot and obviously failed.

Pfft! Password property is nowhere to be found, me app says. Investigated, and saw that GrailsDaoImpl.groovy, which is the plugin's implementation of the UserDetailsService so happens to expect a domain class with a password property. Pfft! Specifically located at method: loadUserByUsername(final String username, final boolean loadRoles) where it calls createUserDetails(). Easy enough, I have to create my own version then, which overcomes this issue. Though I would normally compose, I just extended this class just because I'm lazy (hey, prototyping mode) :-p Simply removed the invocation to 'password' property and instead passed a blank String. Placed this in src/groovy then edited Spring beans configuration to inject this instead (love the Groovy config version!). The bean id btw is 'userDetailsService.' And tried logging in with my Blogger account, and what do you know. It worked!

But then, I realized user registration would be a pain in the ass now...

2. I haven't seen a lot of innovation in user interfaces for help desk applications, I wonder if creating a riff on the basic Getting Thing Done UIs I have seen would work and be helpful.

3. With all the unstructured data out there I wonder if a simple graphical tool designed to turn this data into actionable information would be helpful?  

What I am thinking is a visual environment with drag-and-drop parsing workflow creation where one could use predefined rules (or create their own rules) that parses a document extracting the information needed in a structured format 

So for instance you could create a "parser" for a series of emails that always have the essential same structure and get that data into a dB.

Hmm, maybe I need to think more about this, it may actually be quite useful...

For most of my direction, i followed the outline in the django book, and in some of the instructions in the current django documentation.

It took me a little while to get it all to mesh, but after i did, it all ran great! My consumer site also happens to use OpenID, and Simon Willison's consumer site library for incorporating OpenID into a consumer site. i (with help from my mentor) modified Simon's library to support and detect either version of the OpenID library for python, and made a simple switch setting to run one version or the other. Cake! It takes some time and careful planning, but it was all cake!

Given that the thread was created eight months ago, it is perhaps excusable that no one talks about single sign-on to federated grids, integration with OpenID, OpenSocial or SSOcircle, mapping of avatars to corporate identities, integration with LDAP, Active Directory, etc. Lulurun added a proposalto the OpenSim wiki to integrate with OpenID on 6/18/08. Various teams are working on mechanisms for teleporting between Second Life, OpenSim and realXtend. Ultimately these efforts will result in some kind of federated security model.

Creation of mass user accounts is fairly easy in OpenSim and realXtend from the administration console. The server command "command-script [name of scriptfile]" runs a command script containing server commands. The scriptfile can contain a series of commands in the form "create user [first] [last] [passw] [RegionX] [RegionY]". This file is easily built using any scripting language or office products like Excel and Access.

What's not easy from the console is managing groups, resetting passwords, populating the user's profile with useful data such as their first life contact information, moving a user's home region, or even getting a list of existing users and groups. All of these operations require new server APIs to be created, and from them, scripting interfaces to integrate them with command lines and web-based administrative interfaces. It's not hard work, but it does require some focused effort. Surprisingly, there seems to be little written recognition of these issues in the Second Life Architecture Working Group uses cases document. (I guess that means I should add them.)

No surprises in anything above. The real issues in the integration of office documents are: 1) the user experience; 2) the security of the implementation; and 3) the collaboration model with users who are not in SLLWs.

By user experience, I mean whether the user in the virtual world feels that the interface is both natural and efficient. If I had to edit a richly formatted Microsoft Word document using wiki markup in a notecard, I would regard that as an unnatural interface.

Security relates directly to the earlier problem of mapping avatars to corporate identities, but also involves issues not addressed by current desktop security models nor SLWWs such as being able to specify the visibility of a document to a user in the SLLW who has no document privileges in the corporate container that houses the document (file share, intranet, SharePoint site, CMS system, SLLW asset storage, etc.) There is no mechanism today to control what someone looking over my shoulder can see. realXtend and Wonderland (Sun's virtual world platform) use VNC or XTERM-based systems to link an application on the desktop to a surface. VNC has real security problems at the enterprise level  and across the firewall. Both VNC and XTERM need enterprise management support for security and compliance if IT is going to support sharing a document on your desktop via a SLLW outside the firewall.

Collaboration refers to the interaction with the document and its container and how the document is locked, how other users find out who has the lock, how they're notified when the document is checked in, how changes are tracked, etc.

Ideally, you'd like general support for generating feeds from sensors, chat, in-world events (teleporting, friending, login/logout, etc.) and general statistics generators (uptime, lag, objects/sim, etc.)  so that you can build external event logs, blogs, tracking maps, search indices of text, etc., as well as bridges to myriad social networks and sensor networks. The use of virtual worlds as interfaces to energy and environmental systems requires efficient event-based interfaces rather than the all too common high-frequency polling approaches.

Read-only media on a surface is achievable today using HTML representations of office documents (Microsoft & Open Office XML formats). The unresolved problem is how to support the numerous add-ins such as Acrobat, Flash and many others which can't yet render to an arbitrary surface which will be warped by viewer. It looks as if Linden Lab is using the Mozilla-based ubrowser which should be able to accept most, if not all, Firefox add-ins.

What should the user interface be for a read/write office document? Should an SLWW invoke your favorite word processor in a separate window, in an overlaid window inside the application via VNC, or simulate a PC screen in your virtual world running your application? I prefer the latter approach as it models the single-use behavior we expect. I would envisage a new input mode along with chat/say/shout which connects yoru keyboard to the keyboard of the virtual PC until an escape sequence is entered.

Christian's comment about prims on HTML is insightful. He suggests a subset of the general "Second Life in a browser" problem. Whether this is achieved by mapping a complex object to some HTML/3D object in VRML/SVG or X3D doesn't really matter. It's quite interesting to contemplate someone interacting with a object in a browser while someone else is interacting with it in a virtual world. (3D/2D pong anyone?) A related idea is creating viewports into virtual worlds which are viewable in the web browser. The MPEG interchange for virtual worlds proposal seems to address the requirement.

Fundamentally, what everyone wants is a cross-platform bridge with plug-ins for every 3D format. I'd also expect a bridge like this to import 3D bar charts from a spreadsheet. Export should be just as straightforward, with the proviso that the bridge should respect copy permissions.

Mark Fitzpatrick who is believed to be the father of OpenID says the goal of the initiative is not to make money but to create a community around the Internet and be a part of that community. That is the reason, websites today implementing OpenID do not have to pay for any licenses or sign contracts. It is free to use and that enables website owners to make logins more convenient for its users.

There are quite a few Internet giants backing OpenID. Microsoft, Google, Yahoo are a few of them. (Well, that covers most of them.) :) The way it works is you signup for an OpenID on one of the various providers website like claimid.com and verisign.com. You can alternatively also use existing usernames of popular services like Blogger, Wordpress, etc. as your OpenID to login into any website which uses the service. Some might think what is the point of having an OpenID? Well, the answer to that is that it benefits both the content providers as well as the users. Website owners can cut signup costs, reduce signup times, reduce password reset requests and retain users without any inconvenience. On the user side it just makes life simpler for us. No need to remember different logins and passwords. But most importantly it proves to be a great integration tool to post content to various online services from one single interface.

The technicality behind its working is really simple. Lets assume a user signs up for an OpenID and he is logged in to that OpenID service provider. The user then goes to blogger.com to write a post on his/her blog. The user will not need to enter the login information for Blogger since the Blogger service would piggyback the authenticated session off of the user's OpenID service provider. Seems really simple, doesn't it? I did register myself for an OpenID and also tried the new service Blog It! which is powered by the Type Pad blogging on my iPhone. The interface was fast, smooth and I just needed to enter my OpenID and I was logged into the various services I had selected. (Twitter, Wordpress, Blogger). I could create blog entries and update my Twitter status without the need of logging in to various service and I could do it right from my mobile. Isn't that something?
