Star wows them in South Shields park

Lulu is probably the biggest star so far to grace the stage at the Bents Park in South Shields and we really ought to congratulate South Tyneside Council and it's events team for being able to attract such a high calibre artist to kick off the season of free concerts during the Summer Festival.

Having been warmed up by local band Four Worried Men the massive crowd in the Bents Park were well entertained by Lulu who burst onto the stage looking livelier anf fitter than most Paris Hilton lookalikes on a Friday night at Dusk, to give us a hot rendition of Relight my Fire, the big hit she enjoyed with Take That. She followed that with The Man Who Sold the World and Independence before rolling back the years for some of her earlier work in the hour long extravaganza. She was also joined on stage by locally born John Miles and his son who learned that "Music" was Dad's first love.

As a photo opportunity it was excellent and I bagged a handful of really excellent shots, I'd like to say a big thank you also to the lady who handed my spectacles in to the events office, I'd be quite lost without them! I wouldn't be able to write this blog for sure, so thanks again.

South Shields imponderables

I love my town, I have a certain pride in it, but I'm always ready to challenge the accepted norms, I'm always ready to question if we can do things, better, cheaper, more efficiently, to a higher degree of excellence, or to match or exceed expectations. I'm always ready to see if we are keeping apace with our neighbours or if we can achieve something which they can not.

Two things strike me this weekend as our South Tyneside Summer Festival tries to get into full swing against the background of poor weather and they both revolve around our BME (black, minorities, and ethnic) communities. On the one hand Cllr . Ahmed Khan is calling for the Ocean Road area to be treat in the same away as other areas when it comes to planning permissions for hot food outlets. It has developed a long history and tradition as one of the places to come and eat in South Shields with it's strong influence of Asian cuisine, and has always managed too to involve far eastern Chinese cuisine, Italian food, and the more traditional fish and chips (as you would expect in a seaside resort.) Many may not wish to see much change here, they enjoy going for a curry and some have cheerfully renamed the area "Asian Road" and certainly not in a disparaging way, however there is room for more variety and seaside towns have always enjoyed the availability of gift shops for the souvenir hunters. It would be a shame to see it become a street exclusively for restaurants, just as it is a shame to see Fowler Street becoming a street almost exclusively for commerce rather than retail - it may as well be called "Estate Agent" Street! On this occasion I think Cllr. Khan is right and that Ocean Road ought to be treat in the same manner as Dean Road or the Nook and included in the draft plan (but not retrospectively of course). We certainly could do with a few more shops interspersing the restaurants.

The other matter which concerns me is the apparent exclusion of the BME communities from our annual Cookson Parade, I don't know if this is an error of omission or a deliberate decision by some not to take part. I noticed a good mix yesterday of male, female, young, old, abled, and less abled, however what was evident was a lack of contribution from the BME sections of our community. We have a reasonably sized Yemeni community and a decent sized Bangladeshi community, as well as Hindu, gay, lesbian, and others in South Tyneside. Yet for the past two years we have not had a multicultural mehla to share their experiences with, neither have we seen any positive involvement from these groupings in our annual community carnival. It could be that they have been invited to participate but found it neither appropriate or beneficial to participate, or on the other hand their associations may have been forgotten - I don't know.

But it does seem a shame that the annual Cookson Parade in South Shields is beginning to look like a white persons celebration that does not fully include all sections of our diverse community.

Something I've been meaning to mention for a few days but I've been a bit busy. When MP's shamefully decided to keep themselves a huge chunk of expenses described as the John Lewis list, to help with a second home in London, neither South Shields MP David Miliband or Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn voted in favour, to their credit.

Sadly many other Labour MPs did, and a few of them represent north-east constituencies, there was also a smattering of Tories in there too, they ought to be ashamed!

The north-east MPs still wishing to keep themselves comfortable at our expense include:

David Anderson (Blaydon), Roberta Blackman-Woods (Durham, City of), Nick Brown (Newcastle upon Tyne East & Wallsend), Stephen Byers (Tyneside North), Alan Campbell (Tynemouth), Ronnie Campbell (Blyth Valley), David Clelland (Tyne Bridge), John Cummings (Easington), Bill Etherington (Sunderland North), Sharon Hodgson (Gateshead East & Washington West), Kevan Jones (Durham North), Phil Wilson (Sedgefield), and Iain Wright (Hartlepool).

At a time when Gordon Brown is appealing for pay restraint as the credit crunch bites harder I find it appalling that Cabinet ministers have failed to heed his call and voted with those wishing to keep their snouts in the trough - Brown clearly has no control over his ministers any longer!

Cookson Parade made it through the rain

Yesterday's annual Cookson Parade through the streets of South Shields became a victim of a terrible torrential downpour as hundreds of participants from a huge variety of community organisations danced their way through the storm to bring a splash of colour to our Summer Festival in South Tyneside. Having been waved off by the Mayor and Mayoress at the Town Hall in Westoe Road by the time the parade reached the Bents Park at the coast the event was beginning to look like an attempt at the Guinness Book of Records biggest wet T-shirt competition. Once the rain had started it just got worse with no prospect of a let up and South Shields was looking like it was experiencing a monsoon.

However, children and adults braved it all and kept smiling as costumes and designs which were themed as oriental and eastern heroes, or Hentai, were thoroughly soaked. I take my hat off to them all, after months of preparations they still managed to finish the event despite looking like bedraggled cats, you just had to admire them all, even the handful of South Tyneside councillors who decided to walk near the end of the parade rather than taking a ride in one of the historic buses at the back.

The summer fayre in the Bents Park was the biggest victim of the weather as scores of charities and community groups and associations saw their chance of raising a bit of much needed cash washed away as the crowds sought cover in the only marquee available before heading for home, after a quick decision was made to cancel planned events in the park. Spirits may have been dampened but everyone made the best of it, it was a sensible decision as the downpour would have turned the ground into a Glastonbury style mud bath.

I followed the parade from the Town hall to the Bents Park and shot more than two hundred pictures, my clothes were stuck to the skin, my feet soaked as the leather of my shoes eventually replicated a natural sponge, cameras and flash guns needed a good drying out and my coat is still soaking wet today! I've put this little slideshow together to give you a flavour of the event, and I hope that today's planned concert with Lulu in the Bents Park is not affected by bad weather, unfortunately today's forecast looks rather gloomy!

Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes

I was very fortunate yesterday to find an imported CD at South Shields Market, a copy of Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes Live at the Greek album from 2000. The double CD even features a small video clip and it is something that friends suggested that I keep an eye open for (thank heaven's for the Flea Market!). Chris Robinson's vocals sound so close to Robert Plant's and Page was just electrifying in the sessions which led to a small American tour, and thankfully there are some YouTube clips to share.

Although events are almost eight years old I often wonder if the collaboration between Page and the Crowes had an sort of influence over the guitarist's decision to eventually agree to the massive reformation of Led Zepellin for last year's concert at London's O2 Arena.

Here are two videos for aficionados of Page to enjoy, the first being a stupendous live performance of "In my time of dying" with it's heavy blues influence.

There is plenty of free entertainment taking place in South Shields this weekend with the Cookson Country Parade taking place this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. and Lulu kicking off the short season of free concerts in the Bents Park on Sunday afternoon. If you live nearby, get yourself into South Shields and enjoy yourselves, and wonder at the amount of work and effort our children and teenagers put in to present the carnival, we often read too much of the negative antics of just a small minority of our youth, but it must be remembered that the majority of teenagers and children often have a lot of talented positive skills to offer and they often go unmarked. So let's get out there and support them.

I'll be out and about this weekend with my camera attempting promote what is best about this part of the north-east, and what we have to offer our visitors. If you see me, do give me a wave!

We weren't exactly prepared to go to the playground today, since it was raining when we left the house, so we don't have any pictures today. But, since it wasn't raining when we drove by, we decided to stop at St. Gregory's school playground.

This is another small playground, tucked behind the private school. However, it has some unique playground equipment, including a climbing pyramid, an infinity climbing structure (kind of like a Mobius strip) with a blue, red, and green climbing wall, and double spring-mounted bouncy seats. They also had your traditional slide and swings, and a plastic house for young children.

Isaac and Alix both enjoyed the infinity climbing structure best.

Mom liked the blackberries and huckleberries we found on the path down to the meadow. Freshly rain-washed berries. Mmmmm.

Tyneside Labour MP tells constituent where he can stick his vote!

David Clelland the Labour MP for Tyne Bridge cannot have expected quite so much publicity following his rebuttal of a constituent's complaint over civil liberties. Clelland clearly sits on the wrong side of the fence when it comes to defending freedom and liberty in the face of gradual and constant erosion under a Labour government, of that there is no doubt, however I admire his guts and determination to stand for what he believes in. What's the point of chasing after a voter who will never ever support you under any circumstances? If Clelland is genuinely convinced that Gordon Brown's government is doing the right things in rewriting centuries old laws, and is prepared to stand up and be counted well that's very good. An MP's first duty should always be to his/her own conscience! The constituents and the party take the next two priorities.

Such a shame that Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly cannot display the same streak as she battles with her conscience, rather than stand up and be counted she'd rather take a lie down in Brussels!

So how fast is the South Tyneside Council's new website feature?

Well it must be good, the Shields Gazette have publicised it at least three times over the past week, and seeing as I was one of those making the most noise about the ridiculous amounts of questions being asked in the Council chamber by Branley Independents members of the public I thought I'd take it for a test drive.

You know that I'm a bit hacked off with officialdom and it's attitude to public photography (amongst other things) so I decided to ask the Council a few questions concerning which laws they acted under when taking the decision to ban photography in the Bents Park, South Shields last Sunday. The promise is, we'll answer your question within seven days, the result in this case was less than 24 hours, so credit where it's due - well done!

No complaints there, really impressive, it's the biggest shame that the officer who replied failed to answer the question though. I'd asked under which Statutory Instruments, Acts of Parliament, or local Bye Laws a decision had been taken to ban or restrict the use of photography last Sunday, this was the response:

The Great North Cheer was a private booking of Bents Park and not an event organised by South Tyneside Council. The event was staged by Kids Get Fit and they must have taken a decision to ban cameras and video equipment based on the nature of the event. This was not discussed in advance with the Council's Letting's Officer. That being said parental permission is often needed before photographs of young people can be taken.

Due to the laws of copyright it is an offence to record performances at Sunday afternoon festival concerts at Bents Park. Members of the public are made aware of this via signage and announcements via the compere. In certain instance artistes can also request that photography is prohibited however no such requests have been made by artistes appearing at the 2008 Festival.

So, the event was not organised by the Council but by Newburn based Kids Get Fit (yet the South Tyneside Sports Development Team's equipment was in full use, and there were plenty of South Tyneside Council employees on site to supervise) and a decision was taken to ban photography without consultation and without reference to any laws. Also, that being said, there is no law that I know of which requires parental permission to photograph young people when they are in a public place. If there was, then you wouldn't be able to see pictures like this, or this. The answer clearly does not set out the legal status for the banning decision.

One wonders, what the Council's position would have been if Kids Get Fit had consulted with them? For now though it's one rule for them and another for us.

I don't suppose any of all of those Council officials were consulted about all of the notices attached to the trees either!

There really appears to be no love lost between the Independents, and the former Independents, talk about being at each others throats! It seems as though new South Shields, Beacon and Bents Cllr. Ahmed Khan has been the target on this occasion although the sense in whittling the contest down to a two man fight seems to have been lost on most people, no doubt there will be lots of Labour Party members in South Shields laughing like gleeful kids over this incident, even after losing the seat.

I have said before that we have the council that we deserve in South Tyneside and I mean it. Our main opposition parties are shambolic, distrustful of each other, tactically and politically inept, virtually leaderless and with no real strategy or overall direction. I wonder if there is much point to local independent parties at all these days, perhaps the three main national parties should start to provide more leadership and focus at a local level, they have two years to get their acts together or face being displaced by people who cannot even get along with each other let alone get on with running a borough with a considerable budget!

South Tyneside Council illiberal/illegal censors

One might have thought after the publicity given in this blog and others to the illiberal and frankly illegal practise of bearing down on photography in public places, that the message might start getting out, but it hasn't. Photography in and from public places is perfectly legal in this country, yet this is the notice that greeted me as I entered the Bents Park, South Shields today for the "Great North Cheer". Perhaps I should have said "cheerless".

The event publicised in the Shields Gazette was meant to be a cheer leading contest between various teams of coached girls and I thought it might make interesting and useful material for South Shields Daily Photo and help promote the good things that we have to offer during the summer months. But it seems that the organisers, Kids get Fit assisted by South Tyneside Council's Sports Development Team, don't want or see the need to publicise their efforts and attract a wider audience for their proteges.

I don't recall South Tyneside Council having a particular bye law prohibiting photography in it's public parks, neither do I recall any Act of Parliament banning such a nasty activity, neither do I recall any public notices published by our council to the effect of banning or restricting photography in any of our named parks, so just how do they justify this illiberal censorship and removal of people's rights?

On arrival via the gate in Bents Park Road we were greeted by a series of notices tied to the trees including the one pictured, then we were met at a table by some gentlemen who directed us away from the cheer leading event! We were told that we would have to follow the path that leads out on to Beach Road "because there is a cheer leading thing on". I was dumbfounded and decided to ignore this silly advice on the assumption that they really would like people to come and watch. My daughter and I joined the small crowd of onlookers, mainly parents, relatives and friends only to learn that the participants were to remain behind the fenced off section "for safety reasons", and that doing "stunts or cartwheels" without your coach being present was not allowed because "it is dangerous!" There were further announcements telling people to put away cameras as "only the official event photographer" was allowed to snap away on her little Fujifilm digital camera. Oddly, when the Gazette photographer arrived (and somehow found the right person to speak to) there was a hurried reassembly of dancers "for a picture for the papers".

Just who are the people that South Tyneside Council is trying to protect us all from? With children fenced off from the public, with CCTV cameras in and around the park, with yellow jacketed stewards everywhere, with a police station just minutes away, with caring sharing parents on hand, with cartwheeling banned, just what exactly is the danger? Surely even these parents would like, and deserve, to record the event on their cameras to show to other members of the family at a later date?

If they really want to keep folks away, fenced in or out, and ban the recording of the event, then can I suggest they hold it in the gym at the Temple Park Centre, South Shields and close the bloody curtains!

Just why are these council "jobsworths" determined to take away a few more freedoms from happy families?

Perhaps these public servants ought to be taught how to protect our dwindling civil liberties rather than how to protect their own backsides, after all we pay them to serve our interests, we are not here to bow the knee and doff caps for them!

I guess it's a sign of the times, but I remember when I (eventually) left the South Shields Grammar and Technical School for Boys we sixth formers organised a joint disco with the members of the opposite sex from the Girls Grammar school at Westoe. We somehow managed to raise sufficient money to hire the Miners Hall (Armstrong Hall) in Stanhope Road, South Shields and pay for a local band (Cirkus) to entertain us, we had to sell tickets to cover the cost but somehow turned in a small profit.

We arrived via the no. 3 bus attired in scruffy jeans, hooped t-shirts and tank tops, and battered trainers, and filled the room with cigarette smoke (because we thought we were so grown up), but things are all rather different now. South Shields school leavers now want to dance the night away at Gateshead's Hilton Hotel or Ramside Hall near Durham, they want to travel in stretched pink limousines, wearing evening suits and ball gowns, we even have shops in Boldon Lane and Westoe Road geared up to hire the gown out, and this expensive Americanised night out is sweeping across the country! It's encouraged by local newspapers who delight in showing us the glamour and colour of our children looking like grown up film stars who will never look so good again until their wedding day!

I shouldn't worry yet, my children have quite a few years to go before I face this expense, but I do worry for those facing it now, just how do they manage with the financial pressure of the whole affair?
