The controversy over spoof on veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar in Bollywood hit movie “Om S

The controversy over spoof on veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar in Bollywood hit movie "Om Shanti Om" could return to haunt its actor Shah Rukh Khan as Kumar has accused him of "betrayal of trust" by not honouring his 'promise' of deleting the sequence from the movie.

"Shah Rukh had promised to delete the scene from the film when I objected. So many months have passed and he has not honoured his promise. This is nothing but betrayal of trust," Manoj Kumar told PTI here today.

The veteran actor said he complained to filmmaker Yash Chopra about it because it was Chopra who had brought Shah Rukh and director Farah Khan to his house.

SRK and Farah had aplogised to Manoj Kumar and assured him that the scene would be deleted, the noted actor pointed out.

"I have told Yash Chopra about it. This is the only thing I can do," he said while denying reports in a section of the media that he plans to file a defamation suit against the Bollywood superstar.

In a spoof in 'Om Shanti Om', Om, a junior artiste played by SRK, gains entry to a movie premier imitating Manoj Kumar.

When the real Manoj Kumar (a body double of the actor) comes, he is beaten up by security guards.

Moreover, the photograph on his driving license shown by the 'real' Manoj Kumar to the guards is in the actor's trade mark style of covering the face with his hand.

Director-choreographer Farah Khan has sought to bring the curtain down on a raging controversy over

Director-choreographer Farah Khan has sought to bring the curtain down on a raging controversy over the depiction of Bollywood veteran Manoj Kumar in her film Om Shanti Om, saying she isn't "bothered" about him any more.

"I am not bothered about him anymore," said Farah over the phone when asked for her reaction to Manoj Kumar's decision to file a case against her over his portrayal in the 2007 blockbuster.

Manoj Kumar had told a media outlet he would be filing a case against the makers of Om Shanti Om as they have not kept the promise of deleting the scenes that mock him.

He had said that he gave the nod to the film because of the intervention of the legendary director Yash Chopra who had mediated talks between him, Farah and Shah Rukh Khan, who starred in the movie.

Manoj said all of them had mutually agreed that the objectionable scenes would be deleted but this was not done.

On being asked if the scene was shot keeping in mind the artistic liberty of the film industry, the offended actor had said: "I had studied in school that liberty is the undying passion of the mind and one cannot use it to humiliate others. This is an insult to Indian nationalism and patriotism."

Manoj Kumar had taken objection to the scene in which his younger double was shown being beaten up by the police outside a movie theatre since they could not recognize him.

He had also objected to another scene in which Shah Rukh delivered a mock "Thank you" speech in a drunken state and concluding by saying he was Manoj Kumar.

Tik jis..

Like usual, gori got hecka busy, distracted, aur of course, hacked by yey M1M (boo!) during Pride, so we're in the process of putting up a whole bunch of naya goriji Frameline 32 queer filim fest vids, some vids about SF Pride (aur the real deal, Pink Saturday na?).. the latter of which gori spent getting felt up by a bunch of garam kalay desi fags while dancing to Bollywood remixes (yey!) :) How I manage to constantly be surrounded by gorgeous ladkay is beyond me.. not complaining na? ;) So hope u all had ek rockin Gay (well Queer, really) Pride 2008 na? :D Haven't read the news yet, but bahut pyar to voh desis holding the first ever Pride marches in teen cities Hindustan mein: Kolkatta, Bangalore aur New Delhi :) Hope u are all well, khushi & hung over bhi! :) Yey for getting drunk in honor of well, a riot that happened at a bar in the first place na? (acchi justification, tee hee..) BTW here is the Trikone Pride party flyer I mention in the Pink Sat video (below) with the garam kala Sri LKS-like yaar (I can do without the muscles lol) aur some way-too-bleached for gori, well, gori na? Guess they were trying to show contrast or something lol!

Anyhow, as usual yeh blog needs mass updating. Most important cheez to say here is ur gori's had ek bara realization na? That I need to re-work queer desi cheez into mehri vids aur blog/Revver vlog aur zindagi na? Is Sri Lumba Kala Sundar ek queer-identified bi yaar? (like gori na? except well I guess gori's ek suheli or yaari or kuch bhi...) FYI for mehri more straight-ish readers/watchers, there's hecka queer desis out there. Those are the peeps gori first knew, in terms of being introduced to desi community in general na? Hard to believe some folks are still in denial about that...

Anyhow, for the moment, here's a link to gori's queer filim festival vids (click the text na?) aur here is ek link to the revver playlist with some accha Pink Sat aur Pride vlogs, aur finally, here's ek link to mehri 160+ vids in general- wow! Goal is to get 600+ vids total up & running. I do deeply appreciate if you can watch gori vids directly on revver.com (if you don't have the link at any point in time lol, go to revver.com, put 'goriji' in the search, & you'll see a disorganized list of sub vids that way na?) Soonish there will be individual links on yeh blog to everything (u can see a few of the older ones on the vids pages right now at bottom of the pages list <-- to ur left on this page...) Please do go to the vids directly via this blog or revver sirf, because if you go via google, u'll find that many affiliate vids (not hosted directly on revver) are hacked (yep, psycho M1M again) so they don't fully load, in some cases have been replaced by other vids, say they've been removed for ek 'violation' (although revver confirmed it's a hack) or worst of all for gori, may not be reporting back your clicks properly (which means I don't get paid, not that gori's made any $$ to speak of yet lol.. but still hopeful)!

So there's the dirt. For the ambitious, u can click on yeh 'desi' gur dil icon link on any revver page of gori's vids, then access various organized playlists from the bar at the left of that page na? :) Shukriya everyone for watching mehri vids! :D

BTW (since we don't want the gori-lurking yaaron to feel left out)- did u know that gori is having yeh kam contest? Deko gori's week 13 cafe lurks (hint hint: parts char AUR *panch* na? Panch has the naughty bits!) If u can out-foil (lol) yeh M!M ulloo hacker, u can get some fun kam prizes from gori na? I'm serious... phir bhi, no one has succeeded at this challenge yet! hmm... grand prize is lund ka chus (I'm sooo serious na?) So check it out!

OMFG I can't get this out of my head:

"Deko, deko

hai shaam buri diwani

Dheeray, dheeray

ban jaye na koi kahani...

dilbar hai dilkash hai

dildar nazaray hain

aaj zameen par utnay kitne sitare hai

atlo hosh na mi damaan

hum hai dil hai aur janam

bas diwaniki diwaniki diwaniki hai

na kohi rahe sam rahe par

yeh ilzaam lagay kispar

bas diwaniki diwaniki diwaniki hai"

(..uh ok maybe it's really 'deewaangi' phir bhi.. kuch bhi.. also isn't janam = sanam? kya? ..confused gori.. not to mention the Urdu or whatever that is lol)

(use total fake overly-nasal wishing u were Amrikan accent here:)

"All hot girls put your hands up & say:

'Om Shanti Om'

All cool boys go on make some noise & say:

'Om Shanti Om'

Om Shanti Om

Om Shanti..."

(repeat loop in gori's delirious head unendingly lols...)

Stay tuned because gori has had a serious revelation about starting some sort of interactive desi club for queer aur straight desis together.. hmm... maybe with Indian restaurant food rating contests, aur 'which Bolly filim scene IYHO is the worst in terms of overall execution' competitions, (for prizes of course!) ..hmm... some variation of the interesting-sounding shaadi.com 'lock & key' parties (lekin how to make something that can insert :P both genders uh... I might be getting myself in deep (no pun intended) here).. well anyhow, let's just say I'm inspired! Gotta make some community in person & get around the psycho ex somehow na? Well see if this goes anywhere or if in a couple of days gori is saying 'what was I thinking?' ;) tee hees...

K now drink some water (bahut pani) aur get to sleep early.. unless ur in India/South Asia elsewhere, in which case may this find u safe & well, u've then had another nite's sleep than all of us SF mein, so u might be actually sober by now.. lols! :)

After raising a storm last November for the clownish way he was projected in Shah Rukh Khan’s Om S

After raising a storm last November for the clownish way he was projected in Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om, Kumar is now considering legal action. This despite Yash Chopra having brokered peace with the aggrieved Kumar by taking a repentant SRK and director Farah Khan to his residence last year for a patch-up.

Kumar’s peeve now is that he was assured that the objectionable portion in the film would be deleted, but that hasn’t happened. So he’s left with no choice but to think of approaching lawyers for legal recourse.

“Yash Chopra did come to my place with Shah Rukh and others. I made them feel comfortable and didn’t even give them a chance to apologise. It was a delightful atmosphere. They said that portion would be deleted, but they haven’t kept their word. It was Yash’s responsibility since he brought them over. I called him yesterday and he said he was in London,” Kumar told BT.

The actor and filmmaker said he’s okay with the scene where they’ve shown the man playing him hiding his face. “But when he’s seated at the premiere how can the police not recognise him and beat him up? Today if Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan enter a premiere will they be beaten up by the police,” complained Kumar.

But considering Om Shanti Om is a fun film, shouldn’t he be more liberal and take the comic scene in his stride? “I’m a good actor, I’m a bad actor, a good filmmaker or a bad filmmaker, you can voice your opinion. But you can’t do this. You can’t hit below the belt. As per our constitution, a film can’t have something like this. Kisi zinda aadmi ka mazaak nahin uda sakte hain. First they make fun and second they don’t even keep their word. That’s upsetting,” he grumbled, adding, “I’m not Mahatma Gandhi!”

Bollywood studio Eros International, listed on London’s Aim market, saw revenues and profits s

Bollywood studio Eros International, listed on London's Aim market, saw revenues and profits soar last year helped by the success of Om Shanti Om, which scored the biggest first week in Indian cinema history when it opened in November.

The company predicted another bumper performance this year based on its new releases. It is also planning to move into Indian television broadcasting, through either a joint venture, partnership or acquisition. To bolster these ambitions the company may float its domestic operations in India.

In the year to the end of March Eros saw revenues increase 70% to $113m (£57m), while profits rose 47% to $45.5m. The results, better than City expectations, pushed shares in the company up 2.5p to 275p. The company floated two years ago at 176p a share.

Om Shanti Om was the most successful of the 18 films the company released during the year. Underlining the worldwide appeal of Bollywood productions, all but two of Eros's releases last year had global distribution.

Om Shanti Om, which pays homage to the classic Hindi movies of the past few decades, is a product of the Eros studio system, which owes much to the old Hollywood model. It relies on contracting acting talent for years in advance - such as Om Shanti Om's lead actor, Shahrukh Khan, often referred to as India's Tom Cruise.

But the company has been expanding beyond films into television, digital content and syndication. It has deals with partners including Sony, Lionsgate and Viacom TV and video-on-demand partners across the world.

Eros also has a 24% stake in the global Bollywood television and music TV channel B4U, available in the UK on digital platforms such as Virgin Media.

Models, we often hear, are eager to make it in Bollywood. But Yuvika Chaudhary, who follows up her cameo in Om Shanti Om with a lead role in Summer 2007, is a selfproclaimed exception. It took a lot of chasing on the part of the producers to get her to do this film, says Yuvika.

"Every time they came and said 'Do it, do it, do it', I refused," says the actress, who has been paired in the film with Sikandar Kher She is, however, not immune to fame. "Though I was hardly there (in OSO), people still call me Dolly, after the character What more can I say?" she asks, not a little proud.

The film's director Farah Khan and star Shah Rukh Khan, she says, were impressed by her work. According to Yuvika, Farah had to do a bit of wooing, too. "I was the first one to be approached for the role in OSO," she says. "Farah left the choice to me, saying, 'If you refuse the role, only then will I approach somebody else." It was the thought of working with Shah Rukh that clinched the deal. "He is a charmer I couldn't keep my eyes off him," she says.

Her most prized possession is a message from Farah, saying, "Shah Rukh is really impressed with you and so am I," It took her a long time to accept Summer 2007, Yuvika continues. Modelling assignments, including a cola ad with Kunal Kapoor where Farah spotted her, were a more attractive proposition.

Here, too, her idol influenced her decision. "I was turning down film offers, but then Kirron aunty Anupam uncle, Farah and even SRK told me to take up Summer 2007 SRK said, 'In the initial stages of my career; even I did films that I thought wouldn't do the magic."

Her initial reluctance gave way to interested involvement as the shooting progressed: "I realised that Summer 2007 is destiny's gift to me. It taught me that acting is a lot of hard work." As she sets out on the road to stardom, Yuvika still retains the young fan's gushing enthusiasm for King Khan. "When I looked into his eyes, it was hard to believe that he is in his forties," says the actress. It was a bit of magic, that overwhelming star quality. It's magic ghat Yuvika hopes will a one day be hers, too.

Chehre se jhalki hui hain

Once again Thanks to Suratikaka -- You rock.

Dard-e-Disco is one of my favorite song of this year. I always feel dancing whenever listen to it not because of SRK but Vishal-Shekar's music. They both are great musicians.

And, this funny version of it made me laugh on laughter day. This song also indicate that SRK's six pack only attract street dogs not girls ;).

DARD-E-DISCO in GUJARATI દુ:ખનાં ડાંડિયા

હું ડાહ્યો ડમરો, સીધો સાદો.....

(Deepika above) (WARNING: THESE 2 PICTURES ABOVE MAY CAUSE YOU TO PUKE ON YOUR COMPUTER!!)

As you all should know Sonam Kapoor looks a thousand times better than Deepika Padukone. Just looks at the pictures above. But then the question is who looks better with Ranbir? Well then again Sonam Kapoor looks better with Ranbir Kapoor than Deepika Padukone looks with Ranbir Kapoor! So then why is Ranbir dating Deepika because he's an idiot! Sonam Kapoor has not had so much publicity v.s. Deepika is because one is that Sonam doesn't go out with 3 men in the same month and then go to her ex's birthday parties, unlike Deepika who does. Another reason is that you don't see Soman showing all her skin and trying to be nude! Where as you will see Deepika doing this. Just look OSO v.s. Saawariya, Sonam is all covered and looks soooo pretty where as Deepika has almost no clothes on and looks sooo ugly. Another thing that I can't stand is when Ranbir Kapoor (Deepika's boyfriend, should be Sonam's) say's Deepika is so "shy", I mean seriously! Come he should be a little more smarter than that, I don't have anything against the man, I like love him to the utter most, but Sonam is shy. Deepika is not, she goes around wearing almost nude clothes, all her photoshoots are her wearing almost nothing, and the new pictures of her and Upen that came out are just a wrap! My next blog will be about her and Upen so look out for it! Or if you can't wait just go to google images and type " Deepika and Upen" and see for yourself! So as you can see SONAM IS WAY BETTER THAN DEEPIKA! Vote about your favorite: Deepika or Sonam: Click on this title, which will bring you on a different page then on the bottom of that page you'll find a comment box. That is were you can vote!

Shah Rukh Khan aka King Khan does ads for alcohol and has done a few movies with him drinking such as Devadas and Don. Many people are agreeing to ban alcohol and smoking in films. But who will stop the King Khan? Well, the Minister will, he supporters the ban of alcohol and smoking. He also criticized the King Khan by talking on how the Khan was playing a role as a youth and was drinking in his recent movie with the oh so ugly Deepika Padukone, Om Shanti Om (OSO)! Also it was reported that Saif Ali Khan had to miss an awards ceremony and rush to the hospital a year ago because of a minor heart attack! So my opinion is that I think that King Khan has more issues in his life than worrying about smoking I mean the guy worked with Deepika! He must have brain issues and needed to take a few smokes! You can't blame him, just like my wonderful Shahid Kapoor had to take a few smokes because of his Depression! But thank god he's over it! But also it's not the same for SRK because he does films with children like Chak De India which is sending a bad message to those little kid fans of his who love him! But then there was other news about Hrithik Roshan and his addiction to cigarettes! That was a real downer for me! But then again he'll let go of the addiction hopefully!

After wicketkeeper,Batsman and captain, now you can see Dhoni in his new avatar. Check out the latest Pepsi Ad. Dhoni is in pure south indian look with lungi and imitating Rajnikanth with dialogues of Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om ( Remember "Mind It") Very Hilarious ad and Dhoni has done a quite good job. ( Supposedly earned lot of Money also )

After asking actors to quit smoking on screen, the minister has once again taken on Bollywood, but this time over alcohol. According to Ramadoss, movies at present more often than not use 'drunken' scenes as a tool of humour - specifically aiming at Shah Rukh Khan's rendition of a drunken junior artist in the movie 'Om Shanti Om'. Ramadoss lashed out at actors potraying scenes of consuming alcohol to drown their sorrow. He expressed pity that these actors have been idolized by the country's young and old.

Ramadoss on actors enacting such drunken scenes says, "Actors drinking on screen will encourage youngsters to take up the habit. Scenes depicting alcohol consumption in films need to be immediately stopped."

Kareena Kapoor’s weight loss has a global resonance. Rhys Blakely looks at the slimmer picture

Kareena Kapoor's weight loss has a global resonance. Rhys Blakely looks at the slimmer picture in the Sunday Times.

For years a fleshy physique was considered a must for an actress aspiring to break into Bollywood. Now its first “size-zero” female star has the sub-continent’s cinematic purists in a tizzy, amid fears that an imported Western fondness for slim women threatens to debase the country’s culture.

The Indian press has of late been preoccupied by the newly svelte body of Kareena Kapoor, one of the country’s biggest – if now skinniest – leading ladies. Kapoor had lost several pounds for Tashan, her latest film, the result, she said, of “power yoga” and a special diet. Critics, a little unkindly, suggested that she resembled a “barely alive cadaver”.

Deepika Padukone watched as Manikantan’s camera zoomed in on Sabu Cyril’s set. A moustached Shah

Deepika Padukone watched as Manikantan’s camera zoomed in on Sabu Cyril’s set. A moustached Shahrukh Khan muttered something in a strange, incomprehensible language which was supposed to be Tamil. He peppered in with regular utterances of “Yenna rascala, mind it!” He was Omaswami Shanthinathan, a ficticious South Indian actor with a caricature of a name. His character was called Quick Gun Murugan, a reference to Lord Murugan who is revered by Tamils. He started wrestling with a stuffed tiger, saying, “Naughty pussy, who’s your father”. When he defeated the tiger, a fat, dark and short guy hugged him saying “Sooper!”

We all remember this scene from Om Shanti Om. We also remember the euphoric response this scene generated in the theatres.

South Indians should take it as a compliment. In a high-profile movie, they spend five minutes making fun of us. Which means South Indians must be doing something right. Like the Jews, we are achieving enough to make us unpopular. They would like to look down on us, but we don't make it easy for them. We are more successful than they want us to be.

So who are we? Where do we come from? What is the civilization that has produced us? Let’s talk a bit about ourselves.

We come from a land steeped in culture. A land where the sounds of the mridangam and nadhaswaram blend mellifluously with the aromas of sandalwood and sambar. Where the Devaaram and Thiruvaasagam were composed amidst the imposing and intricate temples. Where Aadhiseshan anchored his tail and churned the ocean of milk. Where Parasurama threw his axe and created land for his people. Where Nataraja did his cosmic dance. This is Dravidam, the land where the three oceans meet.

We were speakers of old classical Tamil, which later diversified into Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Malayalam then diverged from Tamil. Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tulu are known as the Pancha Dravida languages.

The four South Indian states have enriched the culture of one another. We share a classical music tradition called Carnatic music. Telugu, Kannada and Tamil are all used for Carnatic music. The great Carnatic artists come from all our states. Religion, food and classical dance forms have also traversed across state boundaries.

Shaivism is the predominant religion, with a lesser degree of Vaishnavism, and minorities of Muslims and Christians. South Indian temples follow the Indo-Dravidian architectural style. Tirupati, Sabarimala, Belur, Halebidu, Madurai, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur, Srirangam and Chidambaram are home to some of the greatest temples in the country.

South Indian cuisine is rice-based. A typical South Indian meal comprises of rice mixed with gravy and eaten with side dishes. Several South Indian dishes which originated in one province have now become part of life in the other provinces. Aviyal from Kerala is popular in Tamil Nadu. Sambar from Tamil Nadu is present in Andhra Pradesh. Mysore masala dosa from Karnataka is prevalent in Tamil Nadu. Some dishes, such as idlis and dosas, are popular throughout the country.

South India has four states (in alphabetical order) : Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Andhra Pradesh is the only state in India formed purely on the basis of linguistic identity. The Telangana, Andhra and Rayalaseema regions were merged together because of one reason: Telugu. Universally accepted as a melodious language, it's known as the Italian of the East, because every word ends with a vowel. Krishna Deva Raya, king of Vijayanagar, said "Desha bhasha landu Telugu lessa" (Of all the languages of the nation, Telugu is the sweetest). Tamil poet Bharatiyar called Telugu "Sundara Telungu" (Beautiful Telugu).

Andhra Pradesh is the state with the most number of engineering colleges in India. The top educational institutions in India, like IIT and BITS, have massive representation from Andhra Pradesh. Every one of the 50 states in the USA has Telugu Associations. The Bay Area and New Jersey have become Telugu fortresses.

Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, is often known as the second IT capital of India, next to Bangalore. It's also home to a buzzing biotechnology industry. Entrepreneurs like Ramoji Rao, Anji Reddy and Ramalinga Raju have made their fortunes in Hyderabad.

In the heartlands, the Godavari and Krishna valleys are fertile, rice-growing areas, earning Andhra Pradesh the title of "The Rice Bowl of India". These rivers are great sources of fish, and the fishing industry is also supported by towns and villages on the Bay of Bengal, such as Machlipatnam.

The cuisine of Andhra Pradesh is known for its extensive use of chilli. It's the spiciest of the four cuisines in the South. The gongura chutney is arguably the signature dish of Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabadi cuisine is a subculture, most famous for its Hyderabadi biryani.

Karnataka is a land whose name conjures up a kaleideoscope of images. The magnificent ruins of Hampi which produced Hanuman's vanar sena, the temples of Belur and Halebidu, sandalwood, handicrafts, the Mysore maharaja Palace, the Canara Coast, Yakshagana and Tippu Sultan. Mother Karnataka has nurtured the Cauvery river into a beautiful damsel ready for her matrimony at Hogennakkal.

Karnataka has lent its name to the time-honored classical music form of Carnatic music. Countless works of Carnatic music have been produced in the Kannada language. Karnataka cuisine is similar to the other South Indian states but characterised by the use of lentils. The vegetarian Udipi restaurants are a sight all over India and indeed the world. Delicacies like Bisibelabath and the famous Mysore masala dosa have their origins in Karnataka.

Karnataka is the kingpin of the IT industry in India. Bangalore is the symbol of the new India, and has usurped its more-established rivals to become the most well-known Indian city in the world. Its name is synonymous with BPOs, call centres, ASPs and R&D. Infosys and Wipro are two world-famous IT giants from the city. The who's who of global IT companies are found in Bangalore today.

The southwestern part of Karnataka is home to another language: Tulu. The unofficial territory of the Tulu language is Tulu Nadu, with Mangalore as its centerpiece. Udipi has a sizeable Tulu population. The Tuluvas are known for their migratory instincts. Arguably the most famous Tulu proverb is "Oorudu nanjaanda paarad badkodu", which means, "If it's tough at home, run away and survive". One in every four Tuluvas is believed to live in Mumbai. Tulu women like Aishwarya Rai and Shilpa Shetty are among the most beautiful in the country.

Kerala is India's most socially developed state. For decades, Kerala has been number one in hygiene, literacy, women's rights and life expectancy. Kerala is known for its greenery, beaches and idyllic backwaters. Kovalam Beach, Kumarakom, Thekkady and Munnar have become hot tourist destinations, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The Malayalam language is the youngest in the Dravidian language family, and has arguably the highest number of sounds of any Indian language. It has sounds borrowed from Tamil, such as the zha, the hard La and the hard Na (none of which are found in Sanskrit). It also has sounds borrowed from Sanskrit, such as the hard Kha, hard Tha and hard Bha (none of which are found in Tamil). More trivially, Malayalam is the language with the longest name when written in English. It is also the only language whose name is a palindrome when written in English. In other words, it's name is exactly the same when spelled backwards.

Kathakali is arguably Kerala's most famous art form, and often comes to mind when you think of Kerala. Kalarippayattu, the ancient martial art, has survived to this day in Kerala. Mohiniattam is Kerala's main dance form. Keralite dresses include the traditional mundu, and sarees with a unique border. Kerala's cuisine is known for its extensive use of coconut. Common dishes include appam, puttu, aviyal, idiappam, erissery, fish curry and several non-vegetarian pickles. Dosa, idly, sambar and rasam from neighboring Tamil Nadu are also very much part of the diet. Onam is often called the "national" festival of Kerala. Keralites of all religions, living all over the world, celebrate this festival jubilantly.

Religion in Kerala has unique features. The temples follow the strictest traditions, and do not even let non-Hindus in. Sabarimala is one of the pre-eminent Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. The Ananthapadmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram is another must-see Hindu shrine. The Christians of Kerala constitute one of the earliest Christian communities in the world, originally converted by Saint Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ himself. Northern Kerala has a Muslim majority. The secular nature of India is exhibited in Kerala, where it's common for Hindus, Muslims and Christians to live in close proximity, understanding the culture of one another.

Malayalees are probably the only community in India where there isn't much distance between the elite and the proletariat. As every Malayalee is educated, you are not very likely to find baseless superstitions among the common man. In addition to being literate, Malayalees are also well-informed. For decades, India's best selling newspaper has been the Malayala Manorama. There are few sights that better represent Kerala than a slightly slim man carrying an umbrella in one hand and a Malayala Manorama in his other hand!

The Malayalees have migrated to every corner of the world, in various capacities. The Malayalee dispora includes accomplished journalists and statesmen at one end of the spectrum. It also includes less-skilled thattukada (utility shop) owners. The Middle East has witnessed an exceptional influx of Malayalees for decades, and it is often said that the Gulf economy almost entirely supports Kerala. Malayalam is claimed to be the most-heard non-official language in the Middle East.

Wherever they go, the Malayalees form a closely-knit community. With less regard for caste and even religion, they come to gether and establish their Malayalee traditions in their host countries. They have learnt several languages depending on where they migrate. Even for Malayalees living in Kerala, it is not uncommon to find them knowing four languages (English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam).

Tamil Nadu, the land of Tamils, is a land whose influence outweighs its size. Tamil kings conquered South East Asia, taking Hinduism and the Ramayana there. Islam is also known to have reached South East Asia from Tamil Nadu. Zen was founded by Bodhidharma, a prince of the Tamil Pallava kingdom. The prophet Thiruvalluvar gave the world the masterpiece Thirukkural, a collection of 1330 pearls of wisdom. Only the Bible and the Quran have been translated into more languages than the Thirukkural.

The Tamils are cerebral people with great faith in knowledge. The best mathematicians, chess players and doctors have been Tamils. They have the secure mindset associated with communities who have a rich culture. They are achievement-oriented, hardworking people who constantly aspire to become better. They speak the best English in India. A common Tamil misconception is that engineering and medicine are the only pathways to success. They don’t trust professions like show business and journalism.

A disproportionate number of top educational institutions in India are in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is probably one of the few places in the developing world where the healthcare is better than most developed countries. The Apollo Hospital in Chennai, the Christian Medical College in Vellore, Jipmer in Pondicherry and the Aravind Eye Care Centre in Madurai are easily the best in India, and attract medical tourists from all over the world. A unique feature is that these are both medical colleges and hospitals at once. While they provide world class medical care, they concurrently nurture the next generation of capable doctors. In general, I would not advise you to trust doctors in the developing world. But if it’s Dr Janakiraman from Jipmer or Dr Ananthakrishnan from Apollo, have no fear. As Lord Murugan said, yaamirukka bayamaen (why fear when I am here?)

Tamil cultural symbols include the classical dance form bharatanatyam, the musical form villuppaattu, the Tanjore paintings, the kanjeevaram sarees, jallikkattu (bullfighting), silambattam (the Tamil martial art), the sport kabaddi, the aadu puli aattam (Goat Tiger Game), the yaazh (a musical instument of the ancient Tamils), the nataraja (Shiva in his cosmic dance), the vel (spear of Lord Muruga) and the yaali (a mythical creature found in Tamil Nadu temples). Worship of Lord Muruga is at an all-India high in Tamil Nadu, earning Lord Muruga the name of thamizh kadavul (Tamil God). The Tamils have colorful mythology about Lord Muruga, such as his conquest of Valli’s heart and his feud with his brother Ganesha which made him flee furiously to Pazhani.

Pongal, Tamil New Year and Karthigai are festivals celebrated by Tamils regardless of caste, creed and religion. A festival unique to Madurai is the Teppam Festival (Float Festival). Thaipusam is celebrated by certain communities. Universal Hindu festivals like Deepavali and Vinayagar Chathurthi are also popular among Tamils. Tamil traditions include naming the child on the 11th day (always done by the maternal uncle), the valaikappu ceremony for pregnant women, and wedding customs like janavasam (procession), oonjal (swing) and nalangu (a game between bride and groom).

The food of Tamils is predominantly vegetarian, with extensive use of tamarind. Idlis, vadas and dosas (generically known as tiffin) which originated in Tamil Nadu are now popular all over India. Dishes unique to Tamils include murukku, vathakuzhambu, kaarakuzhambu, pongal and its festive variant chakkrapongal (sweet Pongal). There are some subcultures of nonvegetarianism such as Chettinad Cuisine. In an otherwise tea-drinking country, the Tamils are coffee freaks, and have turned their Madras filter coffee into an art form.

South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, has a special relationship with an island off our southeastern coast. An island known as Serendip, Heladiva, Eelam, Ceylon, Lanka, Ilankai and Sri Lanka. Historically the most common Tamil name for the island has been Eelam, as evidenced by several mentions of Eelam in ancient Tamil literature. The Tamil presence on Eelam goes back millenia. Yaazhpaanam (Jaffna) is a cradle of Tamil culture and spirituality as much as Madurai, Thanjavur or Kanchipuram. The Yaazhpaana Vaibava Malai and the Dakshina Kailaya Puraanam are examples of Tamil literature produced in ancient Eelam. Eelathu Poothanthevanar, a poet from Eelam, is known to have visited Madurai during the Sangam age.

Tamil Shaivite Hinduism is prevalent in Eelam. There is extensive use of the Devaaram and Thiruvasagam for Shiva worship. The universal Hindu deity Vinayakar, and the Tamil god, Murugan, are also revered. The pancha eswarams (five Shiva temples) in five corners of the island are a tribute to Shiva. The most famous of the pancha eswarams is Koneswaram in Thirukonamalai (Trincomalee). Swamy Hill which houses Koneswaram is known as Dakshina Kailasam (southern cousin of Kailasha mountain where Lord Shiva is believed to reside). In its heyday, Koneswaram was a temple of unusual size and grandeur, and attracted pilgrims from all over the Indian subcontinent. Shaivite saints of Tamil Nadu have sung about Koneswaram and its northwestern cousin Ketheswaram in the Devaaram. Kadhirgamam and the Nallur Kandaswamy temple are two centres of Murugan worship. Kadhirgamam is where Lord Muruga is said to have courted Valli.

The Tamil diaspora has a huge component of Sri Lankan Tamils, who have taken the Tamil culture to faraway lands. Tamil traditions like Shaivite Hinduism and bharatanatyam are well-preserved by the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora. These Tamils have supported the South Asian diaspora in several countries by setting up temples, CD shops, grocery stores, restaurants and utility shops. Scarborough in Toronto, East Ham in London and La Chapelle in Paris are some South Asian localities with a large component of Sri Lankan Tamils. They have maintained their tradition of investing in education. The UK Tamil community today boasts 6000 doctors, several BBC newscasters, a music artiste and a chess player. The Canadian Tamil community has produced doctors, engineers, sportspeople and writers. There's even an association of Tamil doctors in the Canadian province of Ontario. They certainly remind you of their brethren in Tamil Nadu who also make excellent doctors and engineers.

The South is where India’s future lies. The South is where literacy is higher, hygiene is greater, women’s rights are better, caste conflicts are fewer, and religious clashes are nonexistent. The South is where the common man’s earning capacity has been elevated, resulting in a higher per capita income. The four Southern states are growing at a rate comparable to China. The South is home to 80% of the top educational institutions in India. The South is where IBM, Google, Microsoft, HP, Nokia and Samsung have set up shop. It is where the automobile industry thrives, alluring the likes of BMW, Hyundai, Nissan and Renault. It is where medical tourism has come of age.

The presence of South Indians is massive in the Indian diaspora too. South India produces a phenomenal number of Silicon Valley professionals, comparable only to the Chinese. This has drawn a comment from Bill Gates that South Indians and Chinese are the most intelligent people in the world. Half the Indian white-collar professionals in the USA are from Andhra Pradesh, with another sizeable chunk from Tamil Nadu. Every major country in this world (and many minor ones) have significant Tamil populations. The Malayalee migration is the stuff of legend, and Chandran Nair is known to have a thattukada on the moon. Telugu in the USA, Tamil in Southeast Asia, and Malayalam in the Middle East, are the dominant Indian languages in these regions.

The rascalas rock! Mind it!
