I am having just a terrific week in terms of software gadgetry. Since Sunday night I’ve spent

I am having just a terrific week in terms of software gadgetry. Since Sunday night I've spent long hours at both work and home computers, tweaking and adjusting their gurgling innards like I'm told bolder men sometimes labor on cars. It soothes me, and I mean that with complete seriousness. The holy trinity of ad-aware, CCleaner, and ye olde Defrag proffer real, tactile pleasure to the technophile in me, and I am all too happy to accept the invitation and lose hours of my life rearranging system files and desktop formats until everything is just so.

If I don't change my wallpapers at least once a month I begin to feel dirty. Am I alone in this?

Since the summer began, I've been trying to use my fandom for GTD, lifehacking, and simplicity to change the way I put my life together. This has meant a lot of experimentation, a lot of reading, and a couple of gems that have made a genuine difference. I'm a believer in open source applications as a means to focusing myself, streamlining my activities, and making me do things right. While putting the literally thousands of options out there to the test has been extremely rewarding, and I'm only just now narrowing my system down to the absolute essentials. Here's my new favourites:

Evernote is my new crush, and it is a doozy. The program runs as both a background application that lives in windows' quick tray and as a firefox extension, with effortless interactivity between the two. Even better, signing up grants you an online account with 40mb of storage per month, which is plenty for storing notes and low-res images, and the program's extremely slick interface allows for easy and fast synching of all your data between different machines. Which doesn't make Evernote sound at all special or worthwhile, does it? I've been using Google Notebooks to keep track of important items for the last couple of months, but that never felt intuitive or particularly useful - what's the point of saving snippets of data when I've got a million powerful means to simply point myself at the info I need online? With pages bagged and tagged in reader, delicious, stumble, and the almighty google, why keep hard copies anymore?

Besides the aforementioned extreme slickness with which Evernote allows one to clip and store anything your computer can see, Evernote shames pretty much every other bookmarking/note-taking service I've experimented with in terms of organization and searchability. The program somehow manages to index words inside of image files, something I haven't seen outside of Google. This not only makes me giddy, it cuts down on the tagging I need to do to find my stuff, a great blessing for something who despises frequent switching from mouse to keyboard and back again. The organization for finding stuff is elegant and customizable, with some of the most novel and useful options I've seen in a program. Searching by tags and keywords are, of course, possible and fluent, but Evernote also offers a time line view that makes so much sense it's a wonder it hasn't been used more before now. An attributes index fleshes out the options with a simple expanding list of semantic qualities automatically applied to incoming docs, so if you can sincerely remember nothing about that thing you're trying to find except that it was created some time before this week and it had an image in it, Evernote's got you covered.

Even better, this handy little program gives pda-less troglodytes such as myself a chance to utilize the mobile web in a way that's actually meaningful (I'm looking at you, Google Maps, how dare you not work with my razer, grr). Notes and pictures can be text messaged to an email address that Evernote sets up and manages for you, making it astonishingly easy to compile data while afk, so to speak. It works extremely well, and its nice to have a way to get to my phone pictures without having to be eviscerated by Rogers's idiotic website. More than that, I'm glad to have a simple system that can store my notes and rich media quickly and automatically across multiple locations, not just for the ease of taking it with me, but for the redundancy of it protecting me from losing my stuff.

Five bucks a month or forty five a year gets you vastly increased storage, premium support, and the other niceties that always attend such offers. This might, however be the first time I consider taking a developer up on the offer.

Then there's Objectdock, a little app for organizing and launching programs and folders I've used to replace the unwieldy and hideous Vista sidebar. And I can hear the tremulous screeches of "It looks like Mac!" already, which is a conversation for another day. Needless to say, I can customize and rid myself of this thing if I choose. And, you know, actually maximize things. Ahem.

Now, I'll admit that I'm a sucker for good design, which Objectdock offers in droves. Having a set of large, attractive icons at my fingertips whenever I mouse to the edge of the screen relieves some part of me, deep down, that never enjoyed the uncustomizable and eye-scrunching task of manipulating the quicktray, nor found any sense in having a quicklaunch bar for shortcuts as well. And yes, I understand the theory behind each. It still doesn't make sense from a usability standpoint, and the diaspora of functionally identical shortcuts is so commonplace I wouldn't be surprised if you yourself have two or thee or four shortcuts to the same places spread across the windows GUI for no good reason. It is jarring, and I'm all about simplicity.

Aside from the effortless ability to drag and drop shortcuts into the completely tweakable bar, Objectdock has a thriving open source community offering "docklets" for free. This is what elevates the app from a shiny quicktray replacement to a potent tool that is also, of course, very shiny. Being able to search Google, consult a 5 day local forecast, open my docs, open my computer, use calculator and notepad at the flick of the wrist is a delight, and can be done at any time regardless of what you're otherwise immersed in. It's taking a bit of effort to train my brain to use the dock instead of the standard, less elegant Windows tools, but it's coming along well.

This is how my work desktop looks right now, isn't it beautiful?

(RocketDock logo)

RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha blended application launcher. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organization. With each item completely customizable there is no end to what you can add and launch from the dock.

So, yes, basically.. RocketDock is like ObjectDock, only difference is RocketDock is fully free, not shareware. As always, I'm trying it out, because I obviously just love installing new junks on this laptop and eventually uninstalling them when that day comes that I realize I don't really need it.

------------------

01 Download and installation

------------------

I got my copy from their site, Rocketdock.com, under the Downloads section. Get the latest version, which is 1.3.5 as of this writing. Once you're done downloading, double click on the installer file to install the application.

The whole installation process shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

------------------

02 Screenshots

------------------

The dock itself. You can change the themes - there are lots of them available for download from the site.

Dock settings window

------------------

03 Impression/Verdict

------------------

First impression: It looked pretty impressive when I was watching that video on their site. Although I wasn't quite as dumbfounded like I was when I stumbled upon ObjectDock, I'd still say that it is a good enough alternative for the mentioned shareware.

What do I think??

If you've tried ObjectDock before and dropped it after a few months of use, you might end up dropping this too, seeing as I don't think it is in anyway different from the shareware ObjectDock that's available for download. It's still the same dock, the same icons, the same hovering and animation.

What's good in it then?

I'd say it's the freeware part that makes it an interesting choice. If you're an advocate of the use of open source software, or if you're simply not willing to risk your neck when using cracked versions of proprietary software, this one will be a worthy try. It's not much different, but still it's free - it's like buying a less expensive PC computer than a Mac that can do just about the same things; that's if you don't care about brands and appearance.

---------------------------------

One of the best ways to make your desktop look nice is to keep it clean of icons. I have one Icon on my Desktop, and it's the recycling bin. How do I keep my desktop clean? you ask. A combination of a dock for icons and Enso Launcher help me to keep it empty of clutter. You are probably familiar with docks, Macs come with them. A Dock, is just a tray that sits on your desktop and holds icons, of programs that you use. To add a Program to the dock all you have to do is drag and drop. My two favorite Dock programs are ObjectDock

and RocketDock,

I like them for their simplicity and style. Although today I did download Orbit Dock, to try it looks interesting. Lets talk about this sweet program called Enso Launcher. Basically this allows you to launch programs by typing the program name. You can assign any program to it, search from several different search engines, and I believe you can assign web site addresses to it. It's simple as well, you just hold caps lock and type open (insert program name here), and it opens it! To assign a program to Enso, you hold caps lock and type learn as open. Here is the Enso Launcher tutorial. I find Enso way more useful than I thought it would be. So there are some ways to avoid the clutter that will turn your desktop into a mess.

Found this cool little application today called Object Dock. Its pretty rad and with it I was able to declutter my desktop quite nicely. One of the things I've missed since I've had to use a Windows computer this past month or so (I still have Linux loaded on my laptop but my wife uses it most of the time) has been the ability to load my most used app shortcut icons into an autohide panel with GNOME. I guess its similar to the Mac dock, but at any rate I got to indulge my OCD no icons on the desktop fetish. But Windows doesn't come with that degree of customizability and I was stuck with the big fat taskbar and icons all over the damn place.

Until I got Object Dock. With it, I've been able to keep my taskbar hidden and have all my relevant shortcuts ( My Computer, My Documents, Winamp, Thunderbird, the Recycle Bin, Firefox and My Pictures) along with the clock, calendar, start menu, open windows list and a weather forecast applet-all in a nifty little animated pop up dock pretty much just like I had while running Linux. The only problem I've run into was with installing a system info applet, and trying to add a bitchen VU meter to it. I'm sure eventually I'll get it figured out.

So, other than that things are going pretty well. My parole officer stopped by today and played Mahjonng, or however that asian tile game is spelled, on my laptop for awhile and asked me if I'd help her pick out a new computer. She's never owned one before and when I asked her if she had any idea of what she wanted she said "No, just as long as it comes with that tile game". Part of me really wants to point her in the direction of one of those Dell Inspirons that comes pre loaded with Ubuntu...but I'm thinking maybe that wouldn't be the best thing eventhough Ubuntu pretty much works right out of the box. Unfortunately, I'm hardly a hardware expert since most of my computers have been old scrapyard numbers with antiquated hardware-so I'm not quite up on what's available for just general useage. I asked my P.O. what she wanted to use her computer for and she said playing music, watching movies, email and the internets. So I doubt she's going to need like a massively high end video card, a quad core processor and four GB of RAM. I'll try to look around the intarweb and see what I can find for her. I want to find her something good, cause after all she's my parole officer. I guess I know how those food testers for kings must have felt back in the feudal days.

Yeah, the incredibly high stress level me and my wife have been dealing with has definately let up a good bit. Of course, her surgery is still next week but the initial shock of her dysplasia diagnosis has abated. I love her so much and I wish she didn't have to go through all of this but at least she won't be going through it alone.

Well, another post comes to an end. As Walter Cronkite used to say "...and that's the way it was"

I know that the title is a little far fetched - but thanks to the freeware called ObjectDock, I have now transformed the desktop of my Windows Vista almost to a desktop of a Mac machine. You can see the screen-shot below:

It's a very lightweight software, and runs fantastically in Vista. Even though I am getting some "windows explorer stopped responding" messages, but I am yet to attribute the issue to this software. And even if it is the cause of those errors, I am sure sooner or later a patch will come off Microsoft that will fix it up. For the time being let me just enjoy the nice software.

I'm typing this instead of my Religious Studies paper... Sorry Professor Ng :-)

So, a couple of weeks ago i was sitting around wishing that Vista had a dock like Mac OS. I decided to see if it existed as a hack or something, and apparently it does. There are two programs that I know of. One is called RocketDock and the other is ObjectDock. I decided to try both. Immediately I knew that RocketDock wasn't for me. There's nothing wrong with it an I suggest you try it. It just wasn't for me. ObjectDock, however, caught my eye right away.

ObjectDock has allowed me to clean off my desktop. Which has always been an issue with me. Where do I keep stuff I need to remember currently? How do I have easy access without too many shortcuts to my school files? Sadly, the non-plus version of ObjectDock doesn't allow you to have tabs or multiple docks, but it almost completely succeeded at what I wanted it for. Then, I shelled out for the plus version and was just giddy ^_^ Here's my desk top:

*Sorry couldn't get the shot without using the on screen keyboard. The Macbook Pro supposed print screen sequence of keys don't work for me. I'll figure it out eventually. As you can see there's a normal dock on the bottom of the screen. Then on the left and on the top I have two hidden docks with tabs. The one on top has a tab for each of my classes and one for school miscellaneous. The one on the left has things I would normally have cluttering up my desktop. While the one on the bottom has items that I use all of the time.

A great feature I found was the ability to make fly out menus. So for Open Office, Microsoft Office, my music players, chat programs, and The Sims [1, 2 and Castaway Stories] I made fly out menus. It allows you to have them all in one place without them being all over the place.

This week in the life of Ashley:

I applied for the new job at PSU. It's called TLA [Technology Learning Assistant]. It's a program where the students tutor the faculty on how to use various forms of technology. I was surprised to get an email asking for a meeting, but I did. I met with Jeff this past Friday, nice guy, about it. I thought it was an interview, but I apparently already had the job. I suppose if I had come off really bad he would have kicked me out. He told me about the position, which for the first semester you do it is worth one credit. Then subsequent semesters are for wage. I can't, however, start until the fall, because since the first time around it's for credit you have to theoretically take the "class" which is only offered fall and spring.

I have two papers and a final this week, but it's the last week of class :-) yay! The one paper is on the book Hojoki: Visions of a Torn World for Religious Studies [the one I'm not doing right now] and the second is on physician assisted suicide for my ethics class. My final is in Sociology. I decided to take it this week instead of waiting until finals week. I hope that was a good idea. Tomorrow I go see the plastic surgeon again about my back. Hopefully, he'll agree that the breast reduction is the best idea as opposed to telling me to lose 50lbs and come back later like last time or at least give me some ideas on how to lose 50lbs without starving myself *crosses fingers*.

I've finally decided on the tattoo that I want. It took me about 5 years to actually decide that I want a tattoo, and an additional 4 to decide what I want. So at this rate I should have it by the year 2011. Edit: I had figured out what I wanted then found out that it was design based off of someone else's tattoo which they made into a design for one of their band's CDs. Well I still have 3 years to find a parlor ;-)
