Unkle Jam

I saw this band live a year and a half ago and although I am normally not into contemporary RnB, these guys were a lot of fun on stage. The reason is probably that they are actually not just RnB but a bit of 80s and a dash of 70s funk as well.

I don't know how serious you can and should take their music because their videos alone look more like an ironic approach to RnB these days and the lyrics are not really what you could call imaginative but their music is a lot of fun, these guys can sing and the production is playful. You can see that these guys know what they are doing and add a lot of razzle dazzle (ha, always wanted to use that phrase) to such a worn out genre. In the end this is how I imagine a blooming future for RnB. I hope the majority of music listeners feel the same because I am sick and tired of Timbaland and P Diddy.

Love Ya

White Lies

Because of this band I can't wait for summer to be over. White Lies are just too perfect for autumn and winter, their music is like a Jim Jarmusch movie or a book by Rick Moody. The melancholy of the songs is a nod towards Nick Cave and Echo & The Bunnymen and is covering your heart like oil. They could turn into the National of the year 2008 not only because singer Harry McVeigh will get you with this voice that drips of despair and lost opportunities. Amazing is, however, how they manage to avoid the kitsch as violin arrangements and this low bass guitar hum next to lyrics of failed characters that search for a light but never quite get close to it. Not many bands can pull that through without sounding like some emo-lookalike contestant from a casting-show.

You may not listen to them at the hot beachparty with limbo and sangria but if you need some heavy indie-hymnals for shuffling through fallen leaves and the first snowfall at night, you have just reached your goal.

Unfinished Business

The Magistrates

Yeah, there is a certain trend in this week's blog. two thirds of my favourite bands are very funky indeed. The Magistrates are just groovy enough not to be too mainstream, although the first single "make this work" reminds (especially in terms of vocals) a little bit of Paolo Nutini, their other songs go more the direction of the Wombats or the Klaxons. And this voice is a saviour as it distinguishes the Magistrates from fore-mentioned bands in this unsettling high-pitched way that makes the music always a little bit restless and impatient. If Marvin Gaye would have been able to meet the Klaxons, it maybe would have sounded like The Magistrates and that is very nice indeed.

Make this work

I don’t buy CDs anymore.
Now, this could be seen as an attempt by me to say “Look how ad

I don't buy CDs anymore.

Now, this could be seen as an attempt by me to say "Look how advanced I am technologically", but far from it.

Its not that I don't actually buy music anymore, I do. I just prefer to get it in convenient digital packages which take up no space in my living room, I can play immediately and I don't have to spend hours ripping them onto my Mac in order to listen to them on my ipod.

So, its partly a practical solution.

Once you get over the sentimental and romantic idea that CDs and vinyl are objects to be cherished because you can touch them and look at them on the shelf and say to people (silently, smuggly) "This is my taste, look at my music collection", it really isn't a problem.
Of course, if you want to announce your musical taste (and we all do, really), you can do so on Last.fm where people can view your music collection in an instant. The problem with that is: when you secretly play that old Kajagoogoo album that you keep hidden behind all the Finnish Jazz, Swedish pop and Japanese HipHop albums; it isn't a secret anymore. The Last.fm Big Brother sees all.

Anyway, I digress.

No, the really good thing about the digital music 'revolution' (old hat, I know, but it is revolutionary) is that it has enabled any musician with an internet connection to get their music heard. Music sites, MP3s, ipods and social networking have democratised music. Not completely, but mostly.
Labels and distributers still have vast resources to promote and distribute 'signed' artists' music, thus getting it played on radio, etc. But people are becoming more used to the idea that good music is good music, whether it be by a signed artist or an unsigned artist. And if its available for free, all the better.

Its at this point that I must confess that my staple listening involves signed, or established artists. But I'm trying to change my listening habits. Some people have already done that themselves. For instance, my main recent musical collaborator, Marie, seems mainly to play nothing but unsigned artists, all trawled from Last.fm.

Anyway, here is a link to my playlist of unsigned artists whom I have found particularly interesting (excuse the self-promotion bit; I have populated the first part of the playlist with Dementio13 tracks):

'Sonic Stuff' playlist

And here's a list of the artists in no particular order:

Crimson Death - fantastic drum n bass from Canada

There are many other artists, of course. But these are the ones I am most familiar with. Definitely worth searching out.

Betty with a husky triumphs in casual Aladdin threads. Open-fucking-sesame, the core of Mona's come-and-get-some is the exiting (thank fuck) nu-rave without making me want to vomit. Pac-man tee, aggressively coloured and printed desert scarf, Alabama fucking shades, the cut with care to barely there jacket and some serious skull detailing on the trashed flat kicks.

There is then the fucking dog. Solid as a rock. Mona, STNF is willing to put you on the payroll.

Glamour for Better
If you thought that the Klaxons, Shitdisco or Hadouken are the peek of Nu Rave

Glamour for Better

If you thought that the Klaxons, Shitdisco or Hadouken are the peek of Nu Rave, you just didn't meet Glamour for Better yet. These guys are insane in the best way possible. Three guys with drums, guitar and some technical equipment who go absolutely insane on stage and drive the Nu Rave music into something very intense and aggressive. They basically turn everything up a notch and remix this genre - that already seems to be worn out - into a hard-ass monster. I think, this band is what Nu Rave needed, some young guys that give a shit about how you have to approach it and soil and spoil it with their alternative influences. It's great, it's intense. It's even better live and I have to know, because I've seen them giving a concert in front of four people (already including me) and confronted with technical problems and they still rocked my mind and my ass off!

Ryan vs. Roundabout

kitty daisy and lewis

We've been to the 80s with Nu Rave and Newnewwave, we've been to the 70s with bands like Wolfmother or the White Stripes and we've met the 60s with Amy Winehouse and the divine Last Shadow Puppets. But it seems as if that isn't enough. We need to get back in time even more. Well, there you have it. Kitty Daisy and Lewis present you some lovely old-fashioned tunes that sound like smokey bars in some shady areas of New Orleans. We smell tobacco and the fiercest whiskey in the area and we hear their music, accompanied by the tapping of fine leather shoes on wooden floors. Is it Rockabilly, Blues, Soul? Who cares, it's a journey back in time and it's worth it. I only wonder, when we will dance to some Mozart-esque tunes...

going up the country

Noah and the Whale

A great sign for me being under too much stress is, when I forget the name of an awesome band. But it's a joy to rediscover a band that has already won your heart once. Noah and the whale make the sweetest indiemusic with numerous folky instruments and lovely lyrics. It's the kind of music you want to listen to when you drive in a car, have a bonfire at the beach or sit on the balcony on a Sunday morning. You could actually listen to them in every imaginable occasion.

I love songs that don't force you to dance but rather encourage you only if you want to but that also work if you are just sitting or lying somewhere. You want the proof? Here it is!

5 years time

Working on new tracks is always difficult at first. Finding the spark that spurs you on to produce m

Working on new tracks is always difficult at first. Finding the spark that spurs you on to produce more is dependent on mood, time available and what's going on in your life. And so, though I've got time (plenty of it at the moment), the other two factors seem to be affecting my output.
And so I've returned to some older tracks to reinterpret them in the hope that they'll light a fire under my sorry ass. The tracks I did with Pixieguts which formed the album, 'Pixiegraf', are good tracks, but there are areas of the production which I think need more work.....the bass sounds thin and (apart from my poor bass playing technique) isn't punchy enough. This has been helped, though, by my new effects unit...I can now add proper compression, etc instead of having to make do with the Fusion's effects.
Also, elements of the instrumentation seem to swamp Marie's vocals. So, instead of trying to recreate the tracks, I've started from scratch, building a new track around her vocals. They're not so much a remix, as a re-record.

Anyway, I've been a bit more sparse with the arrangements and pushed Marie's vocals more upfront. The improvement is immense, I feel.

A few vintage synth sounds and less dense effects have given the voice more room to breath. In some ways I've taken a step back to my older tracks where I had nothing more than an old battered PC with an Awe64 soundcard. I was limited to simple effects like room reverb and chorus, and my sounds were all meticulously constructed out of samples and simple waveforms to approximate old skool synths.
Don't get me wrong, but sometimes, the more kit you own, the less easy it is to work. My Alesis Fusion is a great keyboard which does everything pretty well. Its a great sampler, and a superb synth and sequencer. The HD recording function is OK too. But sometimes, it sounds too slick, and it gives you way too many options, when sometimes the best option is the first one you happen upon.
And why sit for hours creating great original sounds, when there are thousands loaded as presets?

One thing I have done is load all those old Soundfonts into the fusion, so now I have all the old original sounds I had on my soundcard.

Anyway....this was a rumination on...er....something. Not sure what though!

When the new tracks come online, please check them out here .

Also, Marie's own albums contain the originals of these tracks, plus her collaborations with other musicians. That is here.

Nick Zinner of !!!, doing what Nick Zinner does.

I'm currently working on my annual "trend spotting" type list of what I saw at this weekend's festivities. (You can check out last year's here.) If you are not aware, Pitchfork is a festival that brings local, national and international talent together, so they can all look at how each other are dressing. Oh yeah, there’s music there too.

It was a pretty good year, actually, but I was hoping for more in the "style" department, not sure why. It could be for anyone of these three reasons:

As Pitchfork notoriety has grown in the last three years, perhaps the fest’s “edgy” feel has worn off a bit, and with that, it’s forward-dressing attendees have diluted.

My disillusionment and unending distaste for anything new or old

I am WAY ahead of all trends now.

Bradford James Cox of Deerhuner and Mark Sultan of King Kahn attempt to entertain impatient Cut Copy fans. "A" for effort.

The feast was actually really fun. !!! killed, which is no surprise. Les Savy Fav was awesome, also no surprises there. Biggest issue with the event was actually Cut Copy’s failure to make it from the airport in time for their closing set. Though that’s no fault of their own, it’s still supremely disappointing. In what allotted time was left, they made the most of it, banging out both crowd-bouncers “Light & Music”, and “Hearts on Fire” to an enthused (but obviously peeved) crowd. Those that stuck around to see the hyper-abbreviated set worked very hard for an encore which didn’t come -- chanting “Five More Songs, Five More Songs” probably didn’t help.

Before I write about “trend spotting” thing, which I’ll post about tomorrow probably, I wanted to mention things I didn’t see but expected to...

Party-Rappers: I saw very few nu-rave/b-boy kids. There were a few zany fluorescent windbreakers in the crowd, but surprisingly few retina-burning limited-edition hightops, Kanye-esque Venitian blind sunglasses, and “crosscolor” wear.

American Apparel Smack Girls: Emaciated heroin-chic AmAp mannequins, looking like the Olsen twins on a budget, did not take over the fest. I’m not particularly against American Apparel at all, but sometimes their style and color-choices are very disturbing. Just because you bought your entire outfit at the same store does NOT mean that it will automatically go together. They should put that as a disclaimer on the bag.

The Unapologetic Prep: With XRT-approved artists Vampire Weekend and Spoon both playing, and with coverage from outlets like Chicago rag The Red Eye, I anticipated seeing a lot more Chad/Trixie presence. V.W. especially, whose style is particularly "high-prep" did not bring out the J. Crew slew. Surprisingly, the most evidence I saw of this was on Friday during Public Enemy!(?) Who woulda' thunk it? While Chuck D was talking about war, racism, Darfur, etc., there was a dude next to us going on a tirade about Chicago’s 10.25% sales tax. When Chuck was talking about the drug trade and Big Pharm, this guy started screaming about how much money he lost with his Pfizer stock last week. I’m NOT making this up.

Mud People: I’m am SO impressed with the lack of Mud People over the weekend. The hippie count, though present at the fest, was still at very low levels. Very few idiots thought it a good idea to douse themselves completely in mud. Yes, L.S.V. did it, but they’re on a stage -- you are not.

Check back soon for a quick overview of what was stylin' this year, and what you will soon see in your local bar if your local bar has Yo La Tengo on the juke box.

Oh, and just to streamline the process, here's all the missed connections posted from this weekend so far. You're welcome:

CMYK is a Blog originally created by myself and a friend to offer music downloads, links, reviews and create interest for a club night. I came up with the name CMYK as the descriptive colour code sums up the trend for the colours Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black within in the genre of music that we were playing and writing about.

I designed the CMYK logo as an expansion of the Framedink - "Splodge" logo in a on going body of work looking into how my original "Splodge" could be expanded, altered and reinvented. This lead to a body of work which included a secure ticket, flyer, poster and club decor. I also passed my work to a another friend who used the images to create video and animation for screens and backdrops in the club. We also had a Photographer to take pictures on the night, which can be viewed in the "image" section of the website.

Last year, everyone was raving (literally) about the new fashion: Nu-rave. I think that Tom Clarke summed it up perfectly:

What is new rave? New rave, you say it, it sounds like shit. Old rave was proper. Well, it's not even old rave, but rave was proper. New rave is just a bunch of shit bands playing shit songs really, really quick, that's what new rave is. There's no point in it. There's no musicianship, no songs, no point. It's a bandwagon and people will ride along it for a couple of minutes then it'll finish hopefully.

And it did finish. Very quickly.
Well boys and girls it's been a whole year and where has this preserve of Neverland's Lost Boys taken us? Nowhere. Fuckwhere. What I want to know is what the new cool thing is this summer. Not for me, I'm fine being my own rolling stone, but I am sick to death of looking at Pete Docherty clones everywhere. Hitting them over the head with a giant glow stick feels fantastic. I want a change of scenery. Well according to the street it's still 1969 and everyone is in the Libertines. But come on guys, it's been years now. Where's the new break?

It just makes me think, "What is up with this place? Burma has gone to shit and Mark Speight from SMart isn't answering his phone (anyone seen him?)".
It's not good enough teenagers. Get your act together.
That's why this summer I am donning suits, like a right Portobello bastard. Dave Davies was found in bed with 5 girls at the age of 16. That my friends, is what suits do for you. A few years ago I would have been stabbed at for wearing a suit, but I'm approaching the "wear what the fuck you want" age of life (16-34).

I'm taking a leaf out of the book of Eddie Argos ("Wet trousers in the washing machine, but I'd rather be damp than seen in jeans"). Eddie may be in the same category as "That girls an Indie Cindy, Lego haircut and polka-dot dress" but you have to respect this guy. If the scene wasn't so cheesy he would be a real legend: Fucking Hoosiers weighing Eddo down.

This guy is Jarvis Cocker and I have a Pulp Addiction. It may all be "Wear-Straw-Hats-And-Wayfarers" but some people know what to do: throw away the jeans and get your threads in M&S.
Only could old Eddie make the title of this post a pop-culture reference in itself.

Kriss Menace, Fred Falke, Dj Falcon

Louis La Roche' from UK. He just released his 1st EP 'The Peach' for free download on his MySpace.
With only 17 years old but his future is so bright.

The sound of mid 90's French House/ Filter House (like Full Intention, Superfunk, early Cassius). This make him a bit stand out from other Justice-esque bands.

Spanish designer Roberto Piquera’s S/S 08 collection gives men a new challenge of the up com

Spanish designer Roberto Piquera's S/S 08 collection gives men a new challenge of the up coming style in men's pants. His take on the a 'Nu-Rave' spring and summer plays well in all the techno-color pop of whats going in terms of color in mens wear. The pants, of course is what really attracted me to his collection. The futuristic appeal these pants took on still bares an undertone of the classic zoot-zoot trouser styling.

As much as I love and want to wear harem or high waisted pants, I realize the mass fashion market is not made for some one as short as me when it comes to bottoms. Just trying to find the perfect jean is an never ending battle, I think I've given up and moved on. I'm privileged to know the craft of pattern making so if I decided too, I Could bust out a pair of stylish pants that are proportionate to my size.

When it comes to high waisted jeans for women, I feel the trend is a dying horse and were just dealing with the clean up. Of course its natural for men to pick up where woman left off in fashion. Fashion always seems to trickle down into men's wear.

I shutter to think that one day I might have to incorporate this look into my wardrobe, but I think I could. I do realize its not a good look when your 5'5". Maybe I'll find a middle man for this little man.

Woo! Another sweet group combining the best of slightly awkward vocals, guitar riffs, dance-able drum beats and synth melodies- Kaputt really does get people subconsciouly nodding their heads and itching to dance (tested at my workplace and approved which I do on occasion). I wouldn't be surprised if Kaputt will be added to the already awesome playlist at music bars like Amps (in Perth) soon.

Tell me a little about yourselves?
Silke Steidinger (vocals & guitar) - originally from Germany, now East London.
Matt Yeates (guitar)
Ben Roussel (bass)
Dave Ansell (drums)
all from London

What did you guys do before the group started?
Various different bands - I was in the Go! Team when starting kaputt, and we were all doing our day jobs before that we're still doing now and are hoping to replace with being in a full time band as soon as possible.

How did you start out/ was it hard?
In the beginning it was hard because I was touring a lot with The Go! Team so we had to work around that with rehearsing and gigging. Now the difficulties are finding a good label and agents in the jungle that the music industry has developed into recently.

Any big plans for the near future?
Get an album out - we're recording stuff with a producer who did British Sea Power and others in the next few weeks, so fingers crossed. Going on tour a bit would be nice too.

--Random questions--
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
I really quite like that Black Kids song I'm not Gonna Teach him...

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
my local swimming pool.

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?
yes but it's secret innit.

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
isn't that the only reason why anyone ever picks up playing an instrument? ;-)

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
this random guy walked in from the street at this weird gig we were playing and tried to beat up ben our bass player. the bouncer had to intervene and kick him out mid song. ben courageously continued playing. it was funny.

Events (for UK peepz)-
31 May- Barfly, London
21 June- John Kennedy (XFM) presents kaputt at the Remedy at The Social, London.

So start this shiz up and get your dance on!
