CURATOR — You'll work closely with the artists to devise the artistic direction and details of their exhibitions. As a curator, you have to bring the best out of the artist in a manner that matters to your audience.

MANAGER — You'll oversee issues of scheduling as well as cajoling students to exhibit. As a facilitator of this space for the school, you'll also be in touch with them to manage funding.

TECHNICAL EXPERT — You'll need to have the knowledge to bring out the best quality of the artist's visuals. These include issues of resolution, colour, sizes, file formats...

So, if you're interested, do drop us an e-mail at outsightsci@gmail.com or ask around school for Darren, JJ or Justin, all final-year SCI students and come talk to us!

The correct dates for the Texada Retreat are the 2ND!! Friday of the month plus the Sat and Sunday - so note Nove 14, 15, and 16th.

The sign up sheet looked quite full when I saw it at the business mtg - but call Barb McC if you would like your name on the list.

If you left the business mtg early , then you missed the meeting of the retreat group. There are plans afoot for a different group activity, and there was meal planning , as well as car pooling discussions. Please contact Barb McC if you missed these details.

We have been disappointed in the attendance at the quilt show planning mtgs. YES! we know that you all plan to attend the quilt show and sign up for your hour or 2 of manning a table or position. BUT! we need your help NOW! Please come to the next planning mtg on Oct 9th.

The Maple Street gang have taken on the security tasks for many shows and it is now time for them to have a rest. Who's going to have a PJparty at the hall for quilt show security? Please join me for pizza, cards, and vino?

Alice McCallum will be our instructor for Demo night , Oct 16th. She will be showing us a binding technique developed by Sharon Schamber. There are some surprises in the finishing of your bindings to make them prize winning and precise. One surprise is that there is little to no hand finishing! that's a bonus for completing faster.

There is a tremendous tutorial on the internet , but we will work together step by step to improve our techniques and precision. You can see some of Sharon's prize winning quilts on her website and note that she has won ribbons not just for design , but for her details in finishing.

When we say it's not finished until it's quilted, bound, labeled, yada, yada, ....well you'll see some of this detail makes for stunning results.

I am going to be at the guild to sandwich several quilts on Thurs Oct 23. Who wants to join me for a sandwiching/basteing workbee and we can help each other? There's lots of quilts that are sure to need finishing before the quilt show and we can make that happen.

Remember that the guild hall is also open from 10:00 am to past noon every Tues. You can come to stitch, sandwich, check out the library and chat. Casual Drop-in sessions to get to know your fellow guild members.

We have added some new articles to the 'ideas' section of the website. Foreword by Chris Kane

The national question remains of particular concern to communists and socialists in the 21st century. One of the principle sources on the national question remains the writings of the Russian communist Lenin. Here is a critical examination of Lenin's theory of the national question by the Ukrainian Marxist Andrij Karpenko, from the Ukrainian socialist journal META. We have also reproduced a pamphlet by the theorist of the then newly formed and at that time genuine Communist Party of Great Britain, William Paul, on the Irish question and its relationship to the world revolution.

Indeed, since the launching of The Commune many on the traditional left have been searching for ways to categorise us: we have been branded ‘anti-Bolsheviks’ by the Trotskyists and ‘Leninists’ by the anarchists. We recognise Lenin, with other communists of his generation, as an vitally important revolutionary of the 20th century. As critical Marxists, we neither demonise Lenin nor raise him to the figure of a Pope. On The Commune we have published a number of writers who have critically engaged with Lenin’s ideas such as Paul Cardan (Castoriadis). Here we reproduce a defence of Lenin against Cardan by Raya Dunayevskaya, the founder of Marxist-Humanism in the USA. Dunayevskaya was critical of Lenin, in particular his views on the leading role of the vanguard Party, but she was equally critical of anti-Leninists. The Scottish Marxist-Humanist edited by Harry McShane first published this article.

Now in its fifth year, the Queensland Multicultural Festival is Queensland’s largest, free, one-day community event.

[gallery]

This year's diverse range of entertainment includes five performance stages, 40 international food stalls, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities and guest appearances by Queensland Roar players.

Canadian music doyen Harry Manx will headline this year's festival with a hypnotic live show that captures a vibrant and unique blend of Mississippi Delta Blues and Indian ragas. Queensland sensations Katie Noonan and Doch will also perform.
