What's so special about this photograph ?

The picture depicts a briyani in a hotbox. What's a briyani ? Please refer wikipedia for more.

Chennai is a city with a plethora of briyani shops. This is the first shop i have seen where it's served in a hot box to keep it warm till you complete the meal. What's so nice is the fact that this shop is a roadside briyani seller with a pricing of US $ .5 or Rs 25 for the above serving.

The shops was quite clean by standards of briyani shops across chennai. The attendant was quite polite and respectful to the customer. It's a rareity in eateries like these . The icing on the cake was a pack of "after meals" i received along with the tooth pick.

Normally, i am quite conscious about dining in shops of this short. For once i felt really happy and vowed to return to the shop if i get another chance. See the picture of the shop below.

I am amazed by the rustic intelligence and marketing nuance applied here. these are learnings for me and you

a) your offering should be able to create awe when compared to competitors(differentiators).

b) the core offering should be good and well supported by the environmental factors(packaging)

c) The customer should be able to sense value immediately for the offering

Before I get too carried away this morning I want to give props to a fellow (or sister as the case

Before I get too carried away this morning I want to give props to a fellow (or sister as the case may be) blogger Madamab who also loves satire and like me seems to be able to sit on ice cream and tell what flavor it is. (That means I'm a smart-ass and sorry Madamab I guess I just called you one too but I meant it in the most sincere and admiring way!)

There is a link to her latest below. Too funny! Here's a favorite line or two of mine from this piece. Just to give you a little taste and whet your appetites!

BRAZILE [faux-fended]: For Pete's sake, Hillary, what the hell am I doing here? I'm neutral! How could I be guilty? Don't you know I work for CNN?

[Brief pause]

ALL except BRAZILE: HAHAHAHAHA! [BRAZILE glares at everyone, then slowly breaks into a grin and laughs along with them]

HILLARY [wiping her eyes]: Whew! Thanks for the laugh, Donna. That really broke the ice! [returning to seriousness] Okay, are we ready to get down to business?

I LOVE IT! And then there's this:

OBAMA [offended]: Who, me? Are you kidding? I AM the Democratic Party! I moved the DNC to Chicago! I'm Obama for America! And besides, everyone loves me. Yes, I can!

HILLARY [unable to keep silent]: Oh, for god's sake, Barack, you don't believe your own propaganda, do you? Save it for your deluded worshipers in the blogosphere!

AXELROD [aside to Obama]: Yeah, Barack. I told you that most of those [makes air quotes with his hands] "anonymous supporters" work for me anyway.

http://oohnuance.blogspot.com/2008/07/who-killed-ole-yeller-play-in-one.html

Sigh! If only we would get to hear Hillary REALLY SAY THIS TO BARKY! Do yourself a favor and check out the rest of the play. Unlike me, Madamab seems to know how to spin a yarn AND keep it short and sweet. I think yours truly could learn a thing or two about that!

This one is quite a hoot as well. I'll restrict myself to one quote just because I loved it so much I can't NOT quote it!

BOLTEN [jumping in]: Yes, sir, it sure is! Anyway, what the Vice President is saying, is that the Democrats nominated the one guy who couldn't win this year. The Democratic base doesn't like him, and he's managed to piss off a lot of people so much that they started their own movement.

BUSH: Oh yeah - that PUMA stuff. Can you believe that some morons think those PUMA idiots are Republicans? We wouldn't stand for that shit in our house, would we Turd Blossom?

[KKKARL ROVE steps out from behind a curtain.]

ROVE: No, we sure wouldn't. The idiots in our party wanted Huckabee. We put a stop to that crap right away.

I agree with Dick. The Democratic Party won't win the White House in November. We've got our ads all ready to go - we're just waiting in case the Democrats come to their senses and nominate Hillary.

HAHAHAHA!!! Here's the link to the rest. Enjoy!

http://oohnuance.blogspot.com/2008/07/what-about-bush-play-in-one-final-act.html

OOOPS!!! MUST STOP! COFFEE CUP EMPTY! MUST REFILL!

OK! Emergency avoided! Wheew!

Now that I've got that under control I'll get back to the point. You will not hear this in the media. You won't hear it said in public unless it is spoken in hushed wispers. You won't hear it from the DNC that I absolutely assure you! Having said that I'm going to say what most of us, especially those of us who are PUMAS already know. THIS IS NOT OVER YET!

The Denver Group http://thedenvergroup.blogspot.com/ and PUMAPAC http://blog.pumapac.org/ as well as many other groups are doing everything they can to get Hillary the respect she deserves in Denver by demanding that her name be on the ballot and the traditional Roll Call takes place. If you can do anything to help in any of these efforts please do so. I will also say that if they DON'T GIVE HILLARY THE RESPECT SHE DESERVES AND HAS EARNED there will be a hefty price to pay! We Hillarycrats won't riot or burn the city or anything as unseemly and immature as that.

No, instead we will systematicly vote out every Democrat who did not support Hillary, Fair Reflection, the will of the people and the core principals of the Democratic Party! Every Democrat who tried to gloss over the inconvienent reality of the situation and instead tried to force this faux-unity crap down our throats all the while recieving what amounts to the political version of a blowjob (cabinet positions, fundraising ect.) in exchange for their loyalty to the standard bearer of the "New Marxocratic, ooops, I mean Democratic Party"

In addition I feel fairly confident that Hillary will take the MI/FL decision to the credentials committee regardless because, hang on Obamabots if you're listening, because IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO! Yup! That's right! Hillary will stand up for those voters who did their civic duty (Some Obama supporters may not know about this as Civics is unforunately no longer taught in school.) and voted their concience for President for which their "reward" was being told that their vote didn't count or at least didn't count for as much as everybody else's votes and oh, by the way since one candidate removed himself from the ballot the RBC decided that the votes that were cast should be altered to reflect votes that weren't cast! This has to be the most undemocratic, uninspired, and frankly the most unintelligent decisions the party has ever made!

I think Hillary will fight for them as she has always fought for all of us. I think she will fight for their rights because in spite of all the heat she has taken for it, Hillary has always fought for what is right and fighting for Florida and Michigan to be treated fairly and with respect is what is right.

So for all those unity pushers who think they can threaten us or smooth us over or better yet try to ignore us think again sweeties, it aint over till it's over! You cannot win votes with the above mentioned tactics. In fact you are doing the exact opposite. More of us than before say we won't vote Obama and our numbers continue to grow fueled by his arrogance and that of his supporters. If you think you can win without us then you truly are delusional. There are 18 million of us who know your guy is a fraud, an empty suit, in short a loser.

Come to your senses people! Delegates! Abort this fary-tale with no chance of fruition that is the Obama Campaign! Back away from the cool-ade before it's too late! You're country needs you to do the right thing! Get Hillary Clinton nominated and elected! She can win! We need her! With Obama we are doomed!

PUMAS know this and they are working behind the scenes and PUMAS are not republicans I assure you. PUMAS are the core of the party, the people who vote and fight to protect us all! PUMAS are smart enough to know that advertising is usually created to attract and distract as in make you think this new thing is just what you need and don't look at this it's a work in progress you know, unfinished and all that. Hey looky over here instead!

PUMAS know real meat (substance) when they see it! Clinton has plenty of subtance and the fortitude to stand when others fall back. (FISA anyone?) She's the real deal and if she's not the nominee the party will regret it. Obama will lose and we will have 4 more years of GOP in the Whitehouse. NOT what I or any other democrat wants but at least the devil we know is better than the devil we don't. I shudder to think about an Obama presidency. What that would do to our country, how many of our rights would he pander away for his own agenda? Would this country even be recognizable? I doubt it. We'd all be wearing brown shirts and jack boots in no time.

PUMAS UNITE! CAST OUT THE OBAMANITES!

In the past week I have been very critical of Barack's so-called rush to the center. I have been as guilty as others of charging him with changing positions and retreating from (my) cherished views. However a look at his career shows that many of the relatively conservative positions he has taken lately are well embedded in his political and social history. He has never been an absolutist on abortion, capital punishment or even gun control.

I was going to title this piece something like, "Projecting on a not so blank screen," but someone beat me to it --- Barack Obama!! In his book, "The Audacity of Hope" he wrote, long ago, "I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views."

Like infatuated teenagers, many of us have projected our philosophies or political views on him without looking at him closely, readily dismissing the significance here and there of positions with which we may disagree. When lovers break up they may castigate themselves, saying, "I knew that" or "I should have known." But we don't have that luxury. We have to rethink what it is we are looking for. We have to rediscover what "change" means.

Change is not merely substituting one set of positions for another but redefining how politics is played. If we look closely at the positions for which we have been chastising Obama we will discover that his positions are not black or white but nuanced. Nuance is something new on the political scene. If we look closely we will also see that this candidate not only thinks for himself, but actually listens to others.

A dramatic example is his response to criticism of his position on FISA. First of all, the campaign to get him to change his position began on his own website, but he even responded to the critics, setting forth his nuanced position and invited further discussion of the issue.

This is real change. Unlike the current occupant of the White House, who is shielded from dissenting opinion, Obama invites the discussion and engages his critics.

This what real change is about -- not bullets and sound bites. It may be confusing at first to support a candidate with whom we may not always agree and whose opinions are nuanced and detailed. But this is the beginning of a great adventure. The election of a President who can think, does think, listens, and engages. Such a candidate may appear to change his mind from time to time, but I suggest that over time we will discover that a thread of continuity runs through his thought, and then when a new or changed idea must be acknowleged it is not merely grafted on but woven into the very structure and body of the man and his campaign.

So it is necessary that we continue to scrutinize him, and to holler when we think he has strayed, but we also owe it to ourselves and the nation to put these matters into perspective and continue this great adventure.

Originally uploaded by lex naturalis

Today is the 4th of July, otherwise known as Independence Day for Americans. I did nothing today, nor did I plan on doing anything.

Fireworks? My dad has always thought that fireworks are a big waste of money. Not to mention that pretty much my whole family is asthmatic, so we don't do that. We have never set them off, and we stopped going outside to see them because the smoke near suffocates us. So we watch them on television. You know that super spectacular fireworks show that Macy's puts on every year in the Big Apple? Yeah. We watch that. I used to love it, but this year, the show somehow lost all of its luster.

My parents asked my brother, Sky, and me if we were watching the show, since we were both on our respective laptops doing nothing, really. Sky, apparently, was giving his full attention to the fireworks out of the minutest edge of his peripheral vision. I, however, gave nothing but the slightest glances that probably added up to maybe 3 or 4 seconds. I found myself answering, "No. It's really kind of boring. Fireworks are just chemicals in paper shells exploding that give off light and whatnot." Now I'm not sure where that came from, and yet, I know exactly where it came from. I guess I was just done with the pointlessness of fireworks, or something, among other things. And I suppose pointlessness was getting under my skin today even more than usual. I'm sure it's different with fireworks in person. And yet there's so much more to it that I can't even formulate to myself.

And there's something about fireworks in person that makes me miss people. I do not know. It is strange. Something about paper shells bursting with heat and light and smoke in an exothermic reaction, marked by negative enthalpy and maybe positive entropy and negative Gibbs' free energy, makes me yearn to have certain people within arm's reach, for what open arms are meant to do. I don't know. It's strange.

I flew a kite yesterday for the second time in a long time. As it soared into the bright wild blue yonder, I wondered at the notion of a kite. But I know not what I'm going to write about, so I suppose I'd like to ask your patience.

I guess that some people are just clouds. They have big, lofty, beautiful dreams that they are determined to make come true. Complete dreamers. Which is not a bad thing, if they act. But regardless of the presence of action, they still harbor some great, large dreams that may seem unrealistic at times. I believe in many of their dreams. But I myself am not a cloud. If anything, I'm something of a kite. A small, artificial object that can fly and really get into the blue--to a point. A kite is a man-made cloud that is tethered to the Earth, really. Sometimes I feel artificial, a product of human circumstance, instead of the product of a Cosmic Creator. And sometimes I feel like I'm up like a cloud, but then I get too high and my own tether tightens up and reminds me of where I really am. I suppose that it's not an entirely bad thing; it's just another way of being. It's just that the moment when the taut tether tugs is such a depressing one. I feel the need to be realistic, but I unknowingly soar up. And though I do not and cannot get anywhere near the clouds, it sure does feel like it sometimes. Maybe there are romanticists: dreamers, clouds; and realists: rocks or grand mountains (I don't know...maybe steel structures. I haven't completely thought through the natural vs. contrived aspect of this); and then there those in the middle, somehow: kites. Although kites spend much of their time in the air, they're still connected to the Earth all the while. I don't know. The flying and the being close to the Earth is not so bad. It's just hard to stand the moment in between. It's all good, I think.

It's not very complicated to put a kite together. The fabric is already there for you, and alls you have to do is put the right plastic supports in the corresponding niches. It feels unnatural, really. A feeble human attempt at feeling the firmament. I don't know. So if a kite is the somewhat artificial, then what is the state of the sky and the ground? Which is the absolutely artificial, and which is the absolutely natural--or God-made?

It seems that being a dreamer could be the natural state as well as any other. Humans were made to be free, according to the Enlightenment--not to mention the Bible or anything like that. A cloud, a dreamer is free to dance with the wind and be. That seems natural, does it not?

A realist could be just as natural. Humans should live realistically, because this is reality, after all. A boulder, a cave, a realist spends the entirety of its time on the ground, living the living daylights out of its existence. It makes the best of its life. That could surely be the natural state, no?

I don't know. Figure something for me, if you like. All I know is that I may be something of a kite.

Sometimes I find myself with little feeling toward a certain situation or idea. Dating, or at least an attempt at dating, can leave me drained. Sometimes I realize the girl just isn't interested, or doesn't appear to be. I think sometimes the girl doesn't know what she wants, and that leaves me nowhere. Sometimes I just get tired of how dating seems to be a card game of betting and bluff. At that point, I'll take a cold beer and an evening on the back patio over the frustration of dating. I have found myself using the term ambivalent to describe this feeling.

I looked up the word ambivalent and found this definition: continual fluctuation (as between one thing and its opposite), simultaneous and contradictory attitudes or feelings (as attraction and repulsion) toward an object, person, or action.

When it comes to dating, sometimes I just don't care. Ambivalent isn't the word for it. At the point where I am out with a beer on the patio, I am in a state of indifference: absence of compulsion to or toward one thing or another.

But most of the time I do care when it comes to dating. Especially when the girl is smart, funny, and hot. After twenty years of dating, I do find I am ambivalent: I have equal and contradictory feelings. I want to date, but I just don't want to deal the potential rejection. I don't want the headache, but I do want the girl.

Dating is a frustrating and uneven process. But I know from experience it can have a fulfilling result, due to that fact that occasionally things go well.

I just need to realize internally that I am caught between the nuance of indifference and ambivalence.

Simon Norfolk is one of my favorite contemporary photographers, I like the nuance in his work, the way he shows things that are not there. Take the example above, a first glance its just a staircase, but when you learn the story and contexts behind the image its true impact becomes apparent. This staircase is in a concentration camp in Auschwitz, Germany, leading what used to be a gas chamber and the worn down staircase shows the hundreds of thousands of people who walked up it to their deaths. The image below looks like a river of blood in the snow but is actually pollution from a factory. I think its a powerful metaphor for the fragile nature of our environment.

Great day.

Things can happen so quickly, can't they?

It's summer. Days and weeks and months last forever, and things that happen in three days seem like they take a week, and yet they happen in a flash. Your heart beats like four-year old with ADHD on a bass drum and you're breathless when you look back on the events. Then I squint and a big question mark comes out of my head.

One of my favorite Bible passages has been Song of Solomon 8:6-7. Everyone always points to 1 Corinthians 13 as the paragon of love--and I agree--but this one is a short outgrowth of the love described in that passage.

"Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its ardor unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.

Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot wash it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of his house for love,
it would be utterly scorned."

The beloved longs to have her lover seal up his heart just for her, making her a permanent part of him. Love is that strong, that permanent! As strong as death! Death is pretty strong, wouldn't you say? And love's passion is as determined and enduring as the grave. As far as I know, the grave hasn't let anyone escape its grasp. Needless to say, that's powerful stuff.

A seal that can never be broken, a fire that can never go out, a priceless gift.

I want that.

I guess I don’t always write on the most erudite of subjects, but I write. I suppose that if it’s not the erudite, it’s the nuances in life that I write about. Like how perfectly a girl’s head can fit on a boy’s shoulder, and how such an innocent action can leave both parties squinting and breathless and wondering–-wondering how God thought of this tiniest morsel of joy. Like how moonbeams can shine through your windows at 4:00AM and give you perfect sight in the midst of darkness, while you wonder why or how you got up in the middle of the night–-and then you stop to revel in the silence and peace, and thank God for a beautiful moment. Like how rain and an overcast sky can seem gloomy, yet how I wonder how I find hope in God’s message–-”Here, each droplet of rain has a purpose, and each will provide nourishment and replenishment to you and the rest of my creation. Live.”

Surface. Sometimes the picture is about the paint itself and what it does, about layers of color that hide under others just barely visible, about color dragged over the pores of the canvas so that it hits the peaks and leaves another layer visible beneath it. This aspect of painting is where the discovery lives for the artist, I think. Paintings unfold in unexpected ways. It's true that you can plan a picture completely beforehand so that you know where all its objects will fall. But an artist would need omniscience to know where his thoughts will take him first. She would have to have a crystal ball to know beforehand how the thing will get woven together, brushstroke by brushstroke.

Is this just an insider's game, or does a dance of surfaces delight the spectator as well? Do tropical colors unfolding in layers make your heart beat faster?

D'abord une pensée qui se cherche, qui cherche une traduction symbolique, un signe qui la représente ;

Puis c'est un signe sonore, d'usage immédiat, communicable à portée de voix, mémorisable, souvent inséré dans une séquence sonore plus ou moins longue où les phonèmes (les unités sonores) sont plus faciles à repérer que les mots, souvent constitués d'une chaine de phonèmes) ;

WIRED has a story about voice recognition going mainstream.

Speech technology has long languished in the no-man's land between sci-fi fantasy ("Computer, engage warp drive!") and disappointing reality ("For further assistance, please say or press 1 ...").

But that's about to change, as advances in computing power make voice recognition the next big thing in electronic security and user-interface design.

Read the rest of the story here.

Carver Mead at CalTech introduced me to one of his former students, Lloyd Watts, several years ago. Lloyd was creating voice recognition technology by studying the way the human ear processes audio signals. Seemed to me the right way to go about creating the technology. Lloyd is founder of Audience.

Will be interesting to see how voice recognition evolves. Needless to say, I'm long the technology.

A while back I was surfing through some pages about business cards when I came across a clip from American Psycho in which the main character Patrick Bateman is comparing business cards. If you haven't seen the film or read the book, Bateman is a killer with an MBA and an unfulfilling job in upper management. Despite his lack of interest in his work, he is very imaging conscious and stresses over the approval of his peers. This is a sentiment that many of us in the fields of marketing and design can relate to.

At first glance all of the cards appear unimaginative and corporate standard. The differences come in nuances of background color and typeface. The colors are as similar as bone and egg shell, but one card stands out. While the others differentiate with more fashionable typefaces or raised lettering, Paul Allen's has a watermark. The watermark doesn't stand out at a distance but up close it's something truly special within the confines of the otherwise bland corporate format.

There is a lesson to be learned here about the power of subtlety. A small difference in style or presentation can go miles to set you apart. Appreciation for nuance also says a lot about you a designer or marketing professional, it lets customers know that you will pay attention to them and their project.

Roundup: Small details = Differentiation, Detail orientation speaks volumes

One of the big surprises in my career, watching technology develop, has been the failure of voice interfaces. Chalk it up to accents and the complexity of English. Listen to a Southerner or a Scotsman and the problem becomes obvious. Better yet try listening to your kids.

The only way to make it work is to make it work. And thanks to the immense growth in military medicine, you have a platform on which this forcing can happen.

Nuance Communications says its Dragon NaturallySpeaking is now being used by over 6,000 clinicians, because it was mandated by the military as the preferred way to document care with its AHLTA system.Whatever you think of AHLTA or the military, the bottom line is you now have a complete voice-to-text interface for medical diagnosis, with 6,000 users and growing.

AHLTA consultants say the system is saving clinicians time, and enabling the creation of more complete medical records.

Nuance has now begun the process of transferring this experience into civilian medicine, which I hope means that interfaces for McKesson, Cerner and Microsoft are coming soon.Once we have a beachhead for spoken interfaces in medicine, perhaps we can expand it into other areas, and speech will finally take its rightful space as the right way to talk to a computer.
