A new book distributed by Inside Job Publishing contains explosive new details of some of Vice Presi

A new book distributed by Inside Job Publishing contains explosive new details of some of Vice President Dick Cheney's actions during the past seven years he has been in charge of the executive branch.

The book, titled When Cheney Farts The Earth Moves, will start appearing in bookstores early next week. The author is former White House aide Lenny Sinclair, who started working in Cheney's White House three weeks before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Sinclair recounts key events during the vice president's reign of power, such as Cheney's stand down order during the Sept. 11 attacks, his decision to wage war on Iraq and his 2005 plan for bombing Iran (temporarily postponed). Cheney's health problems are well-known, but a previously unknown ailment comes to light in Sinclair's new book.

"The vice president suffers from Flatunervousa, an intestinal nervous disorder which causes a person to spontaneously fart during times of high stress," Sinclair writes in the opening chapter. "After issuing the stand down order on Sept. 11, 2001 that allowed a CIA plane to launch a missile at the Pentagon without being shot down by air defenses, his Flatunervousa became known to me for the first time."

[caption id="attachment_338" align="alignleft" width="320" caption="It is unclear whether Cheney was in California during the earthquake there yesterday."][/caption]

Sinclair writes that he was with Cheney and former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta in the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) bunker after Cheney gave the stand down order. He includes Mineta's account of what happened in the bunker:

"During the time that the airplane was coming into the Pentagon, there was a young man who would come in and say to the vice president…the plane is 50 miles out…the plane is 30 miles out….and when it got down to the plane is 10 miles out, the young man also said to the vice president 'do the orders still stand?' And the vice president turned and whipped his neck around and said 'Of course the orders still stand, have you heard anything to the contrary!?'"

Sinclair then adds to Mineta's account.

"Although Mineta is technically correct," he notes in the book, "he didn't mention the fact that when the vice president whipped his neck around he also simultaneously farted very loudly. The menacing growl and vibrating power of Cheney's flatulence so intimidated the young man that no further questions were asked. The missile hit the Pentagon shortly thereafter."

The author also clears the air about Cheney's mysterious underground bunker.

"After the Sept. 11 attacks, people started hearing underground explosions outside the Washington, D.C. area," Sinclair writes. "Some speculated that it was construction work for the vice president's undisclosed bunker. In fact, the bunker had been built in the 1990s for President Bill Clinton so he could have a safe place to take his young female interns. What people were actually hearing was Cheney's Flatunervousa kicking in due to the high stress level he was experiencing at the time. You see, back then none of the neoconservatives responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks knew for sure whether the ruse would succeed or whether the American people would catch on and hold them accountable for their acts of high treason. So Cheney farted a lot back then."

The paperback book goes on sale August 4th, and will sell for $9.11.

So from time to time, the Fellows are fortunate to gain access to noteworthy folks who are in town for one reason or another to listen to their wisdom and learn. You never know who or when, but if you get the email or the call, it's be there or be square. We got one of those emails in April inviting us to breakfast with former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, who was in town to testify about the proposed rail transit initiative.

[caption id="attachment_143" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The Pacific Century Fellows meet former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta"][/caption]

We gathered at one of Honolulu's best places for breakfast - Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch & Crab - to listen to Secretary Mineta. Figuring we were in for a talk on transit, I know I was surprised when he instead spoke about his path to public service and the leadership skills he learned at a tender age from watching the challenges faced by his father during World War II.

He shared his experience in the internment camps of Wyoming and how he saw the effect on his family, especially his father, and their friends in the community. It was really fascinating to hear what their lives were like and how they coped. You hear about internment in school, but they don't really go in depth on what happened during and after.

Mineta became a public servant in the 1960s, where he first served as a city councilman for San Jose and then got elected as the first Asian-American mayor in the country. He went on to the House of Representatives and then later was appointed the Transportation Secretary under President Bill Clinton, making him the first Asian-American in the Cabinet. He also has the distinction of being the longest running Transportation Director as well as the first to serve under both a Democrat and a Republican, when he was reappointed by President George W. Bush. I'm sure there's something I'm forgetting, but the bottom line was that he's a pretty incredible individual.

He encouraged our group to focus on the task at hand and do it the best we can, because if you are successful at what you are doing now, the right opportunities will reveal themselves when the time is right. He spoke about those who spend so much time looking ahead to what they want, that they forget to mind the present and trip up their careers. Mineta also told us to remember those below us, that we would not be leaders if it weren't for their help, and to make sure we pull them up as we go to give them similar opportunities to achieve as we have thus far. Pretty smart guy, yeah? I know I was impressed.

Sadly, I had to leave early to catch a plane that day, so I didn't get to hear the end of his talk but the other fellows said it was great! Perhaps one day I'll get to hear him speak again soon.

I saw Brady Dougan last evening. He’s the under-the-radar CEO of one of the financial world

I saw Brady Dougan last evening. He's the under-the-radar CEO of one of the financial world's quietest giants, Credit Suisse Group (CS). The company's cocktail reception, hosted by Dougan at New York's Chelsea Art Museum, was off the record, so I can't tell you what we talked about. But I can tell you that this young chief sure seems to have grown into the big job. I spent time with Dougan five years ago in New York and Zurich when I was profiling John Mack, now CEO of Morgan Stanley (MS) but then co-CEO of Credit Suisse and the boss at CSFB, the investment bank. Dougan then was a "boyish" (that's what I wrote in my 2003 notes) 43-year-old hotshot with a maniac work ethic. He told me he got up at 4:15 every morning and typically was in the office by 5:15 a.m.

The maniac work ethic paid off. Dougan, now 48, still keeps up the pace, say his colleagues. Though these days, he runs early in the morning—in Zurich, where he's based, or near his Connecticut home, when he works out of Credit Suisse's New York office. Viewed as green when he took the top job in in May 2007, Dougan has performed pretty well in a punishing environment. It sounds crazy to say that $8 billion in asset writedowns is good, but in fact it is compared to rivals like UBS (UBS), Citigroup (C), Merrill Lynch (MER) and Morgan Stanley. Since the start of 2007, those banks have taken bigger hits than Credit Suisse has. Among its major rivals, only Goldman Sachs (GS) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) have beat Credit Suisse in 12-month stock performance.

Of course, Dougan and his rivals are still wrestling with the downturn. But Credit Suisse has managed to pick up talent, particularly in private banking and investment banking. Rob Shafir, the CEO of asset management and the Americas, joined Credit Suisse from Lehman Brothers (LEH) last year. Norman Mineta, the former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, is newly on board advising clients in ever-hot infrastructure investments. And with blood in the streets, Dougan seems hungry to recruit more.

P.S. Also at last night's Credit Suisse soiree: Norm Pearlstine. He's the former editor in chief of Time Inc.—and once my boss's boss. Pearlstine recently left Carlyle Group, the private equity firm, to go to Bloomberg in a new position, chief content officer. Ever since, I've wondered what he's really up to—and what his arrival might mean for expansion-minded Bloomberg. I asked him. "So, Norm, did you go to Bloomberg as a deal guy or as an editor?" Pearlstine smiled and replied, "I have two desks." In fact, he does—one next to Bloomberg editor in chief Matt Winkler and the other near the company's president, Dan Doctoroff. Who knows what that setup signals?

As we all know, Norman Mineta's testimony was never investigated or mentioned in the 9/11 Report. You would think that the "young man" that was involved in such an important moment during the 9/11 attacks would be named, and brought before the 9/11 Commission. He was not.

This clip is from C-SPAN's 5/26/2005 taping of the "Washington Journal". The caller clearly states that at the time the Pentagon was hit, Cheney was aware of the incoming plane according to Norman Mineta's testimony. At the end of this segment, Lee Hamilton says that Cheney was "in the key position at the time". Prior to that, he said that "the Vice President was in the operation room", and "when the impact did occur." To me, this sounds like Lee Hamilton just confirmed Norman Mineta's testimony.

This Los Angeles Times article lists Cabinet members who served under former President Bill Clinton who have endorsed Barack Obama:

Along with [Former Labor Secretary Robert] Reich and [current New Mexico Governor and fomer Energy secretary and ambassador to the United Nations Bill] Richardson -- who is a superdelegate, by virtue of his office -- the others who served in the Clinton Cabinet and now support Obama are former Commerce Secretary William M. Daley; former Commerce Secretary Norman Y. Mineta; and Federico Pena, who held two posts under Clinton, Transportation secretary and Energy secretary.

And here's why that's important in the nomination race:

"What it says to superdelegates is loyalty only goes so far. You have to make your decision based on what you think is best for the party," said Bruce Cain, a UC Berkeley political scientist. "If people like Richardson and now Reich can step out of the Clinton orbit, then it gets easier for fellow superdelegates who are bound by reasons of loyalty to also do so."
