I can remember when the Lad was born, we were good little citizens back then and had him in nursery care by 5 months so that we might meet our 'state-dictated-economic obligations' ... of course we took him back out after a year and a half and started to deal with our own 'anti-state-family-orientated obligations' and began looking after him ourselves only returning him to part-time nursery for the year before he started school.

It's a curious thing, early nursery care, you put your children into nursery so that you can keep working and in order to do that you take ALL the money your employer PAYS YOU and give it to a nursery and PAY THEM to look after YOUR children. 

Why? 

I don't know either ... but it took us a year and a half to figure it out.

So, back into the system we go.

The school system starts with half days, and aside from being pushed to the ground by some wee lassie in his class, it seems to have gone ok.  As it's half days until the September break he's home already, and knackered.  Oh! and with there only being three Primary 1's, two of which are boys, I think I know which one it was that pushed the Lad to the ground ...

I suppose that now that I have a child in the education system I have to actually start considering education policy in a bit more depth rather than just using it as a stick with which to beat the Labour Party ... give it another year and I'll be using it as a stick with which to beat the SNP.  They're Teflon coated until then as far as I'm concerned ... policy implementation isn't instant, so they get a couple of years gratis in my opinion.

Of course it's all changed since I was a lad, apparently they do something called 'active learning' instead of actual learning ... seemingly they don't have desks anymore, which kind of beggars the question where they sit to do things like writing and maths.  Of course, the question itself might be the answer to the question employers keep asking, "why can't anyone read, write or count anymore?".

I think this may be a subject I come back to, as to my opening question, the teacher informs us that the children might be a bit thirsty since the heating is stuck on FULL ...

I love the hues, the simplicity, and the playfulness of the prints.  There are so many to choose from on Etsy - I had to just commit.  I have also committed to fabric scheme for curtains, crib skirt, and the other plush things for the nursery - it is called Surf and Sand by Marcus Fabrics .  I think it could be boy or girl - I'm thinking the dots for the curtains and plain teal for a small rocker I have that will be recovered. I think the star / flower fabric for the crib skirt.   Walls in the nursery will be a light blue.  I showed Matt the fabric and he really liked it too so now I just need to figure out how much and make an order!

I also have a crib in mind - the Lollipop Crib - it's available at Baby Depot in Kitchener. It has the simple lines I like and converts to a bed.  Has anyone tried this crib?  Any feedback?  I have not found any reviews - not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing...  I have yet to see it in person - I'm planning a trip to the store in early September.  

I looked at Sears - the only place in Stratford that sells cribs and the ones on display were very poor quality - wobbly, fake wood, scratched easily etc.  I hope the Lollipop is ok.

Fast forward to today, where she is currently about 37 weeks pregnant (yup, expecting any day now!!) We've been planning on doing her maternity photosession for the past two months...but things kept coming up. Last weekend, we were finally able to meet up and grab a few shots of the lucky couple. Fortunately, she was still pregnant but very, very expecting.

We started at their home in Rowland Heights, in the nursery room that Flo and Nelson had lovingly put together in anticipation of their baby daughter. From there, we rushed over to Newport Pier to finish up. During their engagement session last year, we re-located to the beach but were a little too late and missed the sunset. Not wanting to repeat that mistake, we left the house with plenty of time to spare.

I had a great time hanging out with Flo and Nel. Thank you guys for sharing this part of your lives with me! I can't wait to meet Isabella!

I headed off to the nautilus room and was pleasantly surprised to see it was ladies hour and there were no overexerting grunters.  And as a bonus the machines were all set for reasonable weights and seat heights.  Anytime someone walked into the area I looked up to see if it was nursery personal looking for me.  To my surprise no one came.  After a short workout I went to the nursery window in a very catlike clinging-to-the-wall fashion so he wouldn't see me but I could check on him.  I certainly couldn't hear him which was a good sign.  The last time you could hear him when you got within 100 feet of the nursery.  I peeked, and he was outside playing.  Great - now I can head to the track.

I started walking and did a few laps.  I was mentally beating myself up for an altercation I had with my daughter that morning before school and felt a little physical abuse might go hand in hand.  By that I mean jogging.  If anyone knows me, they know I don't jog.  I don't run.  The only time I run is when I used to play softball and that was pretty short distances.  Once in my life did I jog for "pleasure" and it turned out I was pregnant with my son and didn't know it yet (like maybe 10 days pregnant.)  And NO, I am not pregnant, not possible, not even close.  But today I ran.  Then I got tired and walked, then I ran again.  After a cool down I went to check on the boy again and he was still outside.  You'll never guess what I did next.

Do you remember that coach you had in high school that made you run "suicides" or "zigzags" in the gym?  I channeled him into the room and ran 2 sets of suicides.  It actually felt good.  Like I said, small distances.  It was kind of fun and I think I'm going to add it to my routine, see how many I can build up to, assuming I don't blow out my knees.

Anyway, now I was totally finished, no question.  I went to get Little Man and he saw me peek into the window and exploded into sobs.  Not really sobs, more like screams.  So sad.  They said  he cried quite a bit when I left but was happy outside on the playground.  Then they asked me what size shoes he wears.  I told them 9 even though they are really 9 1/2.  He's 19 months and wears 9 1/2.  They thought his shoes were way to big which was why he was falling a lot, but then checked and felt his toe 1/2 inch from the end.  "He's going to be tall.  His feet are huge!"  They went on and on.  Yes, yes, I am fully aware of all these facts, but thanks for noticing.  He falls a lot because he has permanent snowshoes attached to his ankles.  But we took a few big foot baby steps today and everyone survived.

I’m at that point again. It’s possible it started with the BGF’s plan to move to Virginia and the suggestion that I come along, too. It’s also possible that the whole discussion around whether or not my job is going full-time has me really wondering if this current career is something I want to commit to. Regardless of how it began, I found myself sitting at work this morning looking through job announcements on various websites in one tab, while a second tab is opened to a University site that might have a degree I want, and a third tab is google-ing apartments in another city. On occasion I’ve had to open a fourth tab to maps, because I need to know geographically where I might be. You think I’m kidding—no way. I’ll prove it:



This little episode has me thinking that I may just be antsy. I’m a bit tired of living in this town doing basically the same things I’ve done for the past four years. I know what’s keeping me here, though; it’s the paper. Okay, the paper and the BGF, but she’s a good reason to stay. The paper is NOT a good reason. I’m wimping out, to be honest. I’m scared to write the paper because I’m pretty sure it’s going to be complete crap and my committee will want me to change so much that it’s going to be completely overwhelming and require mounds of new research. But not finishing it would be the dumbest damn thing I have ever done in my life.

So, in truth, I need help. I need the people who know me, who read this on occasion and either see me on a regular basis or can call me, to literally bug the shit out of me to finish this paper. The BGF is very good at this, but I’ve been ignoring her. I get agitated every time she brings it up and start chewing on my nails and acting freaky, or getting pissed off, and she stops. My father is also very good at this, but he doesn’t read this and I don’t want anyone to tell him, because I don’t really want him to call me and bug me about it. It makes me want to kick him, and that’s just not very nice. Besides, after 27 years I’m starting to like him and I don’t want to screw that up.

The end result of bugging me to finish the paper will be that I can leave this place. Yep. Gone. No more. I don't hate it here, but I'm ready for some new scenery. And is it really too much to ask to have a Super Target? I mean, really....
