The Balancing Act
These days, most of us work two jobs—the one that pays, and the one we love (at least most of the time): raising our kids.

On the messageboards at iVillage.com, they have great tips on how to make it easier to do both at once. It's also a great place to share advice of your own, and to get support if something's getting you down. And though it's mostly for Moms, working Dads can find plenty of helpful advice, too.

Here are a few of the best tips for balancing work and family:

Get up before your kids do. Painful, but worth it. Getting that extra 15 minutes of sleep is nothing compared to the calmness you'll feel if you get up and get yourself ready first. Whatever it takes for you: work out, take a shower, get the coffee down your throat. When your act is together, it makes it easier to get their acts together.

Prep ahead. You do it at work, why not do yourself a favor and think a few steps ahead at home, too? This can mean anything from picking out their outfits for the next day before going to bed, to making lunches the night before, to keeping casseroles frozen for fast and easy dinners. A little prep can prevent a mad dash.

Stick to a routine. Whether it's getting dressed in the morning, or eating dinner at night, make sure your kids know what to expect when, and what's expected of them. A lot of melt-downs can be avoided by everyone knowing the plan.

Stay involved with your kids' care. Okay, so you work during the days, but that doesn't mean you can't be an active participant in your kids' daycare or school. If you can't drop in for lunch like stay-at-home parents, maybe you can bring in an activity for the kids, or a snack. Or you can use your work skills to do something for the class, like build the kids a little website, or cut out the patterns for a class project. Your kids will feel like you care, and so will the school.

Save some time for you. Make sure when all is said and done that there's some time for you and your partner to be adults together. It can be a lunch date, dinner once a week, or even renting a movie. Just build it into the schedule. It'll help you feel better about all the demands on your time. Because if you're not a happy camper, you can't expect the other campers to be happy.

We all have to do what it takes to keep the ship afloat. Hope these tips help to give your ship a little more buoyancy.

A judge stopped a trial, exonerating a man of cocaine charges, after a video of the defendant's arrest contradicted the testimony of two officers. An internal affairs investigation was under way, police officials said Monday, and the district attorney's office was expected to take up the matter. and both testified Friday that they chased into his apartment building last year and saw him toss a black object.

They said one of the officers picked up the object a few feet from Alarcon, a 29-year-old grocery store worker, and found cocaine inside. But produced a 37-minute video that he said came from the apartment building's surveillance camera. The reported that the tape, a copy of which was obtained by the newspaper, shows the officers took longer than 20 minutes to find the drugs and that two other officers helped in the search.

Sup guys?
How’s your state of mind? I expect it to be nothing less than awesome!
So, guys, this is

Sup guys?

How’s your state of mind? I expect it to be nothing less than awesome!

So, guys, this is my last post before I get recruited. I have to leave in about 12 hours, I will have to get up at 4:30 am lol.

I really don’t know what to post this time, I feel very excited about going, so I will probably talk about that.

I feel like there’s a whole new chapter of my life is getting started in 12 hours! Although the army here is mandatory, I still feel like this is a very good thing. You know, in Russia a man isn’t considered one in the eyes of his father until he gets recruited and goes through the whole process of being a Russian soldier.

To tell you the truth, when I was little, back in Ukraine, I was so freaking afraid of going to the army, you have no idea! The thought itself was terrifying is hell! All the stories people would tell about the service back there… they would always involve vodka, officers who don’t give a crap of the soldiers and cruel – cruel guard duty or kitchen duty… not even mentioning the food and life in a Kazarma ( mutual room for 30 soldiers..), well not a room, a freaking tent - that’s what it was! Lol!

And it still is that way over there. Israeli army compared to that is heaven. I visited the base I would be going to after I complete first 2 month, and there is a fridge, couch, TV and a heating battery in practically every room. More than that, there is a supermarket so you can buy stuff you are missing or just get some snack or something, hell! There is a Burger King there! Jeez..

I see Israeli army kind of like a duplication of American college.. You have a dorm and all, 8 to 5 you work and than you are free to do whatever you want, don’t forget that your friends are by your side so the army experience is freaking Gewd !

K, it’s time for me to get packing! So I will see you guys the next weekend and share some experiences with you!

Take care!

Customs officers have seized more than 100 DVDs believed to contain illegal pornography during a search of a Perth property.
Australian Customs officials say the DVDs, seized in the Perth suburb of Wembley, contain material depicting "abhorrent sexual acts, including bondage".

They say they have been investigating the matter since May 2007, when they first intercepted a package containing illegal pornographic material at the Perth international mail centre.

Another six packages had been intercepted since then, they said.

A total of 19 DVDs in the posted packages were found to breach customs regulations while a search yesterday of a man's house located a further 102 DVDs believed to feature "abhorrent sexual acts". (news)

We are very proud to announce that SLIM-OR SCALA is now legally registered with the State of Oregon

We are very proud to announce that SLIM-OR SCALA is now legally registered with the State of Oregon as a Mutual Benefit Nonprofit corporation. This allows us to open a bank account for the organization as well as provides us with a more clear legal and procedural framework to conduct our organization business. Thank you to all of our SCALA officers, especially Crystal Neal, Treasurer, who was a of great assistance in completing this registration process. Special thanks to Perry for her support and agreeing to be a signer on our bank account.

The minutes of our incorporation board meeting are here.

Our newly drafted bylaws are here.

One byproduct of this incorporation is that we now have no members! Before now, we have just considered anyone in the SLIM-Oregon program as a member, but under Oregon State law all members must consent to their membership. Therefore, if you wish to continue to be a member of this organization we will need you to send your full legal name and street address to the corporation's secretary Candise Branum hermione[dot]danger[at]gmail[dot]com.

Basically, if you become a member you will be able to vote for officers and on any changes to the organizational structure. You will not be required to do anything as a result of your membership, however (no dues, etc.)

Here are the details:
1. You will not be excluded from participating in any SCALA event as a non-member. However, if you wish to participate in any member elections you must consent to be a member. Under Oregon State law we must keep a roster of all members including a street address. This roster is part of the corporation's public record and is open to the public. In order for someone to view or records they must request to do so. Your address will not be posted to any website.

2. As a member you are entitled to participate in annual elections. Each fall we will hold an election for the next term's SCALA officers. Also, as a member, your votes are required in order for us to make changes to our Bylaws. If you are not a member you will not be entitled to a vote on these matters.

3. As a member of the public you are entitled to view or organization records. This includes our Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, member roster, meeting minutes (from this date forward), and financial records. Please send a request to view these records to the corporation secretary Candise Branum at hermione[dot]danger[at]gmail[dot]com. Please note that our Bylaws will be the only document posted on our blog http://www.esuscalaor.wordpress.com. If you wish to view any other record please contact Candise.

A defiant President Robert Mugabe yesterday vowed he would 'go to war' if he lost the presidential run-off due to take place in less than two weeks. Describing the opposition as 'traitors', he claimed Zimbabwe would never 'be lost' again. Speaking at the burial of a veteran of the independence war, Mugabe said he would never accept the Movement for Democratic Change taking over. 'It shall never happen … as long as I am alive and those who fought for the country are alive,' he said. 'We are prepared to fight for our country and to go to war for it.' The threat was seen as an angry response to the pressure mounting on the government from other African leaders over the regime's harassment of the MDC leadership and supporters in the run up to the 27 June election.

Yesterday, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai was arrested again and held for three hours as he tried to campaign in the countryside. There was also a stand-off between lawyers and police in Harare's high court before Tsvangirai's deputy, Tendai Biti, finally appeared before a judge. Earlier, according to opposition lawyer Lewis Uriri, police had told the judge, Justice Ben Hlatshwayo, that they did not think his order to produce Biti in court was genuine. A handcuffed Biti eventually told reporters that he was 'fine'. Police said he faced treason charges - which carries the death penalty - stemming from a document they claim was a blueprint for regime change.

He is also accused of spreading false information for releasing the opposition's own tally from the first vote in March. With the MDC leadership under constant harassment, voters being beaten and killed and what amounts to a curfew in some MDC rural strongholds, the likelihood of the 27 June run-off taking place in any meaningful way seems remote. Even if the 9,231 polling stations open, there is a shortage of officers prepared to risk monitoring them.

The number of international observers the government intends to let in remains unclear. Although the first of the 400 monitors for the Southern African Development Community have arrived, they have yet to be accredited by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, whose own status is weakening - a memo from police chief Faustino Mazango, leaked to the Zimbabwean Independent newspaper, ordered his officers to take charge of the 'whole voting process'. Police had been, he said, 'too docile' during the March poll. Rini Chipfunde, director of the leading independent monitoring group, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, said the authorities were creating an environment in which only police, soldiers and ruling party officials would be present at polling stations in rural areas. 'People will be too terrified to vote,' she said. 'Others may be bussed in by the ruling party to cast their ballots under the watchful eye of police officers.' Sources across Zimbabwe have reported an increasing number of roadblocks manned by militias and war veterans, effectively cutting people off and creating a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

James McGee, US ambassador in Harare, said 30,000 potential MDC voters had fled their constituencies. Mugabe has already ordered charities to stop work, leaving millions struggling to find food in the collapsed economy.

Start with a very clear idea of what you want to achieve with the money and stick to a plan. Tweaking your plan overmuch to suit every different fund you apply too will not work.

Read a lot of stuff first - start here with the Guide to Arts Funding in England

The big funds have strict criteria and painfully long forms and may not pay out money except to a registered charity. In this case, pick the funds that suit your aims and objectives and research a charity that might be able to facilitate. Specifically, offer to write a bid for funding for a charity that may want a music project you can provide and write it in such a way that you end up as the deliverer of the project as well.

There are small funds in existence, often with less criteria but with a small geographical remit. Local Authority Arts Officers are a source of information on this and some contact details can be got from the Voluntary Arts website

It is a good idea to contact the administrators of the fund in advance and discuss your application in advance. They know the common mistakes and can provide invaluable assistance. It always pays to take their advice.

Final tips: research, honesty, read everything, give them exactly what they ask for - no more, no less.

The simple mortgage on a home had been broken into many pieces (tranches — See Special Purpose

The simple mortgage on a home had been broken into many pieces (tranches --- See Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV)) each having characteristics of entities unto themselves. The term "borrower" was severed from the the obligation to pay. The term "lender" was severed from the risk of loss and the right to payment from the borrower. The term "investor" was severed from the actual ownership of any asset, except one deriving its value from conditions existing between a myriad of third parties, but which nonetheless carried with it a right to receive payments from many different entities and people, the "borrower" being just one of many.

In the Mortgage Meltdown context, the challenge is to prove the point that this was a fraudulent scheme, a Ponzi arrangement that was a financial pandemic. You get that information through discovery, but unless you know what you are looking for, you will merely come up with volumes of paper that do not, in and of themselves reveal all the points you need to make --- but they WILL lead to the discovery of admissible evidence (the gold standard of what is permitted in discovery) if you understand the scheme.

The nucleus of the scheme is the virtually unregulated creation of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which is a corporation formed by the investment banker to "own" certain rights to the loans and mortgages and perhaps other assets that were packaged for insertion into the SPV. The SPV issues securities and those securities are sold to investors with fake ratings and "assurances" and insurance that is falsely procured, but where the insurers or assurers were under common law, state law and/or federal law, required to perform their own due diligence, which they did not (in the mortgage meltdown). The proceeds of the sale of ABSs (CDO/CMO) go into the SPV.

The directors and officers of the SPV entity order the disbursement of those proceeds. (see INSURANCE in GARFIELD's GLOSSARY).

The recipients are a large undisclosed pack of feeding sharks all claiming plausible deniability as to inflated appraisals of the residential dwelling, the borrower's ability and willingness to pay, the underwriting standards applied (suspended because the lender was selling the risk rather than assuming it), and the inflated appraisal of the ABS (CDO/CMO) for all the same reasons --- direct financial incentives, coercion (give us the appraisal we want or we will never do business with you against and neither will anyone else) or even direct threats of challenges to professional licenses.

In order to get this information, you must find the name of the SPV, which is probably disclosed in filings with the SEC along with the auditor's opinion letter (see INSURANCE in GARFIELD's GLOSSARY). You might get lucky and find it just by asking. Then demand production of the articles of incorporation and the minutes, agreements, signed and correspondence between the SPV and third parties and between officers and directors of the SPV. The entire plan will be laid out for you as to that SPV and it might reveal, when you look at the actual insurance contracts, cross collateralization or guarantees between SPV's. Those cross agreements could be as simple as direct guarantees but will more likely take the form of hedge products like credit default swaps (You by mine and I'll by yours --- by express agreement, tacit agreement or collusion).

You will most likely find that once you perform a thorough analysis of the break-up ("Spreading") of the risk of loss, the actual cash income stream, the ownership of the note, the ownership of the security instrument (mortgage) and the ownership and source of payment for insurance and other contracts, that all roads converge on a single premise: this was a deal between the borrowers (collectively as co-borrowers) and the investors (collectively as co-investors). Everyone else was a middle man pretending to be NOT part of the transaction while they were collecting most of the proceeds, leaving the investor and the borrower hanging.

And there is no better place to start than with the insurance underwriting process --- getting copies of applications, investigations, analysis, correspondence etc. Combined with the filings with the SEC you are likely to find virtual admissions of the entire premise and theme of this entire blog. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOU SENDING ME THE RESULTS OF YOUR ENDEAVORS.

INSURANCE --- DEFINED

A promise of compensation for specific potential future losses in exchange for a periodic payment. Insurance is designed to protect the financial well-being of an individual, company or other entity in the case of unexpected loss. Some forms of insurance are required by law, while others are optional. Agreeing to the terms of an insurance policycreates a contract between the insured and the insurer. In exchange for payments from the insured (called premiums), the insurer agrees to pay the policy holder a sum of money upon the occurrence of a specific event. In most cases, the policy holder pays part of the loss (called the deductible), and the insurer pays the rest. IN FORECLOSURE OFFENSE AND DEFENSE, YOU WILL FIND ERRORS AND OMISSIONS POLICIES COVERING THE OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS OF THE INVESTMENT BANKING FIRM, THE SPV THAT ISSUED THE ASBs, THE RATING AGENCY FOR THE ASB (CMO/CDO), THE LENDER, THE MORTGAGE BROKER, THE REAL ESTATE AGENT, ETC. YOU WILL FIND MALPRACTICE INSURANCE FOR THE AUDITORS OF THE SAME ENTITIES WHICH RESULTED IN FALSE REPRESENTATIONS CONCERNING THE FINANCIAL CONDITION OF THE ENTITY. YOU WILL FIND LOSS COVERAGE FOR DELINQUENCY, DEFAULT OR NON-PAYMENT THAT MAY INURE TO THE BENEFIT OF THE BORROWER. By joining the borrower and the investor as victims in the fraudulent Ponzi scheme creating money supply with smoke and mirrors, it may be argued that the insurance premiums were paid by and equitably owned by the borrower and/or the investor.

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work with five struggling companies and to review the files

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work with five struggling companies and to review the files of a dozen others. These companies are in serious financial distress and there are about 10 recurring pitfalls that all good mature market experts need to avoid.

                Here are the lessons:

1. Invest in sales and marketing – treat sales and marketing expenditures as an investment. These expenditures are not costs; they are investments that yield returns. Many of the struggling companies simply did not invest enough in sales and marketing.

2. Insist on C-suite participation – if you are not in the C-suite or do not have participation from someone who is, watch out. Sales and marketing was often way down on the list of priorities for top management in these companies. It surprises me how many times top management didn’t really know what was going on in sales and marketing and consequently had no feel for their prospective customers.

3. Befriend your CFO – she is the one watching the store and controlling the purse strings. You want to be sure she knows everything she should know.

4. Know your numbers – make a list of key indicators, statistics on responses to your sales and marketing program you should watch. Don’t try to boil it down to four or five. That is great management theory but the reality is that inspiring retirees to act is fairly complicated stuff and doesn’t often fit in with the four to five key indicators management dreams are made of.

Pay particular attention to any that are down. Question why. Is it a trend? Not sure? Assume it is and fix it. Many of the ‘chief marketing officers’ of these distressed companies seemed surprised to be in such sad shape. Disappointed, yes. Frustrated, of course. Surprised, no excuse.

5. Innovate – if you are doing things the same way you did them 18 months ago, it is time to take a fresh look and adopt a fresh perspective. Many of these managers were doing things the same way they always did because “they worked.” I’d argue that retirees experience more change faster than any other age group, save children under the age of four. You need to keep up with them.

6. Don’t rest on your laurels, a little paranoia goes a long way – in hindsight, many people in these companies realize that they ignored the telltale signs that something was rotten in the state of Denmark. Somebody is out to get you – your competitors who covet your customers and your customers who would rather keep their money ‘thank you very much’ than give it to you.

7. More revenue cures all ills – you would be surprised at how many management teams try to reduce their way to financial success. While cost control and investing your sales and marketing dollars wisely are requirements, don’t ever forget that more revenue can make everything better.

8. Make getting in the helicopter a priority – many leaders in these distressed businesses couldn’t see the forest for the trees or couldn’t see the trees for the forest. Don’t let this happen. Find time in your schedule every week to fly your helicopter up and down. You want to be considering potential courses of action from at least four perspectives: narrowly, broadly, within short time frames, and over the distant horizon. Balancing these perspectives leads to short and long term success. Ignore any at your peril.

9. Adhere to Zyman’s Rule – Sergio Zyman of CocaCola (and, yes, New Coke) fame, instructs us that if your sales and marketing program isn’t impelling people to act now it is very unlikely to impel them to act in the future. Very few sales and marketing programs have a cumulative impact that yields sales somewhere down the road. If it isn’t working now, it probably isn’t going to get any better with age. The ranks of these distressed businesses are filled with people who are still waiting for their sales and marketing programs to “kick in.”

10. Be nimble – few of these managers of distressed businesses had prepared to change course if something didn’t work. They simply were unprepared to shift resources, strategy or direction. As marketing leaders, we should focus as much on being prepared to respond if we need to shift as we do on executing the current plan.

This may sound a bit preachy. If so, I apologize but I don’t want to be working to find a financial solution for your company any time soon.

BESA elections are coming up! Please nominate yourself or others for officer positions by emailing B

BESA elections are coming up! Please nominate yourself or others for officer positions by emailing BESA. There are seven officer positions available. The descriptions below are subject to change, according to how the leadership wants to run the organization. All positions assist with orientation in the fall and recruitment weekend in the winter. All positions but the President and Social Chair will choose or create a BESA event to organize/run at the first/second meeting. Committees may be established to help with specific events, like for ordering T-shirts, camping trips, and other extracurricular activities.

Continue reading for description of officer duties.

President

The president is responsible for organizing BESA meetings, delegating tasks, and the general execution of BESA events and activities. Additionally, the president must coordinate BESA efforts in helping with recruitment weekend and fall orientation. Fall orientation responsibilities include organizing track-specific discussion sections where new students can obtain information from graduate students currently in labs in their tracks of interest.

Vice President

The VP is responsible for assisting the president in executing BESA events and activities. The VP is also charged with ensuring that relevant BESA information is updated on the BESA website and/or the BME website. The VP is in charge of T-shirts from the year before, or with ordering new T-shirts (either by their design or a design contest).

Treasurer

The treasurer is responsible for overseeing BESA’s budget, reimbursing BESA members for food and other BESA-event related items, and maintaining BESA’s financial accounts. This involves coordinating with Christal and maintaining BESA’s private checking account. The treasurer is also responsible for running the candy bin of the 3rd floor gathering space (or finding someone else to do it).

Secretary

The secretary is responsible for writing meeting minutes and distributing them to BESA members.

IM Sports Chair

The sports chair is responsible for organizing sports teams according to the student needs each quarter. This involves determining which sports to play, gathering player information, registering the teams, and organizing players for the games. The sports chair has the option of re-ordering old athletic T-shirts or making new ones (either by their design or a design contest).

Social Chair

The social chair is responsible for organizing BESA lunches and other social events, and for coordinating with BMES (BME undergrad group). During the fall, winter, and spring, ~2 lunches per quarter are expected. Lunch organization involves acquiring funds from the Dean Witter fund if applicable, ordering and providing the food, reserving the room, notifying the grad students and faculty, obtaining RSVPs, cleanup, and organizing volunteers to get this all done.

Community Service Chair

The community service chair is responsible for coordinating the community service activities of BESA. This includes relaying information on service opportunities from the GSA Community Service Committee to the BME graduate student population, and organizing food and clothing drives. At least one organized BMEGG volunteer opportunity per quarter is expected.

If I had to move from my small southern town of Creeks Bend, located three miles south of No Where and just east of The Middle of Nothing, I would move to Oklahoma City. I have lived there in the past and nothing compares to it. I have lived on both coasts and many places in between, but if I had to give up Creeks Bend, I would move directly to Oklahoma City and never leave. There are so many reasons I know Oklahoma City is the best place to live, next to my dinky little town where I am related to 90 percent of the residents and it isn't even on a map...To read more, visit http://www.helium.com/items/1065516-what-is-the-best-town-to-live-in

It should have been a fairly local news story…however, a mayor from a fairly la

It should have been a fairly local news story...however, a mayor from a fairly large metropolitan city in America who is being accused of felony charges of perjury and other assorted charges; throw in some secret behind the scene deal, allegedly made with lawyers regarding the officers who had recordings showing alleged proof of his salacious, sexual text messages between him and his alleged former (female) chief of staff; as well as, a formal legal proceedings (initiated by the City Council and signed into motion by Govenor Granholm) trying to forcibly remove him from office...and you have a national news story worthy of a tabloid newspaper. Still, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is basically saying, Heck No...I won't Go.

His basic legal argument is that the council doesn't have legal standing to remove him from office because he says the law states that the only legal grounds a council has to remove him is a felony conviction or for a lack of qualifications.

So, when the council formally asked the Governor to remove Kilpatrick from office and went through the formalities....Mayor Kilpatrick vetoed the Council's vote requesting his ouster by Governor Granholm. Wow!!! There is some fancy footwork going on.

No, I won't leave office...because I haven't been "convicted of a felony" even though i am being charged with felony charges...i haven't been convicted yet...therefore...i don't have to leave office (yet).

Can you imagine having to try to work together effectively to run a city as large as Detroit with such opposite agenda's? Is this fair to the citizen's of Detroit to have this kind of standoff going on in their city's governing body? I wonder how long of a process this will take, to get a decision that is definate in whether he will be allowed to stay or forced out of office.

Some of the allegations are downright embarassing. His wife appears to be still standing behind him. After all, if the texts truly represent that he had an ongoing relationship with his female former chief of staff...that is damaging to a marriage and will take some major time and energy to repair (if the people involved are truly repentent for their actions...which doesn't appear to be the case based on this ongoing legal defiance).

Then you get into the legal stuff and it would seem that his professional hands would be bound so tight that he would not be able to perform his duties as Mayor. Is he in denial about the situation; or, is it just a delaying technique? If he is going to end up removed...who is paying for all of this legal wrangling...are our tax dollars going into this legal battle? Is there such a thing as being sued for political malpractice? If so, this situation seems to invite such a suit. Do you think Mayor Kilpatrick should stay or go?
