I should mention that the end of the writing portion of the witch book also corresponded with my reaching the end of my notebook! In my interview over at Incendiary Lit, I mentioned that I always write in composition books. However, I didn't mention that I decorate said composition books first. Look, I will admit it: I am obsessed with Mod Podge. Whoever invented Mod Podge should be crowned queen or king of the world. I would probably Mod Podge the walls of my apartment, if I wouldn't have to pay a ton of money in fines. Here's a photograph of the notebook in question:

[caption id="attachment_131" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="My notebook -- finished!"][/caption]

Ah, sweet notebook. It's served me well since 2006, through two NaPoWriMos, many frantic research sessions, and the entirety of this manuscript. I'm sad to see it go!

I thought I would also post Gertrude Stein's reaction to The Siege in the Room and to the boxes which must seem especially ominous to her poor feline eyes:

Electronista ran a story about a possible upgrade to the ASUS Eee PC 900. According to the the article, the specs would remain unchanged except for the hard drive where ASUS would beef it up to 30GB. Battery life is said to decline from 2.5 hours to 2.2 hours due to the increased power demands for the drive. Pricing is US$513 for the Linux version (which comes in black or white) and US$528 for the Windows version (black only). No word on release date.

There is a ton of information regarding how to buy a used laptop. What is a used laptop? What is a refurbished laptop? What do they mean by grade A or grade C? Which models and makes are in the best condition as they age? These are some of the questions that a buyer has to worry about.

Now there are a ton of websites that try to explain the process and give some information about used laptops. A few of the websites are:

www.usedlaptops.net, www.usedlaptops.cc, www.lap-tops.cc, www.mini-laptops.com, www.mini-notebooks.com, www.used-laptop.net, www.refurbished-laptops.net, www.laptop-solutions.com, and www.cheap-laptops.org.

But I think that in most cases all this information leads to confusion. Over the next few days I want to take each of the questions and give some useful information about used laptops and how they are refurbished. I want to explain the various grades and how different companies grade these laptops. Then we will give some good information about the major manufacturers of the laptops like IBM, Dell, HP and Panasonic.

The used IBM Thinkpad R50P Pentium M 1.7 Ghz laptop that we have on the internet for sale is probabl

The used IBM Thinkpad R50P Pentium M 1.7 Ghz laptop that we have on the internet for sale is probably the best choice based on the specifications of this laptop. Here is the picture.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="177" caption="Used IBM Thinkpad R50p Laptop"][/caption]

This laptop includes a DVD Burner and 512 meg of ram. Not bad for the price. Another readson that we like this laptop is because it has a 128 meg video card which based on its age is a nice feature. I think that is what the p denotes in the model number.

IBM also has a great Tech support website that allows you to download any of the user manuals in pdf format as well as all the ibm software that would have come on the unit when it was brand new. All that you need to know is the type number of the laptop which is 1832-23U.

We like the IBM Thinkpad series in general because of the quality of the laptops. Usually when we refurbish the laptop IBM has the fewest problems to fix where as Dell or HP tend to appear more beat up and used up. However I have found that brands are really a personal preference and there is a lot of debate about which model and brand is the best.

We found alot of information about laptops at www.usedlaptops.net they seem to have reams of information about alot of the various model laptops. You can also check out www.cheap-laptops.org as well.

We recently met with Hewlett-Packard executives to discuss their sustainability and green initiative

We recently met with Hewlett-Packard executives to discuss their sustainability and green initiatives. Hard to argue that HP has gone above and beyond the call of duty in this realm, and it’s made it a corporate mission to do more. So my collegues Stephen Stokes, CJ Whelage, and I laid out a challenge for the HP team, and extend it to all laptop manufacturers. And here it is:

Take a new step in thinking about energy efficiency for notebook computers and develop a 12-volt notebook instead of the industry standard 16- to 20-volt varieties.

In doing so, HP and other laptop makers would let consumers, in part, take advantage of the extra electricity generated in various vehicles, allow the use of notebooks on long journeys, and open up access to mobile and fixed computing to a greater cross-section of the developing world where reliable electricity infrastructure is rarely in place.

Can you imagine a world where notebooks are handed out with car charger adapters? Consider the following:

Currently, global sales of notebooks exceed desktop sales and are currently running at around 97 million units annually. Assuming a three-year notebook lifetime and a conservative 20% market growth retrospectively, this implies an installed base of roughly 236 million units. With the typical average power usage levels of 20 watts, and an average daily usage rate of 8 hours, we estimate annual global power usage of notebook to be of the order of 10.4 terawatt hours (that 10.4 million-million watt hours). On average, residential U.S. power rates are 10 cents per kilowatt hour, that’s more than $1B worth of power, power that would have resulted in almost 6 million tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide emissions) being emitted into the atmosphere.

Now, picture this: If 30% of all notebook users used the existing free energy available from automotive recharging for 60% of their notebook electricity demand, annual savings could top more than 1.8 trillion watts of energy. That’s enough to support the annual electricity consumption of more than 175,000 U.S. households and a reduction in GHG emissions of more than a million tons of CO2e (see Figure 1).

In a world looking over longer timescales to expand the fleet of electrical and other hybrid cars, this free energy may not be around forever. But we predict it can significantly dent consumer product energy usage and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions, globally, in the decadal timescales over which HP’s plan is draped. During that time, the notebook market will continue to flourish.

HP seemed keen to take this challenge seriously and we look forward to seeing what they can do with it. What do you think? Any other notebook manufacturers up for the challenge? Let us know.

Years ago, I worked for a medium-sized company with about 130 employees. We shared one laptop. No ki

Years ago, I worked for a medium-sized company with about 130 employees. We shared one laptop. No kidding, but back then, laptops were expensive and as we all had all the hardware and software we needed at the office, management didn’t see the need to invest in laptops. You had to sign the thing out and it was never available, and at 100 pounds soaking wet, I could barely carry the thing to the car anyway. I don’t know why they called them laptops back then — it certainly didn’t fit in my lap!

Things have changed. Now employees carry laptops like books onto planes to meet with out of town clients. While this convenience is great for your users and clients, it can be a nightmare for you. As your company’s IT guru, your job is to secure both the laptop and any data that’s on it. Big job! Huge job! You aren’t paid enough, right? I feel your pain and I’m here to help.

Your first line of defense is to prevent theft, and that includes the hardware and its data. The way to avoid data theft is simple — don’t store sensitive or confidential data on a laptop. Make that company policy and make it hurt when employees break it. You simply don’t have any other choice but to be ruthless. Education is the key. You simply must make users understand that they can’t store sensitive data on laptops that leave the building. The truth is, they don’t need to as there are other options:

If you have remote capability, let users sign in from home or while they’re on the road. There are still security risks, but you alleviate the problem of direct theft.

If there’s no remote access or when remote just doesn’t meet the need (and that happens occasionally), train users how to use a USB flash drive. They’re (typically) removable and rewritable. They weigh just a few ounces and fit into a purse or briefcase, or better yet, into a pocket. They can store from 64 MB to 32 GB! As an added bonus, you really should train them how to encrypt the data, just in case.

Unfortunately, nothing’s absolute, so if a user must store sensitive data on a laptop, instruct him or her to dump the data when they’re done with it. Don’t pass Go; don’t collect $200. As soon as the meeting’s over, dump the data. In the long run, you just can’t afford to run around with a laptop full of sensitive data any longer than you have to. (It is with great reservation that I even offer this piece of advice because I know some users will ignore it or forget it.)

Prohibiting the storage of sensitive data on laptops helps protect your data, but it won’t stop a thief from stealing your laptop or keep an employee from simply losing it during their travels. You can be proactive in this area though:

Register the laptop with the manufacturer.

Store the serial number in a safe place in case you need to identify the laptop to claim it.

Engrave your business name and address on the outer case so that it’s clearly visible. A thief that’s after just the hardware won’t want a laptop that’s marked up that way. In addition, good things do happen and if the laptop is lost, you might get it back.

Take a play from Ian Fleming’s James Bond character and disguise your laptop. It only sounds like overkill, but f theft weren’t big business, manufacturers wouldn’t build laptop cases that look like courier bags and brief cases.

Training users is critical. You’re a team, remember? Your efforts are only so good — the person carrying the laptop needs to be informed and take responsibility. Train users not to be too casual with a laptop:

Conceal the laptop as much as possible and never leave it unattended.

Take it into the restroom stall with you.

Keep it on your lap in a taxi, subway, or plane.

Ask for a booth when you eat out and set your laptop in the booth with you.

Lock the car while driving around to avoid a quick snatch while stopped at a traffic light.

Don’t sit the laptop on the passenger seat — it’s just too easy a target there.

Don’t leave your laptop in the car. If you must, lock it in the trunk.

Buy a lock and train users to secure the laptop to an immovable object at home or in a hotel room. You won’t stop a determined thief, but you will slow them down.

If the worst happens, users should call you immediately so you can change their network passwords immediately. A laptop with remote access is an open door to your server and your company’s data. Also consider reporting the theft or loss to local authorities.

It sounds like a lot of trouble, but truthfully, you can’t afford not to put strict laptop security policies into place and then enforce them. As a small business, you don’t have the luxury of deep pockets and legal resources to protect your company if the worst happens. You’re it…you have to be up to the task.
